Another practice gouache painting. This one was tricky, because I had to try to paint what was inside the greenhouse, as well as leaving the white of the page for the reflections of the glass. Kind of broke my brain a few times! Also, I need to figure out how to paint a straight line! haha
Based on a photo I took at the whit-comb conservatory in Detroit.  I think that was the name!

Belle Isle Gardens, Sunday, August 28, 2022 Oudolf Garden Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory Belle Isle was shining today.  People biking, hiking, picnicing, fishing, painting, kayaking, and just enjoying the beauty of the place.  We went to see the new Oudolf Garden, situated just north of the Nancy Brown Peace Carillon Tower and west of the Conservatory gardens.  The bees and other pollinators were going absolutely crazy over the delightful variety of plants.  If you haven’t seen it yet, the place is well worth a visit.

I feel like post Golden Ending, a lot of the androids figure out their likes and dislikes with each other rather than through other humans?
Like, because I love Connor deeply I'm going to focus on Connor. But like… I'm sure that while it might take awhile, more androids are hired by the Detroit police. Maybe other RK800s, maybe different models that wanted to be something other than what they were specifically programmed to be… And they're all kinda shuffled into a special squad that is possibly also used as a place to shuffle irritating human detectives too, set up specifically to handle android related cases.
(And because Hank is a lieutenant and has experience working with Connor he's put in charge of it. No one is more horrified at this turn of events than he is)
And these androids are kind of… learning what it means to be individuals. To have active opinions and likes and dislikes and the ability to say no and choose what course they're going to take. And it can be very overwhelming in a way that humans really can't get, so they work together.
Connor remains close with Hank, obviously. They're best friends, roommates briefly until Connor can find his own place. And Hank helps a lot in navigating things like Wants and Preferences. But it's definitely other androids that Connor forges ahead with, and that's good.
A lot of androids find hobbies that allow them to create things. They create music, they create art, they take up photography or knitting or jam making… things they enjoy for their own sake. And Connor is no exception.
Markus paints. Maybe North writes. And maybe Connor cooks.
It starts as a sneaky way to get Hank to eat healthier food, which Connor quietly frets over, mainly because Hank is his first real friend, his first best friend, and he's a good man but not a healthy one, and Connor's not quite to the point where he can compartmentalize all the math going on in his head, telling him to an alarmingly precise percentage how many years Hank is shaving off of his life with his diet and alcoholism. Medicine is advanced, the average lifespan of a human in an industrialized work is over 100 years, but Hank is hellbent on spitting that in the face and flipping the double bird while walking backwards into hell. So Connor cooks and makes healthier food and Hank begrudgingly eats it because Connor made it and you have to encourage your family when they make positive strides in their lives.
Eventually, Connor realizes he rather enjoys cooking. There's a math to it, and an art. Sometimes, like with baking, it's all very precise. And other times, like with pasta, it's about feel. Sometimes there's a recipe and sometimes there isn't, and sometimes the recipes are exact and other times they say things like "a dash" or "a pinch" or "a healthy glug". There's room for experimentation and there's room for days when he feels like he needs something exact, when the overwhelming number of choices open to him starts to make his systems overheat in a way that he recognizes is probably similar to the human experience of anxiety.
And there's something meditative about mixing or kneading, and something absolutely wonderful about the first time he tried something he'd marinated overnight and slow roasted and tasted it (Because you always taste the food you make, obviously), and Hank laughed at him because of how much he freaked out about how good it was. Like, he'd tasted things before (and Hank's realization that Connor literally TASTED blood and evidence led to a whole new set of declarations about how disgusting Connor was), but it had really hit him that time, for some reason.
He can't eat a lot. He can taste, but his model wasn't made to stimulate organic life in that manner. Most of his processing goes towards recognizing the intricacies of human emotion, empathy and mannerisms, rather than mimicking the physical aspect of organic life. So mostly, he makes the food for his human friends, and his android friends who have the ability to consume food. Creation for creations' sake, and for others. For the sake of filling the apartment, so bare and sterile for so long while he mapped out his own personality, with the smell of bread or stew or steak or pasta.
It makes it feel like home.
So does the art Markus makes and the photos that Hank's android assistant, Moira, takes. They hang on his wall or sit in frames on bookshelves and the coffee table: a vibrant oil painting of the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, colors slightly too bright for reality; a photo of the Android Case Squad triumphant after winning the inter-precinct paintball games, everyone grinning and covered in paint.
A candid of the squad out for dinner one night; the lighting's pretty bad and the humans are a bit tipsy but it's one of Connor's favorites.
Connor's apartment, at first so plain and sterile purely because he didn't know what he wanted to put inside, becomes increasingly vibrant. Art and photos and books and plants. Connor gets a dog, and Markus sends Hank a video of Connor literally crying when he finds The Dog at the shelter, a collie-bulldog mix that just flops into Connor's lap and then doesn't stop looking at him the whole car ride back to the apartment.
(Hank declares himself this dog's grandfather in much the same way that Connor jokingly declares himself Sumo's brother. Her name is Marci and Hank insists that Connor babies her way too much)

“July 2021” the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, which houses exotic and rare plants from around the world. Designed by renowned architect, Albert Kahn, the structure was originally built of wood in 1904 but the wood was replaced with steel and aluminum in 1949. The conservatory consists of five themed sections: palms; tropical; cacti; ferns; and the Show House, which has plants that are changed with the seasons. The gears shown in this image are still used to open and close the windows of the conservatory, which is the oldest continually-running conservatory in the U.S. It took a lot of research to locate information on the statue, which was sponsored by the Loyal Temperance Legion, and paid for by the children of Detroit who raised pennies as their plea for temperance. It was erected in 1910, then restored and relocated in 1963, according to waymarking.com This is the July photo in the 2021 Detroit Event calendar, 15% off for the next two days, link in bio!
