Album Reviews: RSD releases from Prince and Passengers
Record Store Day is possibly my favorite of all fake holidays. It's the day that we celebrate independent record stores. I know I know, that's every day, right? But for one day we can celebrate record stores and part of that celebration is the special RSD limited releases that day. This year I got to review some of the special 2025 RSD releases:
Prince and the New Power Generation Live at Glam Slam
Tumblr media
album cover
One of the coolest things I’ve gotten to do with this website is cover Prince. You see, he was one of the earliest musicians I got into as a kid with Purple Rain on cassette tape. A few years after his passing in 2016, The Prince Estate and Legacy Recordings announced a definitive Prince catalog project. In 2019, I got to review his 00s reissues (Musicology, 3121, and Planet Earth) and his 90s reissues (The Versace Experience: Prelude 2 Gold, Chaos and Disorder, and Emancipation). In 2020, I got to review his early 00s reissues (The Rainbow Children and Up All Nite with Prince: The One Night Alone Collection). In 2023, I got to review the Super Deluxe Edition of Diamonds and Pearls. No matter what phase I was going through (metal, punk, alt-rock, classic rock), I always checked out whatever Prince was doing. By 1991, Prince was in the prolific space of releasing an album a year and had been for quite some time. Following his Graffiti Bridge album, he formed a new backing band the New Power Generation. Their first album Diamonds and Pearls was released in October 1991. In January 1992, Prince and NPG did a preview of their Diamonds and Pearls Tour at Prince's Minneapolis club Glam Slam. After being featured on the Super Deluxe Edition of Diamonds and Pearls, that concert is now getting the stand-alone vinyl release with Live at Glam Slam, a 3-LP yellow vinyl RSD release.
In my review of the Super Deluxe Edition of D&P, I wrote "I think the highlight of this set is actually the Glam Slam concert. I wished that the concert had been released as its own live album and DVD. I was lucky enough to see Prince in 2010 at Madison Square Garden and he is easily one of the greatest performers of all time. Last year’s live release Prince and the Revolution Live was my #1 Live Album of 2022. But burying this concert in the box set is sort of like burying the lead." I'm happy to say that giving this concert it's own release is giving the concert it's own spotlight. With the exceptions of bootlegs and concerts on box sets, there actually haven't been too many live Prince releases (official, non-bootleg that is). 2002's One Nite Alone...Live and the and the 2020 collection was good, but not great as it was something of a lesser era for Prince. There was a few other live releases in the 00s as well. But the 2022 release of Prince and the Revolution: Live is the gold standard of live Prince releases as documenting what a truly legendary live performer he was. NPG was not bad, but let's face it they had big shoes to fill after The Revolution. But he clearly was in his prime as a live performer by 1992. There's an emphasis on NPG songs from this early 90s eras, but there are also some older gems like "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "1999" and some medleys. This is definitely one worth picking up in place of the D&P Super Deluxe Edition!

Passengers Original Soundtracks 1 30th anniversary
Tumblr media
album cover
In Nov. 1995 U2 and their frequent producer Brian Eno released a side project under the nom de clure Passengers. It was a complete experimental left turn for one of the biggest bands on the planet at the time. The concept of their lone album Original Soundtracks 1 was that each song was written for imaginary films, although a few songs made their way onto actual soundtracks like the anime Ghosts in the Shell. They brought in unlikely guest stars like Luciano Pavarotti and Holi. The album flew under the radar for the most part, although songs like "Miss Sarajevo" did appear on later compilations. Now as that album celebrates its 30th anniversary this year it is being released on vinyl for the first time in a remastered 2-LP RSD edition.
Through this blog, I’ve had a chance to cover U2 quite a bit: doing album reviews of the recent anniversary editions of The Joshua Tree in 2017, All That You Can’t Leave Behind in 2020, and Achtung Baby in 2021, 2023’s re-recorded classics Songs of Surrender and the reissue of Zooropa, and last year's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb reissue. But unlike those reissues of classic albums, this is more like a lost album. When it came out in 1995, I heard it a few times, but I never picked up. Not because I didn't like it, just didn't get around to it as I was mostly into other bands at the time like Foo Fighters, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam. So for me, this was like discovering something new. This is a fascinating album in U2's trajectory in that it was released after 1993's Zooropa and before 1997's Pop, both albums that are steeped in electronic sounds. With the exception of "Miss Sarajevo" and "Your Blue Room", the album didn't make much of a splash. If you go into this accepting that it is NOT a U2 album, but a electronic experiment featuring the members of U2, you'll appreciate it, but if you expect this to be of the ranks of their 90s work like Achtung Baby, it'll be looked at as a letdown. But give it a few listens and let it settle in.

Manga the Week of 10/17/18
SEAN: Neither rain nor snow not gloom of night can stay Manga Bookshelf from looking at next weeks’ releases.
We start off with J-Novel Club, who have three new novels. An Archdemon’s Dilemma 2, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash 11 (In which I hear things are all sunshine and rainbows forever), and I Saved Too Many Girls and Caused the Apocalypse 10, where our hero tries to deal with the world of theater.
Kodansha print? There’s Ghost in the Shell: Global Neural Network, with stories by Western writers based on the Japanese classic.
ASH: I really liked the Attack on Titan anthology, so I’m looking forward to this volume!
SEAN: Elsewhere in print, we have the Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 1 box set, Battle Angel Alita Deluxe Edition 5, Fire Force 12,and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime 8, which everyone seems to like more than I do.
The digital debut this week is Tokyo Revengers. Its plot… sounds like Erased, only edgier and more Weekly Shonen Magazine oriented, to be honest.
ASH: I do get a kick out of it, but I’m even more interested in the Battle Angel Alita finale.
SEAN: And we have: Beauty Bunny 8. Cosplay Animal 8. DAYS 10. Giant Killing 14. And Perfect World 7. Can a few of these come out less often, please. ^^;; I need to catch up!
MICHELLE: DAYS and Giant Killing, as always.
SEAN: One Peace debuts The Reprise of the Spear Hero, a light novel spinoff of The Rising of the Shield Hero, which seems to be Re: Zero only with no actual deconstruction.
Seven Seas has a debut. It’s Fairy Tale Battle Royale (Otogibanashi Battle Royale), combining beloved children’s stories with blood-spattered survival horror. If ever there was an anti-Sean title, this is it. All it’s missing is “whoops, I spilled milk all over my face!”. It’s a Kadokawa title from Gene Pixiv.
There’s also an omnibus release of the first 3 Boogiepop novels.
ASH: I’m so happy to see these back in print!
SEAN: Ongoing series include 2nd volumes for How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord’s manga version, as well as twisted weirdness with The Voynich Hotel. There’s also a 3rd volume of the Kanna’s Daily Life spinoff from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.
ASH: I still need to read the first volume of The Voynich Hotel. It seems like something I would appreciate.
ANNA: Oh yeah I was meaning to check it out too.
SEAN: Udon gives us an 8th volume of Persona 4.
Viz debuts a Junji Ito collection, this one featuring Frankenstein, among other things. A must for horror manga fans.
ASH: Yes!!
ANNA: Good stuff!!
SEAN: If you never read Tokyo Ghoul, there’s now a complete box set of the first series. And there’s also a 7th volume of Tokyo Ghoul: re.
Lastly, there’s a 3rd Dead Dead Demon’s Dededededestruction and a 4th Fire Punch. I prefer the former to the latter.
ASH: Same here.
ANNA: Also need to catch up with the former.
SEAN: Assuming you’re not affected by weather, what are you getting next week?

Monthly Manga Review Index: May 2017
Spring house cleaning alert! In an effort to make the Monthly Manga Review Index more useful, I’ve reduced the number of categories from four to three. Those categories track closely with the original format: From the Top lists the first volumes of new and ongoing series; Ongoing Series focuses on later volumes of current titles, and From the Vault lists older series that are complete, unfinished but suspended, or out-of-print. Digital-only titles — once a separate category — are now flagged with an asterisk (*). I’ve also created a permalink for all installments of the Monthly Manga Review Index, making it easier for readers to find titles of interest. Last but not least, I added four websites to the blogroll this month: All-Comic, Anime Ushi, Manga Maniac Cafe, and SKJAM! Reviews.
Here at The Manga Critic, I posted reviews of The Emperor and I, a gag manga about a family who adopts a penguin; Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, a drama about an ex-con who’s trying to reinvent himself as a rakugo artist; and Delicious in Dungeon, a series about a quartet of adventurers who slash, fight, and cook their way through a subterranean world of monsters and man-eating plants.
REVIEW OF THE MONTH
Khursten Santos, manga scholar and hostess of Otaku Champloo, recently posted a hilarious, detailed review of Welcome to the Ballroom. I’d been on the fence about reading this series, but Khursten’s ecstatic descriptions of the dancing sequences convinced me to give it a try. “Seeing these dancers made me appreciate the power of lines and how they express movement,” she explains. “The weight of a line that flicks to a wisp illustrates a movement so rhythmic that it’s almost animated in these panels. A turn transforms into this complex movement that twists the dancer’s body.”
By the way, if you’re following Khursten on Twitter, be sure to extend your congratulations; Khurtsen just submitted her doctoral thesis! The subject: why fujoshi love Shonen Jump. Now that’s a dissertation I’d like to read!

Monthly Manga Review Index: March 2017
This month, I’m launching a new feature: the Monthly Manga Review Index. My motivation is simple. When I started writing ten years ago, link-bloggers such as Brigid Alverson, Tom Spurgeon, and Dirk Deppey played a big role in helping me find a readership. In the spirit of paying it forward, therefore, I’d like to shine a light on the good work that my fellow manga critics are doing at personal blogs, big corporate websites, newspapers, and everything in between.
Since it would be a fool’s errand to aim for comprehensive coverage, my goal is to compile a list of thoughtful essays that focus on new releases, classic titles, and buzzworthy series. I’ve divided the list into four broad categories: From the Top (reviews of new and new-ish print series), Digital Debuts (new digital-only titles), Ongoing Series, and From the Vault (a catch-all term for complete series or OOP titles). I’ve deliberately avoided labels such as “seinen” and “shojo,” as those descriptors are less useful for indicating whether a title is of interest to American readers. Additionally, I’ve chosen a review of the month to draw special attention to outstanding manga criticism.
Have a suggestion for improving the organization of this list? Want to recommend a great writer whose work should be featured here? Leave a comment below!
REVIEW OF THE MONTH: THE GIRL FROM THE OTHER SIDE
Anime UK News may not be on your radar, but this website has more to offer than just a lively set of forums; it’s also a great destination for manga reviews. This month, Sarah, the site’s editor, posted an achingly good essay about The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún. I finished her review with an acute sense of envy — I wish I’d written that! — as well as a deep appreciation for her description of Nagabe’s elegant, distinctive artwork. Go, read!

Manga: Reviews of Revolutionary Girl Utena Complete Deluxe Box Set and Ghost in the Shell Deluxe Edition

On this episode of the manga series -- a few days later than expected -- Shea and Derek discuss two new deluxe editions of older titles. They begin with Revolutionary Girl Utena Complete Deluxe Box Set, soon to be released by VIZ Media. This is a different kind of shōjo, one that the guys don't often encounter, and an aspect that makes this title stand out is its conceptual genesis. Revolutionary Girl Utena was conceived by the creative team known as Be-Papas but written and drawn by Chiho Saito (also a  member of Be_Papas). Shea and Derek discuss the "collaborative feel" of its genesis and the unusual mix of characters, costumes, and scenarios that define the series.
Next, the guys turn to a new deluxe edition of Masamune Shirow's classic Ghost in the Shell, just released by Kodansha Comics. The paperback versions of this title, and of the two follow-up volumes, are still in print, but Kodansha now has these wonderful new hardbound editions. The new Ghost in the Shell volumes stand out because for the first time in English, the story is presented in the original right-to-left reading order, they retain the author's original hand-drawn sound effects, the translation has been updated, and everything has been done under the author's supervision. Both Shea and Derek have a great time revisiting Ghost in the Shell, and they hope that Kodansha will be bringing back more of Shirow's manga -- e.g., Appleseed and Dominion -- in these nice deluxe editions.
Check out this episode!
