“That shouldn’t be there” Riley mused to himself.

The trip from Hermes Station in the north-west to Olympus Mons had taken him over a week of gruelling travel in a tight exocraft, with barely enough room to sleep. He had seen nothing but red dirt and blue sky for 6 days and was grateful now to be stopped.

He was actually going to the other side of the mountain when in the distance he had seen this steel door not quite hidden on the rock face. It looked old. Older than the first settlers of Mars and wanted to investigate.

Riley stood before the door and was dwarfed by the neck breaking height of the cliffs of Olympus Mons above him. The door stood barely taller than himself, and if he wasn’t looking for something more than what he had been seeing for the past 6 days, he would have missed it. He approached the door and pushed on it.

The heavy steel door opened with a creak illuminating the inside of the library, lit by the fading sun on Mars. Riley stepped into the darkness with his torch cycling the light options. The flood light barely gave him enough light to see ahead of him, so he decided that the beam would have to do.

The darkness did little to help him understand what this place was. As far as he could tell he was in a reception area of a sort. Sat in the middle of the room was a straight flat desk with a heavy layer of dust coated on top. On either side of the room were doors. Riley hoped that at least one would have a way to turn the lights on in this place.

Looking into left room he found a desk in a more personalised state than the reception and assumed that this would be the office of a supervisor or someone like that. In the other room Riley found more luck with turning the lights on. In here were three computers lined up perfectly against the wall and in between each was a control panel. Looking closer, Riley found that, thankfully, the panel were labelled and easy to navigate. He soon found the master switch for the power and flipped the switch.

At first nothing happened, then one at a time lights began to come to life. Some came on immediately, and others took longer to turn on, like being awoken from hibernation after a far too long winter.

Feeling rather pleased with himself, Riley went back to the reception with new optimism about walking around now that he didn’t have to do it by the light of his torch. Beyond the desk was a hall that still faded into darkness. The hall was lined with doors, each closed and after trying to open a few and finding that they were locked, assumed the rest would be too.

The hall stretched out and out and did so until he came to an abrupt stop, facing the largest room he had ever seen. The walls of this massive circular room were lined with floors upon floors of shelves filled with all manner of books, statues, monuments, and artefacts from every period and culture on Earth and more recent ones from the colonies and first settlers of Mars.

In the centre of the room, was a series of floating rings circling each other at different angles and different speeds. The fastest of the rings moved at the pace of Riley’s watch, while the slowest moved so little that he could have sworn it didn’t move at all. The curious thing Riley noted was that these rings almost lined up to where they would be flat against each other.

Riley nervously approached the rings and the pedestal at their base. He watched with anticipation as the rings moved ever closer to their assumed destination. Slowly the rings crept together and Riley wondered what would happen when the came together. Would they keep going? Would they reveal something that only he would now know? As far as he could tell he was the only living soul in this museum of curiosities and history. No one else would be here for whatever he was about to witness.

Ever closer the rings crept, and Riley started to become nervous. What if something bad was going to happen? It didn’t look like a bad piece of machinery, but then why was there no one here? What had happened to them? Did they leave? Are they still here somewhere hidden away in a closet?

All these thoughts passed through Riley’s mind in a split second and all the while his eyes did not leave the rings. His attention was held hostage as these rings moved closer and closer together.

A bead of sweat dropped from Riley’s fore head.

He hadn’t noticed the tremble in his hands.

Any moment now the rings would align, and he would find out what would happen.

A single breathe escaped out of his mouth.

The rings aligned and then they stopped. The base of the pedestal began to glow and made it way up to the top, in line with his stomach. The top grew brighter and brighter and soon became blinding. Riley could barely look at it, it had become so bright.

The voice dug into Riley’s mind like a worm and made its home there. The words hung in his mind, replaying over and over. He tried to look away and knew he must, but he couldn’t force himself to do it. He wondered if he touched the light would he would be released from this grasp that held him so tightly?

He made the thought to move and raised his hand towards the pedestal. The motion felt easier than breathing. He reached out and placed the palm of his hand on the top. At once everything in his vision became white. It consumed everything. He wondered if this was blindness, although he had always imagined blindness as a darkness, not a blinding light. He found it hard to concentrate. He felt himself losing balance and stumbled. His hand stayed on the pedestal, yet his knees gave out and he collapsed and everything became black.

Random Act of Kindness: Kyoya x Kaoru

AU where no one is rich and Tamaki really wanted that Starbucks unicorn frappuchino.

- - Kyoya didn’t have time for this.

Here he was, standing in an obnoxiously long line at the only coffee shop in town, late for his study group, all because Tamaki wanted a stupid blended coffee-flavored ice cream drink but wasn’t feeling well enough to go off campus to grab it. Kyoya didn’t even want anything and advised Tamaki the same for his health, but the puppy dog eyes worked and off he went to the slowest shop on earth. He might as well buy himself a black coffee to reward himself. 

“What kind of chain coffee shop doesn’t have a drive through?” he muttered to himself, checking the time on his phone. There were four people ahead of him and even more behind him, so it could be worse. But it was lunchtime on a Saturday, so he should have thought this through.

Rather, Tamaki should have thought this through. Or, even better, he should have waited until all the hype around this disgusting sour candy, rainbow funnel abomination died down and fewer people would get it. But, as it was, the wretched drink was plastered on every poster in the shop’s windows, and when Tamaki saw something trendy, he had to have it.

Kyoya didn’t even want to think of the embarrassment he would feel when walking out of the store with unicorn refuse in his hand. No one would focus on the plain cup of coffee steaming. They would only see the juvenile smoothie-coffee combination in its transparent plastic cup and would judge him for that.

Time clicked on. Two more people paid and left, which gave Kyoya a little spurt of hope. Though he would have rather stayed in his vehicle, at least not many people were left in the shop. Hopefully it would stay that way and he could sneak out with what was left of his dignity in tow.

Finally it was his turn to order, so he stepped up to address the tired-looking cashier. 

“Hi, welcome to--” the cashier started, then they made eye contact and he froze. 

Kyoya looked into his amber eyes, seeing his own reflection therein. “Hi?”

The cashier shook his head, a blush matching his hair running under his work visor. “Hi, I’m sorry, I’ve just had a really rough morning and you are the cutest patron I have had yet. I lost track of what I was doing.”

Kyoya rolled his eyes. He had had his share of admirers and dates in his life, but he didn’t have the time or energy to focus on that now. Right now all he wanted was to give Tamaki that stupid drink and make it to his study group with his coffee in one piece.

“I’ll have a medium black coffee and a small whatever--” he waved his hand at the window, where the menacing pastel poster grinned at him. “Whatever that thing is.”

The cashier laughed as he punched it in. “Come on now, sound more excited! You must have some happy bone in your body if you’re ordering that.”

“It’s not for me,” Kyoya said. “It’s for my friend. You couldn’t pay me to drink that.”

“Oh, the black coffee is for you.” The cashier smirked and pulled out a paper cup. “You know, there’s no shame in hiding it. We know the black coffee is a cover up.”

“It’s not a cover up,” Kyoya huffed, grinding his teeth. The cashier twirled the marker in his fingers, giving him an unrelenting stare. “Whenever my friend sees anything new and shiny and flashy, he has to have it.”

“You hear that, Hikaru?” the cashier yelled to the barista down the line. “He’s getting the mythical pony drink. For his friend.”

Hikaru shook his head, sending a devilish grin back to his--his twin?! They looked exactly alike. “Oh, right, for your friend,” he repeated. “Coming right up.”

Kyoya’s cheeks burned with embarrassment, but he didn’t have the patience to tear into them like he wanted to. “I don’t have to explain myself to you. I’m running late. Just give me the drinks.”

“What, don’t wanna stay and hear our teasing?” the cashier said, wiggling his eyebrows. His face no longer matched his bright red hair, but Kyoya still saw the smirk of curiosity beneath his skin. “That’s fine. Hikaru, he’s mad we’re having fun.”

“Aww, Kaoru, what a shame. We were just getting started.”

Kyoya ignored him. “How much do I owe you?”

Kaoru pressed a button on his computer, and the screen wiped clean. “We don’t charge people we’re mean to,” he whispered, deepening his voice so low that Kyoya had to lean in to hear it, “or really cute customers.”

And he scurried off to help his twin with the drinks, leaving Kyoya to awkwardly side shuffle to the pick-up counter. As he waited the few moments, trying to understand what just happened, the other twin set his drinks up and waved him goodbye. 

“Come back and tell us what your friend thinks of it!” Kaoru yelled as Kyoya walked out the door.

Kyoya had never been more grateful for the privacy of his car. Though still running late, he took a moment to breathe and take a sip of his long-awaited coffee. 

It was delicious, but the taste isn't what caught his attention. It was the black smudge on the side of the cup.

Call me when you want a refill -- Kaoru 

Kyoya stared in disbelief at the phone number below the name, both intrigued by the cashier’s boldness and confused at all the teasing earlier. Still, he was cute. And he had a sense of humor. And he had given him his drinks for free.

Kyoya took another sip, this time smiling as he started his engine. Maybe he should give him a call. To thank him for his random act of kindness.

Crowley seemed hesitant to answer. He let his head dangle over the back of the couch, and his neck seemed long and almost broken at the strange angle. Crowley stiffened and lifted his head back up to look at Aziraphale. He didn’t seem to be angry or hurt or anything else just sort of… empty.

“I know you care about me,” Crowley said carefully. “You would’ve smitted- smote- whatevered  me long ago if you didn’t.” He picked at the black nail polish on his fingers, just to give his hands something to do and his eyes somewhere else to look other than Aziraphale. “But that’s not the same thing as love.”

Aziraphale knew that he had been less than kind to Crowley during different parts of their relationship over the years (what, with pointing out the fact that he was a demon with a startling amount of regularity), but he’d had his reasons for doing so. Part of him had done it because he’d believed that that was the way it was supposed to be, different sides, mortal enemies all that, while another part of him had believed that he would be saving Crowley if he’d done it. No one in Hell could accuse him of anything if Aziraphale made sure that both of them could keep up appearances.

But still, to hear that Crowley didn’t even believe that Aziraphale could possibly love him hurt him far more than he would care to mention.

They’d left Eden together, witnessed civilizations rise and fall, sailed the high seas for each other with pirates, and just recently,  discovered that they’d lost the antichrist, found him, stared down Death and the literal Devil, evaded Heaven and Hell, and started the rest of their lives together.

Because it’s you. It’s only you, and it’s only ever been you.”

Watching Crowley absorb his words was a bit like watching a computer buffer on the slowest internet settings possible. Eventually, his brain seemed to catch up with everything else, and he leaned his head forward to rest it on top of their intertwined hands. 

“When did you realize?” Crowley asked, his voice cracking. Aziraphale could tell that he was crying, or at least near tears, but he didn’t call him out on it. 

“I think I realized it somewhere during the eighteenth century,” Aziraphale said. “I was so scared to lose you after you mentioned wanting Holy Water and I think that’s what fully made me realize it.” He squeezed Crowley’s hands again, feeling his own face began to heat up. “Do you remember that night in the church? With the Nazis?”

Crowley snorted, a wet sounding snort that spoke of tears. “Yeah, how could I forget? Your dumbass almost got us both discorporated.” 

Aziraphale sniffed and turned his nose up just a bit. “I’m not the one who dropped a bomb on us, my dear.”

“If I hadn’t, we would’ve died either way.”

“Even so!” Aziraphale said, bringing the conversation back around. “That was the night that I realized you might actually love me back. Or that you at least cared for me far beyond what I had always assumed you did.”

“For Somebody’s sake, why’re we such idiots?” Crowley asked, lifting his head up so he could meet Aziraphale’s eyes.

Aziraphale, finally having enough of not being able to see Crowley’s eyes, reached over and gently took his glasses off. His yellow snake eyes stared back at Aziraphale, tears still falling from them as a small laugh came from him.

He’d planned to answer Crowley, really he had, had thought up a million and one ways to say they weren’t stupid or anything, but all thoughts immediately went out the window as he stared at Crowley. 

Without even planning to, he leaned forward, his lips coming to rest gently against Crowley’s. It was soft, so light that he wasn’t even sure that he was actually kissing him at first, until Crowley reached over and pulled him in closer.

He couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across his face when they broke apart, and from the look on Crowley’s face neither could he. 

“I love you,” Aziraphale said, putting as much love and adoration into those three words as he possibly could.

“I love you, too, angel.”

And they came together again, their lips pressing close as the night went on. Later, Crowley will remember what he had been trying to say about James Bond and Aziraphale will lean over, and kiss him just to distract him again. And it will work.
