American Gods ep.1
Yesterday I watched the first episode of American Gods. It is a tv series based on the novel written by Neil Gaiman. First of all, there will be spoilers so do be warned.
I’ve read the novel plenty of times, so had many things I wanted to be brought to the screen. I was not disappointed, but also did miss some things. I believe some things have been adjusted to be more modern because the novel was released 16 years ago.
First of all, Shadow. I was not the biggest fan of the suit he was wearing. In my mind when I was reading I definitely imagined him in some jeans and a t-shirt. I don’t mind Ricky Whitlle as Shadow even though I was imagining him a bit different. They also used a lot of gallows imagery all through the first episode, it is quite a foreshadowing, not just for the end of the episode but further on. Just as the tree he keeps seeing in his dreams.
I found it interesting that they did show Low Key Lyesmith but didn’t actually say his name. It is of course a giveaway if you are familiar with Norse gods. I didn’t understand how in the book Shadow didn’t realise who he was earlier, because that was so obvious.
Audrey was a bit more psychotic then I imagined. In the book during the funeral she spits in Laura’s face, but the Audrey in the show just goes beyond that.
I loved the little foreshadowing moment with Wednesday. When he said: “Why are you staring at me like I fucked your mother?” (or something like that). If you have read the novel you will know why that is quite cheeky of him to do.
I imagined The Technological boy way different, in the novel he is described as a bit of a rounder boy and the technology was not that advanced. When he first took Shadow it wasn’t by some crazy cool VR device. I do admit the scene was beautifully shot and did seem very appropriate for the TechBoy, with all the movement of the supposed limousine and his “children”.
You can clearly see Bryan Fullers hand in the way show is filmed and the scenes are set up. The way the blood is just flying about like someone’s using a hose to spray it out. The tree in the dreams looks beautiful and a bit impossible. The buffalo man looks amazing. The scene with Bilquis was amazing, because the perspective was so twisted at times you could not tell if she had become giant like a god or he was becoming smaller. I liked that she was not a street walker in the series, but was there on a date with this man.
Will definitely keep watching to see what they change and what they keep. Would suggest to anyone who liked Hannibal to watch this series, it is just as beautifully shot. Also if you are interested in history, especially different Gods, this is definitely worth the watch, with what is to come. It is quite brutal so if you are not into that, probably should not watch this show.
