Chapter Ten
I could feel my mate’s agony even during my meeting with Mayor Blaney. There were more arguments and blaming, instead of agreements and assurances. I silently thanked the presence of my parents and my beta. They would also argue on my behalf every now and then.
Finally, Mayor Blaney relented. She agreed with the initial discussion of tripling the patrols, given that we shoulder all expenses of the families with their deceased and the medical expenses of the survivors.
We shook on it, and left immediately before she could berate us again.
I rushed to my car and drove to the university. I could hear Vivian’s cries from the hallway. A few people have gathered around. They looked like professors, her co-workers. Some of them also in tears because of the tragedy. I saw Vivian’s mother inside her office, shaking her as if meaning her to stop. She too was now in tears, for her daughter. She was helpless as she looked up at me.
As soon as I had Vivian in my arms, she fainted. Only then did her cries quieted. But it didn’t stay that way for long. She was already stirring in my arms as if wanting to stand on her own. I sat her in my car, her parents right beside us. Her father arrived just a few seconds ago, and handed us a bottle of water. I opened it for her and let her drink.
I wanted to know what she was thinking. I wanted her to know that she could tell me anything. After a while, she exhaled, looked at us and forced a smile.
“Sorry I worried you.” She whispered.
“Oh, honey.” Her mom almost in tears gathered Vivian in her arms.
We had dinner together before going our separate ways. I’m glad Vivian came back with me to the pack like it’s where she always belonged. I tried comforting her on the way back. I honestly didn’t knew how because she didn’t speak of it. After crying her eyes out in her office and fainting, suddenly it feels like she woke up like it didn’t affect her. But it did, because it feels like her light faded.
“Thank you.” She said during the car ride. “I know you’re trying but I don’t want to speak about it. Maybe not right now.” She tried to smile again but it looked like she was really tired of pretending to be okay.
So I nodded, put my arms around her and let her head rest on my shoulder. I placed a gentle kiss on top of her head. “Rest. You don’t have to pretend with me.”
She hummed in agreement.
The next morning she was already awake, getting ready, almost finished buttoning her blouse. I had some of her clothes brought here since I didn’t want her going back to her apartment. It might be a long shot but I fear the rogue attack is connected to the cloaked figure but I didn’t mention it to anyone. Not even Vivian. I believe she has enough on her mind.
I stood up and hugged her from behind. “Heeey,” I said softly, not to startle her. “You’re not going to work, are you?”
She looked at me through the mirror. “I want to. Also… I want to pay them a visit.” She moved to grab her bag and with a less solemn tone she added, “I’m going with some of the other professors. We’ll be dropping by the hospital and then to the funerals. We’ll also be planning for a memorial.”
I stared at her, placed both my hands on her shoulders, looking for signs that she may be pushing herself. When I didn’t, I sighed. “Looks like you have your whole day planned out.” I gave her a smile.
She smiled back. “What are you going to do all day?”
I shrugged, “I may need to go to the hospital and visit the families as well.”
She narrowed her eyes as if I said something suspicious. Honestly, I could spend the whole day with her. I did promise to pay for all the expenses caused by the attack, though everything could easily be handled by Elliot. But going with my mate to meet with them seemed more personal. I wanted this to be personal.
I want them to know that I am sorry for what happened, that they won’t have to worry about anything, that we will do more to prevent this from happening again. And I want to be there for Vivian.
I mindlinked Elliot to meet us outside and that we will be going to Maxwell to visit the survivors and the deceased’s families.
“I’ve already arranged the payments.” Said Elliot once we got to the car. He sat on the passenger side, and Vivian and I sat on the back. The driver started driving to town.
Vivian asked, “Payments for what?”
I answered, “During our meeting with Mayor Blaney, we’ve agreed that our pack will be taking care of all the expenses incurred at the hospital for the survivors’ treatments, and the… ah, funeral expenses.”
“Oh.” was all she said before she looked at me. “So you were really going to the hospital?”
I nodded. From the corner of my eye I saw Elliot make a face. He knew I didn’t need to. But he also knew I had to.
