Castle Ficlet: A Persuasive Argument 1/1
A Persuasive Argument
A Reference Material Universe ficlet
This is ridiculous. He's being ridiculous.
She hasn't seen her boyfriend in almost a week, not since a date that had ended in him walking her back to her dorm, hiding his face in his sleeve to sneeze half a dozen times, and frankly the separation is getting a little old.
Fine, he has a head cold. He feels crummy, she gets it. Colds suck; they take days to build up, and then they linger for maximum misery. But he's decided to hide in his apartment and wallow instead of taking some Dayquil and getting on with things. Like coming to class or seeing her.
And all of it with the explanation of "Well I don't want to get you sick, too, Kate."
Her boyfriend is an idiot. He's sweet to think of her and put her health above his like that, but he's still an idiot.
Of course she doesn't want him to get her sick, but wouldn't letting her help make it easier for him to get well faster? She can cook, but he won't even let her come over to make him soup. She could rub his head and pamper him just a little bit, the way he always pampers her. But no. No, he's suffering in silence, save for the occasional text to let her know he's at least still breathing.
Well, enough of that.
She waits to text him until she's outside his building, wanting to see if he'll let her up or if she's going to need to stoop to using the big guns: asking someone else to let her in and sneaking to his door.
How're you feeling?
His reply comes less than a minute later, and she imagines him sprawled on his couch, his feet sticking out from under the throw blanket she'd fished out of his linen closet soon after they'd started dating.
Like crap. Miss you and the ability to breathe through my nose. In exactly that order, I swear.
Her lips turn up. Well, at least he's once again capable of joking. The first day or two he'd been too miserable to even attempt humor.
Miss you too, babe. Can I get you anything? Your homework from the last few days? Food? 'Get well' sex? Gatorade?
Okay, it isn't exactly subtle, but screw it. She wants to help. And if she has to write a persuasive essay to convince him she's not worried about getting sick, then so be it. Because it's not even about sex, as much as she misses that, it's about how her chest has tightened in his absence, how her body misses the press of his at night, how her day isn't complete without him.
She's even prepared to watch some of his stupid movies if he would just quit being so damn stubborn.
Homework's been emailed in, doing okay on food and supplies, and god yes, but you'd probably never want to sleep with me again after this.
Kate rolls her eyes; Rick has his mother's flair for drama, and it's only been amplified with his illness.
Let me be the judge of that, will you?
When no response comes, she types out another message, tapping her foot against the sidewalk while she waits for the door to unlock for her.
Finally, the damn lock clicks and she's able to slip into Rick's building.
He greets her at his door with a red nose and bloodshot eyes, looking every bit as pitiful as she'd been imagining, but he doesn't shy away from the kiss she presses to his cheek.
"Hi," she says, dropping her bag in the entryway and crowding his chest to hug him. His arms band tightly around her, his body sagging, but she doesn't let him go. "Missed you."
With her ear against his chest, she doesn't hear any signs of wheezing when he speaks, which comforts her; it is just a head cold, not something worse like bronchitis.
"Missed you too, Kate," he rumbles.
Lifting her head, she brushes a hand through his hair, smoothing the shiny strands off his forehead. "Why don't you go take a shower and I'll make some dinner?"
"Telling me I smell?" he jokes, feigning shock when her face twists into a grimace.
"You are a little ripe," she admits, thumbing the growth of his beard. He has smelled worse, but she has no doubt that he'll feel better without the layer of oil and the sharp tang of sweat clinging to his skin. "Besides, the hot water will work wonders for the aches, and the steam could help clear your sinuses. Go."
Apparently deciding it's not worth arguing about, he nods after a moment, giving her a gentle squeeze. "I won't be long."
Kate shakes her head. "Take your time. I'll be here."
She watches him go before grabbing her bag and taking in the state of his apartment.
Usually immaculate, the place is in disarray, demonstrating exactly how under the weather he's been. Kate decides to tidy the kitchen first, since she'll need some of the counter space to make their dinner, and once she gets the food going, she'll straighten the rest of the place.
Rick emerges from the bedroom as she's putting the finishing touches on the living room. He looks refreshed, his eyes less clouded, and she blows him a kiss when he gapes at his space.
"Kate, you didn't need to do this," he says, shaking his head. "I didn't expect you to come over and be my maid."
"I know." One of her shoulders lifts. "But I'm here and I could. I know you would do it for me if it were the other way around."
She takes the garbage bag back into the kitchen, washing her hands and checking on their dinner. Rick trails her after another astounded look around, crowding her back at the stove, his arms curling around her waist. He inhales, pressing his mouth to her cheek.
"This is the first thing I've been able to smell since last week. And it is amazing."
"Me or dinner?" she asks, bemused.
"As wonderful as I'm sure you smell, it's definitely dinner this time."
A thrill rolls down her spine. She'd called her mom to get the recipe, deciding to forgo the typical 'remedy' of chicken soup, and now she's glad she had.
"Good. Hopefully you'll be able to taste it, too."
Rick squeezes her, humming in agreement. "Well it looks like it tastes great."
She laughs, palming his now-smooth cheek. "Hopefully it'll live up to the looks. It's my Nonna's recipe. She swore angel hair pasta and spicy sausage cream sauce was better, that it would burn away the cold instead of politely asking it to leave the way chicken noodle does."
He laughs, twisting away to hide his cough in his shoulder.
"I like the sound of that," he says on a groan, making her heart thump with sympathy.
"Me too," she murmurs, tapping the stirring spoon against the edge of the pan and setting it aside. "Come on," she adds, taking his hand and leading him to the other room, "you need to sit so you don't use up all your energy and pass out in your dinner."
Judging by the way he sags as soon as his back hits the couch cushions, he agrees wholeheartedly.
"I love you," he exhales, dropping his head back, allowing her to fuss over him with gentle hands. "And I'm sorry about this week. Didn't mean to disappear on you, just didn't want to get you sick."
Her fingers slide over his forehead, noting with gratitude that he's not warm. She drops a kiss on his lips, coming back for a second peck a moment later.
"I know," she says, pulling away when the timer on the microwave beeps. "I love you, too. And I was serious about that 'get well' sex, you know. The healing power of touch and all."
He laughs, catching her hand. "I was too, but I want you to still be attracted to me once I'm well. There's nothing sexy about a runny nose and coughing fits, especially when they occur mid-coitus."
She squeezes his fingers. There's very little he could do to dampen her attraction to him, even if that mental image does leave a little to be desired.
"So let's see what your Nonna's magic cure can do," he adds, wiggling his eyebrows. "Because the soul is game, Kate. The soul is so game, it's just the pesky body that's the problem."
"Be kind to your body, Rick," she teases over her shoulder. "I'm kind of fond of it."
He offers her a grin instead of commenting.
Despite the talk of 'get well' sex, they stretch out on the couch together after dinner, allowing their full bellies to dictate how lazy they're going to be. As she starts the movie - one of his favorites, no less - Rick's head lands on her chest, his breath warm through her shirt.
"Thank you for this," he rumbles, practically melting into her. Her lips press to his hair, her fingers sweeping along the tops of his shoulders, down his back. "For all of this."
"You would do the same for me," she murmurs.
He nods, blinking away sleepiness. "Of course I would."
"Then never doubt that I'll do it again," Kate insists. "And I'm not going to let you put me off for a week and stand outside poking you via phone, either."
Her boyfriend smiles against her chest. "No persuasive essays next time?" he asks, teasing her about her last text before he'd buzzed her up.
"As hot as I know that gets you," she says, lifting an eyebrow and her lips. "Nope. Just me. And Nonna's recipe."
"Hmm," he starts, pretending to think. "I can live with that."
Her fingers slip into his hair, pressing gentle circles against his scalp.
"Good choice, babe. Now rest," she commands softly.
He falls asleep before the movie is even half-over, leaving her to hold him and listen to him breathe until the pull of slumber is too hard for her to ignore.
This was (loosely) based on the prompt: “TFLN: (978): Would you like me to write a persuasive essay on how you should let me suck your dick?” and I want to say @i-prefer-west-side, @allylobster, and @whatifellinlovewith are to thank for this one. :)

Adaptogenic Protein Smoothie – 2 Ways!
Two recipes for adaptogenic protein smoothies to sip on throughout your busy workweek. These healthful smoothies serve as a great snack or light meal replacement and are teaming with nutrients and health benefits.
Smoothies have been making an epic comeback in my life over the last 3 months with the changing tide of my gut health. If you’ve been following along a while, you I took a bit of smoothie hiatus when my gut health was at its worst because bananas were causing my IBS to flair.
I continued making smoothies with steamed zucchini or cauliflower as a replacement here and there, but let’s face it: it’s just not the same. Drinkable, but IMO not delicious.
This to say, I’ve been whipping up protein smoothies on the daily including adaptogens for some added health benefits. I still keep my smoothies relatively low in fructose (I don’t go crazy with high-sugar fruit), resulting in a healthful drink that is super tasty but doesn’t cause a big surge in blood sugar.
Are you new to adaptogens? I’ll give you the 101.
What are adaptogens?
Adaptogens are plants or herbs that help support your adrenals, balance your hormones, and help your body adapt to stressful or anxiety-ridden situations. Adaptogens are ideal for people who are undergoing physical, mental or emotional stress to help calm nerves and ensure the body doesn’t burn out (or go into adrenal fatigue). In today’s society of chronic stress and over-stimulation, I think most of us could benefit from a little stress-reducing assistance.
Adaptogenic herbs have been used for thousands of years as natural remedies and have exploded in popularity over the last couple of years in the health and wellness community. Many of them help increase your energy level naturally (and are caffeine-free), and some of them even boost your libido (bow chicka bow wow).
Some commonly used adaptogens are ashwagandha, maca, ginseng, reishi, astragalus, holy basil, bacopa monnieri, Chaga mushrooms, Cordyceps, and more.
Like many great things in life, adaptogens take a great deal of time to work, which is one of the reasons I add them to smoothies daily. This isn’t like taking a puff on the peace pipe and feeling the effects immediately, so you’ll need to slow your roll when it comes to adding them and changing them.
For best results, start by adding one adaptogen to your diet, and after 2 – 4 weeks, add one more if you would like. Or stick with one! If you’re using the powder form of an adaptogen, start with ½ a teaspoon, then increase to 1 teaspoon over time.
Interested in learning more about some of the most popular adaptogens? Check out Bulletproof’s article, 12 Best Adaptogens to Feel Less Stressed, Laser Focused, and More .
My Favorite Adaptogens:
As you will see in the two smoothie recipes here, I am a big fan of maca and ashwagandha. I’ve been using maca for over 4 years – in fact, you can read my article, 9 Reasons Why Maca Powder is Awesome and have a sip on my Aphrodisiac Smoothie.
While I’ve been a consumer of maca for many moons, I picked up ashwagandha as well about 6 months ago.
Ashwagandha has been known to help reduce stress, anxiety, cortisol (your stress hormone) and c-reactive protein. It may help improve memory and research suggests is may reverse neurological toxins that contribute to neurological disease.
Adding ashwagandha and maca to a smoothie gives it that calming effect boost and helps the adaptogens go down easy. You see, many adaptogens are not super palatable, ashwagandha being one of them for me. You can still taste it in the smoothie, but it’s a subtle flavor you grow accustomed to.
I also have a supply of 10 Mushroom Blend powder, which includes 10 adaptogenic mushrooms. I love the concept of this type of product to cover a range of health benefits, although I do recommend singling out each adaptogen, at least to start out, to observe any effects.
Protein Options:
I find using almond milk, almond butter, and yogurt yields the best flavor for your protein smoothie. I use coconut milk yogurt, which is lower in protein than regular yogurt, so keep the protein content in mind when choosing your yogurt.
You can also add protein powder – collagen peptides and hemp protein are my two favorites. You can even add a cooked egg. I know, it sounds crazy…but I’ve done it on multiple occasions (see my Blueberry Grape Protein Smoothie for example), and it actually works quite well! Simply scramble an egg and allow it to cool in the refrigerator before adding it to the blender if this is something of interest.
And yes, you have my permission to tell your friends I told you it’s acceptable to put a bloomin’ egg in your smoothie. Winky face.
I thought I’d share my two current adaptogenic protein smoothie go-tos. Keep in mind, you can change up your protein selections according to your protein needs, add more fruit if you’re cool with more fructose, and also change the adaptogens depending on the effect you’re going for.
I hope you enjoy these slurpable beverages…if you make them, feel free to report back and let me know what you think!

Best Margarita Mix
The margarita is always at the top of drink list favorites.  Making them from scratch can take a lot of time and ingredients that you do not always have on hand, so staying stocked with a mix makes sense. We spent 16 hours mixing up margaritas to see which one came out as our top pick for best overall, and we think that the Be Mixed Margarita mixer is the choice for the perfect cocktail.

Best Margarita Mix
Be Mixed Margarita Mixer
We chose Be Mixed Zero Calorie Cocktail Mixer’s Margarita flavor as our top choice for best overall to tip in with your tequila.  The yummy mix was not overly sweet, did not possess the artificial taste that the other mixes tended to have, especially after the first drink, and was easy on our waistline.  Started by two Harvard graduates who were looking for a diabetic friendly drink instead of the usual vodka and soda, this company is poised to pour.  We liked the all-natural ingredient list, the simplicity of the flavors on their own, and in an unexpected twist (oh, the drink puns could go on all day) we loved how Be Mixed offers a variety of ways to use this mixer in a variety of recipes.  While we prefer the larger bottle over the single mini pours, the smaller option is available for those who may want something to take on the go.
History of the Margarita
While there is not one story we can verify as fact, there are legends to the story of the margarita, and here are some of the claims to creation.
Carlos “Danny” Herrera is said to have created the margarita in 1938 at his restaurant Rancho la Gloria which was halfway between Tijuana and Rosarita in Mexico.  His customer Marjorie King was a former Ziegfield dancer with an allergy to most spirits – but not tequila.   He named the concoction after her and word, and its popularity spread to the United States by both King and bartender Albert Hernandez who worked in San Diego at the La Plaza restaurant.
Tommy’s Place Bar also claims to have been the original home of the margarita.  It is here in Juarez Mexico where bartender Francisco “Pancho” Morales created it and then told the world of his delicious margarita drink.  Word spread when he moved to the United States to work as a milkman for 25 years. While there are many other stories and legends that originate in both Mexico and the United States, one of the more popular tales is that of Husson’s Cantina in Ensenada Mexico.  Bartender Don Carlos Orozco formulated the drink for the daughter of the then German ambassador, Margarita Henkel, who was visiting the cantina.  As Don Carlos was experimenting with drinks, he offered her one that consisted of equal parts tequila, a Mexican orange liqueur called Controy (known as Naranja in the United States), and lime.  He shook it all up, poured it into a salt rimmed glass and gave her the first sip.  She must have loved it enough to have the drink named after her and put on the menu.
While we cannot prove which of those stories has the most truth to it, we can tell you that tequila is the ingredient always found in an original margarita.   Variations have been created to give flair and flavor using the name margarita, but a true margarita always has the tequila and lime.  They may be frozen, on the rocks, or with or without salt.  In the United States, we may use the thick skinned Persian lime, but in Mexico, they are made with the smaller Mexican lime, known as the key lime here in the United States.
According to the international bartender’s association, the third component is triple sec or Cointreau.  We have done our fair time in researching margarita recipes over the years, and have found flavors to delight in with an array of recipes.  Unfortunately, you cannot always get a drink from scratch and so it
What Features are Important
We love a margarita but hate the hangover.  That hangover seems to be multiplied by a million – or so it feels – when the ingredients in our cocktails are less than great.  So we set out to get that great lime taste but without all of the unnecessary extras that fill up our glass instead of great taste.  Each mixer that we looked at was based on the classic cocktail flavor, which is lime.
How We Selected
We selected each of our brands based on popularity, name brand awareness and a classic lime flavor.  We did not want to compare.
Which Features We Reviewed
We reviewed the details of each margarita mix based on a four ounce pour of the mixer only.  We did not add alcohol or other mixers to enhance or adjust the flavor.  Since taste is an individual preference, we will make a note of it for each product specifically, but we are looking at the ingredients for our ranking section.  We wanted to know how the drink mix was sweetened, and if it was done with a natural ingredient or artificial, and what those sugar components were.  The calories matter because everyone should be mindful of what they consume, and this goes for the sodium as well.
Sugar
The sugar added to the margarita mixes that we looked at came in a variety of forms.  High fructose corn syrup is a controversial ingredient made from corn starch and is one that many health authorities feel an ingredient you should avoid.  Splenda is a commercial name for a sucralose based artificial sweetener, and it has a lower caloric content than granulated sugar.  Cane sugar is a naturally occurring sugar found in plants and plant parts.  Monk fruit extract and stevia are plant based sweeteners that are found in the monk fruit and stevia plant.

Sodium
Sodium content was relative because of anyone who is on a restricted diet, especially those with cardiovascular issues, need to be aware of their daily sodium intake.  Too much sodium or salt can make you feel bloated or dehydrate you quicker, resulting in symptoms of a hangover.

Margaritaville Margarita Mix
View on Amazon
Margaritaville Margarita Mix takes its name from the famous line of the Jimmy Buffett brand Margaritaville, the land where it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere and the music and good times flow freely.  While the image that the name conjures up is dreamy, and a place we cannot wait to get to, the drink mix did not meet our dreamy expectations.  Several testers were hoping to recreate the same drink they had had when visiting a Margaritaville restaurant but did not find that to be the case.  The taste is artificial and very sugary.  If you are a one drink wonder, this might be ok for you to stomach one or two, but most testers found that the high sugar content, calories, and sweet taste were off putting.  Especially for the next day when those ingredients really take effect in the form of a hangover.  We love us some Buffett but can do without the artificial taste and ingredients of this mixer, and the high sodium and caloric content as well.
Baja Bob’s Original Margarita Mix
View on Amazon
Baja Bob’s Original Margarita Mix is a standout for two reasons, the zero-calorie total, and their lower number in the milligrams of sodium column.  With only 35mg of sodium, they were second only to Margarita Texas.  Baja Bob has also made their mix offering zero calories, zero carbs, and zero sugar – a great win for those watching their weight or on a restricted diet.  We love where they are going with this product, and are happy to know that we can enjoy more than the usual one drink without busting up our diet, but we would have preferred an all-natural sweetener along with all-natural ingredients.  Some testers thought it had a chemical taste, but it should be noted that that is a common complaint of most drink mixes, especially margarita mix.
Jose Cuervo
View on Amazon
Jose Cuervo is one of those names that conjure up the immediate next thought of…. tequila.  So, we wanted to love this mix, but it falls into the typical category of too many calories and too sweet to really sip on all night.  With a high sodium content, high-calorie content, and high fructose corn syrup, we just cannot give it a solid recommendation as one of our top picks when there are better and more natural options out there.  While the brand name for their tequila is known and well respected, we did not feel the same way about the drink mix that they offer.  It is not the worst margarita mixer out there, but we think that if you appreciate a good cocktail, you can do better by spending your money on a more quality mix.
Be Mixed Cocktail Mix Margarita
View on Amazon
Be Mixed is our top choice for best overall margarita mixer.  This company was founded by two women who wanted to create a product where they found a total void in the drink mixing category – no calorie, all natural, and sugar-free.  They did it, and they did it well.  We love Be Mixed for so many reasons, first of which is the awesome taste.  Sweetened with a monk fruit extract (we had to look it up too, it is a vine ripened fruit native to Asia, which is full of antioxidants and vitamins, and free of calories) and stevia extract (again, had to look it up, but it is an herb).  This all-natural drink mix is their margarita flavor but did not taste like the traditional margarita mix at all.  It was good enough to sip on its own and could make a nice and refreshing drink with soda water if you are skipping the alcohol.  And better yet, this mixer is so versatile, Be Mixed has put together a recipe builder on their site to give you more options should you want something other than a margarita.  At press time, they had nearly twenty recipes to make using this specific flavor.  (They currently offer two additional flavors as well, ginger lime& cucumber mint which offers even more versatility.)An all-natural, versatile, and zero calorie drink mix.  We love Be Mixed Margarita, and without question, it was the clear winner.
Margarita Texas – Restaurant Style Margarita Mix
View on Amazon
Margarita Texas won an award from the Beverage Tasting Institute for their Restaurant Style Margarita Mix, so we were looking forward to learning more.  This drink mix was formulated by a husband and wife team who got started by reviewing all the margaritas in their home state of Texas.  They decided to create their own blend and entered a contest in 2007, taking home the prize.  The 4 oz. pour came in at a moderate 65 calories but took the prize for lowest sodium in a mix.  Something a lot of people need to watch out for.  We also loved that this drink mix was sweetened with cane sugar and not any of the artificial sweeteners.  Some testers did feel that it was still too sweet.
What We Liked
While it could have been in our imagination, we also felt more hydrated when drinking the Be Mixed brand, and we did not feel like we had to counter the sweetness with glasses of water as we did with some of the other mixes.  However, it is always a good idea to have water when consuming alcohol.  We liked the clean taste it offered, whereas some mixes have a strong chemical taste.
What We Didn’t Like
We did not like the harsh taste that some of the mixes offered, as mentioned earlier.  They were too sweet or too chemical tasting.  It is in our own personal experience that an unnatural drink mix harshens the effect of alcohol, resulting in a worse feeling hangover the next day.  Just like eating a meal that lacks in nutritional content, so does drinking a mix with the same components.
Should you be ready to throw on your sombrero and make a magical margarita, do it up right with these fun accouterments:

Remember to drink responsibly, enjoy your time with family and friends, and always celebrate life!
Conclusion
A fresh, clean cocktail made with pure ingredient is a wonderful way to unwind and enjoy gorgeous flavor combinations.   The legendary margarita is just that kind of drink, blending the perfect components of tequila, lime, and essence of an orange brought in with the third flavor of your choice.  For the sake of convenience, you cannot always make a craft cocktail, so drink mixers give way to a perfect solution.  But as with all things, overindulging can lead to a miserable after effect, so watch what you are putting in your drink with some of these mixes and the better the ingredients, the better the buzz, and the better you will feel the next day.
