Now just imagining Ben and Mark at Hilary Mantel's funeral...Mark being all like broody and "mom liked you better" to Ben and Ben being secretly pleased and thinking it was because Mark is an oxfordian but really it was because Mark is actual fae who has seduced both Harry Styles AND Timothee Chalumet with his ethereal charms.

This week in Rylanceland: hot murderer edition
Yeah so I haven't done this in a while and the main reason is me being triggered by the gore in the mark rylance tag rn because of Bones and All...which is a movie about a guy who murders people and is hot. I guess. I don't know. Mark is in his underwear which is good, but covered in blood which is bad....
But shout out to the Timothee Chalumet bloggers out there who have preserved so many pics of Mark. I thank you.

Top story: Hilary Mantel's funeral was yesterday and Mark did a reading. Interestingly so did rival Cromwell, Ben Miles (fun fact: I think Hilary preferred Ben Miles and I love him but I will always choose Mark...). Apparently Miles consulted with her for the script for the stage version of Mirror and the Light which is awesome. I hope to be able to see the stage version or the tv version soon (I mean before Mark and Ben become too old to play Cromwell...)
Mark was passed over for an Oscar nom this year, which he doesn't seem too fussed about.
Before the pandemic Mark was set to write a series of plays for the Guthrie theater (shout out to the time I was seated near Mark at a restaurant and managed to not say anything to him so my son had to talk to him for me) but it looks like that project might have morphed into a "TV thing" with Steven Speilberg.
Mark is reviving his role as Dr. Semmelweiss in the Pinter play in the West End this summer. Last summer he revived his epic role as Rooster in Jerusalem.
Mark is a founding patron of the Purbeck Film Festival and launched a fundraising campaign for a statue of Brian Haw. Rylance is an annual participant in Haw-related peace campaign activities, which include hugs from Sting.
Tumblr media
It's an older pic, but I really like this quirky tie...

This week in Rylanceland: Mark Why Would You Say That Edition
"Claire is the rock of my life. I won’t last long if she goes first."
-Mark, new Q&A Article in The Guardian. When asked about Claire by actor Eddie Redmayne, Mark said this and it ended me.

This week in Rylanceland: Hilary Mantel memorial edition
New article in the Guardian about Mark Rylance in which it is revealed that he is into crop circles (called it, seriously six years ago), does through hiking (no surprise really, but kind of cool to see it confirmed) and that he only met Hilary Mantel once and she totally dragged his ass, which is hilarious...
Speaking of Dame Hilary, Wolf Hall has returned to the best seller list because of the news of her death, which can only hasten the production of the Mirror and the Light mini series...
News about how that production is going, in light of Mantel's death here. (Also some insider stuff about the way Peter Kominsky and Mantel collaborated that I've never read before...). Other reactions to her death here, including Wolf Hall's producer.
Not Mark, but Wolf Hall-related, some video of the stage production of The Mirror and the Light, which I've never seen before, which may give hints about how the TV mini will look.
Trailer dropped for Bones and All starring Timothee Chalomet who according to Mark, "everyone has a hard-on for..." Mark has a small part in the horror/romance. Speaking of Timmy, Mark met with him on a boat during the Venice Film festival. don't remember seeing any red carpet pics of Mark during the festival, but since the Harry Styles/Florence Pugh/Chris Pine drama dominated the news, it's no surprise...
New trailer for Inland, in which Mark plays perhaps the character closest to himself, in that it is implied that he might actually be fae...
A really nice recent-ish photo.
A nice production still from the Jerusalem revival, which I missed, and am almost emotionally ready to come to terms with...

This week in Rylanceland: wordy addendum
So Yesterday I posted an all pictorial Rylanceland but I miss giving you all the WORDS about Mark, and boy are there a lot....
Top story is of course that Wolf Hall has begun filming again in Bristol. I am throwing this out there as a plea to tumblr: if you live in the Bristol area and would you be willing to be a correspondent to this esteemed organ, please let me know!
This season or series of Wolf Hall will cover the events of Mirror and the Light. I've been trying to work out WHY they are filming in Bristol, since I don't remember them using any locations there from the last season, but of course it could be something like Mark having a commitment at Bristol's Young Vic, where he has written, produced and acted in plays; and has a position on the board.
The series is due to be released at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. I am trying to tell myself it will be 2025 and then be pleasantly surprised if we get it earlier. It will have been a decade since the last season so that is ONE HELL of a hiatus.
Since the beginning of MATL picks up exactly where Bring up the Bodies left off (after the execution of Anne Boleyn, but with a substantial flash back to the day of her execution), I am of great hopes that Claire Foy will return for at least a few new scenes..
Also Mark was spotted with a heavily bookmarked copy of The Mirror and the Light on set. I believe he could be seen studying Wolf Hall in a similar manner in behind the scenes photos from Wolf Hall IIRC.
Mark was also wearing a wig with bangs, which he did not have in the last season (reason being it was a freaking DECADE ago and the man has aged) so I assume for continuity's sake the scenes that are being filmed now are not being done chronologically. Also the presence of Jonathan Pryce on set means we are either getting another flashback to Wolsey service days or another Wolsey's ghost scene.
It was raining on the first day of filming, so Mark wore a "pack a mac" over his cloak for some of the scenes (maybe closeups) and I am now going to call on @teadrunktailor to revive their brilliant Tom Crom cosplay with the addition of a pack a mac...because that would be amazing...
Thomas Brodie Sangster who plays Ralph was also on set, in more lordly attire than we have previously seen him, another clue that they are not working chronologically. I think Ralph Sadler would have styled himself similar to Cromwell through the events of MaTL since by that time he was Crom's man in the Privy Chamber. Ralph is a key character in the third book and I look forward to seeing more of his life and back story than we got in the first series.
Still no IMDB page for Series Two/Mirror and the Light but I am checking daily, lads.
Well that's about it Wolf Hall News, but I have a few other bits and bobs. Gonna save them for next week, since they are old enough at this point, they can wait a bit longer...

This Week in Rylanceland: Jersualem Revival Edition
Tumblr media
A month ago. I got a kind DM tipping me off about Mark confirming that the Mirror and the Light mini was going forward. That SAME week it was announced that Mark will be starring in a revival of his iconic role as Rooster in the play Jerusalem. For me, this has always been a Time Machine Play. I never thought I’d get a chance to see him in it. It just so happens we have a trip to the UK planned already for this summer. (Almost makes up for Mark’s play at the Guthrie being indefinitely postponed…).
The play has opened to strong reviews and a stampede for tickets. Here’s an adorable photo, shamelessly screenshotted from this lovely actresses Instagram, from opening night of Mark--still in his cycling vest from his commute to work--
Tumblr media
with actress Samantha Alleyne (whomst you may know as the first female stormtrooper in the Star Wars universe. She has appeared in all five of the Disney Star Wars films, though NOT in the Jerusalem cast as far as I can tell.) This photo prompted me to spend half an hour googling Mark's probable cycling route to work; like that's not an insane thing to do on a Thursday when I live on another continent...
In other news, Mark interned on Saville Row for his role in The Outfit…and wound up making his own costume for the film. Speaking of which, headline writers are unable to stop making tailoring puns about the film:
Mark Rylance is perfectly suited for his role...
Mark Rylance is a perfect fit for this fastidiously crafted crime drama
Mark Rylance is a cut above the rest
Mark Rylance cuts it close
...The Outfit isn't a finely tailored movie
"Horrible" Jason Stratham film, Blitz, nearly drove Mark to quit acting. (I’m not surprised, it nearly drove me to quit watching Mark Rylance films…). Makes me wonder what he thought about that Sean Penn movie.
Oh, Rats! Mark is working with PETA again.
Mark skipped the Oscars because “they’re boring”
Some new to me photos:
Young Mark looking cute in a robe
BB kitten Mark literally holding a ball of string
Newish picture from Phantom of the Open premier (with scarf and pinky ring!)

After being delayed by covid, Semmelweis is going ahead in Bristol. (Lots of production snaps in this article!)
British GQ interview with Mark (no new photos, but some interesting stuff about his process, including working with a voice coach).

This week in Rylanceland: I accidentally looked up edition
It's been a while...as near as I can tell at least 6 months. So sorry about that. Things and stuff happened. You know. Anyway, enough of my guilt/shame spiral, please enjoy some Rylance.
Tumblr media
Absolute fucking TREASURE TROVE of rare photos, most of which I've never even laid my rylance-obsessed eyeballs on, including the above pic of BB Mark in Hamlet. As if the above weren't enough, here's BB Mark in Two Gentleman from Verona.
Lovely article from the Guardian with a fresh interview with Mark, important NEW photos, including one that reveals a PINKY RING (called it...) and a round-up of what he's been up to in the pandemic.
Press from Mark's play about the inventor of vaccines that got canceled, ironically, due to covid. Important photo of Mark in rehearsals being bonkers.
Press from Mark's work with a youth theater group.
Random tell-nothing article that has a nice photo of Mark in a vest.
Trailer for The Phantom of the Open, a golf comedy starring Mark, some false teeth and an accent. @idlesuperstar: please let us know if the accent work is any good. I have no idea.
Trailer for The Outfit, which comes out NEXT MONTH. Can't wait. This looks like an interesting thriller.
Don't Look Up came out and has definitely dominated the Mark news of late. The Mary Sue named his character the "Villain of the Year," which is nice. Mark talks about his costume and wig for Isherwood while wearing a beautiful sweater.

This week in Rylanceland: Undeclared Edition
My predictions for The Undeclared War:
Rylance is going to sport some jacked up wig/facial hair that makes me suffer unnecessarily.
Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance will be so hilarious and adorable together in the PR run-up to the show that people will be like, omg has Simon Pegg broken up with Nick Frost?
Conspiracy shit, blah blah blah, The Thick of It style filming and I will have to watch it three times with subtitles to get half the dialog.
Mark's character will probably die at the end in a mysterious way
There is going to be a lot of blue filter and split screen ala Spooks circa 2005.
Mark will be fucking amazing in it, but get overlooked at awards time.

This...er...SUMMER in Rylanceland
So I haven’t done a Rylanceland since the start of the summer. I am a terrible fan. But my excuse is that Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgård have kind of taken over my brain space recently. But it’s TIME. I realized the other day that it had been a whole year since I saw Mark live at the Globe Theater in London. While this summer wasn’t quite as magical, it’s been pretty great Rylance-wise.
We are still waiting for Waiting for the Barbarian, which premieres at the Venice Film Festival (which starts tommorow). Meanwhile here are a few production photos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The big story at the start of the summer was Mark splitting with the Royal Shakespeare Company over their ties with BP. This wasn’t exactly news to followers of this feature, because he first announced this a couple of years back. But an opinion piece telling Mark’s side of the story, which ran in The Guardian in June, stirred up the hornet’s nest again.
As if Mark weren’t doing enough for the planet already, he took part in a charitable publishing venture Letters to the Planet, took part in a campaign for Cyber Non-violence, and urged his neighbors in Lambeth to vote for the Green Party.
Speaking of Lambeth, here are some photos of Mark out and about in his home borough in July:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rylance fans will recognize Mark’s beloved Thunderbird hat which dates back to at least the early 2000s if not earlier.
A couple of new acting projects for Mark were announced this summer. He’ll be narrating a short film called The Flaneur and Mark and Angels and Insects co-star Kristin Scott Thomas will be involved in My Grandparents’ War which will air on Channel 4 later this year.
A highlight of every Rylanceland Summer is Mark at Wimbledon. Here are some pics of Mark with other celebz: x, x, x, x, and x
Along with the much-awaited announcement of a publication date for Hilary Mantel’s third book in the Thomas Cromwell trilogy, I found some lovely Crom fanart and this blog post by Frock Flicks centering on Mark’s costumes in film.
Well that’s about it. I’ll be back in the next week or so with coverage of the Venice Film Festival.
