The End Of Tribalism
Tumblr media
I sat down to brunch with a married couple I’ve known for years.  The friendship is so comfortable, we dare to talk about religion and politics.  Mostly we discuss books. The husband told me he was working through the novels of a Japanese woman who wrote fantasy.  He couldn’t recall her name. After my friends and I parted, I returned home to sit in my easy chair, hoping to discover a topic for an upcoming blog.  As luck would have it, I came across an article about a Japanese woman writer who wrote fantasy, Sayaka Murata. (“A Planet of Her Own.”  by Thu-Huong Ha, Oct. 2022, Wired, 30.16, pgs.  69-75.)   Below the title, the blurb read, “…in her novels, she devises worlds where women reinvent sex, marriage, childbirth—and the boundaries of human existence.” Women in charge of their lives? Now that was fantasy.  Contrast that fiction with the morning’s headlines about American journalist Christiane Amanpour. She walked out of an interview with Iran’s President in New York because he insisted she wear a hajib. Melinda French Gates, in another article, commented that 100 years would pass before women approach equality with men. She’s right. The history of testosterone is long and pervasive. For example, Republican Senator Josh Hawley, in a tweet against LGBTQs, insisted schools should teach that there is only one gender. As a former educator, I have strong feelings about people like Hawley–book banners and parental rights extremists. Their goal is to put blinders on young minds. I have a similar objection to homeschooling, charter schools,  and religious schools. They balkanize the public system which is meant to provide the basis for a common culture.  In part, our fractured nation is the consequence of a fractured educational system. A population divided in what it accepts as facts threatens democracy. With no common denominator, we are left with opinions, as many as there are grains of sand upon the beach. Unfortunately, some of those thoughts come from elected leaders who should be wearing prison garb.   Incumbent Raphael Warnock, Georgia’s senator, has served his constituents without a breath of scandal. Even so, he is in a close reelection campaign against a challenger who admits to multiple personality disorder, has threatened his wife with guns and knives, and remains so menacing that three years after their divorce, she maintains a court protective order against him. One pundit explains, voters no longer care about fitness for public office.  They choose to support tribal interests, instead. Political affiliation is one of them.  Donald Trump, our 45th president, is right when he says he could shoot a person in the street and retain the loyalty of fellow Republicans. Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is tribal.  He complains his neighbor is too friendly with his enemies in the west.  He feels threatened. So, in his fantasy, the world should see him as a victim, not an invader. Few nations share his delusion, including allies like Chia and India. At a recent gathering of members of the United Nations, virtually all of the 15 members of the Security Council and the vast majority of U. N. members condemned Russia’s actions. They have reason to be concerned. Putin’s aggression threatens national sovereignty, a nuclear war, and worldwide famine.     Climate change, much of it human-caused, already endangers traditional food sources. Putin’s war exacerbates the crisis. Ukraine’s agriculture supplies 40% of the world’s wheat. Destroy its crops and discover how quickly starvation becomes the new reality.   Facts aren’t compliant. The truth will prevail.  When dreamers awake to it, will there be time to save democracy?  The Planet? The 2022 midterms could be a flexion point for the United States. I sense a longing for a return to sense and sensibility. Exhausted by fantasy, people of many persuasions want a world that works.  They want to be safe.  They want their children and grandchildren to be safe, also. A dream of empire is one they can’t afford. Inalienable rights are what they require.  That hope isn’t tribal.  It’s human. When equality is the norm, tribalism becomes irrelevant. We may also find that when tribalism disappears, we create more room for mercy.

A significant part of Jimmy Carter’s legacy hasn’t gotten much attention, even amid the recent outpouring of tributes to the 39th US president after he entered hospice care.
These steps Carter took during his presidency are still shaping the United States, decades after he left office. But they didn’t help him at the polls.
Because of Carter’s actions, hundreds of thousands of people fleeing persecution had a chance to come to the United States when he was commander-in-chief. And millions more resettled in the US after he left office.
“He was well aware of the political cost,” says Carter biographer Kai Bird, author of “The Outlier: The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter.” When it came to taking on tough issues, Bird says, Carter didn’t shy away from doing what he thought was right.
And that’s where Carter found himself in the summer of 1979, making a decision that went against what polls said that most Americans wanted.
The scenes from the other side of the world were devastating.
Hundreds of thousands of people fleeing government oppression in Southeast Asia were taking to the sea, and many were drowning as they tried to escape.
A crisis that began before Carter took office was becoming increasingly dire by the day. In 1978, Carter ordered American ships to pick up refugees fleeing by boat. A year later, the exodus had only intensified.
And as world leaders met to discuss top issues facing their countries, Carter took a dramatic stand, announcing the US would double the number of refugees accepted monthly from the region from 7,000 to 14,000. The move, according to news reports at the time, was aimed at pushing other countries to take similarly significant steps.
It was not politically popular. As writer Thu-Huong Ha noted in a 2016 piece for Quartz, a poll from CBS and The New York Times showed that 62% of Americans disapproved. And a Gallup poll indicated 57% of Americans were opposed to the US relaxing its immigration policies for refugees from the region.
Carter did it anyway. [...]

Travel Quang Nam and explore the beauty of remote places
Hello everybody, I moved from Hanoi to Hoi An to live since 2014. I work in the tourism industry and I'm quite nomadic, travel everywhere. And after many years living in Hoi An I have learnt more about Quang Nam province, I see that this province not only has Hoi An ancient town and My Son sanctuary but also many other tourist attractions stretching from the East Sea to the border with Laos in Tay Giang, Nam Giang…
Tumblr media
Many Vietnamese people mistake that Hoi An belongs to Da Nang city and most of them come to Da Nang and then rush to Hoi An for a short time and take photos, so they think that tourism in Quang Nam province and Hoi An is not attractive. But actually we need more time to visit, enjoy and learn about the landscape, culture and people of Quang Nam province. It is truly a "Heritage Green Area" with not only world and Vietnamese heritage sites, diverse natural landscapes but also rich indigenous values of the Cham, Co Tu, Ca Dong ethnic groups… Whatever Vietnam tourism has, Quang Nam has it all. Every time I leave home, I have more interesting discoveries like Quang Nam is one of the cradles of the national language, is the hometown of former Hanoi governor Hoang Dieu, and is the land of Ngu Phung Te Phi (5 people who won the grand exam in 1898 Mau Tuat lunar year)…
Quang Nam beach tourism: 125km coastline from Thong Nhat/ Ha My/ An Bang/ Tan Thanh/ Cua Dai/ Cua Khe/ Binh Minh/ Tam Thanh/ Tam Hai beaches: In addition to beautiful beaches, there are many other tourist attractions: Cua Khe fish sauce village - Tam Thanh painting village - Tam Tien fish market, - Ban Than rock rapids - Phu Son tunnel pagoda in Nui Thanh district.
River tourism: Quang Nam especially has two rivers running close and parallel to the coast, Co Co and Truong Giang, with very beautiful landscapes. In addition, mother river Thu Bon flows from Hoi An up to Duy Xuyen, Nong Son to Kem Da Dung island and the basin at the foot of Ngoc Linh mountain range.
Route from Hoi An to Duy Xuyen district to Nong Son round way to Hoi An via Que Son: Tra hieu ecological village - Tra Ly lotus pond - Cham capital Tra Kieu (Sa Huynh museum, Champa/ Tra Kieu Holy Mother where the Virgin Mary appeared/My Son Sanctuary) - Vinh Trinh Massacre Remnants - Dai Binh fruit tree village - Kem Da Dung island - East Truong Son road/ elephant conservation area - An Viem hot water spring - Le pass - Hoi An. Go 1 or 2, 3 days, sleep in Dai Binh village.
Route from Hoi An to Tam Ky - Phu Ninh lake - Loc Yen ancient village: from Hoi An, cross Cua Dai bridge, follow Vo Chi Cong beach, the most beautiful road in the Central region connecting Hoi An - Tam Ky, across the Hoiana tourism complex (resort, golf, casino…), through Vinwonder, through vast white sand to visit Ky Anh Tunnel - Tam Thanh Painting Village - Monument of Mother Thu - Huong Tra Sua Village - Phu Ninh Lake, the largest lake in the Central region - Huynh Thuc Khang memorial area - Loc Yen ancient village, Tien river, Lo Thung (Tien Canh commune, Tien Phuoc district). If you have more time, you can explore the Bong Mieu gold mine from the French period and the scenic Ham Ho and White Waterfall in Tam Lanh commune, Phu Ninh district. From here, you can also continue to the Nam/Bac Tra My districts.
Route from Hoi An - Tam Ky - North Tra My - South Tra My districts along National Highway 40B: From the ancient village of Loc Yen, continue up to Bac Tra My district with tourist attractions of Hon Ba Mountain - Muong Village - Nuoc Oa tourist site, Song Tranh hydroelectric power plant. Going further, you will reach Nam Tra My highland district with 3-storey waterfall, 5-storey waterfall, Tay Du Ky waterfall - Tac Po cloud hunting spot - Ngoc Linh ginseng market - Long Tuc terraced fields - Ngoc Linh stopover bordering the Tu Mo Rong district, Kon Tum province at an altitude of more than 1500m.

❝ i demand to know what’s going on. ❞

'This was excruciating to watch,' Louise thought as her eyes narrowed in annoyance while she quietly observed what was happening in front of her. At that moment, a group of police officers was being held off by one of Anvil's personal security forces, preventing them from entering the building. The police was there for the arrest of a high-ranking official who was residing inside. The team had been at a stand still for over ten minutes without any discernible progress, even though they had already been in possession of the necessary warrant - the one she had drafted herself.
Usually, this kind of operations would be carried out by a senior police officer. However, from what she had heard and gathered, the area's police department had been extremely divided on this particular case. Many of the officers had been too fearful to cross an influential person of authority, so the responsibility of the arrest had been pushed from one to another. That was before it finally landed onto an inexperienced rookie, who were currently trying to reason with the security force, albeit rather unsuccessfully.
Supressing an impatient groan, Louise slowly stood up from the bench, for she could no longer stand by and watch this scene being dragged out. She was a prosecuting attorney, who was supposed to remain as a passive observer of the investigation. Nevertheless, if this seesaw went on for any longer, the suspect could use this time to eliminate whatever evidence he might have with him, thus endangering the case.
With a defeated sigh, the woman began to make her way forward, whispering a soft "excuse me" as she strode through the small group of police officers. She gently tapped on the right shoulder of the stuttering rookie police officer, and gestured him to step back so that she could take the lead.
"You're Mr. Russo, the CEO of Anvil, I presume?" Louise stated, making eye contact with the man and offering him a polite bow.
"I'm Louise Huong, the prosecutor who's in charge of this case. The police has an arrest warrent for a person who is staying here, and they are here to carry out that task. If my research is correct, the said person has hired Anvil to ensure his safety against potential threats." She tilted her head, "I don't suppose the police itself is included in the service contract between him and Anvil?"

With rapid increase in the middle-class population in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has been experiencing notable growth in its retail sector. This Vietnam skin care products market trend is anticipated to continue in near the future, owing to presence of relatively young population demographics. Low income consumers are witnessing increase in their spending power, which is anticipated to impact their purchasing preferences with regard to cosmetics products. Such consumers were increasingly drawn to more modern products, often offering added value features.
