Bollywood loves making the same story into movies over and over again. As examples that come to mind mostly because of my recent watchings: just saw it with 2003's 88 Antop Hill, based on James Hadley Chase's 'Tiger by the Tail,' which apparently also gave rise to the movie Kashmakash 30 years prior. Even more recently, the movie Chase a Crooked Shadow was turned into Dhuan and Khoj within a 9 year period. Or (if we're talking chronologically and not just "movies I've recently seen"), the movie Unfaithful was adapted into both Murder and Hawas - which both released within a month of each other in 2004. And now, we see Soch, a 2002 movie inspired by 'Strangers on a Train,' a movie which also inspired the subsequent (and honestly, much less annoying and much better) 2007 movie Strangers.
Soch tries to take the basic premise and change it quite a bit, beyond the basic premise of 'I scratch your back, you scratch mine.' We're introduced to this plot well beyond that initial meeting - which we only see later, after the initial murder, via flashback. And then it fits into the same vein, with a psychotic man stalking our protagonist to get him to follow through on what the man thought was an agreed upon plan (it, of course, wasn't).
This movie merges this story with the public persona of an actor and the Bollywood life. His name is Raj, sure, but late in the movie, we see a bunch of movie posters of his - and they're all from Sanjay Kapoor's actual movies (Prem, Raja, Kartavya - his first 3 movies, all released in 1995). We get brief forays into how fucked up the paparazzi and media is, bordering on stalker levels and downright invasive of privacy, and a poorly developed 'love triangle' between star, ex-star who gave up that life for him/love, and the director who loves him and whom he spends most of the movie with. By the time we meet this trio, the current (soon to be dead) wife is already reached near-psychotic break, cutting herself (and threatening it additional times), humiliating him in front of crowds because of what she assumes is his love for the other girl, and even threatening to shoot him.
Aditi Govitrikar's character has clearly gone crazy, no doubt - but also, for him to win a national award and be like "the person I owe this to the most is" and then name his director, who apparently has been in the paparazzi's view as his love interest for a while, and not his literal actual wife - you sorta understand why she's losing her mind. Especially because she was apparently an actress who gave it all up for him. Not justifying cutting herself or threatening to shoot him, but, like, what the fuck is he doing and does he really think this repeated "she's just a friend" is going to work when he's acting like she is more than that?
The Tiku Talsania comedy track, like essentially all 90s/00s movie comedy tracks, falls completely flat and, like the songs, just works to delay the progression of this story (though, of course, it loops in because he's the one who knows where the bad guy is hiding).
Arbaaz Khan is full-on creepy and evil, much like his role in Daraar. But he's definitely full on lost it. Danny's character's literal last decision in the movie is full on "WTF?" Raveena Tandon does make an impact, but also spend the last bit of the movie just being damsel in distress after spending the first bit of the movie just being 'married guy's possible love interest.' The annoying cop before Danny's character shows up is annoying.
Maybe it was the star cast (Jimmy Shergill, Kay Kay Menon), maybe it was the story better following Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (from what I can tell/remember), maybe it was the better songs (Farishta Nahin Main comes to mind), but I definitely much preferred Strangers to Soch. This movie tries to focus too much on pretending that Sanjay Kapoor is a star (nepotism, I guess), tries too hard to show Aditi as someone that Sanjay would wanna be free from but mostly just manages to make him look like an ass and her look like she needs some help (and distance from him), and spends too much time trying to convince us that he doesn't love Raveena until he suddenly changes his mind and is like "I'm answerable to no one."
Madhu and Preeti both deserved better. And honestly, probably, so did we (luckily, Strangers released a few years later and gave us that - Preeti and especially Madhu weren't so lucky though).

28 Years Of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (12/07/1991) Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin is a 1991 romantic comedy film. It was produced by Gulshan Kumar, directed by Mahesh Bhatt, and starred his daughter Pooja Bhatt in her first major lead female role, while the lead male role was played by Aamir Khan. Supporting roles were played by Anupam Kher, Sameer Chitre, and Tiku Talsania, while Deepak Tijori made a special appearance. The movie was a box office success and boosted the career of newcomer Pooja Bhatt while cementing Aamir Khan's status as a leading movie star. The movie revolves around a spoilt heiress who runs away from home to marry a gold-digging film star. En route, she is helped by a smart-alecky journalist only to end up falling for him. It is an unofficial remake of the 1956 Bollywood film Chori Chori, which in turn was adapted from the 1934 Hollywood film It Happened One Night. In turn, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin was remade in Tamil as Kadhal Rojavae (2000) and inspired the Kannada movie Hudugaata (2007).

Sometimes you struggle to find a movie, so then you just go based on "what is a song I like?" And then, after having the movie on your 'should watch' list for years simply because the melodic awesomeness of 'Sanwali Saloni' (literally like since I first heard this song, around the time of the movie's release in 1995), you finally get around to it ... 27 years later.
We have a 'slightly too old to be the lead actor' Dharmendra along with a 'slightly too old to be the lead actor' Jeetendra along with 'young guy who does a lot of singing/dancing and being angry' Kamal Sadanah ... and get this. It's sort of a mess, in that - at least now, 27 years later - the graphics are really underwhelming, like when they show 'Robin Hood' disappearing (even more confusing is that he appears to throw smoke bombs inside the building, and then we see him jumping out of the window that definitely wasn't there when he was inside - and we see this multiple times); and in that some stuff doesn't age well, like the comedy track (see the next part of this sentence); and that, like most movies back then, the attempted comedy track (I assume that's what the constant slapping of a laugh-happy servant was; and Tiku Talsania's role too) is not funny. But like, it's still somewhat fun if you can get past the 'high horse' of morality that Jeetendra is on.
Our actresses - Ritu Shivpuri, Sujata Mehta, and whomever it is that plays Lakshmi - all get to fluctuate between 'damsel' and 'going around slapping bad guys,' and that second bit is entertaining, though towards the ends you wonder how they keep ending up slapping the same people so many times before the bad guys give up and go attack someone else. Ritu also gets to do her fair share of dancing. And her and Kamal's characters apparently have some sort of weird semi-telepathic communication that she can sing a song somewhere random and he can hear it through a non-existent cell phone and know where to go. Also, at the very end, just out of the blue, the 'with the baddies the whole time' actress (Upasana Singh) sees her character do a sudden 180 (like, literally, out of the blue and with no real warning) and jump in front of a thrown spear aimed for a good guy and sacrifices herself for him. Like, that came out of literally nowhere and is completely unexplained. Speaking of the women, the bad henchmen (or are they goons?) seem to have no issue attacking the women in the final fight sequence either - they still get their asses kicked, by the heroes and the heroines - but at least they show a willingness to attack indiscriminately. Though they might've been better off just leaving, cuz they sucked at the one thing they're probably supposed to be good at...
I don't know if this is just me noticing it more now or what, but this makes another movie where our bad guys are fully into a song/dance sequence - like, singing, dancing, the whole bit. Admittedly, like Vishwatma, they're in their own lair and celebrating their own (short-lived, though they don't know it yet) victory, but still, they're definitely shaking a leg and going all out. It's ironic here because one of the secondary bad guys is literally like "shoot him, don't just talk dialogue because I've seen movies and it never works" ... and then the bad guys dialogue, then more dialogue, then have a song & dance with half the good guys tied up (aka, half the good guys are still free and wandering around looking for them). Yeah, maybe should've listened.
Face masks! A whole year before Mission: Impossible, too! And crazy amazing face masks at that, too, because not only did they have the face of these people, but the face masks also gave them the body/physique. Those are some high quality masks!
Sanwali Saloni is undoubtedly the musical highlight of the movie - if not just the entire highlight; the rest of the music is just meh, at best. The story is, to some extent, not bad - but again, it suffers from probably being too ambitious for 1995. Yes, it was totally Bollywood to have multistarrers at the time, and we've never really left the era of post-hay day actors trying to maintain their stardom and 'lead role' power, but that reality just didn't mesh well with "smoke bomb and disappear" Robin Hood or with a poorly fleshed out group of characters who don't really evolve at all (one is angry throughout, except when dancing; one is ethically good throughout, even though he's seen the bad guys literally murder his family; one is legally bad, ethically good, and never once falters in his desire to Robin Hood his way into the death of the man who he knows killed his wife & framed him, despite having numerous opportunities). Also, you'd think that once his brother is sorta onto the whole "everywhere you go to dance, Robin Hood strikes," maybe they'd try one thing where he dances somewhere else to throw suspicion off him. But, no, instead he just remains a very poor man's 'angry young Amitabh Bachchan' (very, very poor man's) and changes absolutely nothing.
Typical '90s multi-starrer with a bunch of actors going around fighting a bunch of baddies, multiple times - with occasionally interspersed songs, some dance-y, some melodious; some playing a secondary role in the plot - until the final fight where they finally kill all/some of the baddies (depending on whether or not you have one of the characters portraying a 'holier than thou' cop). Interesting decision here to make 2 of the main characters played by guys who were stars 10-20 years prior, but hey ... if your star shines bright, you might as well milk it for all its worth.
There's a lot going on and it is somewhat entertaining. Good enough, right? However, I think I'll just stick to Sanwali Saloni on repeat. I do much like the song, as I have for years; that definitely hasn't changed. It's such a nice song.
