Some concept art I drew of some modern O gauge tinplate trains.

The first drawing is from 2023 & it is of a Canadian Pacific "Royal Hudson" & was actually a redraw of an earlier concept that I did in early 2023. The original concept was for it to be standard gauge but I decided to go with O gauge because smaller is better or something like that. Also, the original concept had no color, so I took that opportunity to add color to the new one.

The second drawing is from 2024 & is also a Hudson. Notably it shares the same chassis as the Royal Hudson, sharing the chassis for the locomotive & tender. The Firefly Lines "100F" would actually be the base model of Hudson, with it's chassis being used for any other 4-6-4 locomotive that would be produced, the only difference for the models sharing the chassis would be the shell for the engine & tender.

Some other things to note:

The 2024 drawing has gained rivet detail on the pistons, along with having some "mechanical detail" behind the driving wheels (I wanted there to be something other than black void behind the wheels). I have also named the manufacturer of these things "Firefly Trains", in a nod to old toy train companies & the Frisco "Firefly" passenger train.

Occurs, I never updated my progress on the tinplate train. Or why I called it Slieve Glah. So here are the last pictures I took of it.

And after attaching the cab/splashers/firebox assembly to the footplate. Firebox extends forwards to hide the motor when assembled. 'Rivets' on smokebox and cylinder cover made by using a punch on the other side of the sheet, in roughly the right places. It's not meant to be a perfect replica, more of a 'that sure is a train that looks vaguely similar to the original!

Speaking of the original this is based on a S-class from the Great Northern Railway (Ireland), or GNRI. Specifically the only survivor No.171 Slieve Gullion, now owned by the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland. They use Slieve Gullion as one of their excursion trains on Irish mainline, albeit the engine is undergoing overhaul right now. (Link)

Anyway, the engines of this class were all named after mountains. I looked up 'Slieve G' in honour of the original. Slieve Glah is what came up, and I thought that sounded nice. The mountain is in County Cavan, within a few miles of the GNRI branch to Cavan town, which is another point in favor as far as I'm concerned.

Installed! I got the shelf layout I stalled in it's new home. The train on top is a S Scale tinplate set from the late 1950's given to me by a friend. It belonged to his father. Looking forward to adding more details and running some trains!

Steaming Success

What is it with model trains? I can go anywhere in the world and people of all ages and all cultures will stop and wonder at model trains whizzing by in a shop or a display in a heritage centre. I recently watched a big bloke in his model layout, at the Colne Valley Railway, slowly cleaning a long railway track with a tiny brush. The crowds of people pressing their noses on the glass were fascinated with the scene of this gentle giant engineer.

Perhaps it’s the steaming success of Thomas the Tank engine and chums with toddlers that makes children grow up to admire trains. For adults it can evolve into nostalgia and escapism from the manic Mondays of 21st century life. When I worked in a Toy Museum, the collectors I met reminisced: as children they could not afford to buy a Hornby or a Bassett-Lowke engine. When they became successful adults they hunted in auctions and jumble sales for these bits of tinplate.

There are many famous male celeb train collectors and landscape builders such as Rod Stewart, Neil Young and Jools Holland. According to another celeb maker Pete Waterman “Some of the best modellers in the UK, if not in Europe, are women now, and there are LGBT and transgender modellers (including Eddie Izzard)” he says. “You’d never have got that 25 years ago.” (Quote from the Guardian 23 March 2022 article by Dave Simpson).  Perhaps the use of model trains and model landscapes is something to think about when heritage sites plan new displays?

Going into Saturday, there were 11 bills and two resolutions on the Senate’s calendar, and similarly, there were fewer than 10 bills on the House's special (active) calendar this morning. Senate Bill 841 was moving from the House (inactive) calendar to the special calendar on which it would get its day for a vote. Sounds like an easy day, right? That would not be correct. Changes happen up and until they can happen no more. So, to determine what has been accomplished, the changes need to be reviewed to make sure each of them has completed all legislative action. Still, the Governor and his team will review each piece of legislation that has passed both chambers for his signature, for him to veto, or for him to let become law without his signature. During this session, 23 Senate bills were signed, 15 House bills have been signed into law, and 12 bills that were passed between March 5 and March 7 are awaiting signature. There have been no bills vetoed nor have there been any bills which has become law without the Governor’s signature. This has been an unusual year. Not only due to a change of vantage point but also because of the legislative priorities and what working those priorities looked like in practical application.
