Anon you’ll be so pleased to know that since I can’t un-stick myself on the actual novel at the moment, I’ve started writing a Titus novella first instead.

I'm pretty sure I've filled an oversized swimming pool with the amount of tears I've cried over Titus. Probably a couple of oversized swimming pools since you chose to bless my crying-over-Titus asks with art of him with his son t w i c e. (Titus is not the only absolute sucker for cuteness.)

Worked on the designs for some side characters today
Originally named Kest, Vir Vitari is the man who my antagonist “stole” his name from. He cast his birth name aside to take on the curse of a name that means “to be shunned/avoided.” He’s the closest thing my antagonist ever had to a positive role model.
Empress Julia Atossa Perdel is the grandmother of Lora, the protagonist. She was blessed with the gift of foresight, and sacrificed her life to save Lora on the day of her birth. What she saw, and why it necessitated the loss of her life, no one knows.
Titus Din Aquila is the father of Vitari. He was not a willing participant in Vitari’s creation, but once he learned that the woman who attempted to use him, Jocasta, was pregnant, he tried to save his child. Jocasta knew Vitari was a true Mage even before he was born and sold him to the highest bidder—the Deus Dominorum. Titus died attempting to retrieve his son.
Quintus is one of Lora’s Praetorian guards and the husband of Laurel, a healer and skilled midwife in the palace. He adores children, even though Lora gives him frequent headaches and/or heart attacks.

I don't know nearly enough about your original story all I know is that I need the AU where Titus lives and raises his boy
My novel-writing buddy was the same way, so here's a nice AU with way too much detail based on what we talked about
Titus rescues his newborn son in time, though Kest loses his life in exchange
Since Saphir (who otherwise would have been Vitari, the antagonist) is actually the first Mage in over 1,000 years (given that the main character hasn't been born yet), Titus knows he needs to get to the Emperor immediately
The same connections that enticed Saphir's birth mother to try and use Titus get him home in record time
The High King and Queen have no heir (yet), so Saf is immediately placed as first in the line of succession, in line with the old laws that tried desperately to preserve fading power of the Mages
As Saf's dad, Titus is established as the head of the brand-new House Aquila
Het gets to be a Senator
Given his humble background and love for a soldier's life, Titus finds great joy in tormenting the snooty and superior Senators, heads of Ancient and Honorable Houses
If Titus had died but Saf had been rescued, he would have been blood adopted into the Royal House Perdel
Given that it's very rude to adopt the child of a person who's still alive, the Emperor and the High King and Queen agree that Saf will only be inducted into the House once he's coronated at Emperor
And then, surprise! The second Mage in 1,000 years is born to the High Queen--Princess Ameliora Octavia Perdel
As per the same ancient laws that placed Saf in the line of succession, the two are immediately betrothed
Everything is happy and nice and Titus has a grand old time tormenting all the insufferable prats in the Senate

I've known Titus for all of 30 seconds and I'm crying.
Real talk, me too. Which I wasn’t expecting. Look at him. He needs a hug.

Here, have an info dump.
Titus was a Centurion commander in the High Queen’s elite First Legion. He was something of a flirt and trickster in his youth, and Jocasta falsely assumed that he would be an easy ticket into a high-status position in the Empire’s capitol. He made friends with Kest, who was one of the Deus Dominorum’s many low ranking slaves. Kest agreed to help Titus save his son, and was meant to provide the transportation they needed to flee back to the capital.
When Titus never reappeared, Kest rightly assumed the worst, and changed plans. He managed to get a station on the flagship, where the Master kept his newborn prize. Though he had no way to free the boy without getting them both killed, he did have the power to make sure the child grew strong enough to survive. After Vitari’s coup, Kest returned to his birth name and remained a loyal member of Vitari’s inner circle.
If he’d survived, Titus would have named his son Saphir.
