I was drumming my fingers against the cover of my steering wheel, trying my best to stop myself from smiling. Just the thought of seeing her again, made my stomach churn.

I saw from her Instagram post that she recently opened one branch of her art studio around the area which took most of her time lately. It’s already ten o’clock in the evening; and I was worried that she’s not home yet. I took that as an opportunity to text her that I’m in close proximity and that I can fetch and bring her home.

It was a half-baked lie. Madali lang naman sana akong makakarating kung hindi lang dahil sa saktong buhos ng malakas na ulan, kaya rin natagalan dahil sa traffic.

I was late for thirty minutes, so I insisted her to wait for me at a nearby cafe. Just to make sure, she’s safe. Lalo na hindi ko alam kung may kasama pa siya o wala na.

I arrived a quarter before eleven, and I am so disappointed with that. Pasado alas nuebe na rin kasi natapos ang klase sa Taxation kanina. Ang sipag magdadal ni Judge.

From the rear view mirror, I saw Rei stood up from her seat. She was wearing her usual dress but instead of her white shoes; she’s in her flip flops.

What a cute Ma’am we have here, huh.

Hindi na sana niya ako hihintaying makapag park, at susugurin na sana ang ulan. Kaya binusinahan ko na, senyas na ako ang susundo sa kanya mula sa pintuan.

Inipit niya ang isang blank canvass sa pagitan ng kili-kili, sabay bitbit ng tatlo pang malalaking paper bags sa magkabilang kamay. Nalintikan na dahil iisa lang ang payong nadala ko at siguradong hindi kami kakasya rito.

“Joss, you shouldn’t have..” Bago pa niya ma kumpleto ang sasabihin ay inagaw ko na ang mga bitbit niya at inabot ang natatanging payong meron ako. “Mababasa ka lang.” There is warning in her tone which I refused to acknowledge. I’d rather get wet, than her. “Let’s go..” I said in a gentle voice. “Okay lang ba mabasa tong ilang gamit mo?”

Nakakahiya naman kung masira ko pa tong mga art materials niya. Medjo tumila naman na ang ulan, at panaka-nakang ambon na lang.

“No.. It’s alright.” Bumuntong hininga siya ngunit nagpatianod rin naman. Pinauna ko siyang sumakay sa passenger’s seat bago nilagay sa trunk ang mga dala niyang canvass. Kababa ko pa lang ng trunk nang muling bumuhos ang malakas na ulan.

Bago pa ako nakabalik sa driver’s seat ay tuluyan nabasa ang polo shirt na suot ko. I immediately shivered when the coldness inside touched my skin. Rei’s eyes were throwing daggers at me. I can feel her frustration. “ I told you, mababasa ka lang.”

I chuckled dryly. “I’m sorry, nabasa ko yata ung canvass mo.” Trying to brighten up the mood or divert the topic. Her eyebrows arched, “Hindi mo na dapat ako sinundo.” She crossed her arms and looked away.

Paandarin ko na dapat iyong sasakyan nang bigla siyang humarap muli sa akin. This time with a more frustrated face.

“Seriously, Joss.. hindi ka man lang ba magpapalit? Basang-basa ka, oh?” Pinahinaan niya pa iyong aircon.. naramdaman siguro ang panlalamig ko. Pero mas malamig naman siya.

I nodded like a puppy, and started unbuttoning my shirt. My upper body is now fully exposed, exclusively for her eyes only. Ginamit ko pa ang natanggal na damit para punasan ang nabasang buhok.

Kukuhanin ko na dapat ang extra white shirt sa dashboard nang mapansin ang makailang ulit na pagkurap niya. Her mouth was slightly agape and her cheeks turned beet red.

Napangisi ako sa naisip ko. Do I look hot to you, Ma’am? I know Reniella isn’t the superficial type.. but with Rei appreciating my body, aarte pa ba ako?

Napalunok siya at nag-iwas ng tingin. Umusog siya nang konti para mabuksan ko ang compartment. Ayos lang naman sa aking hubad ako hanggang mahatid siya, ang kaso lang ayos lang ba sa kanya?

I wore the shirt and locked my seat belt. I also checked if Rei had properly worn her seatbelt before I drove off.

Malakas pa rin ang ulan kaya nag-ingat ako sa pagmamaneho. I drove slowly. Alam kong antok na siya, at maging ako rin pero susulitin ko muna ang kahit ilang minuto na nandyan siya sa tabi ko.

I used my free hand to hand her my phone. “It’s connected to this car’s speaker.. you can play any music you like.. para hindi ka ma-bored.”

She did not accept it, though. “It’s okay. I like this silence.”

“Or you want me to sing instead..” I added, along with a nervous laugh. Kapag to hindi gumana, ihahalo ko na talaga si Azrael sa chocolate cake ni Erin.

“You sing? Since when?” She replied, sounding surprised.

“Hmm.” Actually, I don’t pero nagpaturo ako kay Azi paano manuyo ng babae. At sabi niya effective raw kapag kinakantahan. Gusto kong idagdag.

I shrugged, “Beats me. I can always sing if you want me to.”

Rei shook her head, and went back to giving me a cold shoulder. Ay, di gumana kay Ma’am. We remained still for the next minutes.

Malapit na kami sa village nila kaya naman umisip ako kaagad nang bagong pakulo. I cleared my throat. “Reniella, sawa ka na bang magmura?”

Napabaling siya muli ng atensyon sa akin. It has been a while since she called me bobo and an asshole. I kinda.. miss that.

Wala siyang sinabi ngunit batid ang pagtataka sa gilid ng mga mata.

“Kasi kung oo” I bit my lip, suppresing my grin. Azrael, last mo na talaga to. “Pwede bang... ako naman ang mahalin mo?”

Her chinky eyes turn into slits. Heh. Sabi ko nga ihahalo ko na lang si Azi sa chocolate cake.

TFA:BOOK REVIEW

To Fall Again-a romance electronic book written by Jonah Mae Pacala or also known as Jonaxx. The third book of Montefalco Series was posted on Jonaxx Stories app last June 18, 2020 and ended by the 18th day of January 2021. The book tackles a very sensitive topic that some readers may find uncomfortable. A girl with a scandal and a guy who’s a total ass but always seeking for good girls. Brought together in a decisive society. Both were taught a lesson, one with a hard way and the other was worse. The message of the story is so timely, the unfairness of the society and the stigma towards women is on fleek to our present time. Women are often judged by things they don’t mean to happen. A simple gesture of girls that will lead to society in giving such judgements can ruin a person’s life and that is how the society’s current state this time.

This book aids as a comeback of the series after 5 years, a reason why it became a hit and is currently garnering 1.1M reads. It was once featured on Manila Bulletin’s official website for the reason that the fans flocked to Twitter after the release of the 26th chapter. However, this book caused so much trouble for the author due to the fans' opinions and emotions in regards to the book’s pace. The fans or also called as JSLs were very impulsive in casting their words towards the characters and also to the author itself. TFA is a masterpiece that cleansed the souls and minds of the fandom. It brought them to their unexpected realisations and helped the fandom recognize who they really are.

From my point of view as a JSL myself, this story has been a roller coaster ride for us. I’ve met new friends and gained corrivals along the way. It was once my coping mechanism in the midst of this pandemic. It made me realize and comprehend a lot of things. To Fall Again book is an eye opener to society's social issues so don’t even mock. Nonetheless, let’s talk about Josiah who loves Reniella dearly, willing to compromise and fall in love again and again only with her. A love that waits and makes you the better person and a love that inspires, truly is.
