3: what is your favourite genre?

hmm contemporary i think, whichever time period it happens to be written in. don't know what genre to call this, but something that's mostly abt people. also poetry

6: what books have you read this month?

will do this for may bc i have not finished a book in june yet so:

le petit prince (the little prince) by antoine de saint-exupéry. reread it when i was feeling a bit sick and wanted something short and sweet and i enjoyed it a lot!

wide sargasso sea by jean rhys. liked it a lot! very strong atmospheric writing and wonderful nature descriptions. i think i was expecting a liiiitle more insight into the characters. i feel like there was a lot left unsiad which i wasn't the biggest fan of in this case

kartonnen dozen (cardboard boxes? don't there's an english translation of this one) by tom lanoye. autobiographical coming of age story abt a boy discovering his sexuality and dealing with his love for a classmate in the 60s. it didn't blow me away, but i did like it! i thought the writing was fun and it was cleverly structured. i imagine it's quite strong in depicting a specific time period and also very flemish in mindset.

15: recommend and review a book

i recommened quite a lot of books when i did that book rec game a while back, so it was hard to find a true favourite that i hadn't mentioned then, but let me pick on i had to read for school, and which is actually a play.

the glass menagerie by tennessee williams! if you like plays i would recommend this one. it's been a while since i've read this, but i remember it being so delicate and fragile, imbued with nostalgia and bittersweetness. the human experience as both a very lonely experience, while also ultimately being about human connection. people who are stuck in the past, stuck in a life they don't really want, stuck into themselves. about memory and how it can haunt you, while also partly being a figment of your imagination as it never accurately portrays past reality. i read it during the beginning of the pandemic when we were all quarantined so that's maybe why it stuck with me, considering some of the themes, but i loved it!

Literair Haarlem en Kennemer Boekhandel slaan ten viering van de Boekenweek de handen ineen en halen dinsdagavond 14 maart Tom Lanoye naar Haarlem! De Vlaamse meesterverteller houdt een lezing over zijn recentste boek De draaischijf, op een manier waarop alleen Lanoye dat kan. In De draaischijf raken drie innig verbonden levens vermalen. Door kunst en collaboratie, lafheid en nietsontziende ambitie. Aan het woord is Alex Desmedt, bezeten door toneel. In Antwerpen werkt hij zich vlak voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog op tot directeur van het grootste stadstheater. Hij viert triomf na triomf, mede dankzij zijn vrouw, de in Utrecht geboren sterspeelster Lea Liebermann. Hij introduceert ook technische hoogstandjes, zoals een reusachtige schijf als extra bühne óp de bühne. Tijdens de bezetting wordt Alex benoemd tot directeur-generaal van meerdere Antwerpse theaters, maar de beperkingen zijn zwaar. Zijn broer, componist en dirigent Rik Desmedt, kiest voluit voor collaboratie, terwijl Lea, die niet meer mag acteren, wegkwijnt en ronddwaalt in een stad waar razzia’s het leven kosten aan duizenden. Kort voor de bevrijding wordt Alex uitgenodigd voor een delicate opdracht in Den Haag. Twee beroemde partijgenoten van Adolf Hitler zullen in de stadsschouwburg de opening bijwonen van het pas opgerichte Deutsches Theater in den Niederlanden. In de bevrijde thuishaven belooft de afrekening bijzonder bloedig te worden. Tom Lanoye (1958) is een van de meest gelezen en gelauwerde auteurs van ons taalgebied. Hij ontving voor zijn oeuvre zowel de Gouden Ganzenveer als de Constantijn Huygensprijs. Er is werk van hem vertaald en gespeeld in meer dan vijftien talen. Hij leeft en werkt in Antwerpen en Kaapstad.
