Yoruichi’s next stop, after returning to Karakura for the night, was only a few thousand kilometres off of being exactly on the other side of the planet from Caleta Buena (which would have been near the north of Hainan Island in China). Within India, she was most familiar with the states of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. As to what she was looking for, she didn’t share the common desire to escape the summer.
While hill stations like Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong, and Siliguri in Bengal, and Kodaikanal, Ooty, Coonoor, and Yeracud in Tamil Nadu drew tourists and locals alike to beat the heat and appreciate picturesque views, if she really wanted that she’d just go to Switzerland itself.
The truth was she hated the cold, and her definition of cool was rather expansive: anything below 20 °C struck her as unpleasant. She could deal with it, all the way down to freezing and beyond if necessary, but it was never her preference. If she could live on the equator somewhere, like Singapore, she absolutely would. But this wasn’t solely about temperature.
After some investigation, she’d settled on the Palakkad Gap between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. A natural gap in the Western Ghats, it allowed the southwestern monsoon through one way, and the northeastern monsoon and tropical cyclones from the Bay of Bengal through the other. She was more familiar with eastern Tamil Nadu, but there was nothing wrong with new experiences.
Her focus had narrowed to the vicinity of Pollachi, and from there to the fields around Vepparai, along the Aliyar River. Upriver (to the south) was a dam at the base of the Anaimalai Hills, with their tiger reserves and the intermediate hill station of Valparai if she really needed a local change of pace. The time difference between Japan and India was three and a half hours, so leaving in mid-morning in her gigai had her arriving just before sunrise. What greeted her out of the Garganta was...
Tumblr media
Yes.
Tumblr media
Something about this place immediately made her blood hum in agreement. She stood there in appreciation for several minutes after the Garganta closed and disappeared behind her. Soon she looked about, orienting herself, and set off in a particular direction. The next thing was to find a house with a view something like this if possible—nothing too fancy: even a shack would do as long as it had plumbing... Quick access to this was the most important thing.
