Saputara Hill Station

A picturesque hill station located 1000 m above the sea level with a nice bracing cool climate, Saputara is located in the forest region of Dangs of Sahyadari Ranges. The ambiance is very cool through out the seasons and the maximum temperature experienced here is 28 degrees in summer months. ‘Saputara’ means the ‘abode of serpents’ and a snake image on the banks of the river Sarpagana is worshipped by the ‘adivasis’ (tribals) on festivals like Holi.

As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Ram spent his 11 years of exile in the dense forests of Saputara. There is a deity of a serpent (snake) placed on the banks of the river Sarpaganga. Local tribal folks pay worship to this serpent god and celebrate festivals like Holi. Saputara is enriched with natural relics and bio diversity, with awesome climate of chilly air and the terrains covered with mists in the evenings.

Saputara Lake

The lake is on the base of Saputara hill station and is placed perfectly on the picturesque hilly surroundings. The surroundings of the lake are provided with many facilities for merry making, especially with children’s parks and play grounds.

Boating in the Saputara Lake is really a wonderful experience; Paddle boats and row are available for those who are interested. The lake and the surrounding amusement facilities attract many visitors; domestic as well as foreign tourists make it a point to spend some time on the bank of the lake to relax.

Ropeway

Cable Car

The place also houses some beautiful gardens and a museum. One of the main attraction of Saputara is the ‘Pushpak Ropeway’. It is considered the longest ropeway in the country and attracts a large number of children and young couples.

Mahal

The Mahal region situated 60 km away from Saputara is dominated by the Purna Sanctuary. The longish drive passes through the most beautiful parts of Dangs with high wooded slopes of bamboo.

Pandava Caves

Pandava Caves, also known as Aravalem caves, are renowned by the mythical stories of Pandavas, the great warriors of the epic Mahabharatha. The caves are located in an ambiance of wilderness at a place Valpoi in the district of North Goa, a border district of Goa with Gujarat. It is believed that Pandavas put up here for some time during their wilderness in the forest and they used these caves to offer their prayers to Lord Shiva. An impressive Shivling is placed inside the caves.

Echo Point

Echo Point

  Echo Point is the place where one can hear the echo of what he says, is located in Matheran near Saputara. It is one of the prime tourist attractions nearby to Saputara.

Sunset Point

An awesome view of sunset is the spectacular attraction of Sunset point, also known as Gandhi Shikhar (peak), in Saputara and is at a walkable distance from the heart of the town. This point provides a breath taking view of the surrounding tribal villages in their natural splendor and also an aerial view of wide spans of Dang Forest. The dense forest surrounding Saputara is dotted with picturesque scenes and many tribal villages. One can reach this marvelous sunset point by using the ropeway or by climbing the hills.

Setting of the sun in the dusk amidst the luxurious hilltops is really an awesome view which no visitor can miss out.

Trekking

Saputara is really a wonderful vacation spot for trekking with many established trekking trails and many unexplored pathways, still with unspoiled atmosphere and surroundings.The trekking trails in Saputara hills and forests pose mild to rough challenges to a trekker. It is really fascinating to have Trekking in the established trekking trails to Rajat Pratap and to Tridhara near Dhupgarh. The trekking trails extend up to Sangam. Mild trekking trails from Khud to Sunder Kund, To Jata Pura Hills and to the hill top temple attracting many tourists.

Valley View Point, also known as Sunrise Point, is a peak in Saputara, from where one can get a marvelous bird’s eye view of the down Saputara valley. Adventurous traveler need to make a tiresome climb of about 1.5 km to reach this spot. Picturesque surroundings with cool breeze offer an envious picnic location at the mount. Tourists visit Saputara make it a point to visit this eternal natural beauty and have a relaxation in the lap of Mother Nature. Lay down on the greenish lawns, close the eyes and dream the gifts of nature, valley view point is majestic.

At Saputara, a decent range of hotels are run by the private sector as well as by TCGL. Book in advance during the peak season. You can negotiate discounts during off peak seasons.

Travel Within The City

Boat Ride You can also opt for a boat ride in the lake present in Saputara and a boat ride can cost you anywhere around Rs 50 to 100 per head. This is not an actual mode of transport per se, boat rides are more of a tourist attraction and can be used to explore the vicinities of the hill station around the lake’s perimeter.

Cable Car You can also opt for a cable car ride in Saputara, as cable cars and gondolas ply to the famous Sunset Point.

Jeep Jeeps can also be rented out to visit some of the important sites and they cost of around Rs 200 to 300.

Cultural Show at Ahwa

As the tourist heads back to Saputara, a halt at Ahwa to enjoy the fast paced and acrobatic Dangi Dance would be the best way to say goodbye to Dangs. The dance had been performed at the Festival of India in Paris and is one of the most entertaining dances of this region. Held at the open-air theatre Rangupvan, it’s worth giving a visit.

Dangs Darbar

An annual colourful tribal festival held prior to Holi (generally March/April), at Ahwa. its a five day fun filled colourful affair where the tribals congregate to celebrate an old custom of political pensions given to the tribal kings. There is merry making, dance and music, colour and a brisk buying and selling of tribal wares. The tourist can participate and enjoy the festivities of this unique celebration.

Shopping

A small private outlet selling locally crafted items fashioned out of Bamboo roots and chips. Unique items like the big sized bamboo lamps, kangaroos, deer are available only here and not elsewhere in the region.

How To Get There

Saputara By Air Mumbai Chatrapati Shivaji International airport, which is 360 km away from Saputara, is the nearest airport. All the major airlines have service from Mumbai to all major cities in India and many cities abroad including Singapore, Hong Kong, Colombo and gulf countries. Taxis are available from Mumbai to Saputara and costs about Rs 7000.

Saputara By Train Waghai railway station is about 50 km away from Saputara city center. This station is directly connected with Mumbai and regular train services are available from here to many cities in India. Taxis are also available in the railway station and fare is about Rs 900 to the heart of the city.

Nearest Railway Station Kikakui Road (KKRD) – 46 km

Saputara By Bus Saputara is well connected to all neighboring cities by Government owned buses. Private A/C and non A/C deluxe buses are also available from Saputara to many cities in the State including Mumbai and Pune (275 km). Bus fare is about Rs 3 to Rs 4 per head.
