Cape Coral Police say a Sunday afternoon crash in which one driver rear-ended another ended in a melee when one grabbed a golf club and busted out the windows of a car with people inside.
They found Antonio Guzman Garcia, 38, covered in blood, and he now faces 11 charges linked to the crash including drunken driving, intimidating a police officer, battery and destruction of property. Lee County Jail records list him as a transient.
Police said about 12:20 p.m., that witnesses said Guzman Garcia rear-ended a Chevy Malibu in his Ford F150, which was towing a trailer, on Cape Coral Parkway East and Del Prado Boulevard South. The Malibu, in turn, rear-ended a Jeep Wrangler.
The driver of the Jeep told officers when he and his passenger went to take photos of Guzman Garcia’s license plate, Guzman Garcia shoved him toward oncoming traffic.
The driver of the Jeep said they then stepped in to break things up between Guzman Garcia and the driver of the Malibu, who had a child in the car, and Guzman Garcia punched the Jeep's passenger on the side of the head. The pair returned to the Jeep.

Guzman Garcia retrieved a golf club, with which he shattered the driver’s side window of the Jeep, cutting the driver and passenger, a police report indicates. The Jeep driver said the golf club snapped, and Guzman Garcia stabbed at him with the broken end. He drove the Jeep across the street to wait for police.
The driver of the Malibu told officers the truck rear-ended her very hard, giving her minor injuries. She said she watched the fight break out between the two other drivers.
Jeep occupants and Guzman Garcia, and Guzman Garcia broke the window of the Jeep and stabbing at the driver.
She said Guzman Garcia then approached her vehicle and hit her window with the golf club until officers arrived.
Officers found the broken club near the crash site.
Police said that as they approached Guzman Garcia, he was extremely agitated and appeared disoriented, telling officers someone pointed a gun at him.
The Cape Coral Fire Department arrived on scene, and while Guzman Garcia was talking to a firefighter, he appeared to go unconscious. Officers observed he had bloodshot, watery eyes.
While following the ambulance to the hospital, it suddenly stopped, they said. When officers opened the back rescue doors, they found medics restraining a combative and physically aggressive Guzman Garcia.
One medic said Guzman Garcia spit blood into his face, which was visible, the report indicated. Officers helped restrain Guzman Garcia and took him to the hospital.
Officers said Guzman Garcia swearing profusely, then he passed out. They could smell alcohol, they said. Medical staff at the hospital said Guzman Garcia had a blood-alcohol level of 0.177− more than twice Florida's legal limit.
He faces, one count of drunken driving, three counts of drunken driving property and personal injury damage, two counts of battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with the intent to commit a felony, criminal mischief, battery on a specific person and one count of threats against law enforcement.
He remained jailed Monday on a $71,500 bond. He's due in court July 8.

More Seascape Safeguards: Major Marine Protection Move
Tumblr media
A Leap in Marine Conservation
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has unveiled a transformative byelaw set to come into effect on 22 March 2024, marking a pivotal advancement in the UK's environmental stewardship. This regulation, aimed at curtailing the use of bottom-towed fishing gear, encompasses an additional 4,000 square kilometers of English offshore marine protected areas (MPAs), expanding the total protected marine space to nearly 18,000 square kilometers.
Protecting Precious Marine Habitats
From Consultation to Action Following extensive consultation in 2023, and aligning with the Government's Environmental Improvement Plan progress update, the MMO's initiative is part of an ambitious strategy to safeguard all 54 English offshore MPAs from the adverse effects of fishing activities. The byelaw is a testament to the collective effort and commitment to preserving the nation's marine biodiversity.   The Scope of Protection This regulation extends to 13 MPAs, crucial for the survival of diverse marine species and habitats. Among the newly protected areas are Cape Bank, known for its pea urchins and cushion stars; Haig Fras, a haven for jewel anemones and solitary corals; and Hartland Point to Tintagel, home to pink sea fans and fragile sponges.
Strengthening Marine Management
Continuous Evaluation and Engagement The MMO is not stopping here. Alongside the byelaw's introduction, the organization is reviewing further evidence on the impacts of anchored nets, lines, bottom-towed fishing gear, and traps on marine ecosystems. A forthcoming consultation will seek to address additional management measures needed to protect these valuable marine features comprehensively.   A Focus on Mobile Marine Species Part of the MMO's ongoing efforts includes assessing fishing impacts on MPAs designated for highly mobile species, such as the harbour porpoise and marine birds like the red-throated diver. Stakeholders across the fishing industry, conservation groups, and scientific communities are encouraged to contribute to this critical dialogue.
Voices of Leadership
Acknowledgements and Anticipations Acting CEO of MMO, Michelle Willis, expressed gratitude towards participants of the 2023 consultation, emphasizing the informed decision-making process behind the byelaw. Marine Minister Lord Benyon reiterated the UK's dedication to oceanic preservation, highlighting the byelaw as a significant step in enhancing the nation's MPA network.

Documenting historic shipwrecks off North Carolina
The Outer Banks of North Carolina are a world-renowned destination for beachgoing, fishing, and more. But what many visitors to the area don’t know is that the beautiful blue waves also hide centuries-old stories. The area off North Carolina is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, named for the many ships that came to an untimely end here.
This summer, researchers from Monitor National Marine Sanctuary and its partners visited and documented two of the wrecks that now rest on the ocean floor: the submarine USS Tarpon, and the passenger liner Proteus. While both wrecks are popular dive sites, neither had ever been documented before by maritime archaeologists.
Tumblr media

Stories of our maritime past
USS Tarpon has an especially storied history. The naval submarine operated in the Pacific throughout World War II, beginning its war patrol two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Throughout its tour, Tarpon sank several Japanese vessels, and became the first U.S. submarine to sink a German raider in the Pacific. For its service in World War II, the submarine earned seven battle stars denoting its accomplishments as a warship.
After the end of the war, Tarpon was decommissioned and became a training submarine for the 8th Naval District, based in New Orleans. In 1956, it was sold for scrap – but before it could be broken up, it sank while under tow off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. There it has rested ever since. At 135 feet depth, it is a draw for experienced divers and for an abundance of marine life.
Tumblr media

Unlike many of the vessels in the Graveyard of the Atlantic, including Tarpon, Proteus was never a warship; rather, this passenger liner carried travelers between New York and New Orleans at the turn of the 20th century. The ship was modern, and for its time, it was luxurious, with heating and bathrooms in each cabin.
But though Proteus wasn’t a warship, the loss of the vessel ties into the story of World War I. Near the end of the war, on August 8, 1918, Proteus was heading north toward New York City. All of its lights, including its navigation lights, were turned off in accordance with wartime anti-submarine protocols. Unbeknownst to Proteus’s crew, the nearby tanker Cushing had gone dark, too. Around midnight, the two ships collided. Realizing Proteus was sinking, the captain gave the order to abandon ship. All but one crew member survived.

Recording the stories of the sea
This August, archaeologists surveyed these two historic wrecks for the first time. Diving on Tarpon and Proteus, they captured imagery of the wrecks and documented their current conditions. Biologists also conducted wildlife density studies and fish counts to determine how the wrecks are being used as habitat by marine life. Wrecks like Tarpon and Proteus are important oases for marine life, providing attachment points for invertebrates like corals and anemones, and offering refuge for fish.
Researchers also documented the wrecks using singlebeam and multibeam sonar, assisting efforts to map these vessels and visualize the fish density surrounding them. Using photographs collected by divers, Monitor National Marine Sanctuary archaeologist Joe Hoyt has created a photogrammetry model of Tarpon, allowing the wreck to be explored from above the waves.

Protecting history for tomorrow
Tarpon and Proteus are just two of the several wrecks being considered under a proposal to expand Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. Many of the wrecks included in the proposal are vessels that were involved in the World War II Battle of the Atlantic. Monitor National Marine Sanctuary maritime archaeologist and research coordinator Tane Casserley explains that “there are so many stories yet to be told off the coast of North Carolina.” By documenting and including shipwrecks like Tarpon and Proteus, the sanctuary helps tell the region’s story throughout the centuries.

Wrecks like Tarpon and Proteus are also popular dive sites, bringing tourists to the coast and bolstering the economy of North Carolina. Protecting these wrecks helps ensure that these underwater museums are maintained for future visitors.
Ultimately, says Casserley, the North Carolina coastline is unlike any other place. “There’s nowhere else in the coastal United States where you’re going to get wrecks from all these different time periods so close together and so close to shore,” he explains. “It’s a very special area.” By researching and documenting the wrecks, Monitor National Marine Sanctuary is helping to preserve this special place, and its history, for tomorrow.
This expedition was supported by East Carolina University, the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, NOAA Fisheries, and NOAA’s Restoration Center.

CAPE CORAL 🐚 CHAPTER FIVE 🐚 LIOCARCINUS VERNALIS
“ are decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura, which typically have a very short projecting “tail” (abdomen) (Greek: βραχύς), usually entirely hidden under the thorax. They live in all the world’s oceans, in fresh water, and on land, are generally covered with a thick exoskeleton and have a single pair of claws. ”
An unexpected appearance was stepping toward us three from the door, with two more unexpected beings in tow—Dylan Lee, and my parents. My mother looked like a shaking, wide-eyed mess. Dylan looked to Ithaca at my left shoulder.
“Good job calling me when you did,” he commended, as he reached her side. He seemed almost as relieved to see me unharmed as my father. Dad pulled me into a comfortably tight embrace, holding me against his chest, and mother ran her hand up and down my spine.
The gesture seemed more a reassurance for her and her rattled nerves than for my benefit. But that was alright. After all, I could only imagine how startling it must be to go about your day enjoying yourself, then get a call from a stranger, telling you your child has been harmed.
Once dad pulled away, mom pulled me in, and I did my best to reciprocate. It felt, though, as if I were still in shock. The weight of the situation wasn’t quite hitting me—though, I knew it would hit me sometime later, once I’d regained my bearings.

Every now and again you come across a place in Australia that takes adventure to a whole new level, and Lorella Springs is the ultimate example of this.
On our 3 month trip through the Northern Territory, Kimberley, Pilbara and Coral Coast, we spent 7 days at Lorella Springs Station and didn’t want to leave.
Located in the northern part of the Northern Territory, Lorella Springs is a one-million-acre property that backs onto the coast and is full of hot springs, amazing water holes, waterfalls, gorges and pristine beauty like you’ve never seen before.
The pristine waters at Snapping Billabong in Lorella Springs.
The best part? You can visit, stay and access the entire property. No matter how young or old you are, if you love adventure this place takes the cake any day of the week.
With over 1000km of 4WD tracks, the most pristine water holes for swimming and the most ridiculous fishing you’ll do in the country it’s impossible to have a bad time.
Camp out at Lorella, and enjoy all that it has to offer.
How big is Lorella?
If you are like me, a million acres doesn’t really mean much. Let’s put it into perspective – its 4046km2, or more than 5 times bigger than Singapore. Lorella takes you hours to drive from one side to the other, and even the owners haven’t seen it all. Seriously – they had just found a new spot in the weeks leading up to our visit!
The vastness of the station means there is so much to explore.
Getting there
Lorella Springs is located 30km off the Savannah way, in between Borraloola and Roper Bar. The driveway is 30km long and consists of gravel, bulldust, sand and a few little water crossings.
You can get a 2WD or AWD vehicle into the station if it has a reasonable amount of clearance, but it’s much safer to go in a 4WD.
We went to Lorella from Mataranka via Daly Waters and left via the Savannah way into Roper Bar. It’s primarily single lane bitumen the way we went in, and relatively rough gravel roads out to Roper Bar (depending on current road conditions of course).
Exploring the property.
Where can you camp?
Camping is permitted anywhere on the property, with a number of spots that are popular to stay at. The main campground is located near the homestead and has a huge amount of room to camp wherever you want. Pick a spot near the rivers, in the middle or close to the toilets and showers.
There are no lines marked out for where you need to camp, no designated fire pits and best of all, no neighbours within a few metres of you!
There’s the main campground, but you can also camp all over the station.
Facilities and amenities
On the way into Lorella, you’ll see a huge number of signs detailing some of the amenities that they have. It really does cater for every type of person.
There’s a bar and a restaurant, rooms you can hire and some very basic supplies can be bought from the store. Flushing toilets and gas hot water showers had just been completed when we had arrived in the main campground, and there is a donkey hot water system on the other side of the campground.
All of your expenses are put on a tab, and you pay it on the day of departure. This makes life much easier and quicker.
Lorella provides many oppurtunity to swim.
Sign in, sign out
One of the safety precautions Lorella Springs has introduced is a sign in and sign out book. This is done purely because of the size of the property, and the logistics involved with ensuring everyone stays accounted for and safe.
Each morning, you head to the reception area and have a chat with the volunteers and staff. They will give you any information you require about places to go, water levels, track difficulty and travel times and then you put your name down in the book.
When you get home, you sign out. If for some reason you don’t make it back, they come looking for you.
Given a lot of people camp away from the main homestead, there’s another book to write in saying how many days you are going to be staying away for, and where you are going. It’s a great system that provides a bit of a safety net should you break down or have any trouble.
Every morning you check in with the staff at the station.
4WDing at Lorella Springs
One of the things that was so attractive to me about Lorella was the 4WD tracks. You could spend months driving around and not see it all; every amazing location is visited by using the myriad of 4WD tracks.
Many of them are gravel or sand and are quite easy, but there are a couple that you need high clearance, a bit of skill and are much more challenging than the rest. The staff will adequately prepare you for the varying conditions.
If you love fishing, Lorella Springs is the place to go!
Fishing
I have fished at some pretty incredible places around Australia. Lorella Springs blew them all out of the water by a country mile. Never in my life have I seen so many fish going nuts over a basic silver slice.
You can fish fresh water in many of the water holes and creeks, or salt water along the coastline and creeks. We spent half a day out at Rosie’s campground having an absolute ball catching queenfish.
They have a policy where you can take what you are going to eat that day, and throw the rest back. This keeps the fishing sustainable and fun for everyone.
Of course, pay careful attention to what you are told about crocodiles. The salt water ones are extremely dangerous and are found at a few select sites on the property.
You can keep what you intend to eat that day, and throw the rest back.
Hot springs
If you’ve never experienced the magic of a natural flowing hot spring, Lorella is going to blow you away. Just metres away from the bar and decked area lies the Magic Hot Springs, where you can grab a drink and pool noodle, and float the afternoon away. The water is clean, warm and incredibly relaxing and a lot of people make good use of this.
Throughout the property, there are a couple of other hot springs, including Nudie (it’s just a name – you can leave your clothes on!) which has water bubbling out of the rocks at a very high temperature.
The incredible Nudie Springs at Lorella Station.
Exploring the water holes and gorges
Through the week of our visit, we saw a huge number of water holes. Most of them left us absolutely speechless. The water is super clear, cold and refreshing.
You can take canoes or boats left at some of the water holes out for a paddle and explore; it truly is spectacular. One or two water holes a day makes for an enjoyable stay.
Being such a big property with decent drives between you see hardly anyone else, which makes things very special.
The Helicopter pool is just one the many water holes to dip in.
Can you tow trailers in?
A lot of people tow camper trailers, toy haulers, boats and even caravans in. As long as they have some decent clearance, a quality construction and you drive appropriately you won’t have an issue. I would probably not bring an on-road caravan in though.
Bring a portable camping setup
It’s worth having a small camping setup that you can duck away with for a couple of nights due to the size of the property. Leave your main setup and head away for a few nights; it makes exploring much easier and more comfortable with a lot less driving. We met a lot of people who didn’t have this and found it limiting.
To get the most of your stay, have a smaller set up for quick overnighters.
Firewood and fires
Lorella adopts the best policy I’ve seen regarding campfires. It’s really simple – use common sense. You can take firewood from wherever you want, but the further you go away from the homestead the better.
You can have fires wherever you want too, but again, clean up after yourself, keep it relatively contained and you’ll be just fine.
You can have a nice campfire when staying at Lorella Springs.
When’s the best time to visit?
Lorella Springs is shut during the wet season and re-opens when the track conditions are suitable. This is usually May/June, but it varies from year to year. The earlier in the dry season you go the better it is; temperatures are milder, water levels are much higher and any flowing water is still flowing.
Once the water levels start to drop it becomes stagnant, and a place you’d rather not visit.
Head to the springs early in the dry season to get the best out of your visit.
What does it cost?
A night at Lorella will cost you $20 per person, with kids under 5 free and between 5 – 15 years old $5 per night. There are some discounts for longer stays.
Be 100% self-sufficient
My recommendation is to bring absolutely everything in with you. There’s no shortage of water and their toilet systems around the main camp are great, but you want everything else with you. This includes a good selection of food, lots of fuel and anything you need for remote camping.
You can get Fuel at Cape Crawford, but other than that there isn’t much else around, and with the distances you drive around the station bring as much in as you can. You can purchase more diesel for $3 per litre on the station as required.
The beautiful Lorella spring caters to all campers.
Relax, explore or have a huge adventure
Whether you want to wind your days away with a drink in your hand floating around a hot spring, see every corner of the property or have a big adventure – Lorella Springs caters for everyone.
In terms of station stays, I can safely say Lorella Springs is the best I’ve been to for adventure. What are you waiting for? See you up there!
Where’s the best station you’ve camped at?

7 Benefits of Flatbed Towing in Cape Coral
Tumblr media
It’s often risky to transport any vehicle from one place to another. Road debris can leave scratches and nicks in the paint, and if you are using another car to drag the vehicle, it may lead to wheel or transmission damage. You can avoid most of these issues by trusting and hiring a tow truck company.
There are many types of tow truck companies out there but they generally fall into two categories: the one in which towing is done by lifting only one end of a vehicle, and the other in which the entire vehicle rests on the platform of the truck. The second category is called a flatbed towing.
Flatbed towing is the preferred method of towing these days. It involves a trailer or a truck equipped with a flatbed on its rear end to transport vehicles from one location to another. Using flatbed tow trucks is essential and has many benefits.
Here are the seven benefits of why you should call a Flatbed Towing Company:
1. Best way to prevent further damage to the towed car. The first thing you should think about every time your vehicle breaks down is its safety. The safest option you can use to transport your vehicle is a flatbed tow. Flatbed towing usually involves placing the entire vehicle on a flat surface which means there’s no risk of further damage even if it’s on bumpy and rough terrain.
2. Greater safety on the road. Not just for you but also to the passing motorists. It is known to be the safest option for towing. This method ensures safety by making sure that your vehicle is strapped securely to avoid swaying and moving.
3. Sometimes it is the only option for transporting your vehicle. Unlike other towing methods, the wheels of the car are not required to be running during the tow when using flatbed tow trucks. And in some cases, for example, when the vehicle has a broken axle, flatbed tow trucks are the only way of hauling it.
4.Versatility. Whether you want to tow a boat, an SUV, or any type of vehicle, a flatbed tow truck can easily transport your vehicle. As long as your vehicle fits on the flatbed, it will be towed. Traditional tow trucks cannot transport a wide range of vehicles as it is in the case of flatbed tow trucks.
5. Convenient. When using a dolly to tow your car, you’ll be required to first remove its drive shaft so as to avoid transmission damage. Well, when it comes to flatbed towing, your vehicle is simply driven up the flatbed platform, firmly strapped, and towed to your destination. There’s no hassle at all.
6. Saves Time. By using a flatbed towing, loading the vehicle is relatively easy. If your vehicle is damaged and cannot move, a winch is used to load it up. However, if it’s in good condition, you simply drive it up, and you’re good to go. All these save you much time than the traditional methods of towing.
7. Best for Long-Distance Towing. If you want to tow your vehicle for a long-distance, your best option is using a flatbed tow truck. Your goal, when towing your vehicle, should always be to protect it. You don’t want your vehicle to undergo so much wear and tear, right?
If you are looking for a Cape Coral flatbed towing company, Cape Coral Towing & Recovery Inc. would be your best option! We are your trusted flatbed towing in Southwest Florida.

Locksmiths arrive on location fully equipped to handle any emergency. They can unlock the simplest locks and decode the toughest computerized lock systems.
Many modern vehicles have automatic locks or key-less entry systems. Automotive locksmiths can repair or reconfigure these locks as easily as an old-fashioned keyed lock. Having the locksmith do this for you will save you big bucks over having your car towed to the dealership.
Professional automotive locksmiths are equipped to handle whatever strange thing you, your toddler or the local car thief may do to your car and its key systems. They possess the special tools and equipment to meet any need. Other automotive locksmith services include:
Opening your car doors or trunk in an emergency without damaging the lock.
Retrieving keys that are broken off in the lock.
Replacing and repairing ignition locks on many models
Re-keying door, trunk and ignition locks
Erasing old keys from locks
Most locksmiths offer vehicle security-related services around the clock, not only 24 hours a day but also on weekends and holidays. Keep the number stored in your phone - you will never know when you need it. Choose your automotive locksmith wisely. It's a decision that will help keep your car in great shape and keep you safe.
Residential Locksmiths
Modern technology has made available better security systems to protect your home, and those systems start with good locks. A residential locksmith will help you decide what types of locks you need for all the windows and doors in your home.
Locksmiths can install locks of many different types in your home, depending on your security needs. If you live in a quiet, suburban neighborhood, for instance, your locksmith can install a simple single-side deadbolt. On the other hand, if you are protecting a valuable art collection in your home, a locksmith can provide high-tech locks that include biometric features. Locksmiths can also install safes and vaults for your jewelry, coin collection, the family silver, furs or whatever other valuables you want to keep safe.
Many locksmith services can even install an electronic access control system in your home. The electronically controlled locks that come with such a system can make your home very safe.
Many locksmiths offer 24-hour residential locksmith services. They perform emergency keying services like lock picking and lock repair. When you've forgotten the code to your electronic locks, locksmiths can even get you past the password-protected entries. They can also provide lock replacement and test your doors to appraise your home security.
Commercial Locksmiths
Commercial and industrial locks may or may not resemble residential locks, depending on what type of business they are protecting. A small town in a safe part of town may have a simple double-sided deadbolt. A high-tech manufacturing company that may have lucrative technology inside is obviously going to protect itself in a different way, perhaps with card keys or even biometric locking systems. Professional commercial locksmith services exist precisely to assess the needs of all types of businesses and meet the needs of each with a customized solution.
Other services offered by commercial locksmiths include:
Setting up a master key system
Installing professional-grade safes and vaults
Unlocking those same safes and vaults when you lose or forget the combination or codes
Installing specialty locks like rim-cylinder locks and commercial deadbolts
Re-keying and repairing locks
Professional Locksmith can Offer Much More
1. Fast Services: Professional locksmiths are ready to handle any kind of emergency and provide guaranteed services. They are trained in troubleshooting methods and can handle difficult situations with ease. Your problem can typically be resolved in less than 30 minutes, whether at your home, office or car.
2. Quality and Versatility: There are many locksmith companies that offer services customized to meet your requirements. Locksmiths are versatile and almost always certified in all fields. The same locksmith who installs new locks at your home can service your business or meet you in a parking lot to open your car door.
3. License & insurances: Most locksmith services are professional and licensed by local government and police authorities. With these professional, the security of your vehicle and home is in good hands.
4. New locks and newer locking technologies have expanded the scope of locksmiths' work. There are many good online resources for finding information on locksmith. You can get a reputable locksmith service for emergency needs or to provide your home or business with a complete lock system for your family or your company's safety.
Locksmith offer competitive rates to deliver the best solutions. If you find yourself in an emergency in the area, then call a local locksmith. Most companies guarantee a 15- to 30-minute response time from the moment your call comes through. Place your safety in their hands - locksmiths are just a call away.

Cape Coral, FL
Happy Monday, February 18th, 2019. The Pearl is on route to port in Cape Coral today with Nora, Dave, and Jane in tow. We have a few errands to run up this way (about an hour north of Naples the area) and figured we’d hit the beach up hear afterwards. Since Jane is leaving tomorrow from the Cape Coral airport she’ll be our first house guest!
The sun is shinning as we pull into Cape Coral - we just pulled into Jaycee Park for a lunch break.

Dr Paul Lam Tai Chi for Health Newsletter October 2018
Hello <<First Name>>,
As I travel around the world I visit and enjoy many places. I have been to Manchester several times, but this time I saw it in a new light. Please see Hazel Thompson’s article below on the changes in Manchester over the last sixty years.
I have never been to Calcutta, but I hope to go there in the future to work with Kartikey Shukla and Sylvia Das. Kartikey is an architect and Sylvia is an IT expert. I am enormously impressed that they have both given up their very competitive professions to teach tai chi. A bright and enthusiastic couple, they are doing wonderful things to help the people of India, and they report on their progress in this issue.
Many thanks to New York neuroscientist and tai chi instructor Lucy Brown (members can watch her fascinating interviews at the Online Community) for sending us this link to a very interesting article on tai chi in the New York Times.
Yours in Tai Chi,
Paul Lam, MD Director taichiforhealthinstitute.org

Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats and Dogs
Hazel Thompson, Master Trainer, Sydney
I was born and raised in Manchester, England, in the working-class suburb of Rusholme, which to me seemed quite an unremarkable area. Recently I discovered that Emmeline Pankhurst was born in the neighbouring suburb of Moss Side in 1858.  A political activist, she became the leader of the suffragette movement and coined their rallying cry “Votes for Women”. In 1999 Time magazine named her as one of the most important people of the 20th Century, stating “she shaped an idea of women for our time, she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back”.
Back to the 70s, when I won the scholarship for the exclusive Loreto College Convent Grammar School for Girls. The Headmistress, Mother Victorine, was fond of telling us that we were the crème de la creme and that a “Loreto Girl” could achieve anything she desired. The school was in Hulme, a rather less select area, and, crème de la creme or not, we day girls navigated a risky path to and from the convent daily. A Loreto hat or scarf was a highly prized trophy amongst the less fortunate local teenagers, and we sustained many bruises and the occasional black eye as we defended our uniforms and ourselves.
Part of the curriculum was elocution lessons, so by the age of 12 I had lost my Manchester accent, which was replaced with a rather more refined Queen’s English, much to the bafflement of my parents. Imagine my delight, many, many years later at the 10th Anniversary workshop in Sydney to meet Anastasia Yianni, a Master Trainer candidate from Melbourne. Like Professor Higgins I recognised her Mancunian accent as coming from the square mile in which I had grown up, and we quickly established that we grew up just a couple of streets apart. At 21 we both married and moved to Middleton–again just streets apart. The years melted away and our accents became more pronounced as we reminisced about our childhood in Manchester.
We walked all around Sydney Harbour talking non-stop. We sang jingles from tv ads “Anytime, anyplace, anywhere, there’s a wonderful world you can share, it’s the bright taste, the right taste of Martini). We remembered our favourite TV programs–The Woodentops, Bill and Ben, The Clangers and the still-going Blue Peter. All classics in our eyes.
I am now back in Manchester for Dr Lam’s workshops. Yesterday we went to the Midland Hotel for afternoon tea, and it came back to me that in my early 20s my friends and I would visit the Tommy Duck’s public house, built in 1896, which was directly across the road from the Midland, standing in the midst of demolished buildings.  Legend had it that the sign writer was commissioned to paint the landlord’s name, Thomas Duckworth, but ran out of room.
On the site now is a Premier Inn, but back then the Tommy Ducks featured coffee tables made from glass-topped coffins and a large collection of ladies’ briefs nailed to the ceiling. The landlord would offer a free drink to any female of any age who would remove her undies at the bar. (Please remember this was the 80s, sexism had yet to be discovered!) Female students quickly caught on and would don two pairs, hence retaining their modesty whilst enjoying a free beer. Not only students–there were some rather voluminous garments up there! Personally, I preferred to pay for my drinks.  As Manchester city centre became more developed a preservation order was applied for but ran out at midnight on February 12th, 1993. The council offices were closed, and the bulldozers moved in at 3 am before anyone could reapply. By the next morning the site was completely cleared, and it was then referred to by the locals as the pub that disappeared in the middle of the night.
During the workshop we are staying in the fashionable area of Salford Quays, a very pleasant and prosperous area, full of cafes, and designer shops. Wind back to my teens when the area was part of the Manchester Docks complex, including the Manchester Ship Canal. Other major ports in Manchester were bombed extensively during the Blitz, so Manchester became the UK’s third busiest port, and employed a great many people.
The emphasis was on industry, rather than atmosphere, and the water was dank and polluted, with many semi-derelict warehouses crumbling along the canal.  During the 1970s containerisation was introduced and the increasing size of freight-carrying ships meant they could no longer navigate the ship canal.  This, combined with increased trading with Europe and the east, saw the use of Manchester Docks decrease and many jobs lost.
Recognising the need to redevelop the area, Salford City Council purchased the docks in 1984 using a derelict land grant.  The Salford Quays Development Plan was adopted in May 1985, proposing complete reclamation and development of the area for commercial, residential and leisure use. Subsequently, it became one of the largest urban redevelopment areas in the UK, with beautifully landscaped canals, peaceful walks and the Salford Wake Park where people can learn to water ski and wakeboard in the middle of the city, towed by sophisticated pulleys which eliminate the noise and damage caused by speedboats.
The water has been extensively cleaned and aerated, and fish now thrive there, along with geese, swans, ducks, kingfishers and herons. Foxes and bats can be seen at dusk around the designer apartments. It is home to the BBC Television Studios, Independent TV and Media City. All in all, I find it totally unrecognisable from the Salford of my teens!
The painter LS Lowry was born in a prosperous area of Manchester, but a change in fortune meant that his family moved to Pendlebury, a more industrial area. To help make ends meet, Lowry left school at 16 and clerked at an accountancy firm. Lowry was never a full-time artist, in his early twenties he took a job as a rent collector, which lasted for forty years. Given his day job and the seemingly naïve style of his paintings, it was long assumed that Lowry was self-taught. However, he did take evening classes in painting and drawing at the Salford School of Art and Municipal College of Art.
I confess I was never a Lowry fan, but he did document a different way of life with his paintings of workers leaving the factory gates as the whistle blew, and grim northern scenes. He has certainly left his mark on Salford though, with the Matchstick Man restaurant (named after his stick-figure paintings), the Lowry Theatre and even the Lowry Outlet Mall.    His work was well recognised and exhibited, and he was even offered a knighthood in 1968, which he turned down, telling the Prime Minister at the time, Harold Wilson: “All my life I have felt most strongly against social distinction of any kind”.   Manchester may have changed quite dramatically in appearance, but I’m happy to report that the locals are as friendly as ever, with a great sense of humour.  Also, the fish, chips and mushy peas are still the best in the world, no arguments permitted.

A Letter to Dr Lam
Gene Vineta, Retired Captain, World Airways
It’s hard to believe that the USA Annual Tai Chi Conference at the Pacific University was just 2 months ago. I am still on a High Energy from all the practice… It seems only a few days ago after the arrival on Friday, that we were getting ourselves ready for a weekend of the Pre-Conference and the Forms 24 with you Dr. Lam and all the instructors, where we were able to meet and practice with almost all the instructors, including you. What a feeling that Saturday and Sunday, the feeling was AWESOME, and I mean it in every sense of the word.
Sunday afternoon where the Demos and pictures and just simply great all around. I cannot tell you how much your instructional DVDs of Tai Chi have help me overcome my Arthritis and improve my health at the same time. It’s follow your lead and practice, practice… My humble thanks to all the people and in the background in helping you put this wonderful workshop/conference together.   Now comes Monday morning meeting after breakfast and we are off to another tai chi adventure, this time it’s the “Exploring the Depth of Sun Style 73 Forms”, so for the week, we would be under the watchful eyes of our Instructor Bill & Linda Pickett who guided us on tai chi journey thru the 73 forms. It was great that you join us or stop by to check on our progress as we continue to Saturday for all the demos and pictures and awards.
At some of the morning meetings, you did several demos that was Inspiring to me and truly You are the Master. The Talent show was very good and a nice change of pace for the evening. And the Dinner/Dance was a Great event for all of us… Then it was Sunday and it was time for me to catch my ride and go to the train station, and you were there to see many of us going home.
This was a special trip/adventure for many of us, certainly me, this was my 1st time with a group and a workshop. There is no goodbye with the Cherokee’s, only until We meet again. I will cherish this time/event at the Pacific University, it would be great to return here again.

Product: Teaching Tai Chi Effectively Book  Rated 5 out of 5 stars  Posted by: Erica Bartlett
“Inspiring Teaching Resource”
Teaching Tai Chi effectively is not only a marvellous and inspiring teaching aid for Tai Chi, but its principles can also be practised in everyday life. Doctor Lam’s simple and sensitive approach to facilitating a Tai Chi class has covered every scenario and type of student you would ever encounter. I feel so much more confident and enthusiastic to begin my own classes with the tools Doctor Lam has so generously shared in this masterpiece of Tai Chi knowledge. My daughter is a high school English teacher and uses many of the principles in this book when dealing with bored or disruptive students. She also employs the stepwise method for teaching in difficult areas that students are having trouble understanding. In my personal relationships I am finding it so much better to be able to ‘step back and absorb the incoming force’. There is just so much wisdom in this book, it should be on the best seller lists. Thank you, Doctor Lam, for sharing all your experience and wisdom.”

Product: Tai Chi for Heart Conditions DVD   Rated 5 out of 5 stars  Posted by: Dennis Fallo
“Excellent addition to Tai Chi for Health programs”   Very well done and very much a needed program!
After going through the dvd program, I mentioned how wonderful it was to several places, including a regional medical center where I offer TCA. They can’t wait for me to add this program as well!
I hope that it will be offered as a certified program for myself and other instructors soon!
It is so very rewarding to see so many folks, especially older adults, benefit from the Tai Chi for Health programs! I feel so special, to be part of the Tai Chi for Health Institute. Thank you, Dr Lam….See you in Maine!!

Tai Chi in Kolcata – Just Like That!
Kartikey Shukla and Sylvia Das, Instructors, Kolcata
First things first, we are thoroughly enjoying our journey towards establishing Tai Chi for Health following in my city. Up until now, many people have joined hands, but we have never been this socially active. Things are changing now very slowly but surely.   We recently got in touch with a Yoga school here in Kolkata which had conducted Tai Chi/Qigong workshops as recently as January 2018. They get an instructor to fly in from the USA. We have also got Program Head of one Autism Management Center very interested in introducing Tai Chi, but as it is with everything, she must seek permission from her Directors, etc., so it may take some time. As we are approaching the most important festival in this region, which is in the third week of October, every new venture needs to wait until the festival is over. We are eagerly looking forward to November. Many new things may happen, and if they don’t, we are ready to keep working on it. There is such a variety of places that we are in talks with right now. A few seem to know about Tai Chi just enough to get in touch with us or respond enthusiastically if we have reached out first. There are more than a few cold responses, but generally because we could not get through to the right person. One of the very interesting calls we received recently was from a Jain Monastery, where the Chief Guru is keen to know about Tai Chi. Since the Guru doesn’t talk on the phone, a disciple called us, and he found us on the institute website. Isn’t that exciting? Tai Chi may find its way to a non-Buddhist monastery, which might be first at least in India.   Kolkata is a slow-moving city, so our Tai Chi ship is also tugging along, however slow it may be.   The class we started before January 2018 workshop had to be closed soon after we returned from Australia, but since April 2018 we have started several new classes. Some of those we had to close due to lack of audience, but on average we are teaching about 12-15 students per month. We hope to increase that figure November onward. It will be exhilarating to watch the future unfold, especially while being in the middle of it. We will keep you posted, as it gives us great happiness to communicate with you through any medium. I am enjoying writing this and may send more in future.   It has been just six or seven months since we have been really into it. From September 2017 to February 2018 we didn’t have any direction, and it took us two months of brainstorming and work to get few classes to start. Counting from April 2018 we believe we have made decent progress – it is really amazing how sometimes things work out and how sometimes they don’t. We in general never push anyone or anything too hard. I saw Denise Murray’s video and I was pleasantly surprised that Sylvia and I have been following most of the things she talked about. It is indeed a matter of great pride to be associated with the Institute!
Just yesterday one of my students, who is 78 years old, told me that he has a Defibrillator machine on his heart (also called an ICD) and I didn’t know that before. I was surprised to know that he also goes swimming with that machine. He never misses a class if he is in Kolkata, he is always smiling and eager to learn. There is another set of students who really haunted me to start a class in their neighbourhood. We may have just a handful of students yet, but all of them are inspiration enough to keep going on. One of my students recently dropped out despite liking the class very much. According to him, his knees are not able to sustain the 60-minute session. Also, he felt as if his knee pain has increased after the class. I was astonished to know that as not once he complained about his discomfort to me nor he ever took a break to sit and just observe. I mentioned that many times in the class as per my training to take rest if there is any sort of discomfort. I am still a little sad to lose a sincere student.   Sylvia is also completely free from her office commitments, very actively involved in this task we have on our hands. I would be lost without her.
We have been practicing regularly just as well, mornings are dedicated to practicing and evenings are for classes. We are yet to have morning classes, but we are planning to have some soon. As always, these things will take time.    I have learned Sword 32 forms the DVD we bought this year in Wollongong and now helping Sylvia to learn it too. Right before we returned to India in September 2017, we had few months of training on Sword form 51 with a teacher in Singapore, which helped us in learning quickly from the DVD. We are really enjoying that, I think having a sword in hand is slowly increasing our understanding of Sun 73 and Yang 24. Especially, Sun 73 has never felt same ever since we have returned from 20th-anniversary workshop. It may sound funny to some, but I think whenever I go out to practice among the trees early in the morning, I feel the trees around me are happy and filling me with positive energy. I myself try not to think too much on this.   A 23-year-old who is probably our best student here is hoping to be an Instructor. I have been training her keeping that in mind too. I really hope she can continue learning and get certified as an instructor, so we will have company – reaching out to 14 million people will be much better if our team increases! We still don’t have an idea how we are going to take it to Mumbai, Delhi and other places. But we have a firm belief that just like tai chi has made its way to Kolkata, we will find a way to take it to other parts of India, too. Just earlier today a guy called me from another state in India. He has learned a few things from the online lessons he could manage to get hold of. He follows you keenly considers you as his Guru, and he hopes to meet you sometime soon. The enthusiasm he talked with I think he can be another future instructor – we’ll see how it goes. It generally excites me if I can see a future instructor in someone, but we need to see how much people put their words in action. We are happy that we could keep our words true when we met you in May 2016 in Singapore, you may not remember, but we committed to do this in that Exploring Depth of TCA workshop you conducted.   It has been all good since that day, I still can remember how deeply moved we both were in that workshop. Each day since has been great, first learning Tai Chi followed by days trying to spread it in Kolkata. Each day has been different, and we are just going with the flow.

Humour, Laughter and Radiant Health
Dr Bob McBrien, Master Trainer, Salisbury, MD, USA
While reading Dr Dan Siegel’s new book titled “Aware, “my knowledge of the benefits of humour & laughter was updated by how he describes how humour enhances neuroplasticity, opens us to new learning and adds quality to our relationships Remember, it was Victor Borge who said, “Laughter is the shortest distance between two persons.”
Once again, we look to the innocence of children to enjoy non-toxic humour and the delight we experience when we laugh.
Primary school children responded to their teacher’s request to finish famous sayings with these answers:
An idle mind is………………the best way to relax
A penny saved is………….. not much
Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, cry …and you have to blow your nose
If at first you don’t succeed………get new batteries
Don’t bite the hand that………….. looks dirty
Two is company, three is …… the Musketeers
Don’t change horses …………. until they stop running
It is better to be late than be … pregnant.
