A Tourist Guide to Entebbe in Uganda
When you look at a map and find Entebbe, you could be forgiven for assuming that this destination in Uganda is on the coastline. Wrong. Keep zooming out and you will find that Entebbe actually sits on the banks of Lake Victoria – a lake so vast that Entebbe has become somewhat of a seaside destination despite only sitting on the edge of a landlocked lake.
Situated around 40km from the best hotels in Kampala, Entebbe is a destination which attracts both locals and tourists alike owing to its diverse landscape and variety of things to do. And in this article, we’re sharing just a handful of the most popular activities and experiences for those heading to Entebbe for a day trip or extended stay.
A quick history of Entebbe
Entebbe was once the centre of Uganda’s governmental rule and was considered to be the administrative capital of the country – before Kampala took over and became Uganda’s capital city.
What this means is that Entebbe is just as much a part of Uganda’s history as it is a popular resort today, with the official state house and a multitude of attractions all housed in Entebbe as the once most important town in Uganda. Entebbe is also home to the largest airport – and the only international airport – in Uganda, which is why so many tourists use the town as a base for at least part of their stay in the African country.
Best things to do in Entebbe
We can’t talk about the best things to do in Entebbe and not focus on its location on the edge of Lake Victoria – one of the most immersive waterways in Uganda. On Lake Victoria, tourists can enjoy boat tours, swimming, fishing, cruises, canoeing experiences, and so much more.
Due to Entebbe’s history as the former head of Uganda’s political power, it is also home to some impeccable places to eat and drink – with eateries to rival even the top restaurants in Kampala.
Another place to visit in Entebbe is the botanical gardens, which are popular with those studying plants and birds due to the varied assortment of both that call the gardens home. The wildlife educational center similarly combines education with experiential wildlife encounters for a memorable day out – or, if the great outdoors and natural habitats aren’t really your thing, why not visit the main market in Entebbe and pick up a few local delicacies and souvenirs to take home.
Fun facts about Entebbe
Finally, a few fun facts to impress your friends when you visit Entebbe. Did you know that the town houses a couple of different sets that were used to film Tarzan? Namely situated in the botanical gardens, the exotic location gave cast and crew the environment and backdrop they needed.
Entebbe is also recognised as one of the best sports for birding and birdwatching in the whole of Uganda and boasts the oldest golf course in east Africa.
Ready to plan your next trip to Uganda? Make sure that you add Entebbe to your list!

What is Rwanda’s Gorilla Trekking Age Limit?
In Rwanda, the minimum age limit for gorilla trekking is 15 years. This regulation ensures safety and minimizes the risk of transmission of human diseases to the endangered mountain gorillas.
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is an extraordinary wildlife experience that requires a certain level of physical fitness due to the challenging terrain. The age limit is strictly enforced to protect both trekkers and the gorillas.
For younger nature enthusiasts, alternative activities, such as guided nature walks, are available, ensuring everyone can enjoy Rwanda’s remarkable wildlife offerings.

The first Bahá’í House of Worship on the African continent, completed in 1961, is in Kampala, Uganda and has become a well-known landmark. Bahá’í Houses of Worship are spiritual gathering places open to all peoples. It was far from easy to get here. I took a bus from Kenya to Uganda over night, with multiple delays and had to switch hotels three times. But I was able to make it and listen to prayers and choir and meet locals. The stories have been touching and at times funny. One story was the Ugandans were skeptical of the Temple and rumored it had ghosts. There are no ghosts, but it is a very spiritual and peaceful place to visit so please go if you can. #bahai #bahaitemple #bahaihouseofworship #Uganda #kampala #africa #solofemaletravel #solotravel #travel #sightsee #femaletraveler #travelblog #nofilter #nofilterneeded (at Bahá'í House of Worship - Uganda) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co4bSsVtZcg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
