How Mosquito Spray and Yard Treatment Can Make Your Outdoor Spaces Safer and More Enjoyable
Tumblr media
Mosquitoes are more than just annoying pests. They also carry serious diseases like West Nile virus, Zika, and malaria. If you enjoy spending time outside, mosquito infestations can make your yard almost unusable. That’s why using a reliable mosquito spray and professional mosquito yard treatment is essential for maintaining a healthy, enjoyable outdoor environment.
The Growing Problem of Mosquitoes
Warm weather brings longer days, barbecues, and outdoor fun. Unfortunately, it also brings a surge in mosquito activity. These insects breed in standing water and can multiply rapidly. Just a small puddle or clogged gutter can become a mosquito breeding ground.
Because mosquitoes are highly mobile, a few can turn into a swarm quickly. Once they invade your yard, it becomes difficult to enjoy outdoor activities. You may notice more bites, constant buzzing, and even allergic reactions.
Why DIY Methods Often Fall Short
Many homeowners try to solve the issue with citronella candles, bug zappers, or natural repellents. While these may reduce mosquito activity slightly, they rarely offer lasting protection. Mosquitoes are persistent and often adapt to weak or inconsistent treatments.
Additionally, DIY sprays may not penetrate the areas where mosquitoes hide. They rest in bushes, tall grass, and under decks. A surface-level solution won’t eliminate these hidden threats. This is where professional mosquito yard treatment proves more effective.
Benefits of Professional Mosquito Spray Services
Professional mosquito spray targets both adult mosquitoes and their larvae. The treatment is applied strategically in areas where mosquitoes are likely to breed and rest. This approach drastically reduces their numbers.
Other key benefits include:
Longer-lasting protection
Safe application methods
Reduced mosquito populations within hours
Improved comfort in your yard
Many companies use eco-friendly formulas that are safe for pets, kids, and plants. This makes it a better choice for families who want protection without harmful chemicals.
Where Mosquitoes Hide in Your Yard
To better understand the effectiveness of treatment, it's helpful to know where mosquitoes thrive. These include:
Standing water (birdbaths, flowerpots, clogged drains)
Shady areas (under trees, bushes, and decks)
Tall grass and dense vegetation
Piles of leaves or wood
A good mosquito yard treatment includes identifying and addressing these hotspots. Professionals will inspect your yard and customize their application for best results.
How Often Should You Treat Your Yard?
The frequency of mosquito spraying depends on your region, weather, and yard layout. Most services recommend treatment every 21 days during peak mosquito season. This ensures continued protection and prevents new populations from establishing.
Some homeowners choose one-time treatments before big outdoor events. Others opt for seasonal plans that keep mosquitoes away all summer. Whatever your needs, consistency is key to maintaining mosquito control.
Preparing Your Yard for Mosquito Treatment
Before your scheduled mosquito spray, there are a few steps to take:
Remove standing water from containers, toys, and gutters
Mow tall grass and trim back dense plants
Keep pets and children indoors during application
After treatment, avoid watering your lawn for 24 hours to allow the product to work effectively. Also, limit yard activity for a short period to ensure full absorption.
What to Expect After Mosquito Treatment
Most homeowners notice results quickly. Within a day, there should be a significant drop in mosquito activity. Over time, the barrier created by the treatment continues to protect your space.
Depending on weather and yard conditions, the results may last several weeks. Rain and wind can sometimes reduce effectiveness. That’s why ongoing service plans provide the best results.
Choosing the Right Mosquito Control Partner
Not all mosquito control services offer the same level of care. Look for companies with experience, eco-friendly products, and transparent pricing. SMN Lawn Works provides professional mosquito control solutions tailored to your specific needs.
They use proven methods, trained technicians, and safe ingredients. Their services go beyond spraying. They also offer advice on how to maintain a mosquito-free environment long-term.
Why Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Controlling mosquitoes is easier when you prevent their breeding in the first place. In addition to professional treatment, keep your yard clean and dry. Eliminate clutter, fix drainage issues, and aerate soil to prevent pooling.
You can also plant mosquito-repelling herbs like citronella, basil, and mint. While these don’t replace professional treatment, they can help reduce mosquito presence naturally.
Final Thoughts
Dealing with mosquitoes is frustrating and can even be dangerous. Instead of relying on short-term fixes, invest in trusted mosquito yard treatment. With professional mosquito spray services, you can reclaim your outdoor space and enjoy summer without bites or buzzing.
A safe, effective treatment plan makes all the difference. Choose a trusted provider, follow simple yard care tips, and stay consistent. Your family and guests will thank you.

The son of alleged would-be Donald Trump assassin Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested Tuesday morning on child pornography charges after the feds found hundreds of sick images when they searched his phone following his dad’s arrest. Oran Routh, 35, is accused in a North Carolina federal court of receiving and possessing child porn — a fact which the feds discovered on Sept. 21 when they were searching his Greensboro home in connection to a separate investigation, according to a criminal complaint. Oran is the son of Ryan Routh, who is accused of trying to kill the former president while he was golfing at his club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 15.*** The videos show children as young as 6 being sexually abused, feds allege. There was also child porn on another Galaxy Note 9 that Oran Routh had on him, the complaint says.***

The Court also ordered that all defendants turn themselves in to the U.S. Marshals Service by noon on Sept. 11. “The defendants and their conspirators obtained more than $500 million from operating an online forum that facilitated the sexual exploitation of countless victims,”*** From September 2010 through its seizure by the United States in April 2018, Backpage was the internet’s leading forum for prostitution ads. Evidence at trial showed that the conspirators knowingly promoted prostitution via various marketing strategies. For example, the conspirators engaged in a reciprocal link program with an independent web forum that permitted “johns” to post reviews of prostitution acts with specific women. Additionally, the conspirators used an automated filter and human moderators to remove terms known to indicate sex-for-money, while still allowing the ads to be posted. Through this attempt to sanitize the ads, the conspirators sought “plausible deniability” for what the conspirators knew to be ads promoting prostitution. Over the life of the conspiracy, the conspirators earned more than $500 million. In an effort to preserve the money earned, Lacey, Spear, and Brunst laundered the money through numerous shell companies they created in multiple foreign countries.***

*** According to the indictment, Nicholas Graham, 52, of Warren, was a prosecutor who represented the City of Warren in Warren Municipal Court. Brian Votino, 52, of Niles, had two criminal cases pending in the same court. The indictment alleges that, in October 2019, Graham and Votino agreed that Graham would take action to benefit Votino with respect to Votino’s criminal cases in return for Votino performing repairs to Graham’s truck. To cover up the bribery arrangement, Graham instructed Votino through an intermediary to falsify a bill for the repair services and not to tell Votino’s criminal defense lawyer. According to the indictment, Graham and Votino ultimately carried out their agreement. In exchange for the repair work by Votino, Graham took official action to reduce the charges against Votino and advocated for a lenient sentence.***

Truck driver won't be charged in wreck that killed three people in Colorado on 15aug24. The truck rolled over & dumped tons of pipe on a passenger vehicle. Factors in the decision:
An inspection performed on the truck one month before the crash found no issues. The truck was found to be about 8,000 pounds underweight when the driver pulled into a weigh station along I-70 about 40 minutes before the crash, according to police. It was also over-strapped for the pipes it was carrying and had no brake issues based on infrared scanning. Black box data from the truck and other data points indicated the driver was going 59 mph in a posted 60 mph zone, police said. They found no signs of impairment or intoxication from the driver. ***

An angry Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took to the Senate floor Wednesday night after Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., objected to a bipartisan bill sponsored by Cruz cracking down on deepfake revenge porn generated by artificial intelligence. The Take it Down Act, which had co-sponsors from six Democrats, was likely to sail through being voted on before Congress goes into recess ahead of the 2024 election, the Hill reported. But then Booker objected, without providing a reason. Francesca Mani, a New Jersey resident, had testified about her experiences with deepfake revenge porn, a point not lost on Cruz. “I am saddened that the senator from New Jersey chose to give no explanation for his objection,” Cruz said. “He chose to give no reason to Francesca why she’s being denied.”***

Lucky to get away with $125k
The Denver City Council on Monday approved a $125,000 settlement with a man who was arrested and jailed for six days in 2022, then spent months fighting prosecution for the theft of a truck that he did not commit. Attorneys for Scott Carey filed a lawsuit in July 2023 stemming from what they termed as Carey’s false arrest the prior summer. *** Matthews was a chief investigator on the case, which began in April 2022 after two trucks were stolen from the property of Diamond Drilling and Sawing Company in Denver. According to details included in that suit, Matthews ignored errors and discrepancies in how fingerprint evidence was collected and processed from one of the stolen trucks after it was recovered. A print matching Carey’s was found, but only on a cargo box outside the cab of the truck, according to the lawsuit.*** “In truth,” the lawsuit says, “Mr. Carey’s fingerprint was allegedly found on the door to a tool compartment that was separate and disconnected from the cab of the truck. Mr. Carey’s fingerprints were not found anywhere inside the cab of the truck. In fact, other people’s fingerprints were found inside and around the truck, and a witness to the theft identified a man who looked nothing like Mr. Carey as the thief.”*** Carey was arrested on Aug. 12, 2022, and was held in jails in Arapahoe County and Denver for six days. He lacked access to medication for his kidney disease during that time, according to his attorneys. After being released from jail, the legal case against Carey continued for months until it was dismissed on Jan. 30, 2023.***

Effective Tips for Controlling Mosquitoes, Spiders, and Bees in Buffalo, NY
Living in Buffalo, NY, means dealing with a variety of insects, including mosquitoes, spiders, and bees. While these pests can be bothersome and potentially dangerous, there are several effective strategies you can implement to control their presence in and around your home. By following these tips, you can create a safer and more comfortable living environment for you and your family.
Mosquito Control: Mosquitoes are not only annoying but can also transmit diseases such as West Nile virus. To control their population, eliminate standing water sources, as they serve as breeding grounds. Regularly empty and clean birdbaths, flower pots, and gutters. Use mosquito repellents containing DEET when spending time outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity times, such as dawn and dusk.
Spider Control: Spiders may not pose a significant health risk, but their presence can be unsettling for many. To prevent spiders from entering your home, seal cracks and gaps in windows, doors, and foundations. Keep your home clean and clutter-free to eliminate potential hiding spots. Regularly dust and vacuum to remove spider webs and egg sacs. If you find spiders inside, use a spider repellent spray or contact a professional pest control service.
Bee Control: Bees are essential pollinators, but their presence can be concerning, especially if you or a family member has an allergy. To discourage bees from nesting near your home, remove potential nesting sites like old tree stumps or abandoned structures. Seal any openings or cracks in your home's exterior to prevent bees from entering. If you encounter a bee nest, contact a local beekeeper or pest control professional to safely remove it.
Professional Pest Control: If your efforts to control mosquitoes, spiders, or bees are not yielding satisfactory results, it may be time to seek professional assistance. Pest control professionals have the knowledge and expertise to identify the root causes of infestations and implement effective control measures tailored to your specific situation.
Conclusion: Controlling mosquitoes, spiders, and bees control in Buffalo, NY, requires a combination of preventative measures, proactive maintenance, and, if necessary, professional intervention. By following these tips, you can minimize the presence of these pests and ensure a safer and more enjoyable living environment for you and your loved ones. Remember, early intervention is key to preventing infestations and reducing the risk of associated health concerns.

Devotional Hours Within the Bible
Tumblr media
by J.R. Miller
The Ministry of John the Baptist (Mark 1:1-8, Luke 3:1-20)
Mark's gospel opens with the title of the book, "The beginning of the gospel." It was not a very promising beginning from an earthly point of view. As we look at the gospel now, it is a great river, whose streams run through all Christian lands and into many portions of heathendom. For centuries men sought in vain for the source of the Nile, at last finding it in the heart of Africa. Just so, if we trace back the streams of the gospel to their source, where will our quest lead us? Back to the heart of God we must go, if we would find the real beginning. It began in the love of God. "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son." The gospel was, first of all, a thought in the Father's heart, a stirring of the divine compassion. Then it grew into a purpose. All great achievements are first thoughts, then purposes, before they become acts. The gospel was first a feeling of love and pity in the divine heart. This was way back in eternity. Far back in the story of creation, when there was only chaos, we are told that the Spirit of God brooded upon the face of the waters. The words indicate that even then God was thinking of His children yet to be, as He was planning and preparing for their good. His love had no beginning.
John the Baptist was a great character. He had been foretold and his work described by the ancient prophets. Evidently John's life was "a plan of God." He was thought about and his mission mapped out, long before he was born. He came as God's messenger to prepare the way for the Messiah. He is spoken of as "a man sent from God." Every man is a man sent from God. Many forget that God has anything to do with their lives, that He thought of them before they came, or that He had any purpose in making them and sending them into the world. But we do not drift into this world in any accidental way. God thought about us before we were born, then made us, and sent us to do what He had planned for us to do. If only we realized this truth, it would give a new meaning to our life and a new glory to our work.
God's plan for everyone is noble and beautiful. He never made anyone to live a marred and stained life. He never sent any man into this world to be a curse, to hurt other lives, to poison the springs from which people drink, or to scatter ruin and devastation. He made everyone for a beautiful character and a worthy career. But it is possible for us to spoil God's plan for our own lives. We can carry out the divine purpose for us - only by doing God's will day by day as it comes to us.
John was a very humble man. He shrank from human praise and commendation. When they asked him if he were the Messiah, he said he was only "the voice of one crying in the wilderness." He did not care to have his name emblazoned. All he wished to be was a voice proclaiming the divine message. The message was: "Make ready the way of the Lord. Make His paths straight."
There is a picture which shows a hand holding up a cross. The person is not seen - only the hand. It is good to be a hand that holds up the cross. It is good to be a voice that proclaims the Christ. We would all do well to keep ourselves out of sight - and get people to look upon Christ. Too many of us want people to see us, and so project our own personality, that we hide the vision of the Christ that we ought to exalt and honor. We want people to see us, to hear and admire what we say, to love us and honor us. But what can we do for them? What can the teacher do for her scholars, in their sinfulness and need? What can the preacher do for those who are in penitence and sorrow? We would better hide ourselves away - and get people to see Christ. It is enough for us to seek to be only a voice, speaking out clearly to tell men of Christ, while we ourselves remain unseen and unknown. It is enough for us to speak our word or sing our song - and pass out of sight; while the word we speak and the song we sing - lives to bless the world.
The mission of John is described in the words which "the voice" proclaimed: "Prepare the way of the Lord!" Christ wants a way to be made for Him. He wants a way into people's hearts, our own hearts, first of all. Is the guest-chamber ready? He wants to walk with us; but He will accompany us only on paths of holiness and righteousness, in the way of obedience. He will never go with us in any crooked way. If we expect His company with us - we must see that the paths are straight. Enoch walked with God, because He walked in the same way in which God walked.
Then, Christ wants us to make ready the way for Him to other hearts and lives. If we can open a door for Christ into people's lives, we have brought them heaven's best blessing .
One great word summed up the substance of the Baptist's preaching. He preached REPENTANCE. John taught that those who repented must be baptized; but he made it very clear that his baptism did not cleanse the heart, and that those who were baptized with water - must be baptized also with the Holy Spirit. Water is a fitting emblem. It implies that there are stains which need to be cleansed. Yet we know well that water cannot wash off sin's stains. The spot that sin leaves on the little white hand - cannot be removed by any amount of washing. All the water of the ocean, would not make it white. Only the Holy Spirit has power to remove sin's stains. If we truly accept Christ as our Savior, He will wash us in the water of regeneration. We ought to be baptized with water - the Master instituted this ordinance and sacrament - but we first need the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
John's tribute to Jesus as he announced His coming, was very beautiful. He said that he himself was not worthy to perform this lowest of all ministries for the Messiah. As we read these words and think of John's spirit of humility, we must not forget that one night, at the ending of His life, Jesus Himself took water in a basin, and a towel, and washed and wiped the feet of His own disciples. Thus He himself condescended to the place and the task of the lowliest servant. Surely this should rebuke our pride, when we stop to ask whether we are required to perform this or that lowly service for some little one of His.
John's words to those who came to be baptized, were searching. We like to say pleasant things to people, sometimes complimentary things. John had little time for flowers or compliments. He told the people frankly that they were terribly wrong - and must get right, if they would be saved. We talk to people about their splendid ancestry and about the advantages of heredity; John told his hearers that their fine ancestry would amount to nothing, unless their own lives were right. Personal character was the test, he said.
It was solemn warning which he gave in the picture of the ax lying at the root of the tree. An ax meant judgment. The business of an ax is to cut down. The doom of sin was clearly told. But the ax was not active. It was lying quietly beside the tree. There was mercy in the delay. Judgment was waiting, that the people might have time to repent. God is patient. He does not wish to destroy. He wishes men to repent and be saved. He is slow to wrath. He waits to be gracious.
It is encouraging to see how the people seem to have been affected by John's stern preaching. "What shall we do then?" they asked. They seem to have confessed their sinfulness, and to have desired to turn from their evil ways. This should always be the attitude of those who hear voices of warning and calls to repentance. John's answer to the questions of penitence was plain and simple. The man who had two coats - should give one of them to the man beside him who had none. This is the great lesson of love which Jesus taught so often. The publicans who were proverbially unjust, extorting from the people more as taxes than they ought to collect - were touched by the preacher's stern words and asked what they should do. "Begin to be just," he answered. "Exact no more than that which is appointed to you."
These words of John's impress the truth that God wants nothing unreasonable. "He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you - but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8).

Creeping Slashers of the Florida Everglades: The Alien Invasive “Nile Monitor”
Tumblr media
How was the invasive species introduced to Florida’s Everglades?
The Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus) is a native African lizard found along the Nile River in sub-saharan Africa, ranging from Senegal to Egypt [1]. Being an expensive product of the exotic wildlife trade to the United States, this lizard has been a species of interest for being the largest African lizard (can be as long as 18 feet), for exhibition purposes, and research methodology [1]. When it was introduced to the United states in 1990, these species were kept as pets or they were kept in captive breeding facilities. However, with the use of their sharp claws, excellent climbing skills and sharp teeth for tearing, they were able to escape the cages of their confinements and crawl out to make their way into the wild [1]. Owners of the facilities and even pet-owners  may also release these lizards into the wild to fend for themselves if they become difficult to handle by means of difficulty in feeding, regulating, managing and if they become sick and are not valuable enough for the exotic wildlife trading [1]. Natural disasters such as hurricanes that damage the captive bred facilities is another contribution to the overall damage of the facility and release of the species into the Everglades.
Tumblr media
How are the Nile Monitor lizards able to thrive in the ecosystem?
As these lizards are native to the peak climatic conditions of sub-Saharan Africa, with similar subtropical climate present in Southern Florida, it has not been difficult for the Nile Monitors to disperse and thrive to its potential. Being semi-aquatic lizards, they have the capability of spending 15 minutes underwater before swimming back to surface for air [1]. The Everglades presence of marshes and water beds have made it easy for the lizards to find habitat in these conditions as well as on dry-temperate land of the grassy patches, on trees and burrowed under soil [1]. Weather surviving harsh winter conditions burrowed underground, fulfilling the needs of their semiaquatic needs by spending time on-land and in-water, the various trees and preys present to keep them in-tact, the Florida Everglades ecosystem has allowed them to establish and take full range on land while continuing to breed and populate, slowly taking over wetland.
What ecological threats do they pose?
The biggest threat that is posed to the Florida Everglades by these non-native reptilian lizards is that they are one of the top apex predators of the food chain with very few regulative predators keeping them intact (other than the Burmese pythons which are able to constrict these lizards during competition for a food source). Using their sneaky tactics, when prey (mostly laid eggs) are present, these lizards are able to make their way quickly to the food source, snatch the egg before it abruptly consumes its contents. Their typical diet consists of prey on-land and underwater, being newly-hatched alligators, eggs of burrowing owls, eggs of wood storks, eggs of turtles, and hugely threatens the brown pelican and the near threatened Diamondback terrapin turtle species as consumption of their eggs has declined their population size [2]. The issue has been consuming much of the native reptile and bird species of the Everglades, leading to the decline of their populations. This itself has edged species such as the Diamondback terrapin in a threatened place as their population size continues to decline as they prey these organisms to possible extinction. With consumption of the eggs of American Alligators, there has been a significant decline in the population of the native alligator species. Thus, before these keystone species go extinct, it is essential that these invasive species are removed from the ecosystem before the potential collapse of the ecosystem from the extinction of the regulatory organisms which keep the ecosystem intact.
Tumblr media
What are current solutions and regulations implemented to prevent further damage from this invasive species?
The following lists some of the regulations that have been put in place for preventing the further establishment of these invasive species which are similar to some of the other non-native reptiles found in the Florida Everglades (as of present, there have not been very much regulations put into place to control the spread of the invasive species):
1. Lacey Act- United States Fish and Wildlife Service [3]
- The Lacey act was amended by the congress to ensure that Individuals who have permission to legally own the Monitor Lizard are not allowed to participate in interstate or continental transport, selling, or trading. With permission from the state law, they are only to be used for exhibition services in sanctuaries, zoological services, education activities, medical or research purposes.
- Having a Nile monitor has been announced illegal in the United States (without special permit).
- Failure to comply with the regulations will be deemed as a criminal penalty with facing a fine up to $20,000 and a prison sentence up to 5 years.
 2. Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) [3]
- Involvement of early detection of these invasive predators and capturing them before they disperse into the ecosystem, aggregate and populate. Earlier preventative measures (although as of present, it has been difficult to detect the lizards in its early intervention).
3. Non-permit hunting [3]
-Should be a last resort
-Fish and Wildlife conservation encourages individuals to locate and hunt for the Nile Monitors when located (firearm is allowed)
-Permit or hunting license is not required.
What can I do?
1. If you or someone you know wants to get rid of the exotic pet, there is a website called “Exotic Amnesty days” to get rid of the python with no questions asked.
2. If you have spotted a Nile Monitor, record the location and report this sighting by dialling: 1-888-IVE-GOT-1.
3. Be able to tell apart Florida’s native snakes with the invasive snakes.
4. An app “IveGot1'' has been developed for quick and easy reporting. Available on Apple IOS Appstore and Android’s GooglePlay store.

How Fire Emblem Fates tried, and failed, to live up to Awakening.
Fire Emblem Awakening was a tonal and mechanical masterpiece. It set a new bar for Fire Emblem games and the like, so Fates had a lot to live up to. And boy, did it try. And fail. I've got about a million complaints about this game, but I'll list my top three here:
Setup
Fire emblem awakening's avatar, Robin, was relatable. Not in deep ways, but we could sympathize with their situation. They knew exactly what we knew about the world – nothing. They awoke with amnesia and were found by the royal family. Amnesia is a wrote plot point, but its popularity is not baseless. In games especially, dropping the player into the second act allows for swift action, and playing catchup in the story comes for naturally to a player who knows everything their character does, meaning dialogue and exposition can come across as being natural and not ham-fisted.
On the other hand, we have Fates. Mind you, I have only played Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, but I believe these problems extend to Birthright as well; the setup is bad. Instead of giving our player character no knowledge of the world around them via amnesia, they use a different method; seclusion. Corrin as a character is locked away inside of the Nohrian castle throughout their entire childhood and is only allowed in the outside world during the rising action of the story. This, akin to Robin, gives them no knowledge of the world around them. There's one key distinction, however; the family. In Conquest, Corrin knows their family well, and there is an existing dynamic that was built up long before we, the player, entered the scene. So, while Corrin knows nothing of the war and the land, they know much of these characters – and we do not. This flows very poorly. The characters end up awkwardly barking out their relationship to our main character in expositional dialogue before we ever end up even fighting alongside them, instead of having those relationships grow in real-time as we play and allowing us, the player, to form a relationship with the cast based in mechanics while Corrin gets to know them in the narrative. Corrin already loves the cast, regardless of what we think, and we have no choice in the matter. Fates makes the erroneous assumption that the player's interest in the world around them exists in a vacuum, but in reality an average player is interested in how the world exists in relation to the established characters and mechanics, not in the Deep Lore. In fact, Deep Lore is called just that because players who desire knowledge of the world are willing to go to greater lengths to uncover it than players who do not care. This is what in-game history books are for.
Marriage
Fire Emblem Awakening introduced a new mechanic: marriage. Your characters' relationships would grow organically as they fought, and this would eventually lead to (straight) marriage, which would eventually lead to children. The plot of the game involved time travel, and thus a new system was born; the child soldiers. Children are born of your units, your units die in the future, and those children grow up alone and scared, learning to fight for themselves. Eventually, they all get together and use the fire emblem to go back in time. They meet their parents. They introduce themselves. They fight, as they always have, but this time with hope renewed. This created a fantastic dynamic; a younger solider in their prime, with a child they know they'll eventually have but are meeting for the first time. Throw in some well written, natural dialogue, a few fun time travel jokes, and you've got yourself a compelling personal story. It also tied into the main plot in a significant way, having Lucina be a product of this same time travel fiasco. Fire Emblem Fates takes a… different approach. Halfway through act II of the story, you enter an alternate universe. The place is strange, scary and full of mindless evil entities. You meet a character who had been presumed dead, and you fight your way out with him in tow. Upon leaving, you're informed that if any of your characters mention this alternate reality to anyone, they will cease to exist. The point is then dropped, and the unrelated story continues. This puzzled me… A lot. Why did this exists? Was is setting up a structure for a future plot point? Was it world building? I had no idea, I was completely confused.
And then Corrin married.
This was my first marriage in the game, as honestly, none of the characters (save for Niles/Odin, and Effie/Mozu) had what I saw as a real connection, so I waited some time. Corrin and Keaton got married. A popup appeared onscreen afterwords. “A baby was born. The baby is placed in an alternate reality to grow up safe from harm, but a side effect of this reality is that time flows differently, making the children grow up very quickly.” Ah. I see. It makes sense now – the alternate universe is a plot contrivance, created in service to the brand of “You can have children and fight alongside them.” So then you pluck these kiddos from their isolated homes one by one, skipping over the major plot hole of 'Corrin spent nine months fighting while pregnant and then had a baby in the middle of a war? How long did this war take?' and jumping right to “Let's recruit child soldiers.” And so you do. You recruit every child to fight, much to the apparent behest of the mother and father. There is no reasoning to explain why these sensible adults are asking young teenagers to fight in a deadly war. It's simply a fun mechanic, and the game does not expect us to think about it. Except it strips the system of its most important aspects: A) The children do not HAVE to fight to save a doomed world, and B) The parents and the children know one another well. This has removed both the believability of the plot point and the charm in the interactions, leaving us with strange relationships bland dialogue that has an overabundant use of the word “daddy,” which should be purged from every writer's page as it is written.
Incest
You can just. You can just marry your siblings in this game. And have children with them.
At first I though Camilla's apparent attraction to the player character was simply because she was explicitly designed for horny fans to drool over. While this is still true, it's not the only reason she shows an interest in her sibling, as she's more than willing to marry and have children with them. “Oh, it's fine!” You might say. “They're not siblings by blood, you see, so it's morally fine!” Which is the stance the game seems to take. I am not going to explain why incest bad. I will also not drone on about how in the game's counterpart, Birthright, your player is related by blood for plot purposes, but as not to miss out on banging your siblings, each sibling will explain just before marrying you that you're actually not related to them by blood either. Nope, definitely not going to touch that subject.
Small gripes:
I lied about only listing three things. Here are a few notable issues
-You can dress your characters up in stupid looking accessories that add nothing to the game and 95% of the time clip heavily inside the character's model. The characters ASK you to dress them up, and some of them even comment on how silly this is during a war.
-“A+” rank is a cop-out created in an attempt to appease the Queer community without alienating any fans, and the fact that they couldn't be bothered to write any dialogue for the A+ rank relationships shows their lack of interest in queer representation while they sit back and get praise of major publications for “progressivism”
-In the Japanese version you pet your friends on the face Pokemon-Amie style to get them to like you more. I am glad they removed this for the western release
-In the final cinematic, they paid a team of animators to animate your character's first-person experience as they run face-first into their sisters boobs, which joyfully go “Boioioing” and shake like maracas as you reel.
-Sometimes you walk in on your allies naked in the hot springs. You walk all the way in, sit down, relax and stare at the naked peer for seconds before they say “Hey I'm uh… Naked here.” As which point Corrin goes “Sorry!” and sprints out of the room with the speed of a cheetah. I do not know why this happens.
-Keaton is unreasonably erotic when you marry him. Fully voice-acted, he whispers sweet nothings into your ear as the screen fades to black. He is a furry's wet dream. This is not a complaint.
-The story toys with this “abusive father with a family of children who are closer for having a common enemy with whom they have a love/hate relationship” thing, but fails to say ANYTHING meaningful on the subject. It's just empty story dressing
-At one point, you have to choose to either kill or spare a person who just tried to kill you. If you spare him, he joins your party. This goes nowhere, and puzzles me as a narrative choice. He doesn't even bother to betray you or anything, he simply stops mattering.
-Nohr should be dark, gloomy, fun and interesting, and instead it fails to spark the imagination even slightly, instead being “Bland fantasy setting but some of the trees are dead.” Give me some purple and black in that color palette! C'mon!
-There are two wolfskin characters. They are different genders, different heights and weights, but use the same exact model in wolf form. Compare these to the bunny people in awakening who have my heart forever, and this is a major insult.
Thanks for reading

Keep Your Roof and Gutter Clean
Tumblr media
There are a few things to look out for when you want to clean your roof and gutters. Some of these include insects, damage to your foundation, and rust and corrosion. If you’re worried about these issues, there are several things you can do to keep them at bay.
Cleaning your own gutters
Cleaning your own roof and gutters can be a daunting task. You’ll need the right equipment to get the job done, and a lot of time to do it. Not to mention it can be dangerous. Fortunately, you can hire professionals to do it for you.
It’s important to use a safe method for cleaning your gutters. This includes a high-pressure hose to wash the gutters and downspouts. But if you’re in an apartment, you might not be able to install a hose. A power washer is another option.
While power washing might be an effective way to remove a lot of debris, it can also be dangerous. One of the biggest hazards is unncessary pressure that can damage your roof.
There are other ways to do a thorough job of cleaning your roof and gutters. For instance, you can use a PVC brush for gentler cleaning than a melamine foam sponge.
Insects
When you’re looking for ways to keep insects out of your home, one of the best options is to clean your gutters. These are a great place for pests to nest and breed. They can also cause health issues. In addition, they’re a good place for mosquitoes to breed.
Mosquitoes can carry a variety of diseases and can spread them to people, including West Nile Virus. If you’re concerned about mosquitoes in your home, contact a professional to clean your gutters.
Many different types of insects and rodents can find shelter in your gutters. This is especially true for insects that are attracted to rotting wood. Some insects, such as the German cockroach, require moisture to survive.
Squirrels can also find shelter in your gutters. These animals often jump in from tree branches. You can prevent this from happening by trimming tree branches to keep them out of the gutter.
Damage to your home’s foundation
Clogged gutters and overflowing gutters can cause damage to your home’s foundation. Water can seep into your basement and cause structural problems that can be costly to repair. It can also lead to mold and mildew growth. This is especially dangerous during the winter months when water can freeze and expand.
Cracks in your foundation can be caused by a variety of factors, including soil erosion, poor construction, and pest infestations. They can also be caused by water leaks, which can lead to flooding. The more cracks in your foundation, the more structural damage you can expect.
If you notice any cracks in your foundation or windows, you need to act quickly to prevent further damage. Foundation cracks are one of the most common causes of water damage.
Preventing rust, corrosion, bowing, and bracket detachment
Using a good gutter cleaning service can keep your gutter system looking fresh. Performing the appropriate maintenance can go a long way toward ensuring that your home looks its best. A clean gutter can extend the life of your roof by a few decades. If your gutter is clogged with leaves and other debris, it’s probably time for a clean up. Keeping the gutters clean can prevent leaks and other problems before they happen. The best time to perform this kind of task is during the pre-winter months when ice and snow are at their most dangerous. This is also the perfect time to conduct a multi-pronged attack, cleaning and inspecting your entire roof and gutter system.
Gutter rust is a nasty stumbling block that can cause your gutters and roofing to fail. Fortunately, it’s not as hard as it sounds to remove a rusted gutter. There are several companies in the country that specialize in removing rusted gutters.
Avoiding pressure washing
You need to avoid pressure washing your roof and gutters to keep them clean and free from damage. Pressure washing can cause structural damage to your roof and gutters. It can also harm the environment.
Using a high-powered pressure washer on your roof and gutters can strip paint, rust, or other material, as well as damaging your home’s structural integrity. Some siding materials, such as aluminum and aluminum siding, are more susceptible to the high pressure than others.
For instance, aluminum siding can become loose or crumble when pressure is applied. If your roof is made of asphalt shingles, the high water pressure can strip the granules that keep the roof in place. This can result in a leak and may even crumble the entire roof.

How to Protect Yourself From Mosquitoes and Ticks
By Roni Caryn Rabin, NY Times, May 1, 2018
Just when you thought it was warm enough to venture outdoors again, health officials are warning that the number of Americans infected by mosquito, tick and flea bites has more than tripled in recent years.
Tick-borne diseases like Lyme and Rocky Mountain spotted fever have been increasing in the Northeast, Upper Midwest and California, and mosquitoes may be carrying West Nile virus and, in some parts of the United States, Zika. The only flea-borne disease is plague, but it, thankfully, is extremely rare.
There’s no magic pill or vaccine to prevent disease infections, but you can take steps to protect yourself and your family from bites--and it all starts with awareness, physicians and consumer advocates say. “Recognize that this is a problem that’s worthy of your time and attention,” said Dorothy Leland, director of communications for Lymedisease.org, a patient advocacy organization.
“This is one concern in life that’s preventable by following some simple guidelines, so it’s worth taking precautions,” said Dr. David Weber, a professor of medicine and medical director of UNC Hospitals’ departments of epidemiology and occupational health service, and a member of the hospitals’ Zika Response Working Group.
Here are measures you can take, some of which provide two-for-one protection against both ticks and mosquitoes.
Cover up, even when it’s hot out. “Build a protective shield around yourself,” Ms. Leland recommends. If you’re going hiking in tick country, wear long pants, long sleeves, shoes and socks, and tuck your pants into your socks to avoid any exposed skin around the ankles.
Wear a hat and a bandanna around your neck to cover up even more skin; if you have long hair, pull it back into a ponytail or braids.
Consider purchasing clothing that has been pre-treated with the insecticide permethrin, which repels both ticks and mosquitoes, though it may be less effective against ticks.
Just spraying closed shoes with permethrin can be effective, Ms. Leland suggested. “There are studies that show that just protecting your feet can do an amazing job against ticks because they tend to be low to the ground, so their entry point is that they often climb up on your shoes and keep going and get to your skin,” she said.
Mind where you’re going, and avoid areas that are especially attractive to ticks, like tall grassy fields, said Dr. Weber.
“Ticks don’t fly and they don’t jump,” Dr. Weber said. “They live on grasses, and when a human goes by, they leave the grass and attach themselves to the human.” He recommends staying in the center of a trail when walking in the woods and avoiding bushy areas and grasslands. Avoid sitting on downed logs, where ticks like to nestle, Ms. Leland said.
Use insect repellent on exposed skin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency recommend using mosquito repellents that have as their active ingredient either DEET; picaridin; IR3535; oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD); or 2-undecanone.
Only DEET, picaridin and IR3535 are effective agents against ticks, and will require higher concentrations than when used against mosquitoes, so read the package labels carefully and reapply as needed.
Adults should apply repellent to children, but not to very young infants, Dr. Weber said. Babies under 2 months should not use repellents and OLE and PMD should not be used on children under 3. For all children, avoid putting repellents on their hands, or near their eyes and mouths. If you’re also using sunscreen, apply the sunscreen first, and then the mosquito repellent afterward.
Check yourself for ticks after a hike. Take a shower after your hike and check yourself for ticks. Make sure to feel your scalp under your hair, and check folds of skin, your private parts, behind your ears and behind your knees.
Parents should check their children, and adults should have someone else check their backs.
“Look in your clothes for ticks,” Dr. Weber suggested, and throw them in the dryer on high heat if you’re concerned. “Do a full body check by looking in a mirror, and check hidden spots: behind the knees, the waist area, the bellybutton. That’s where they like to hide.”
Showering may wash away ticks that are riding on you, but if you find a tick that’s embedded in the skin, use pointy tweezers to remove it (you can get more detailed instructions online). “Grasp it and pull it straight out, slowly but firmly,” Ms. Leland advised.
And don’t forget to check your dogs when they come in from outside, taking care to protect yourself while you’re checking them. “Dogs, particularly those with long hair, can be a magnet for ticks,” Ms. Leland said.
Minimize exposure in your home and yard. Mosquitoes breed in fresh water and can reproduce in as little as a bottle cap full of water, so rid your yard and deck of empty flower pots, bird baths or bowls where water can accumulate. (If you keep a dog’s water bowl outside, empty and refresh it frequently).
Make sure your window screens are intact--”it doesn’t take a very big hole to let mosquitoes in,” Dr. Weber said. It’s best to use air-conditioning if you can, as mosquitoes are less active in cooler air.
Practice defensive gardening to make your yard inhospitable to ticks. Use fencing to keep out deer that carry ticks, prune trees, keep the grass cut short by mowing often (sorry!), clear leaves and remove overgrowth from the outdoor areas you use the most.
Another surprisingly easy low-tech way to protect yourself from mosquitoes is to set up an electric fan on a table near your seating area. The breeze it creates disperses the human scents that draw female mosquitoes, and mosquitoes have a hard time flying into the wind. The method is endorsed by the American Mosquito Control Association, a nonprofit group that publishes a journal.
And if you’re camping outdoors or don’t have screens on your windows, use mosquito nets around your bedding.
