The California sun, a gentle caress on the skin even in late afternoon, painted golden streaks across the cozy living room of Yn’s apartment. Outside, the distant murmur of Santa Monica promised a lively evening, but inside, the world felt hushed, intimate. Yn, perched on the edge of her plush sofa, phone clutched in her hand, felt a nervous flutter bloom in her chest. Her heart, usually a calm, steady drum, was now a hummingbird caught in a jar. Tonight was the night.

Across town, at a small, independent bookstore tucked away on a quieter street in Pasadena, Nicholas was shelving books. The scent of old paper and leather, his constant companion, always brought him a sense of peace. He hummed softly, a tuneless melody that mirrored the contentment simmering within him. Nicholas was a man who found joy in the small things – a well-brewed cup of coffee, the laughter of children playing in the park, the weight of a good book in his hands. Finn, with his easy smile and adventurous spirit, had captured her heart from the moment they’d met at a beach bonfire last summer. Their relationship had blossomed slowly, organically, like a flower unfurling its petals to the sun. He was kind, gentle, warm – all the things she cherished. And she loved him. Deeply.

Tonight was their six-month anniversary, a milestone Yn felt deserved more than just dinner and flowers. She wanted to express the profound depth of her feelings, the way he had painted her world in brighter colours, the quiet joy he had brought into her life.

Finn was currently at a friend’s bachelor party, a weekend camping trip in Yosemite. Cell service was spotty at best, which is why she opted for a text rather than a call. She knew he would check his phone eventually, find her message, and his heart would know exactly what she meant.

Meanwhile, in Pasadena, Nicholas's phone buzzed softly in his pocket. He paused in his shelving, pulling out his phone. A message from an unknown number. Curious, he opened it.

His eyes scanned the words, and a slow, almost disbelieving breath escaped his lips.

“My Dearest Love, As the sun sets on another day, and our six months together bathe in the golden light of California, my heart overflows with a love so profound, so complete, it takes my breath away. You are the gentle breeze that whispers through the palm trees, the warm sand between my toes, the endless blue of the Pacific sky. Every moment with you is a precious gem, each memory a star in the constellation of our love. You are my anchor, my safe harbor, the very essence of my happiness. I love you more than words can ever express, with a depth that reaches to the very core of my soul. Happy Anniversary, my love. Forever and always, Yn.”

Nicholas read it again, and then again. The words, so raw and vulnerable, so overflowing with genuine affection, resonated within him like a struck chord. He felt a strange ache in his chest, a yearning for the kind of love described in the message, a love that felt both passionate and peaceful, like a California sunset.

He didn’t know Yn. He didn't know who "Dearest Love" was. This was clearly a message meant for someone else. A wrong number. He knew he should just ignore it, delete it and move on. But he couldn’t. The sincerity in the words, the sheer outpouring of emotion, held him captive.

He looked around the quiet bookstore, the scent of aged paper suddenly feeling more poignant, more lonely. But perhaps lacking that spark, that deep, soul-stirring connection the text so eloquently described.

He hit send, a strange mix of emotions swirling within him. He felt a pang of sadness for the unknown “Dearest Love” who might not fully grasp the gift they were being given, and a quiet yearning for a love like that in his own life. But mostly, he felt a profound sense of… gratitude. Gratitude for the unexpected beauty that had landed in his world, even if it was by mistake.

Back in Santa Monica, Yn waited, a comfortable silence settling into her apartment. She checked her phone occasionally, but there was no reply from Finn. She wasn't worried. She knew he received it. He was probably just soaking it in, overwhelmed in the best possible way.

Then, her phone buzzed. Excitement bubbled within her. Finn! She quickly opened the message, her smile faltering as she read the name at the end: 'Nicholas.'

Confusion wrinkled her brow. Nicholas? She didn't know any Nicholas. She reread the message, her heart sinking with each word. ‘Wrong number.’ ‘Beautiful and moving.’ ‘Touched my heart.’

A wave of mortification washed over her. Oh no. She had sent that message to a complete stranger. Her cheeks flushed crimson. She quickly checked the number she had sent it to. One digit was off. A single, devastatingly wrong digit.

Panic surged through her. She had poured her soul out to… Nicholas. A stranger named Nicholas. What must he think of her? How mortifying!

But as the initial wave of embarrassment subsided, a different emotion began to surface. Curiosity. Nicholas’s reply was… surprisingly kind. He hadn't mocked her, hadn't been creepy. He had simply acknowledged the message, appreciated its sincerity, and wished her well. There was a gentle warmth in his words, a kindness that echoed the very qualities she had described in her message to Finn.

Hesitantly, Yn typed a reply.

“Nicholas, Oh my gosh! I am SO incredibly mortified! Please forgive me. That message was meant for my boyfriend, Finn. I accidentally sent it to the wrong number. I’m so, so sorry to have bothered you with my… overly emotional anniversary text.” She added a flushed-face emoji, hoping to convey her genuine embarrassment.

Within moments, Nicholas replied.

“No bother at all, Yn. Please don’t be mortified. It was truly a lovely message. And honestly, in a world that often feels quite… cynical, it was refreshing to read such genuine affection. No apology necessary. I hope Finn is having a wonderful bachelor party and that you both have a very happy anniversary.”

Yn reread his message, a small smile returning to her lips. He was being so gracious, so understanding. And there was something… charming about his writing style, something that resonated with her own gentle nature.

Emboldened, she decided to push the boundaries just a little.

“Thank you, Nicholas. That’s incredibly kind of you to say. Though I still feel like I’ve just accidentally serenaded a stranger with my love life. Out of curiosity, what do you do, Nicholas? You seem like a very… thoughtful person.”

Nicholas chuckled softly to himself as he read Yn’s message, the ‘serenaded a stranger’ comment bringing a genuine smile to his face. He typed back, his heart feeling inexplicably lighter than it had in hours.

“I work at a bookstore in Pasadena. Surrounded by stories, both real and imagined. Perhaps that’s why I appreciate sincerity when I encounter it. And you, Yn? Besides writing incredibly moving love confessions, what is it that you do?”

And so began an unexpected conversation, born from a mistaken text message and a shared appreciation for kindness and genuine emotion. Over the next few days, Yn and Nicholas traded messages, discovering a surprising amount of common ground. They talked about books and movies, their favorite coffee shops in California, their dreams and aspirations. They found themselves drawn to each other's gentle spirits, their shared warmth and understanding.

Yn still adored Finn, and her anniversary weekend with him, once he returned, was lovely. But a small, quiet corner of her heart had been unexpectedly touched by Nicholas. And Nicholas, in his quiet bookstore in Pasadena, found himself checking his phone more often, a hopeful anticipation fluttering in his chest, waiting for a message from a number he hadn't recognized just days ago, a number that had, quite by accident, illuminated his world with a spark of unexpected, gentle light. The California sun, it seemed, could bring warmth in the most unexpected ways.

Happy 75th Birthday singer John Paul Young, born June 21st 1950.

Young was born John Inglis Young in Bridgeton, Glasgow, but age 11 his parents James and Agnes emigrated to Australia on board the SS Canberra where he quickly learned to imitate the local accent to avoid being teased by his classmates.

It was with this newly learned voice that he started singing, joining a production of Jesus Christ Superstar and becoming the lead singer for rock band Elm Tree in the 1970s. During one of their performances he was spotted by manager and sometimes-producer Simon Napier-Bell, who asked him to record an overdub for a song called "Pasadena." That song was written by Harry Vanda and George Young of the Easybeats, who were impressed enough with him to become John Paul Young's songwriters, penning a string of pop songs that gave him chart success in Australia as well as Europe and Asia.

t wasn't until the late '70s that he became world-famous, first for the disco song "Standing in the Rain," and then for the biggest hit of his career, "Love Is in the Air." John Paul Young attributed the song's success to the direction of George Young, who had told him to make the song casual by singing it as if it were a conversation. Subsequent singles either unsuccessfully attempted to re-create the disco formula of "Standing in the Rain" or turned towards rock, which gave him several more hits within Australia in the early '80s. Young eventually retired from singing to become a radio DJ, but came out of retirement in 1992 when a version of "Love Is in the Air" was used on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's film Strictly Ballroom and the song became a hit once again. After performing his old hits at live concerts for another decade, including a performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he returned to the studio with Harry Vanda's Flashpoint Music in 2006 to record a new album, In Too Deep.

Young is arguably more well known in his adopted homeland and has appeared in many shows over there including their version of Strictly Come Dancing called Dancing with the stars. 2009, Young was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame and Australia awarded him with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the performing arts as a singer and songwriter, and through support for a range of charitable organisations.

For many years, Young has supported children's charities, he is also an avid environmentalist, supporting Landcare projects in his local community. Last year he appeared at The 2019 Sydney Royal Edinburgh, a touring version of the show from the capital city.

In 2022, he released his first new song in 15 years, "Felt Like Love", and performed nationally on his anniversary tour 50 Years Young. Unfortunately e was forced to cancel much of the tour due to ongoing health issues.

ALTADENA, California (Los Angeles Times) – For some, Altadena’s draw has been the seclusion it offers, nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, straddling the line between urban and wild. For others, it’s been the community where Black residents sought refuge decades ago amid the legacy of defunct racial redlining. And then there has always been Altadena’s sense of freedom and creativity that gave rise to an artists’ enclave and The Bunny Museum.

Whatever drew them, this unincorporated town north of Pasadena represented an alluring, magical combination of solitude and community for more than 42,000 residents, many whose families had lived there for generations in an eclectic mix of homes — from streets lined with small bungalow homes and neighborhoods of sprawling Spanish style and Colonial mansions amid graceful oaks.

Here, affordable home prices made ownership a reality. Neighbors checked in if they noticed a light on late. Full-moon parties were anticipated celebrations. Dozens jogged together on Tuesdays and Thursdays as part of a running group formed during the pandemic. In winter, residents visited Christmas Tree Lane, marveling at the lighted, drooping branches of the deodar cedar trees. The town council balanced progress with ensuring that gentrification wouldn’t force out long-time Altadenans.

But on Tuesday, the Eaton fire cut a brutal swath through the town, burning more than 1,000 structures and killing at least five residents. A cherished way of life is upended and residents are reeling in sadness. Old Altadena is gone and residents are left wondering: Can the remade town retain its soul?

NOTE: Altadena is an unincorporated community (by choice, in response to several attempts by neighboring Pasadena to annex them). They don't have a city government that provides services; services are provided by Los Angeles County and the LA County Board of Supervisors.

Eaton Fire Leaves California Landscape Charred

On the afternoon of January 11, 2025, NASA’s AVIRIS-3 (Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-3) flew aboard a B200 aircraft over Los Angeles County, where it captured images of several areas affected by wildland fires.

These false-color images show areas burned by the Eaton fire in Altadena and parts of Pasadena, Arcadia, and Sierra Madre. Charred trees and buildings in developed areas appear dark brown, whereas the burned wildland areas, particularly in Angeles National Forest, are shades of orange.

The Eaton fire ignited in the hills of Eaton Canyon, near Altadena, on the evening of January 7. By 10:30 a.m. the next day, the fire had quickly grown to cover more than 10,000 acres (40 square kilometers), according to Cal Fire. Around the time of this image on January 11, it had expanded to 14,117 acres (57 square kilometers), and the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported it was about 15 percent contained.

The AVIRIS-3 optical sensor collects data in 286 bands in the electromagnetic spectrum, ranging from visible violet light at a wavelength of 380 nanometers to shortwave infrared at 2,500 nanometers. In the past, AVIRIS images have been useful for investigating fire behavior and the effects of fire emissions. They are also used for post-fire analyses, such as fire severity, area burned, soil erosion, and other environmental change.

“In addition to assisting with damage assessments, these data may help us understand the chemical composition and toxic nature of ash in the post-fire environment and how it redistributes over time via wind and water flows, with subsequent data acquisitions,” said Michael Falkowski, manager of NASA’s wildland fire program.

As of the morning of January 15, the Eaton fire had stopped expanding, and it was 45 percent contained. Preliminary estimates indicate that thousands of structures were destroyed, according to Cal Fire.

NASA’s Disasters Response Coordination System has been activated to support agencies responding to the fires, including the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. Response activities are centered on two primary requests from the local emergency managers: damage assessment information on built infrastructure, and impacts of air quality and human health risks. The team will be posting maps and data products on its open-access mapping portal as new information becomes available.

The Meaning of Atonement

On September 20, 1980 the late Pastor General Herbert W. Armstrong (Herbert W. Armstrong) gave a sermon titled 'The Meaning of Atonement' in Pasadena, California. This message was updated with additional scriptures, modifications, and various points in 2024 by Dr. Thiel. Why do two holy days picture the death of Jesus? Is there an application of the Passover for the church age and Atonement for the age to come? Is part of the meaning of the Day of Atonement to show that Satan has a part in our sins and will be driven out? Did Lucifer reject God's way of giving love to his way of selfishness, vanity, and disobedience? Is there more to education that going to grade school or college? Is God a family? Why is there sex?
