Views of Hew Locke’s monumental opus, The Procession. The work is installed at the Tate Britain. Every single element is imbued with the history, anguish, joy and spectacle of the Caribbean. If you’re lucky enough to be able to see it, put aside a few of hours to take it all in. @hewdjlocke @tate

Talkin Meh Talk Wednesday 26th May 2021 @ 7-9pm (uk) **online** Panellists: Kadija (Sesay) George & Feat. Cyndi Celeste & Alim Kamara Registration for a free ticket here: https://talkin-meh-talk.eventbrite.co.uk How we speak is more than what we mean: ‘talk’, accent & the words we use are all part of who we are. In this way, our words set us free to be who we are & language literally has the power to shape our reality. John Agard’s poem Everytime I talk meh talk challenges the notion that his way of speaking English is inferior, non standard, labelled “Pidgin” & “broken”. Agard makes the connection between how he speaks & who he is; if how he speaks is “broken” then, must he also be broken? This event brings together artists & activists to consider labels such as broken, Pidgin, Creole, Patios and dialect & how they are used to drive the idea that there is one correct way of speaking English & other European languages. ‘If they’re publishing books by us then they definitely need to be employing us’. The publishing house of Guyanese-born activists & publishers Jessica and Eric Huntley was decolonising the publishing world 50 years ago, yet we are #stilldecolonisingpublishinguk. Through poetry performances & an open conversation, participants consider how we can decolonise the mainly white privileged publishing world, recognising that the process of undoing colonising practices requires a change in who decides whose stories & whose words have the most value. This is a live event and it won’t be subtitled as standard. If you wish to attend and have an accessibility requirement then please do email [email protected] in advance. This event series is focused on the archives of Jessica and Eric Huntley & is part of long-term & sustained work taking place at LMA to share Black British history through work with schools, community groups & with the general public. I am a huge fan. I saw his work a few years ago and did my best to take some  discrete pictures in the gallery.
