#UEFA Women's Euro 2017
Note
Lieke Martens will play her last international games next break vs Finland. She was always special but her run in EUROS 2017 (sorry Pernille Harder I also love you!) and WC 2019 damn, you can only think what if she did things differently.
Either way, uefa women's player of the year 2017, top nominee of ballon d'or deserves a great send off
Tumblr media
lieke will be one of the biggest what ifs. it's interesting what happened to her career post-barça but c'est la vie! unfortunately, a lot of our ex-players have not been able to replicate that same level of success when they leave the club.
but she's had a great international career, won the euros, and came second at the world cup, so that's a solid achievement for lieke.

The European Women's Championship appears to be missing from the UEFA website. I only notice brief (5-minute) cuts. Where can I watch the soccer matches from the 2017 and 2022 European Women's Championships?

From the danish podcast "bag om trøjen" with Pernille Harder an Katrine Veje
I have finally listed to the whole podcast, and have tried to translate most of the podcast, not word by word, but just overall what they said, I know it's a bit long 😅
It was recorded back in February
The things in this color is the best parts (at least what I think)
instagram
Talking about club
03:52 - It's only in Denmark I'm called Harder, everywhere else I'm called P
04:20 - How much do the shirts mean for you Veje?
explains that she only wants to switch her NT jersey with "bigger" teams and not teams like Azerbaijan and Malta. They mean a lot to her. But she never says no.
10:30 - Pernille picks up Veje's Arsenal shirt "ew, I don't think I can do this"
05:20 How much do the shirts mean for you Pernille?
- "My shirts, or the one I swap to"
- They all bring up some good memories.
- It's often in the final rounds that I switch as there are some of the "better" teams
- The one I'm probably the happiest about is Marta da Silva, I think it was in 2012, she also wears number 10. She is one of my biggest idols as a kid.
17:45 - Talking about the FA Cup on 5 December 2021 winning over Veje
13:30 - How was your start in Chelsea
- There was a big pressure as I was the most expensive player and just was named UEFA player of the year, but I think it was pretty well
Talking about worst/toughest player
19:20 - Pernille is asked first, the host and Veje think she's thinking about Troelsgaard as she says it's a teammate, but then she says it's Millie Bright.
- She's just going 100 percent in the tackles no matter if she gets the ball or not. She trains like she plays games. So sometimes you get to feel what she’s capable of
Katrines time in Montpellier
20:10 - Veje is next
- Troelsgaard must be the thought, she also trains as the play's games but has become better over the years
Listeners questions
21:30 - Before we went to the euro's 2017 i signed with Montpellier. I had a good start, played well and came on the world's top 100 list. Then there is a meeting just after the summer where she is told that some English clubs are interested in her and then the club starts not to treat her well.
- At a time, she trained with the U19 team, which was low, she felt it was kind of a punishment.
- Today when she's thinking bad, she still has good memories and good friends. It's not only bad things, but of course they still are there.
- She remembers a friendly against Barcelona where she starts out, then come on the field to play 12 minutes and was taken out again
- She learned a lot in that time and how to handle it. It was a tough time mentally and she considered stopping her career as it wasn't fun at all.
- At the U19 team, she was in the matchday squad, bet then they just take her shirt in front of her and put it back in the bag.
- (Harder interrupts) I don't know how they can treat people like that, it's inhuman, just because they heard she might be interested in moving on in her career to a new club
28:00 - Which shirt would be the biggest to swap to
- Pernille: It's hard to say, in the club we don't have shirts to swap them away, we mostly only have one. But I have the one I want the most.
- 28:55 - I swapped once with Megan Rapinoe and that is the one, I'm the happiest about
Talking early days/debuts with the NT
29:40 - What is it like to experience the development women's football is undergoing
- Pernille, there has happened so much in the last five years, people have started to be more interested and especially the TV streams have become a lot better, in the past, the matches were only filmed with a hand-held camera from one angle and then it is clear that people found it boring to watch women's football. It is something that has irritated me a lot. So, I'm happy that, that part is becoming better.
32:35 - Do you remember your debuts
- Pernille, I think it was a good game to have a debut against, I scored a hat trick and there also was another debutant who did that as well
33:50 - Talking about shirt numbers at NT
33:20 - Pernille
- I played Right back in a pretty important Worldcup playoff match against Switzerland (host: how did what go) well I was put as an attacking midfielder in the second half, I think that says it all about my performance 😂 and i have never played back since
Euros 2017
36:20 Veje had a chance where she was totally alone in front of the goal, without the goalkeeper. She then shot over the goal, and one of the teammates just yells "what the h*ll are you doing"
24:30 - The semifinal was postponed
- Veje, when we were warming up the ball didn't move at all, we have to chip the ball to each other.
- We went down to the changing room and our clothes got tumble-dried, at this time the game wasn't postponed to the day after yet, just a later kickoff.
- Pernille, when we were waiting for the game to start, I remember talking to a club teammate and the game was still not postponed
- Then we go out and warm up for a second time and after that warmup, we were told that the game had been moved to the day after, and I just thought "okay, then let's just go home and sleep" 😂
38:00 - Because of the later kickoff Denmark had packed their bags beforehand, and Germany hadn't
40:30 - After the tournament, my girlfriend and I went on vacation, I was mentally and physically exhausted and she told me I was the most boring to be on vacation with, we didn't do anything, and I just walked around in my own thoughts
38:30 - The final
- Pernille, the final was a special feeling. We were all exhausted, but still proud of what we had achieved
42:22 - Snoring
- Sofie Junge snores and we were roomies under the euro's 2017
- Pernille also sleeps with earplugs at home because Magda snores and takes very deep breaths, and it annoys her too much to not have them in. I think I have become addicted to them when I sleep alone today, I still sleep with earplugs

Where’s the interview Viv did? Is it all in Dutch or is it in English? I don’t speak/read Dutch so wanted to throw that out there before anyone goes looking for a link lol Can you elaborate on why the team isn’t good now? Very recently they were good, or maybe I feel like their winning Euros year and silver medal at the Olympics was more recent than it was?
Its in the UEFA's Equals series. Everyone has been posting the links.
We have been shit since 2017 but the dutch (both men and women) have an inherent talent for playing like shit but dragging their better opponents down with em to their level 2 out of 3 times. Its a tactic that just requires some luck!

Women's soccer in the Middle East
Why since the creation of the women's FIFA world cup, we haven't had any Middle East countries? After eight editions featuring multiples teams from around the world, why are we lacking a team from this region? Sadly, it's not like Asia was a bad continent for soccer either, as numerous countries have mad the World Cup, China being host twice! Only a very few countries from that region reach the Asian World Cup!
The main problem is the way the education is done around sports for girls, and not only regarding sports as a matter of fact. We have two many examples in these countries of little girls that are told by their father or authority figure that they are a girl and that it's not right for them to play.
The awareness of women's right is just simply not at the same level in these countries, leading them to be late on many issues regarding women, with obviously sports coming in last. That is why women were not even allowed to be in a stadium in Saudi Arabia until 2017.
One of the other main problem is that countries are not investing enough money to provide opportunities to women to shine and earn profit, thinking that they would be a "luxury" to have. However, as we saw with the recent UEFA Women's Euro 2022, women can bring money and fill stadium, as the crowd in the final broke the record of attendance in all Europe, men included. Moreover, as recent countries such as Qatar recently host the World Cup, it's not like they were in financial difficulty.
Fortunately, we are heading in the right direction slowly, as Jordan women's team is shining recently, having won several regional tournaments and completing some at the international level. Currently ranked 68 in the FIFA women's ranking, they are slowly getting better along with countries such as Iran and Turkey. Jordan also hosted the FIFA under 17 World Cup in 2016, which is the subject of one of our TikTok posts of the week! You can see it below.
The UAE is also shining, as they won the West Asia Football Federation Women's Championship in 2010 and 2011 and their Football Association provided various funds for national team programs.

this is cute ☺️
ann-Katrin Berger met Jess Carter when she joined Birmingham City FC in May 2016. Despite being teammates, they didn’t speak much during the first six months. “At the beginning, I thought she was arrogant, but as I got to know her, I found myself really drawn into her character,” says Ann-Katrin.
At the time, Jess was living at home with her family in Barford, Warwickshire, but was keen to spread her wings. “By 2017 I wanted to move out, and found out that Ann was looking for a housemate,” says Jess. “In February, we moved in together in Solihull.” They quickly became great friends, sharing their passion for football and films. “Jess was chilled and there was no drama at all,” says Ann-Katrin. “We like all the same TV shows, so there’s never any fighting over the remote.”
Although they built a strong friendship, Jess hadn’t considered the possibility that there could be more. “I had broken up with my boyfriend when I moved in, but as far as I knew I was straight,” she says. That summer, Jess went away for training, and the pair missed each other’s company. “She’s a naturally flirty person, which is the opposite of me,” says Ann-Katrin. Wondering if it could mean she was interested in something more than friendship, Ann-Katrin planned a night out for them when she returned. “A friend encouraged me and I thought, if I didn’t try, I might not get other chances.”
In August 2017, Ann-Katrin took Jess out for the dinner date she had planned, but Jess had no idea it was meant to be romantic. “When she used the word ‘date’, I thought she meant as friends. Even when she paid, it didn’t click, because she’s one of the most generous people I know.”
Mutual friends asked Jess how the evening went, but she still didn’t think romance was on the cards. “Ann-Katrin has all the qualities I’d look for in a partner, but I’d never dated a woman before, so I hadn’t really thought about it like that,” she says.
A few days later, they were relaxing at home when Ann-Katrin took a risk and initiated a kiss. “I was quite nervous because I didn’t know what her reaction would be. I always knew she was quite an open person, and she’d never ruled out being with a woman. At the same time, I heard her talk about guys, so I wasn’t sure.”
nitially, they didn’t speak about the kiss, but when it happened again a few days later, they had a frank discussion.
“I definitely sensed something was shifting, but it wasn’t until we kissed that I really thought about things in a different way,” says Jess. “Ann is not a serial dater, she needs to be emotionally invested. So for her to kiss me was a big thing. I cared about her so much as a friend, but I wasn’t clear on romantic feelings at the start.” She told Ann-Katrin that she wanted to give things a go, but couldn’t commit quickly. “I wasn’t sure if it was a phase for me, and didn’t want to lead her on,” she says.
Ann-Katrin may have been more certain about her feelings at first, but Jess quickly caught up. “It developed really quickly and naturally after that,” she says, and within months they had told each other “I love you”.
Not long after they became a couple, Ann-Katrin underwent treatment for thyroid cancer. “I was scared it would be too much for Jess, but she was so supportive,” she says. In June 2018, Jess moved to London to play for Chelsea. Ann Katrin joined the club in early 2019, and the pair now live together in London. When sport was paused during the lockdown, Jess says Ann-Katrin motivated her to carry on training: “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without Ann.”
In this year’s Uefa Women’s Euros, both women were in their team’s squad for the final – Jess for England and Ann-Katrin for Germany. “There wasn’t really any direct competition because we are both really chilled people,” says Jess. Ann-Katrin agrees: “I’m happy for her success.”
