Some period pants sold by high street retailers contain high levels of silver that could have health and environmental implications for consumers, an investigation has found.
Silver is used as an antimicrobial agent and is typically added to period pants to combat user concerns about smell and hygiene.
However, scientists have increasingly warned about the potential health effects. The US Food and Drug Administration found that nanosilver can kill lactobacillus, the healthy bacteria in the vagina that help fight off infection. This can put period pant users more at risk of harmful bacteria, potentially leading to an increased risk of bacterial infections and pregnancy complications.
Natalie Hitchins, the head of home products and services at Which?, said: “Consumers should be cautious buying period pants which contain silver as experts have concerns about the health implications.
“Which? believes brands should also clearly state which products contain silver so shoppers can make informed decisions about what they are buying and the possible risks.”
The consumer rights group worked with an Italian consumer organisation, Altroconsumo, to independently test popular brands and check if they contained any chemicals of concern. They were worried to find that some products contained significant levels of silver, and this was not always made clear on the packaging.
Intima by Bodyform and pants by Marks & Spencer in particular contained notably more silver than other brands, at 126.7mg/kg and 57.8mg/kg respectively. Other brands contained 8.3mg/kg, 7.4mg/kg, and 0.9mg/kg.
Essity, the owner of Bodyform and Modibodi, said silver copper zeolite was used to “prevent odour when wearing the pants for up to 12 hours”. It added that all of its “washable underwear is certified according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which means that every single component has been tested for harmful substances” and “that the underwear has been designated as harmless for human health”. An M&S Spokesperson said: “We do not use either nano silver or silver zeolite and, like many brands, use a small amount of silver chloride in the middle part of the gusset – away from the skin – which is perfectly safe, approved by the UK and EU, and designed to combat odour.”
Which? said it believed the use of silver was unnecessary and that previous testing by Altroconsumo had shown that textile items treated in this way did not have the promised antimicrobial properties.
The European Chemicals Agency says silver treatments, such as nanosilver and silver zeolite, are toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
The tests Which? carried out can detect any silver above 0.1mg/kg, and it found none in Primark, Repeat, Wuka, Lovable and Sloggi pants. Sloggi’s website says it does use a silver-based antimicrobial, and Primark says it uses Micro-Fresh, which contains silver chloride.
A Primark spokesperson said: “The nature of period pants means there is a potential for odour to develop during wear (in the same way that bacteria can cause socks and shoes to develop odours during wear) and our antimicrobial finish minimises such odours.”
Sloggi did not reply to Which? at the time of publication.
There are no legal limits in the UK about how much silver can be added to period pants. Manufacturers do not have to declare the presence of silver on their packaging or website.

English Language as a Narrative Trope in BL
Tumblr media
Just a quick note to say that in many Asian dramas (not just BL) a character speaking English is an intentional characterization trait.
In some cases it indicates a level of modernity and a kind of “punk ass” attitude (see a lot of early Kdramas, and Perth’s character in Cutie Pie).
Tumblr media
In others it indicates allegiances to a non-standard individualistic mentality or propensity to selfishness and evil (see this EXCELLENT post on English being weaponized in KinnPorsche).
Tumblr media
In some cases it has to do with a character’s demonstration of class and education (AKA wealth and acquired intelligence). Also being world traveled etc.. You see this applied to the wealthy CEO archetype a lot (also often depicted eating western food).
In others, the actor already speaks English and the show runners just want to show this off. (Everything is not always narratively intentional in the film industry, sorry.)
Sometimes they just fucking with us.
For chronic BL watchers, English in use in Taiwanese BL and Pinoy BL is materially different than the above, and much less innately suspicious (and applied with much less narrative/character intent). This should be obvious given both countries’ histories and relationships with English.
Finally, Japan rarely if ever uses English in this way (if at all).
As I run across good examples of all of this, I’ll try to remember to update this post.
Note: English words and terms borrowed into a language and then applied organically as part of a sentence are different, especially in the queer communities. For example, Korean dramas often use the English word kiss specially to mean romantic lip-to-lip (see Semantic Error), and the word gay is very loaded in many BLs. Discussion of that here.
Follow up
Tumblr media
puttha-sumettikul asked:
In Ghost Host Ghost House, Kawin asks Pluem to use "I" and "you" and they have the most adorable little negotiation/settling in conversation around it. It made me so happy and I don't know why. What are your thoughts on BL utilising English particles like this? Has it been done before? What kind of weight does it hold for the characters and their relationship?
Characters talking in English always has some kind of significance in a BL. Although Kewin having lived in the United States does make a difference in this particular instance.
Use of English always tends to indicate a certain amount of modernity and youthful connection. Because it often requires higher education, speaking English can have class and money implications. I think that Cake’s use of English in the sex scene in My Only 12% is saying something along these lines.
Tumblr media
Also the way that this show makes a point of highlighting Cake’s American friends being supportive about his relationship when Cake comes out on Facebook.
In BL from Korea it can imply characterization: a more punk-ass, overly independant and aggressive nature.
In a place like Taiwan however, everyone under a certain age is expected to have some grasp of English, so it's more simply established unless it’s used A LOT. The bartender’s use of English all the time in My Tooth Your Love clearly is somewhat more significant than normal for Taiwan.
Tumblr media
With Kawin asks Pluem in Ghost Host, Ghost House I think part of the implication is that Kawin would like them to be more queer or gay in the global understanding of such terms than they are as a couple under the tie restrictions of Thailand’s formality of language. (He’s also younger so he wants to age up as equals in the relationship.)
The switch to and use of American pronouns instead of Thai ones, carries a ton of weight in terms of an implied equal footing within the relationship and moving away from age restrictions and age dynamics.
This, in turn, allows Kawin more freedom and agency in terms of their sex scenes. As the implied uke this narrative, he should be more blushing maiden and les proactive and interested in sex. But this narrative just allows him to be himself about the whole situation, and I think in part this negotiation was to give him a certain level of intimacy and autonomy as an agent in his own sexual destiny.
Their using English pronouns to bypass a socially establish pattern of behavior that has been imposed by the pre-existing history of the culture around those pronouns. As such it says A LOT about how these two see each other and their relationship (as equals, but also as modern representative of gayness).

Tests have revealed chocolate bars that left customers ill at a Christmas market in Mansfield contained traces of hallucinogenic drugs, police have confirmed.
Nottinghamshire Police launched an investigation after people fell ill after eating chocolate sold at a market stall in Mansfield last week.
The chocolate was sold in gold wrappers and orange Cali-Gold boxes last Saturday.
In an update, police confirmed the quantities of Psilocin and THC – a substance found in cannabis - were found in a small number of the chocolate bars.
A 10-year-old boy was among those taken to the hospital, but police confirmed all those who became unwell have now fully recovered.
A 63-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of administering a noxious substance and has been released on bail.
Chief Inspector Chris Sutcliffe, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “An investigation is in the process of being carried out after multiple people reported falling ill after consuming chocolate purchased in Mansfield last weekend.
“Forensic testing has been carried out of the chocolate recovered by police, with the majority showing no traces of drugs or anything out of the ordinary.
“Quantities of the hallucinogenic drug Psilocin and THC – a substance found in cannabis – were discovered in a small number of the bars, however.
“It is really important that anyone who still has any of this chocolate hands it into the police immediately so that it can be further analysed.”
“A 63-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of administering a noxious substance and is currently assisting police with our ongoing inquiries after being released on bail.
Tina Potter, Head of Incidents, Food Standards Agency said: “We are working with local authorities, the UK Health Security Agency and Nottinghamshire Police to investigate an incident following reports of illness after eating chocolate bought from Mansfield Market in Nottinghamshire.
“The chocolate was both labelled as ‘Cali-Gold’ and unbranded.
“If you have purchased chocolate matching this description, it should not be consumed but instead handed in to the police.
“If you have already eaten it and have developed symptoms, then you should urgently seek medical attention from your GP, or contact NHS 111 online or phone 111.”

The Ukraine war has taken sunflower oil off the market, leading the Food Standards Agency (UK) to allow manufacturers to replace it with other refined or fully refined food grade vegetable oils despite still being labeled as sunflower oil. Including the use of SOYBEAN oil as a substitute.
You know. Top 8 allergen soy.
There’s obviously fear that this will happen in the US as well, which, as someone living in the US who is severely allergic to soy, is terrifying.
Emily Miles, chief executive of the FSA said:
"It is an absolute priority for us that food is safe, and what it says it is. If industry decisions are made around the substitutions of these oils, we expect accurate labels to be prepared and printed as soon as possible so that consumers can be confident in the food they buy. Any inaccuracies in labelling must only be temporary. We are working closely with industry to raise awareness among consumers of any potential changes to ingredients.
“We have carried out a rapid risk assessment on three fully refined oils that the food industry is proposing to use in a variety of products to replace sunflower oil, supplies of which are being restricted by the war in Ukraine. The risk assessment focuses on people with a food allergy, and the immediate food risk from fully refined palm oil and fully refined coconut oil is very low and for fully refined soybean oil it is negligible, which means that allergic reactions to these fully refined vegetable oils are very rare and - if they do occur - are mild.”
We encourage industry to consider using the healthier and more sustainable oils from this list if substituting their ingredients. Consumers should contact the manufacturer or brand for more information if they are unsure of the content of any product or have concerns about substitution.”
You hear that? People with food allergies are a negligible risk.
It’s a common lie that soybean oil reactions are only ever mild. There’s an entire soy allergy board on Facebook filled with people who either are allergic to soy, or are a caretaker for someone with a soy allergy who would back me up saying these reactions can be severe, and even mild allergic reactions are still allergic reactions and shouldnt be written off so easily...
I just don’t know what to say. This is so messed up and the irony of this happening days before Food Allergy Awareness Month sure is something.
I’m stressed and have nothing good to say. Good luck to anyone this might affect.

“Ukraine’s state energy operator has warned that there is a risk of a radioactive leak at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.
Moscow’s troops have “repeatedly shelled” the site of the nuclear plant over the past day, Energoatom said.
As of midday on Saturday local time (9am GMT) the plant “operates with the risk of violating radiation and fire safety standards”, the operator said in a statement.
Energoatom said:
As a result of periodic shelling, the infrastructure of the station has been damaged, there are risks of hydrogen leakage and sputtering of radioactive substances, and the fire hazard is high.
Russia’s defence ministry has claimed Ukraine’s troops “shelled the territory of the station three times” in the past day.”-via The Guardian

“Moscow and Kyiv traded fresh accusations on Saturday of shelling around the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which has been a focus of international concern that fighting in the area could trigger a disaster.
Zaporizhzhia, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, has been controlled by Russian forces since early March, soon after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Ukrainian staff continue to operate it and in recent weeks the two sides have traded blame for shelling near the plant.
Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom energy agency said Russian troops again shelled the grounds of the plant complex in the last 24 hours.
"The damage is currently being ascertained," Energoatom wrote in a statement on Telegram.
Moscow's defence ministry accused Ukrainian forces of shelling the plant complex three times in the last 24 hours.
Reuters could not verify the battlefield report.”-via Reuters

“British defence ministry’s announcemed that it is donating undersea minehunter drones to help Ukraine clear its coastline.
Six autonomous minehunting vehicles will be sent to the country to help detect Russian mines in the waters off its coast, the ministry said.
Three of these drones will be provided from the UK’s own stocks, with a further three to be purchased from industry.
In addition, dozens of Ukrainian navy personnel will be taught to use the drones over the coming months, the ministry said. The first tranche have already begun their training, it added.
Britain’s defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said in a statement:
Russia’s cynical attempts to hold the world’s food supply to ransom must not be allowed to succeed.
This vital equipment and training will help Ukraine make their waters safe, helping to smooth the flow of grain to the rest of the world and supporting the armed forces of Ukraine as they look to defend their coastline and ports.”-via The Guardian

5 Steps Towards Creating An Impactful Pop-Up Restaurant - Sophie Wright Catering
The fast popularisation in recent years of the pop-up restaurant format really shouldn’t be a surprise. In an era in which there is so much debate about how we can retain the vibrancy of our town centres, pop-up eateries can play a big role in bringing a (quite literal) freshness to what might otherwise seem unlikely spaces.
A pop-up restaurant could make a lot of sense from the perspective of someone who is considering starting one, too. Pop-ups aren’t associated with the same heavy overheads as more permanent eateries, and they offer a lot of flexibility in terms of location. They can even enable you to more tentatively start running a restaurant business, without the level of commitment that a longer-term presence would represent.
Even better, if you make all the right moves, a pop-up restaurant business could even generate a worthwhile income for you. So, here are several key steps to take to help maximise your restaurant business’s chances of success.
Determine a style, name, and theme for your restaurant
Your answers to these questions will guide so many of the other decisions you make on your pop-up restaurant – so, don’t be afraid to start jotting down ideas, to see where your imagination takes you.
You should be confident in your pop-up restaurant having a concept that will genuinely fire the imaginations of passers-by. After all, this will greatly impact on the theme of your restaurant, and the exact dishes that you serve to customers.
Put together a business plan
Any business really requires a business plan. It is a document that will set out the structure and approach of your business, serving as a guide for you, and a showcase to potential investors, sponsors, and lenders of your business as an attractive and viable concern.
Find the most suitable location
The location will be one of the most critical factors in the success or failure of your pop-up restaurant. So, it shouldn’t be a shock for you to learn that finding an appropriate location can be one of the most challenging aspects of launching this type of business.
It might seem obvious to simply suggest you establish your business in a location with plentiful footfall. But it is also important to consider that a pop-up restaurant set in an outdoor location, for instance, will offer a markedly different experience to one based inside an existing indoor venue.
For these reasons, you will need to give careful thought to the matter of location – including the ‘vibe’ to which you aspire for your restaurant, and how you will obtain permission to use your favoured space.
Secure the necessary licences, permits, and insurance
There will almost certainly be some formalities you need to go through, if you are to set up your pop-up restaurant in the space you have picked out as the optimum one.
You can expect to need to obtain a business licence, food service permit, and relevant insurance. The Food Standards Agency provides further information on registering a food business in the UK.
Start assembling a compelling menu
The food itself will naturally always be ‘the star’ of your pop-up restaurant. And if you have reached this stage of the realisation of your eatery, you will hopefully have a good idea of its gastronomic direction.
If, however, there is still some lingering uncertainty in your head as to what kind of menu your pop-up restaurant will have, you will need to ask yourself some tough questions. Those could include in relation to where your ingredients will be sourced from, and to what extent you might specialise, such as by only focusing on brunch, rather than breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

**North America's Contribution:**
North America is anticipated to contribute 41% to the global market growth throughout the forecast period. Analysts at Technavio have provided detailed explanations of regional trends and drivers shaping the PCR system market during this period.
**Factors Driving Growth in North America:**
The presence of numerous regulatory organizations in the US and Canada positions these countries as significant revenue contributors. Food and beverage companies operating in these regions are compelled to adhere to stringent standards to ensure the continuous marketing of their products. In Canada, Health Canada oversees the activities of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, emphasizing safety measures. Additionally, the country employs six independent surveillance systems to estimate the prevalence of foodborne illnesses, indicating the establishment of a rigorous regulatory framework.
Furthermore, the North American food and beverage industry is experiencing growth primarily due to the emergence of genetically modified (GM) foods. This trend is expected to fuel high market growth in North America during the forecast period.
**Market Dynamics:**
**Key Drivers:**
The notable surge in foodborne illnesses is a significant driver propelling market growth. The meals consumed by individuals typically consist of both plant-based and animal-based components, which may harbor various types of microorganisms. Throughout food production and consumption processes, there's a risk of natural source microbes contaminating food. For instance, raw meat can be contaminated during animal slaughter, while fruits and vegetables may encounter contamination during growth or processing stages. Such food contamination leads to spoilage and, when consumed, results in foodborne illnesses.
Globally, foodborne illnesses pose serious public health concerns. Approximately 48 million individuals fall ill due to these illnesses annually, with around 128,000 hospitalizations and approximately 3,000 deaths reported each year. PCR diagnostic systems play a crucial role in identifying microorganisms or human pathogens like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. Consequently, the escalating occurrence of illnesses is expected to drive market growth during the forecast period.
**Significant Trends:**
A noteworthy trend shaping market growth is the increasing consumer awareness regarding food safety. With enhanced connectivity through electronic, print, and digital media, consumers are becoming more informed about safety considerations when purchasing food products. There's a growing emphasis on seeking vital nutritional and safety information on product labels. Social media platforms are also utilized to bolster safety awareness efforts. The International Food Information Council (IFIC) actively monitors data dissemination through various media channels to ensure the global spread of accurate technical information.
Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) disseminates safety best practices through its website, providing consumers with valuable resources. The collaborative efforts between leading industry authorities and social media platforms further contribute to heightened consumer awareness about food safety. Consequently, increasing consumer consciousness regarding food safety is poised to drive market growth during the forecast period.
To Learn deeper into this report , View Sample PDF
**Major Challenges:**
A significant challenge hindering market growth is the shortage of skilled laboratory professionals in food diagnostics. As awareness about safety and associated systems escalates, conducting efficient food diagnostics necessitates proper handling and compliance with regulatory procedures and good manufacturing practices (GMPs). However, the scarcity of skilled professionals impedes the effective utilization of these systems. The lack of skilled professionals leads to non-compliance among laboratory workers and researchers, resulting in deficiencies in manufacturing safe products.
Moreover, many professionals working in laboratories are either resigning or transitioning to different fields within the medical domain. The high attrition rate among laboratory professionals can be attributed to factors such as dissatisfaction with salaries and inadequate training programs, contributing to the dwindling number of skilled professionals. Consequently, the shortage of skilled professionals is anticipated to impede market growth during the forecast period.

Ad One:
This 1950s Budweiser ad depicts presumably, a husband and wife together. The wife is in the back pouring her husband a nice glass of Budweiser beer, and the husband is at the forefront of the image and is seemingly fixing something broken. Two stereotypes are being portrayed in this ad, one towards the husband and the other towards the wife. The wife has a happy expression on her face, she is so glad to be serving her husband a cold one. This reinforces the stereotype that serving her husband is a woman's only job. The fact that the wife herself is not also drinking the beer plays into the stereotype that beer is manly, and too much for her to handle. The husband's expression looks annoyed and frankly pissed at his wife. This further contributes to the wife and female stereotype that she just can't get it right. It is also stereotypical to have the husband fixing something with tools, this has no relevance to selling the product, but instead, it reassures viewers that the man consuming Budweiser is manly and strong. This contributes to the stereotype that men must be manly, and therefore it makes Budweiser a manly beer.

This is an ad for Mr. Clean’s magic eraser product. The stereotype here is fairly blatant but present. There are two components to this specific advertisement, first, the words that are displayed in the top right-hand corner, and then a visual of a mother and presumably her daughter on the left-hand side of the ad. The words are stereotypical in nature, because of the “this Mother’s Day” Had these three words been left out then this cleaning product could be marketed toward anyone, but these words let us know that the intended audience, as stereotypical as it may be, is mothers. This reaffirms the stereotype that women are the ones who should clean. Moving on to the daughter and mother, who are seen cleaning together, they each show a happy expression. They appear to be enjoying this- another stereotype, that women enjoy cleaning. According to this ad, it does not matter how old a woman, or girl is, she is ready to clean and happy to do so with Mr. Clean products.
Ad Three:
This commercial is promoting Philadelphia-branded cream cheese, not an inherently stereotypical product. However, the ad presents some classic male stereotypes. The two dads in the commercial walk into the restaurant, both holding their own babies, and then they see Philadelphia cream cheese products on the conveyor belt. They are so excited about the food, that they both set down their babies on the conveyor belt and become preoccupied with the food. This shows stereotypical dad behavior of being ignorant and careless of their children. The commercial shows the children going around the restaurant for quite sometime before their dads even notice they are gone. This ad reinforces the stereotype that men are bad parents and cannot properly care for children.
Ad Four:
This is a commercial for the Volkswagen electric Golf. It shows a man camping on the side of a mountain, a woman making a sandwich, a woman doing laundry, a man with a prosthetic leg doing a long jump, and then finally a woman sitting in the park with her child and reading a book. The words “When we learn to adapt, we can do anything” appear on the screen, these words put a bit of a suggestive lens on the commercial. At a closer look, the only people in adaptive environments in this commercial are men. The man is camping, the men are astronauts, and the man is jumping, whereas the women are not in adaptive environments, but in more traditional gender roles. This commercial implies that only men can handle adaptive environments, and therefore that only men can handle adapting to an electric Golf.
