Ghanaian peacekeeper named UN gender award winner

A Ghanaian peacekeeper serving in the disputed Sudan-South Sudan border region of Abyei has won the 2022 UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award for her efforts in promoting peace for women. Captain Cecilia Erzuah, 32, who has served in Abyei since March 2022 as the commander of the Ghana engagement platoon, will receive the award from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during a ceremony marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on Thursday. Started in 2016, the award recognises the dedication and efforts of an individual military peacekeeper in promoting the UN principles of women, peace and security. “On every front, Captain Erzuah’s work has set the standard for ensuring that the needs and concerns of women are reflected across our peacekeeping operations,” said Mr Guterres in a statement. Captain Erzuah is the first Ghanaian peacekeeper in the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) to receive the prestigious award. Senzeni Ireen Kapanga, UN peacekeeper from Zimbabwe🇿🇼 serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, is focused on the welfare of women and children in the volatile Abyei area.

She joined UNISFA in April 2017 and works as a Diffra Gender and Child protection officer, bringing to her assignment 25 years of experience as a police in Zimbabwe and a decade of experience with the Victim Friendly Unit.

“As soon as I was on the ground, I started advocating for sustainable development and focusing on formal education for children and women’s income-generating projects. We encourage women who work at their tea shops in the area to save money to expand their businesses and send their children to school.”

The project also involved community leaders and elders, a predominantly male crowd. The team worked with then to raise awareness on the inclusion of women into businesses other than the tea shops, resulting in a raise of income and an enhanced possibility of sending children to school.

During patrols, she also encouraged children to go to school and work hard to get a better life. She said it was so satisfying to see the increase of enrolments in all the three schools under the Diffra policing area, opened in December 2017.

“These are small things that keep us going as peacekeepers. Knowing that I have made a difference even to just one person so that his/her light will continue to shine and touch others”.
