I'm reading about the English Civil War now! Still not sure why the several other conflicts that might count as civil wars aren't civil wars but anyway this is THE Civil War, which is in the days of PURITANS (actual not fandom) and there's already been a guy called Praise-God Barebone, who Wikipedia informs me had a brother called - WAIT FOR IT - Unless-Jesus-Christ-Had-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned Barebone.
I am still on the backstory, which includes a bit where Charles I has inherited a "guide" who Chuck trusts completely and after a few paragraphs I was like "wait. when you say 'a courtier' of his father's, do you mean George Villiers?" Yes, yes that is who we're talking about. Okay. Glad we addressed that. (We did not).
There are two books involved, one of them is this one what is FREE from Project Gutenberg and the other is a secondhand paperback called 'The Cromwellian Protectorate' which I liked the name of and then that led to me getting the PG one because it assumes that I know who the main characters are and I mostly don't. I didn't know about Praise-God Barebone for a start.
Main question I have going in is "what is this thing and how are they going to fuck it up so badly that the monarchy get invited back?"

June 10th 1768 saw construction start on the Forth and Clyde canal, it was to take 22 years to complete.
The building of a canal across Scotland was first discussed during the reign of Charles II. It was not until the mid-1700s that the building of the Forth and Clyde Canal or “The Great Canal” as it was referred to then, became an actual possibility with funding being raised to carry out the work. The canal was to be built across the Central Belt of Scotland from east to west. The first spadeful was dug out in June 10th 1768 and the construction continued for 22 years including a 7 year period when no work was carried out due to lack of funds. It was the Canal Company’s policy to try to recruit locally to provide employment in the areas the canal crossed.
The work was hard and was manual labour with the use of picks and shovels to dig out heavy wet earth. Wages were about 10d (£0.04p) per day and the workers were a tough lot. Discipline was often hard to maintain and drink was cheap and plentiful causing various problems. Theft of tools and other equipment was common and often the workers were seasonal due to also working in the agricultural land surrounding the canal works. None the less the work was done and the canal was dug. Water was first let into the canal in 1773 when it was filled as far as Kirkintilloch, which increased this town’s profile with additional trades appearing in the area. It was 2 years later that the canal opened as far as Stockingfield, Maryhill. A cut was also made towards Glasgow as far as Hamiltonhill and then funds ran short and worked stopped for 7 years.
In 1784 work resumed when the Government of the time approved a loan of £50,000 to the Canal Company, the money coming from the Forfeited Estates Fund (a legacy of the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745) and this allowed the canal to reach Bowling. The Forth and Clyde Canal was opened from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde in the summer of 1790 with the first boat navigating its channel in August of that year.
The length of the Canal from eastern sea lock to the western sea lock was 35 miles. In 1791 the Glasgow Branch was extended from Hamiltonhill to Port Dundas giving it a length of 3.5 miles. There are 39 locks to navigate on the canal with 20 locks on the eastern section the firth of Forth to Wyndford and 19 on the western section from Maryhill to Bowling on the Firth of Clyde. The canal was crossed by many bascule bridges and made use of aqueducts such as the one over the Luggie at Kirkintilloch and the river Kelvin in Glasgow.
The canal served three main purposes. It allowed seagoing vessels passage from east to west or vice versa, therefore avoiding the long passage around the north of Scotland. It provided the fast movement of goods. Agricultural produce, mineral resources and locally produced goods could be transported more easily across Scotland. It also acted as a way for travellers to move across Scotland using “Swift” boats that linked to coach services.
The Forth and Clyde Canal had an active life into the years of the Second World War though by this time railways were carrying more goods around the country. Trade was slowly falling away though transits through the canal and day tripping continued. Eventually on 1 January 1963 the Forth and Clyde Canal closed to through traffic.
As part of the millennium celebrations in 2000, National Lottery funds were used to regenerate both canals. A boat lifting device, the Falkirk Wheel, was built to connect the Union and Forth & Clyde canals and once more allow boats to travel from the Clyde or Glasgow to Edinburgh, with a new canal connection to the River Carron and hence the River Forth. The Falkirk Wheel opened on 27th May 2002 and is now a tourist attraction. The Helix project, which includes the magnificent Kelpies is also part of this ongoing regeneration.

The crown princess is now the first Australian-born Denmark Queen consort, from the Commonwealth with Scottish roots 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Australia’s Mary Donaldson went from commoner to Danish Queen 🇩🇰
An unconventional journey from Australia’s middle class to European royalty began in an unremarkable bar in Sydney in 2000. Twenty-three years later, in what has been called a “real-life fairytale”, Mary Donaldson, becomes the queen of Denmark 🇩🇰 Queen Mary, not only of Denmark, but of the Inuit in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Mary Donaldson was born in Tasmania an island state of Australia in a Hobart’s Hospital in 1972 to Scottish parents. John Dalgleish Donaldson, and Henrietta Donaldson (Henrietta Clark Horne). The daughter of a mathematics professor and an executive assistant who had emigrated to Australia from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Tumblr media
Her father was born in the town of Cockenzie and Port Seton - (Scots: Cockennie [koˈkɪni]; Scottish Gaelic: Cùil Choinnich, meaning "cove of Kenneth") is a unified town in East Lothian, Scotland. It is on the coast of the Firth of Forth, four miles east of Musselburgh, and her mother was born in Edinburgh.
Tumblr media
Mary grew up in a middle-class suburban home alongside her siblings, Jane, Patricia and John. After her graduating with a degree in law and commerce from the University of Tasmania, She moved to Melbourne and Sydney, Mary had a high-flying career in advertising and then worked in luxury real estate. She worked during three months in Edinburgh as an account manager at an advertising agency.
But it was a chance encounter in a busy pub that would ultimately turn her life upside down. The Crown Prince sat alongside his cousin, Prince Nikolaos of Greece, his brother, Prince Prince Joachim, and Princess Martha of Norway at the “Slip Inn” in Sussex Street in Sidney as Australia celebrated Ian Thorpe's first Olympic gold.

Princess Mary and her father John Dalgleish Donaldson at her wedding in Copenhagen Cathedral on 14th May 2004.
The wedding of Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, and Mary Donaldson took place on 14 May 2004 in the Copenhagen Cathedral. Mary’s mother Henrietta ‘Etta’ Donaldson died from a heart condition two years before Mary married into royalty.
The Danish Folketing (parliament) passed a special law (Mary's Law) giving Donaldson Danish citizenship upon her marriage, a standard procedure for new foreign members of the royal family. She was previously a dual citizen of Australia and the United Kingdom. Ahead of the wedding, Mary had to give up her Australian citizenship and join Denmark's Lutheran Evangelical Church.
Tumblr media
The new Danish queen consort is of Scottish descent. Scotland's and Scandinavia's histories have long been intertwined with smatterings of Old Norse in the language, Viking and Norse settlement in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Her father, John Dalgliesh Donaldson, stressed her Scottish roots in his speech at her wedding — and claimed his own clan had once helped eject the Norse from the Hebrides.
Check out the video below and listen her father's speech: “In the 12th century, after much savage fighting, the marauding Vikings were driven out of Scotland by a band of men led by the grandfather of the first Donald, the founder of the clan MacDonald. And for those of you who are not aware, I’m wearing tonight, the dress MacDonald tartan, which is the ancient MacDonald”.
“Donald’s great-grandfather would have wondered why he went to such trouble when, some eight centuries later, we take account of today’s union between the Viking Frederick and Mary of the MacDonald clan.”
Loving words from Mary's father.
youtube
Margrethe II reigned as Queen of Denmark from 1972 until her abdication in 2024. Having reigned for 52 years, she is the longest-serving female monarch in Danish history.
The Queen of Denmark made the announcement in her New Year's Eve speech. She formally hand over the throne in a Council of State today 14th January, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., when she signed the Declaration of Abdication. From that moment on, her son became King Frederick X.

The Crown Princess Mary was crowned Queen consort alongside her husband, the new King Frederik of Denmark. It was a historic moment, for which she wore a historic outfit by the Danish designer Soeren Le Schmidt.

Any suggestions for Austen-inspired novels? I would hate to get my hands on one and have it be unbelievably out of character.
I might be a bad person to ask. I used to read a lot more JAFF but then I got super into writing it and now I have a huge list of recommendations and no time to read any of them... and I've gone back to read some JAFF I did like and now I can't handle the anachronisms and poor characterization (not going to call anyone out for that.)
I am also extremely picky. I don't like when the work is clearly based off of P&P 1995 (shrill Mrs. Bennet, Darcy is clearly Firth with curly dark hair and pinky signet ring, Mr. Collins is gross and old). I am also all about characterization and I spend a lot of time saying, "Elizabeth/Darcy would never say/do that!" Easy examples: Darcy would not kiss Elizabeth in a fit of passion (he has self control), I hate when all the angst is Elizabeth not being able to talk (ELIZABETH CAN TALK, that's like her whole thing), or instead of being playful, Elizabeth is a snarky and sometimes downright mean.
I also will not read Screaming Bag of Evil Caroline Bingley which is an extremely pervasive thing in P&P variations, the largest genre of JAFF.
My very favourite JAFF is Fanny: A Mansfield Park Story by Amelia Marie Logan. It is a really great variation.
For a P&P continuation, I liked Letters from Pemberley by Jane Dawkins.
I have only read some of her work, but I really appreciated @amarguerite's Northanger Abbey stuff. This is my favourite: Just Like One Reads About
There is also a good Northanger Abbey sequel called Gentlemen of Gloucestershire by Michelle Wood.
What you need to understand is that the world of P&P variations seems obsessed with the idea of Elizabeth and Darcy being the ONE TRUE PAIRING that will come together no matter what the circumstances. Darcy can be a literal rapist (not even joking) and he'll still end up happily married to Elizabeth in the end.
Now a lot of people like that, I am not saying this is a bad thing, but it's not the way I see the story. I think if Elizabeth hadn't gone to Pemberley, Darcy might have just gotten over her. The book makes their eventual union very much a thing of chance. It just isn't for me.
Because of this, I tend to read JAFF about Austen's other novels, which tends to be less about true pairings and more true to the characters. But it's scarce and I have no time so I haven't read a ton.
And now my totally biased pitch, both of my novels, Prideful & Persuaded and Unfairly Caught, have been praised for staying true to characterization. I also post a ton of free stuff on my website. I either write as in character as I possibly can or I write farce, there is very little middle ground.
If anyone knows of some really good in character JAFF stories, please feel free to suggest them! Also, there is SO MUCH available for free online, so read around and see what you like. Watch the tags though!

Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, and Scott Glenn in The Hunt for Red October (John McTiernan, 1990) Cast: Alec Baldwin, Sean Connery, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones, Joss Ackland, Richard Jordan, Peter Firth, Tim Curry, Courtney B. Vance, Stelban Skarsgård, Jeffrey Jones. Screenplay: Larry Ferguson, Donald E. Stewart, based on a novel by Tom Clancy. Cinematography: Jan de Bont. Production design: Terence Marsh. Film editing: Dennis Virkler, John Wright. Music: Basil Poledouris. What to make of the fact that the KGB man assigned to be "political officer" on the Red October (and swiftly offed by the defecting captain) is named Putin? Coincidence, but one of the things that make John McTiernan's film of Tom Clancy's blockbuster novel The Hunt for Red October still relevant. The film turns on the perpetual dilemma summed up in the oxymoronic Russian proverb that Ronald Reagan turned into a foreign policy, "Trust, but verify." This first Jack Ryan movie is a bit overplotted and occasionally slow to generate the tension a thriller needs, but it has weathered the fall of the Soviet Union better than a lot of stories about the Cold War, and having a character named Putin (though he's Ivan, not Vladimir) with a background similar to the current Russian strongman's does tickle the imagination a bit. The best thing about the film itself is its casting. Even though this was Alec Baldwin's only outing as Jack Ryan (he was replaced by a bigger box-office draw, Harrison Ford, in the next two Tom Clancy movies, Philip Noyce's 1992 Patriot Games and 1994 Clear and Present Danger, and the role has been played by Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski), Baldwin gets the souped-up everyman quality of the role right. But he's overshadowed -- as who isn't? -- by Sean Connery, as well as by those two Actors Who Make Every Movie They're in a Little Better: Sam Neill and Scott Glenn. The fantasy of Neill's Capt. Borodin is one of the screenplay's high points: "I will live in Montana and I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck and maybe even a recreational vehicle." It makes the character's dying words, "I would like to have seen Montana," an unexpectedly poignant moment for an action thriller. Glenn similarly finds the humanity within a character who could be just a stereotype, the tough-talking cowboy with an empathetic streak that keeps him from shooting first and asking questions later.

Girl when I tell you that you are one of the most underrated reader here I mean it to the core. Like I'm literally not kidding!!-
The reading was again so accurate and resonating. I'm so excited to write the feedback ngl. Starting with the first card heal, I've always been told that for us it's important to heal before the union and rn I'm also in my healing journey so I won't be surprised if my fs is too, both spiritually and emotionally. Second card was things are hidden card and third was misunderstanding..this combo caught my eye because lately I've been having some doubts and insecurities regarding my fs..so these cards definitely made a perfect sense to me and like a sign!? Forth was stuck in Karmic situation, well as I said before healing is essential for our journey inwont he suprised if both of us are clearing that or stuck in it, and will need to resolve before the union. Firth card was you have history, well I've been told before too that me and my partner share past life so makes sm sense, also clearing past life karma could be a thing too here while i looked at the cards. Sixth, and the last card was exhausted..i DEFINATELY am tbh so it definitely represents my current energy especially really well.
Overall, this spread seems to indicate a need for healing, patience, and resolving past or karmic issues before the relationship can deepen. You may need to take some time to focus on your own growth and healing so that the connection can unfold when the time is right. Which is super accurate and resonating!!
I am extremely greatful that you pulled literally 6 cards, i really hope and manifest that your account gets the hype it deserves. Wishing you all the very best and sending you lots of luck and good energy 🫶🏻🤍✨🧿
Have a wonderful week ahead. 🍀
Thank you so much 😭😭🤧🤧
I am so much happy that reading resonated with you💖💖🌺🌺🌟

Note
He has to be visible to both the public and the industry right now. Guild and union members who vote during awards season do need to think of him when those voting cards are in front of them.// Guild members don't read Deuxmoi and JJ. They watch screeners and hopefully judge actors on their performances and not on staged pap shots of them walking down the street. You don't see Andrew Garfield or Colin Firth doing any of this, they just let their work speak for itself. That why I said this is a weird strategy from his team because being featured on gossip sites is not what wins you awards.// I think you both have good points. He does need to be visible with awards season. He needs to be campaigning to increase his chances of winning. Yes the judges should vote on performances and nothing else but we all know that's rarely how it works. And yes, pap walks and JJ are not the way to campaign. But I don't think the pap shots or JJ is an attempt to campaign on his or his teams part. He needs to do some events where he can schmooze some of the judges. As much as I hate the thought of him doing that it is how the game is played. Get on some talk shows, do some print interviews (he usually comes across well in print), get a photo spread in a magazine. Hell Hulu needs to put his face on some billboards around LA. But the Golden Globes are kind of weird right now. They have so many problems that they weren't even televised last year and there are still issues with them. No one is really campaigning for them this year. Maybe that's why he's not doing anything. But SAG is coming up and that's a big one. He needs to start working on that now.

Coming Attractions December 2022
Tumblr media
As usual, we present monthly previews of new movies being released. These are the movies that will be hitting your local cinemas (and streaming services) this month:
December 2nd
Violent Night - David Harbour is Santa Claus in this black comedy action film. When John Leguizamo and a team of mercenaries hold a family hostage on Christmas Eve, it is up to Santa to rescue them.
Marlowe - So apparently Liam Neeson is Philip Marlowe in this upcoming noir film that has no trailer or poster but is supposed to come out this month. Count me in, if it is real.
Spoiler Alert - Jim Parsons is TV journalist Michael Ausiello in the adaptation of his memoir Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies.
Darby and the Dead - Coming to Hulu this month is the supernatural teen comedy Darby and the Dead, not to be confused with Netflix’s miniseries Boo, Bitch from earlier this year.
Lady Chatterley's Lover - Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell star in this adaptation of the novel of the same name for Netflix.
December 9th
Emancipation - From director Antonie Fuqua comes this historical epic about an enslaved man and his journey to freedom (and the Union Army). Will Smith stars in this film which will be in select theaters before hitting AppleTV+ on December 9th.
Empire of Light - Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins team up once again for this love story set at an English movie theater in the 1980s. Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward, Colin Firth, and Toby Jones star.
The Whale - Brendan Fraser stars in this Darren Aronofsky film that is earning Fraser universal acclaim for this performance.
Something from Tiffany’s - Zoey Deutch and Kendrick Sampson star in this romantic comedy coming to Prime this month.
Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again - This animated film coming to Disney+ follows the son of Larry Daley as he also becomes a night guard at the Museum of Natural History.
December 16th
Avatar: The Way of Water - After thirteen years and eight delays, audiences will return to Pandora with James Cameron’s much-anticipated sequel to the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Snow Day - Snow Day is a film I have always been a fan of and a now a musical remake of the 2000 comedy is coming to Paramount+. Count me all in.
December 23rd
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (December 21st) - Antonio Banderas returns as the titular feline in this new animated film from Dreamworks.
I Wanna Dance with Somebody - Naomi Ackie is Whitney Houston in this new music biopic.
Babylon - Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle returns to the big screen with his fourth directorial effort, this one starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt in 1920s Hollywood.
Matilda the Musical (December 25th) - Coming to Netflix on Christmas Day is the film version of the stage musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda.
Now for a quick look ahead to January, my top picks for next month are A Man Called Otto and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.
