speaking of Austen takes, what do you think of “Jane Austen and the masturbating girl” and the general idea that sense and sensibility is the result of repressed incestual feelings…
I hate it

hi! only recently started watching more historical cdramas and I see a lot of people taking about the rebirth narrative censorship issue? do you know what that’s about? thanks!
Hi, I've only watched 5 Cdramas myself and I don't want to spread any misinformation. From what I've read, the Chinese government banned time travel because they thought it was disrespectful to historical figures. I found several news articles confirming this. As for rebirth, I was told it was because of the possibility of suicide driven by wanting to be reborn, but I cannot find a source for this.
So sorry, I don't know.

so what actually makes sannyo your favorite character? what do you see in her that you don’t see in other characters
this image:

Im just kidding. Though she is really cute in it.
Truth be told, when UM came out I thought Sannyo was Super cool. Her "You darn fool" expression was probably the best expression in the whole game. but somehow, when the full game was out, she wasn't my favorite. I liked Tsukasa and Megumu and thought Chimata's outfit was crazy fun.

Though even then i preferred Sannyo's outfit design to everyone else's.
But Sannyo slipped from my mind due to what I'll call "Stage 3 syndrome" meaning, after the demo, Everyone likes the 3 stage demo characters for a while and pick a favorite among them, but when the main game comes out they get pushed aside really quick and people, more or less just move on to the new characters
But when I read her power and stuff in her Omake.txt she quickly became the coolest character in there. Of course she's a newer stage 3 boss so I obviously never expected to ever see her again.
(Though tbh my dislike of the smell of smoke probably wasn't scoring her any points, she was honestly at a disadvantage the whole time. I just like her enough to think it's cool when she's using her power instead. Besides, given what she says it's made of, it probably just smells like strange flowers anyway)
But then despite my assumption I'd never see her again, She appeared in Lotus Eaters chapter 29 and continued to appear occasionally after, Not only that......
She had the COOLEST, most cinematic intro in the entire touhou series. It was like 5 pages of slow walking through her Den politely greeting people, using her power, and even making aside comments with cynical gambling advice. Then meeting Mamizou at the door with a confident bow.
she's also got a crazy gap moe range of interests from obscure flowers to Dragons, proudly wearing the name Madame Komakusa, the after what is called the queen of Japan's alpine flowers.
And a crazy range of emotions. (Plus Lotus Eaters loves having her do something fun or cute in the background during her shift hours, even if the script dialog isn't calling for her)

she's mysterious, yet she's as expressive as an actual main character, she's got a range of principles, interests, and an incredibly cool gap moe thing going on. It's so rare for characters that were more or less side characters in their respective games to be this well rounded, I mean she's from freaking stage 3. But, She's awesome, adorable, and mysterious.
And it's not even a headcanon, or a fandom take on her, she is just genuinely like this in canon.
#sannyo komakusa#touhou project#lotus eaters#question response#I'm honestly really surprised she's not more popular. She embodies this character type as well as Yukari + Gap-moe bonus#Though obviously less powerful than characters like Yukari. Her presence can overtake a room when she's center stage#Like I'm certain even if she encountered someone as powerful as Yukari. she'd be just as passively sarcastic as she likes

I've seen people call Mina "a broodmare" because she has a child.
Hi anon!
Never heard of that expression, so I have no idea what to answer...
If this term is used as an insult to her I am also confused- is it wrong to have children? The fact that Jonathan and Mina are even able to have a child after everything they have gone through (physically & emotionally) is kinda the highlight of the novel- love wins, life defeats death.

Hey, I saw your discussion with greenleaves and had a question:
If morality is both subjective and culturally defined how should we determine when to intervene to prevent harm?
Interesting and good question!
Here’s the thing: Morality is subjective, yes, until we decide as a group on what we’ll base it on. Then we can objectively make decisions about what is and isn’t moral.
Most people (atheist and theist alike) tend to be in rough agreement that maximizing well-being and minimizing harm is a good baseline for morality, so from there we can objectively make decisions. Though, that being said, some things will inevitably fall into a grey area that kinda comes down to personal preference and point of view (e.g. if abortion counts as murder or not).
In the case of something more concretely good vs bad, for example, we know for a fact that slavery causes harm to those enslaved, so based on our decision to minimize harm, slavery is bad. Feeding the hungry, on the other hand, greatly maximizes well-being, so it’s good.
It’s also worth noting that sometimes while we agree on the end goal, we may disagree on how to accomplish it (e.g. I might prefer the government be the one feeding the hungry vs you might prefer that charities do so instead, but we both agree that the hungry should be fed).
In other words, it’s complicated. Lol
I think that morality is ultimately something of a group-wide learning experience that’s been going on for millennia, which is part of why ancient texts typically read as pretty horrific from our point of view – we know better now, so the thought of selling one’s daughter into slavery is mind-boggling to a modern reader, but in Ancient Hebrew culture it was just “how things are done” because women were seen as more like property than people.
I’m sure there will be plenty of stuff that we do that will seem abhorrent to civilizations of the future (if we last that long) that we don’t give a second thought to nowadays.
Now, as to when we should act: it kind of depends on the situation (as usual, context is key). I think the more harm a situation is causing, and the more immediate the issue, the more likely we should interfere.
I hope this made sense. If you have further questions and/or would like me to expand on something, please feel free to ask! :)

Jane and Bingley never have a recorded word between them?? I need to lie down…
Isn't that fascinating? I forget where I first learned this, but I did check and it is true. All their dialogue is described, either by Jane Bennet or the narrator.
There is a really interesting chapter of What Matters in Jane Austen by John Mullan where he lists all the characters who speak but are never quoted and it's somewhat shocking:
Captain Benwick, Persuasion Anne de Bourgh, Pride & Prejudice Georgiana Darcy, Pride & Prejudice Mr. Perry, Emma Robert Martin, Emma
The Captain Benwick one really blew me away because he seems to say so much! The Emma ones are fascinating because Mr. Perry is talked about all the time and his advice is discussed, but he's never even on page. He haunts the narrative as much as Mrs. Churchill. Robert Martin is never allowed to defend himself from Emma's slander by being quoted to the reader. We can only imagine him through her filtered opinion.

i think the popcorn popping out of their eyes in KPDH is supposed to represent "eye-popping" to show their astonishment/admiration. extra points for simultaneously segueing it into the eating popcorn meme. lol
That does make sense. I went back to the scene. We start with heart eyes:
Then abs eyes
Then corn cob eyes
Button pops off the guy's shirt and the corn eyes get butter, then heat added:
Popcorn
Anyway, I guess I was wondering if it was a specific joke for this movie or a general thing (like in anime, getting a tear drop on your head to symbolize confusion/frustration)

How and when did you find out Sannyo was your favorite 2hu?
It was definitely in Lotus Eaters. She had some great faces and fun smug interactions in Unconnected Marketeers but she suffered from being an early boss, so she doesn't get as remembered as bosses near the end of the run. Plus they are less likely to be seen again so you try not to get attached.
But she did show up and got so much more personality than even what she already had and it was amazing.

She's cheeky and you start out expecting Sannyo to be a totally different type of character, then after hours she's actually very nice, and very cute.
Then learning about Japanese alpine flowers is super fun too.
The biggest, funniest one is that she runs a gambling den, but actively enjoys making fun of gamblers which is awesome.
