Evangelion Pt. 1

I've been putting off watching this anime for the longest time but this class has given me the opportunity to finally understand its popularity and why its considered an iconic staple in the anime industry. I already had high expectations before watching the show, but the serious content and relatable themes tastefully portrayed in each episode made me appreciate it much more than I had expected (it being another typical mecha anime). Although Shinji's atypical personality contrasts with the normative masculine traits most people expect to see in shounen anime during the time of the anime release, you can't help but understand why he does certain things in the show that may not reflect the "average main character" stereotypes after being given the context behind his backstory. Shinji's cowardness, avoidant personality, and tendency to run away are all very realistic and human portrayals of how we feel internally, instead of hiding behind or pretending to act strong or manly. The adults in his life (his father, SEELE, NERV, and Misato), expect this fourteen year old boy to handle humanity's fate, scolding him for being childish, and warning him that if he refuses, he is easily discarded. Even though Shinji is cowardly, his pride as a male, unwillingness to be replaced, and the praise he receives if he pilots his Eva supersedes his fear of dying and engaging in combat with the Angels. We see this happen time and time again where he goes through depressive episodes after every traumatic event and expresses his hatred for piloting the Eva, but eventually always ends up on the frontlines against a new Angel. Shinji’s hatred for his queer masculinity overshadows his hatred for piloting, and I believe this is his way of self harming and thinking it’s the only way someone like him (an unmasculine man) can ever redeem himself and contribute to society by doing something only he can do: piloting Unit01.

head canon(?); Vortex's mech was called unit11 (eleven) (same way Evangelion were called by numbers like unit01) but after a while people just call it Vortex after the pilot's call sign. It was among the first few that actually works and was really taxing on the brain. Vortex get off the mech with nosebleed all the time.

It hasn't change much, huh?

See those numbers? This is Unit11. That means me and this guy. You don't have Vortex without one or the other.

It's not even vengeance, or may be it is. I don't really care. Oh and Shockwave was already here, back then he was like a kind uncle.

Vortex took his hand and dragged him off. First Aid's focus shifted. He looked at the hands, Vortex's hand clasp in his own.

HIs eyes felt hot, then tears were falling and he couldn't make words.

One floor from here would be Shockwave's office.

I am a big fan of NGE, having seen all the movies and the series twice over; so even though I'm not a pony specialist, I think this turned out pretty well!
