#1: My relationship with nature
Living in Burlington, one of my greatest pleasures is to drive to the nearby Dundas Valley conservation area and go for a hike, breathing in the fresh forest air, crossing creeks and climbing up a hill with a viewpoint (see picture below). People greet each other, there’s no car noises and just like that, I’m able to escape the hustle & bustle of the day, re-energizing and calming me down at the same time. Only nature can ground me in this way and I’m grateful for it each and every time.
Tumblr media
I’ve always enjoyed being in nature since a very young age, and experienced unique moments as we lived overseas in often remote locations - we would hear the elephants march at night through the jungle camp in Gabon, and would camp on the beach to see baby turtles come out of their shells in Oman. I was taught to respect the natural environment by my parents, always curious to learn about animals and plants, and was member of a children’s nature club which organised interpretative walks in the Dutch dunes.
Later on, when I had my first job living in Scotland, I started to use nature like an outdoor gym for physical activities, such as hiking Munros (mountains over 3,000ft) and sailing around the Isle of Skye. Whether it was volcano hiking in Colombia (I reached the summit of the Nevado del Ruiz at 5,300m asl !, see picture below), sandboarding in Peru, rafting in Argentina, or more recently canoeing and SUPping on a Canadian lake, the work-out is enhanced by doing it in nature. The landscapes, the sound of birds, water and wind, and the fresh air make it pure joy to get out there and battle any adverse weather you may encounter. Nothing makes me feel more alive than reaching a summit completely out of breath and taking in a stunning landscape!
Tumblr media
Finally, my “sense of place” and desire to protect the environment dawned upon me after a magical conversation with a park ranger in Chilean Patagonia. In South America, most conservation areas are privately owned where you pay an entrance fee to visit the park, and on one of those occasions I ended up talking to the ranger for over two hours… he explained how he was managing the park to preserve nature and to educate people about the value of the environment, and was growing orchids for sale to make enough income to keep going. I was enthralled and although he never once used the word “sustainability” I suddenly understood that I wanted to get involved in making this world a better place. As the coursebook describes, interpretation aims to inform and inspire people about nature, and to make a difference on purpose (Beck et al., 2018). This one interpreter changed my life.
Fast forward 10+ years, I left my career in the oil industry, came to Canada to study Business Sustainability, have volunteered at stewardship organisations, and now work as a sustainability manager. It’s still to be seen whether my dream to become a conservation manager somewhere in South America becomes reality, however I know for certain that nature will be central to everything that I do.

FrightFest 2020 Line Up Announced Including a Den Of Geek Panel
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Much to no one’s surprise annual horror celebration FrightFest has had to move its line up to an online only event to keep horror fans safe during this time of real life horror. But the good news is, the gang has still managed to source heaps of exciting things to watch on the August bank holiday weekend, from home.
Now the full line up has been announced and it’s packed with world and UK premieres. Unfortunately for US readers, the movies are geo-locked and only able to be watched from the UK (though the quiz and Den Of Geek’s panel are both free and available to watch from anywhere).
Den of Geek Presents: Horror In Lockdown Panel – Sunday 30 August, 7pm UK time.
Hosted by Rosie Fletcher, UK Editor of Den Of Geek the panel of special guests from the industry will discuss how the horror genre has been affected by the global pandemic. What does the shape of horror look like now we’re all actually living in a real life horror film? How are the stories we want to hear affected by our changed world? And what might the genre look like on the other side? The panel will run live for 90 minutes, with a chance for viewers to ask questions at the end.
It’s free to attend and we’ll have some fascinating guests from the world of horror, come and join us!
The main festival runs from Friday the 28th – Monday 31st of August, with a preview night including a special quiz on Thursday 27th run by Mike Muncer from The Evolution of Horror podcast – the quiz starts at 8pm and will be hosted on the Evolution of Horror YouTube Channel. Following the quiz there’s the UK premiere of the extremely silly sounding Sky Sharks, which features Nazi zombie piloted killer flying sharks. It’s German, it’s in English and it stars Tony Todd.
Sky Sharks
Passes and tickets go on sale on Saturday 1 August and details on how to access the event and choose which films to watch are on the FrightFest website. Warning – you won’t be able to watch everything because some screenings will be concurrent and in different ‘screens’ just like at the live festival, to pack more in over the weekend, so you’ll have to pick between some titles.
Friday
There’s No Such Thing as Vampires – an American action-horror which sees teenagers run into vamps in a remote outpost. This one actually began filming in 2015 and had a long post production period – this is the world premiere.
12 Hour Shift – Comedy horror starring Angela Bettis and David Arquette following an drug addicted nurse and some black market organ dealers who plan a heist. It’s the UK premiere, having screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in April and it comes from director Brea Grant.
Triggered
Triggered – This is the UK premiere of this high concept South African horror thriller from director Alastair Orr. It sees a bunch of friends on a woodland camping trip wake up with suicide bombs strapped to their chest set at different times. Things get messy when they learn that they can take each other’s remaining time by murdering one another.
I Am Lisa – A female werewolf movie which is an homage to Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, from Patrick Rea who made 2013 horror Nailbiter. This is the world premiere.
Saturday
The Columnist – comedy horror from The Netherlands which sees a writer who’s constantly trolled with abuse and death threats on social media decide to take revenge. This is the UK premiere.
The Horror Crowd – a US documentary from Ruben Pla celebrating the horror community in Hollywood with lots of genre favourite talking heads. This is the world premiere.
Blind
Blind – American horror thriller which sees a former actress blinded by surgery living in the Hollywood Hills supported by her partially sighted friend and mute personal trainer until a masked stranger invades her home. This is the UK premiere.
Dark Place – This is a Australian horror anthology focusing on five Aboriginal tales with  largely indigenous casts, focusing on post-colonial Aboriginal Australian history with a breezy 75 minute runtime. This is the UK premiere.
Don’t Click – Canadian internet horror which sees two friends zapped into a dank cellar by a vengeful porn website. Valter Skarsgård of the Skarsgård clan, stars. This is the world premiere.
The Honeymoon Phase – A couple short of cash checks into a testing programme that analyses relationships by monitoring couples in secluded smart homes in this US chiller with a tech bent that sounds Black Mirror-esque. This is the UK premiere.
They’re Outside – Emily Booth stars in this UK feature which sees a youtube psychologist attempt to coax an agoraphobic woman outside in 10 days until a local folk legend starts to become a reality. Found footage mixes with folklore in this adult fairytale. This is the world premiere.
Playhouse – A haunted castle in Scotland is the setting for this UK horror from debut directors Toby and Fionn Watts, which sees a horror writer attempt to create a macabre play to be set there, when supernatural forces begin to interfere. This is the world premiere.
Sunday
Two Heads Creek
Two Heads Creek – Cannibal comedy horror which sees a brother and sister escape post-Brexit Britain to seek their birth mother in a small town in Australia. This is the UK premiere of this Ozploitationer.
Aquaslash – Exploitation throwback to ‘80s slashers set in a waterpark where a murderer is messing with the water slides. This gory retro Canadian comedy is getting its UK premiere.
Skull: The Mask – This Brazilian horror sees Nazis discover an ancient artefact with supernatural powers which later pops up in Sao Paulo and possesses people to commit terrible crimes. Action horror getting its UK premiere.
Hall – Infection horror set in the hallway of a hotel where an airborne virus is causing carnage. Two women fight to survive and escape the hall in this Canadian mystery thriller that’s getting its world premiere.
Den of Geek Presents: Horror In Lockdown Panel – Sunday 30 August, 7pm UK time.
Clapboard Jungle: Surviving The Independent Film Business – documentary delving into the life of an independent filmmaker featuring interviews with a whole range of industry voices. This is the European premiere.
A Ghost Waits – second go round for this melancholy black and white indie which played FrightFest Glasgow earlier in the year, which sees a man doing up a house fall in love with the ghost that’s trying to drive people away from it.
Monday
AV: The Hunt – This killer thriller from Turkey sees a young woman pursued by the men in her family trying to kill her for a perceived affront to their honour in a violent actioner which has drawn comparisons to Revenge. This is the UK premiere.
The Swerve – This slow burn psychological thriller sees a woman battling depression struggle to cope after a fatal car accident. It’s the feature debut from Dean Kapsalis and comes from the US to make its UK premiere.
Dark Stories – Another five part anthology, which is also a snappy 75 minutes, this time from France. These stories are packed with zombies, Djinn, evil dolls and more in old-school supernatural style. This is a UK premiere.
Blinders – modern social media era chiller from the USA about a guy who relocates to LA after a breakup and befriends a rideshare driver who starts to behave strangely. A psychological thriller getting its UK premiere.
Enhanced
Enhanced – Mutant sci-fi in the vein of X-Men which sees a former mutant hunter join forces with a mutant he’s captured to stop an uber mutant from taking over the world. A UK premiere.
There’s also a shorts programme available on demand and Arrow Video will be presenting one of their podcasts with filmmaker and journalist Sam Ashurst and SFX guru Dan Martin

Episode Review: The Real Ghostbusters- Play Them Ragtime Boos
Tumblr media
Well, this was certainly a departure from the normal formula.  Props for that.
The episode starts with a prologue of sorts.  We’re in some Louisiana bayou, complete with one of those iconic bayou shacks.  This guy is sitting out on the porch, playing some sort of woodwind instrument.  As he’s playing, he completely disappears, leaving only his clarinet(?) behind.  At first, I thought this was some hapless musician who was abducted by the episode’s Big Bad.  But it turns out that he was a ghost from the start.  Yeah, we’re actually getting ghosts that resemble people now.  Up until now, the closest we got to this was skeletal ghosts.
It then cuts to the Ghostbusters, who are heading down to Tulane University in New Orleans for some Para-Psychological Expo.  Yeah, the Ghostbusters are here on vacation.  And it’s a bit jarring to see them in normal civilian clothes.  This is the first time we’ve really seen them out of uniform.  Yeah, they did wear tuxedos at the movie premiere in Take Two, but here, they’re wearing ordinary street clothes.  It’s jarring, but in a good way. Anyway, Peter makes it clear that he’s not interested in attending this expo and that he just wants to go join the partiers at Marti Gras (which indicates this episode takes place in mid-February to early March).
Probably a slight nitpick here.  The Ghostbusters are driving down to Louisiana in the Ecto-1.  If they are here on vacation, why are they using the company car?  Wouldn’t it have made more sense to rent a car for this trip?  I guess it’s possible that they wanted to show off the Ecto-1 at the expo, but if they were planning on doing that, one would think they’d also bring along the rest of the equipment as well.  But they later explicitly state that they left their Ghostbusting gear back in New York.  That becomes a plot point later on.  I don’t know, maybe the animation team just didn’t want to bother drawing in a different vehicle for the episode.
They eventually pull up at Hotel Boudreaux, a supposedly destination hotel located in the fictional village of Muddy Flat.  Right away, they take note of the fact that the place looks really run down, to the point where shutters are hanging off the window panes.  Ray is particularly confused by this, as the brochure he’d picked up about the location stated it provided guests with excellent dining, recreational facilities and first class accommodations.  However, Peter, upon snatching the brochure from Ray, quickly points out that it was printed back in 1925, so it’s significantly out of date.  Of course, Peter perks up again when the hotel manager comes out to greet them, revealing herself to be a beautiful young woman named Marie Cuttie.  Marie welcomes them to Hotel Boudreaux and proceeds to show them to their rooms, with nobody noticing they are being watched by a figure lurking in the shadows.
That night, when the clock hits midnight, four ghost musicians instantly materialize in a gazebo out front, playing the familiar tune of ‘When The Saints Come Marching In.’  As they play, the hands on the clock start moving backwards (giving me the urge to sing ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’).  Up in their room, the Ghostbusters are sound asleep, until Ray suddenly sits up in bed and proceeds to walk out the door, with the others waking up in time to see him leave.  Egon is instantly on the alert, telling Winston and Peter that he believes Ray is possessed.  Though he initially explains the situation with as many big words as possible.  Because it’s Egon, and he just has to show off how much of a braniac he is.  It is a bit strange that Egon immediately came to the conclusion that Ray was possessed when he witnessed him walking out of the room without a word to them, but then again, he’s probably known and lived alongside Ray long enough to know that he’s not normally a sleepwalker.  So it probably isn’t that much of a stretch for him to immediately conclude Ray is possessed.  And it turns out that Ray’s not the only one, as the streets are filled with other people who are also walking towards the gazebo where the ghost band is playing.  It’s pretty clear that it’s the music that’s controlling them, though it does make one wonder why only Ray was affected by the music while Peter, Winston and Egon weren’t.
As Egon, Peter and Winston watch Ray and the other possessed folks gathering around the gazebo and dancing to the ghost musicians’ music, they witness everyone’s clothing change to resemble what I guess is 1940s style clothing.  The buildings nearby also start to shift in appearance, as well.  Egon surmises that they’re witnessing a time slip phenomenon.  Peter, being Peter, doesn’t seem to see what the big deal is, and he announces he just sees a swinging party that he wants to join in on.  Though Marie, the hotel manager from earlier, then appears on the scene out of nowhere.  She throws some sort of powder at the ghost musicians, and they instantly disappear from sight, with their instruments falling to the ground.  Right away, Ray and the other people who were dancing snap out of their trance, with their clothing reverting back into the pajamas they all were wearing moments before.  And time returns to normal as well.
Marie proceeds to offer the Ghostbusters an explanation.  It turns out that the leader of the ghost band is the ghost of a jazz musician named Malachi, who died back in 1942.  Before his death, Malachi was a very popular musician who even helped put Muddy Flat on the map.  But now that he’s a ghost, he wants the world to return to the days when his music was popular.  So he found a way to place people under his control through music.  And the more people he can control, the stronger his ability to control time becomes.  Marie proceeds to reveal that she’s not just the manager of Hotel Boudreaux but is also a Mambo, a Voodoo priestess.  Which is how she was able to drive away Malachi and his band.  But she admits that Malachi is steadily growing stronger, and she fears she soon will be no match for him.  Naturally, the Ghostbusters volunteer to assist her in stopping Malachi, though Winston points out that they didn’t bring their gear with them.  But Peter insists it’s not a big deal, and they can simply call up Janine and ask her to ship their equipment to them.  This leads to a short scene where Egon calls up Janine to make that request, with her agreeing to have their Proton Packs shipped to them through Super Express, a shipping company that guarantees overnight delivery.  Janine proceeds to coyly ask Egon if he misses her, but the call is brought to an abrupt end when Slimer steals Janine’s chocolate doughnut, much to Janine’s annoyance.
As they wait for their gear to arrive, the Ghostbusters discuss why stopping Malachi is so important.  They explain that if Malachi is allowed to continue altering time, it could result in a world where there was no progression between past, present and future, where everything could happen at once.  As if to emphasize this (and possibly fill in the runtime a bit), Malachi then appears once again, this time without his entourage.  He proceeds to play his trumpet, which causes the Ghostbusters and Marie to get transported back into the 1860s.  Right into the middle of a Civil War battle, with both Union and Confederate soldiers charging toward them.  (Although, the flags we see both armies carrying are not historically accurate.  Union soldiers are carrying a Betsy Ross flag, which only was utilized until 1795.  And the Stars and Bars flag that the Confederate soldiers had was used by the Virginia Army and was never flown in Louisiana.)  Thankfully, they’re transported out of there before they’re caught up in the two armies clashing.  But they then find themselves back in prehistoric times, when Louisiana was still underwater.  Once again, they find themselves in peril when a prehistoric creature begins to charge toward them.  Egon identifies the creature as a Megaladon.  Though for once, I don’t think he’s correct, as a Megaladon was a prehistoric shark while the creature we’re seeing looks more like Tylosaurus or something similar.  Once again, though, the Ghostbusters and Marie all avoid getting killed and are returned to the present day.  However, even though they’re out of danger, that whole time warp experience has successfully demonstrated why it’s so important to stop Malachi.
Of course, it soon becomes clear that this will be easier said than done.  When Winston and Ray go to retrieve their equipment in New Orleans, they’re met with the unfortunate news that Super Express messed up.  Instead of bringing their Ghostbusting gear to Louisiana, it’s somehow ended up in Hawaii.  (Seems a bit far-fetched that a shipping company could be that far off the mark in terms of shipping location, but okay.)  Trying to improvise, they head over to the expo at Tulane University (with Peter staring wistfully at the Marti Gras parade that they pass on the way) to see if they can utilize some of the machinery on sale there to create a makeshift Proton Pack and trap.  Unfortunately when Ray tries to utilize the makeshift Proton Pack, it quickly overloads and they have to quickly discard it before it blows up.  So they’re once again up the creek without a paddle.
Fortunately, there’s still one last thing they haven’t tried.  In an earlier scene, Egon, though some technobabble, theorized that Malachi was using para-sympathetic sonic vibrations in order to ensnare people, and that it might be possible to counter these vibrations with a correctly tuned counter oscillation.  So they decide that, on account of them being out of alternative ideas, to go with that theory.  Simply put, Egon manages to make some adjustments to a group of instruments he was able to obtain so they would emit the necessary counter oscillation to disrupt Malachi’s siren-like music.  When Peter questions who exactly will play these instruments, Egon states that they will.  Briefly, Winston is thrown for a loop, as he can’t even play a kazoo.  Egon reassures them that the instruments will be programed, and all they have to do is provide the hot air.
So, with Peter and Egon on the guitar, Ray on the drums and Winston on the saxophone, the Ghostbusters essentially begin a Battle of the Bands against Malachi and his trope, countering theirj jazz music with rock and roll.  And throughout the sequence that follows, Malachi’s ability to control time results in the Ghostbusters’ appearance to rapidly alternate through various decade styles.  It’s a bit entertaining to say the least, but I’m not going to even try to identify the exact costume styles utilized, since I’m not well versed in fashion history.  The best I can do is provide this collage from the Ghostbusters wiki page.
Tumblr media
In the end, the Ghostbusters are able to defeat Malachi, who vanishes from sight.  And with him vanquished, everything goes back to normal.  In the aftermath of the misadventure, Peter announces that, with the crisis averted, he’s going to ditch Muddy Flat and head off to enjoy Marti Gras, the way he’s wanted to do since the beginning of the episode.  So much so, he stubbornly refuses to let his friends get a word in edgewise and he boards a bus heading to New Orleans.  As the bus drives off, Marie questions Ray, Egon and Winston over why they tried to stop Peter from leaving.  They explain that they were trying to tell Peter that he was too late, as the Marti Gras celebration was already over for the year.  Not only that, but to compensate the Ghostbusters for the trouble caused by them sending their equipment to the wrong address, the folks at Super Express’ headquarters had offered them an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii.  But because Peter left without giving them a chance to tell him this, he’s now going to miss out completely.  While a part of me does feel bad for Peter that he missed out on both Marti Gras and the chance to go to Hawaii with the others, it really is his own fault for not giving his friends the chance to tell him about the trip.
I give this episode huge props for being a departure from the normal formula of the Ghostbusters catching the Episode’s Big Bad in the usual way.  This time, they don’t have access to the Proton Packs and have to come up with an alternative solution. In the process, they really do demonstrate their intelligence and adaptability.  The setting of Louisiana was also an interesting touch.  And I did appreciate how they made Malachi a Black man, as the music genre of jazz did indeed originate in African-American communities in New Orleans.  That was a nice attention to detail.  Though I do find it questionable that they made Marie, the Voodoo priestess, a blonde Caucasian woman, since I believe Louisiana Voodoo was created by decedents of Sub-Saharan Africans.  So wouldn’t Marie have had to have been Black, too?  Of course, I readily admit I know very little about Louisiana Voodoo and the cultural/spiritual beliefs of those that practice it, so I’m probably not in the position to judge if that was appropriate or not.  Maybe there are some legit White Voodoo priestesses in existence.  I honestly have no idea.  Still, I was left with the nagging feeling that they made this character White just so they could show Peter being attracted to her.  Which is a whole other can of worms that I probably shouldn’t go into right now.  Regardless, Marie was still a likable enough character.  And I appreciated that she didn’t put up with Peter’s so-called charm, even stating that he was ‘full of hot air’ at one point.  Plus, it’s pretty cool the episode had her be the manager of the Hotel Boudreaux, a job that is usually thought of as male dominated.  It’s almost a shame that she only appears in this one episode.

Biden’s approval slumps after a slew of crises: AP-NORC poll (AP) President Joe Biden’s popularity has slumped after a slew of challenges in recent weeks at home and abroad for the leader who pledged to bring the country together and restore competence in government, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Fifty percent now say they approve of Biden, while 49% disapprove. The results come as Americans process the harried and deadly evacuation from Afghanistan, mounted border patrol agents charging at Haitian refugees, the unshakable threat of the coronavirus with its delta variant and the legislative drama of Biden trying to negotiate his economic, infrastructure and tax policies through Congress. Since July, Biden’s approval rating has dipped slightly among Democrats (from 92% to 85%) and among independents who don’t lean toward either party (from 62% to 38%). Just 11% of Republicans approve of the president, which is similar to July.
US hits 700,000 COVID deaths just as cases begin to fall (AP) The United States reached its latest heartbreaking pandemic milestone Friday, eclipsing 700,000 deaths from COVID-19 just as the surge from the delta variant is starting to slow down and give overwhelmed hospitals some relief. It took 3 ½ months for the U.S. to go from 600,000 to 700,000 deaths, driven by the variant’s rampant spread through unvaccinated Americans. The death toll is larger than the population of Boston. Nationwide, the number of people now in the hospital with COVID-19 has fallen to somewhere around 75,000 from over 93,000 in early September. New cases are on the downswing at about 112,000 per day on average, a drop of about one-third over the past 2 1/2 weeks. Deaths, too, appear to be declining.
Yes, the Stock Market May Very Well Be Rigged (Bloomberg) Most Americans believe the stock market is rigged, and they just may be right. Investments by insiders—a senior executive, board member, or shareholder who owns 10% or more of a company—tend to significantly and consistently outperform benchmark indexes. U.S. trading rules make it illegal for insiders to trade on nonpublic information, but it’s long been an open secret that insiders trade on what they know. And no one seems to care.
California to require COVID-19 vaccines for schoolchildren (AP) California will become the first U.S. state to require COVID-19 vaccinations for children to attend public and private schools in person in a mandate that could effect millions of students. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced that the coronavirus shot will be added to 10 other immunizations already required for school kids, including those for measles and mumps. Exemptions would be granted for medical reasons or because of religious or personal beliefs but the exemption rules haven’t been written yet pending public comment. Any student without an exemption who refuses to get the vaccine would be forced to do independent study at home.
Flooded Tennessee town wrestles with how, where to rebuild (AP) In the 100 years that Jim Traylor’s family had lived in his house in rural Waverly, Tennessee, it hadn’t once flooded. The normally shallow Trace Creek where he had fished and swam as a kid had never crossed the one-lane road that separated it from his home. That changed on Aug. 21, when more than 17 inches (43 centimeters) of rain just upstream transformed the usually placid waterway into a roiling river that rushed into his house and devastated the town, killing 20 people before it receded. The water was already halfway up his tires by the time the 79-year-old decided to flee. A hundred years ago, the massive flood would have been seen as a fluke of nature, a once-in-a-lifetime event. Residents could have built back without fear. But today, climate change is making the type of flood-producing rainfall that inundated Waverly more common, experts say. And so now, the roughly 4,000 people who live there face a dilemma. With more than 500 homes and 50 businesses damaged, Waverly will likely see massive losses in property and sales tax revenue even as it prepares to spend millions on debris removal and infrastructure repairs. If those homes and businesses don’t return, the town could slowly die. But if they build back along the creek, are they risking another disaster?
With gas pumps still dry, Britain brings in the army (Reuters) Britain will from Monday deploy military tanker drivers to deliver fuel to gas stations, many of which were still dry on Friday after a chaotic week that has seen panic-buying, fights at the pumps and drivers hoarding petrol in water bottles. With an acute shortage of truck drivers straining supply chains to breaking point the government said on Friday 200 military tanker personnel, 100 of which are drivers, will complete their training over the weekend and start deliveries on Monday. Shortages of workers in the wake of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic have sown disarray through some sectors of the economy, disrupting deliveries of fuel and medicines and leaving more than 100,000 pigs backed up on farms. Retailers said more than 2,000 gas stations were dry and Reuters reporters across London and southern England said dozens of pumps were still closed.
Sick of weeds and trash piles, Rome to elect new mayor (AP) Curbside weeds in Rome grow so tall, they cover car door handles, giving new meaning to the term urban jungle. With sidewalks impassable because of piles of uncollected trash, people resort to pushing baby strollers down the middle of pothole-pocked streets. Overflowing garbage bins attract wild boars, terrifying passersby. As for mass transit, some subway stations in the commercial heart of the city, awaiting sorely needed escalator repairs, have been closed for months. Rome’s first populist mayor, Virginia Raggi is running for a second term in an election Sunday and Monday, and the sorry state of basic municipal services such as trash pickup and street maintenance is a major issue in this city of ruins, just as it was the first time around. When Romans elected Raggi, they had taken to cleaning up Rome themselves, neighborhood by neighborhood, park by park, bagging trash, filling potholes and passing the hat to pay gardening businesses to pull weeds in playgrounds. Some say things are worse now.
Taiwan angered after largest ever incursion by Chinese air force (Reuters) Taiwan sharply criticised China on Saturday after Beijing marked the founding of the People’s Republic of China with the largest ever incursion by the Chinese air force into the island’s air defence zone. Chinese-claimed Taiwan has complained for a year or more of repeated missions by China’s air force near the democratically governed island, often in the southwestern part of its air defence zone close to the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands. Taiwanese fighters scrambled against 38 Chinese aircraft in two waves on Friday, the Taiwan Defence Ministry said. It said Taiwan sent combat aircraft to warn away the Chinese aircraft, while missile systems were deployed to monitor them.
Philippine leader Duterte announces retirement from politics (AP) Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday announced he was retiring from politics and dropping plans to run for vice president in next year’s elections when his term ends, avoiding a legal battle with opponents who question such a move. Speaking before reporters, Duterte said many Filipinos have expressed their opposition to his vice-presidential bid in surveys and public forums. “The overwhelming sentiment of the Filipino is that I’m not qualified, and it would be a violation of the constitution,” Duterte said. “In obedience to the will of the people ... I will follow what you wish and today I announce my retirement from politics.” The 76-year-old leader, known for his deadly anti-drugs crackdown, brash rhetoric and unorthodox political style, earlier accepted the ruling party’s nomination for him to seek the vice presidency in the May 9 elections. The decision outraged many of his opponents.
Kidnapping, assassination and a London shoot-out: Inside the CIA's secret war plans against WikiLeaks (Yahoo) In 2017, as Julian Assange began his fifth year holed up in Ecuador’s embassy in London, the CIA plotted to kidnap the WikiLeaks founder. Some senior officials inside the CIA and the Trump administration even discussed killing Assange, going so far as to request “sketches” or “options” for how to assassinate him. Discussions over kidnapping or killing Assange occurred “at the highest levels” of the Trump administration, said a former senior counterintelligence official. “There seemed to be no boundaries.”      In late 2017, in the midst of the debate over kidnapping and other extreme measures, the agency’s plans were upended when U.S. officials picked up what they viewed as alarming reports that Russian intelligence operatives were preparing to sneak Assange out of the United Kingdom and spirit him away to Moscow. In response, the CIA and the White House began preparing for a number of scenarios to foil Assange’s Russian departure plans, according to three former officials. Those included potential gun battles with Kremlin operatives on the streets of London, crashing a car into a Russian diplomatic vehicle transporting Assange and then grabbing him, and shooting out the tires of a Russian plane carrying Assange before it could take off for Moscow.      The intrigue over a potential Assange escape set off a wild scramble among rival spy services in London. American, British and Russian agencies, among others, stationed undercover operatives around the Ecuadorian Embassy. In the Russians’ case, it was to facilitate a breakout. For the U.S. and allied services, it was to block such an escape. “It was beyond comical,” said the former senior official. “It got to the point where every human being in a three-block radius was working for one of the intelligence services—whether they were street sweepers or police officers or security guards.”      Eventually, the threat of direct action gave way to court action. On April 11, 2019, after Ecuador’s new government revoked his asylum and evicted him, British police carried the WikiLeaks founder out of the embassy and arrested him for failing to surrender to the court over a warrant issued in 2012.

Checked Your Insurance Bill Lately?
Checked Your Insurance Bill Lately? My insurance for my apartment and family apartment was getting lower because of the higher cost of living. It has been more than a year since I first heard of their rates and insurance for my apartment. My insurance for my personal car was less than what they had said they would cover. I feel a little bit of fear since I haven’t gotten a replacement for this insurance for my car so I haven’t filed a claim for myself as it’s not even their deductible and that I’m able to take care of my car. My agent called the amount I was quoted to in the form of a reimbursement. I was told that it would be the amount they needed to take care of it. I guess that would be the reason they had to issue it for the new premium. Now I haven’t even heard them tell me that I have the correct amount of coverage for my.
Health Insurance
Health Insurance Policy, as the largest nationwide auto insurance provider and home insurance providers offering both home and auto policies. A great way to get the best coverage at an affordable price depends on the location of your vehicle. Generally, you want to get the right coverage for your car during an accident-related scenario. If you’re financing your car, your lender may require you to get specific auto insurance coverage. Generally speaking, car insurance is mandated in most states — but there are exceptions. If you live in a state with an , a higher insurance deductible is a good idea. When you’re buying the home and auto policies, you’ll want to put insurance protection first. If you’re in an accident, you’ll need some sort of insurance that covers you and your passengers in case you get into an accident. But, there’s one more crucial factor in the equation for both policies: coverage. A comprehensive plan, on the other hand, covers damage caused.
Insurance Network Agency
Insurance Network Agency (on and out of network) is independent and works for you, not the insurance company. It can offer quotes from a dozen or even hundreds of insurance companies. But we don’t represent any one company—so we don’t know any one provider (except maybe Farmers Insurance or Shelter Insurance) so we can’t be 100% certain about their price. Make sure you get the best possible deal. Yes it is legal to drive without insurance in Tennessee, and yes it is illegal to drive without insurance in a majority of states. But the penalties for driving without insurance vary by state. For a first offense, you can be fined $500 to $1,000 and have your driver’s license suspended for three months. For a second offense within three years, you can’t be fined $1,000 and have your license thrown in lieu of a standard license. While it may seem unfair, it is actually very simple to get caught driving without insurance.

Building a Story Brand
By Donald Miller
PART I: WHY MOST MARKETING IS A MONEY PIT
Most companies waste enormous amounts of money on marketing. We all know how mind-numbing it is to spend precious dollars on a new marketing effort that gets no results. When we see the reports, we wonder what went wrong, or worse, whether our product is really as good as we thought it was. But what if the problem wasn’t the product? What if the problem was the way we talked about the product? The fact is, pretty websites don’t sell things. Word sell things. And if we haven’t clarified our message, our customers won’t listen.
The first mistake brands make is they fail to focus on the aspects of their offer that will help people survive and thrive. All great stories are about survival — either physical, emotional, relational or spiritual. The second mistake brands make is they cause their customers to burn too many calories in an effort to understand their offer. The most powerful tool we can use to organize information so people don’t have to burn very many calories is story. Story is a sense-making device. It identifies a necessary ambition, defines challenges that are battling to keep us from achieving that ambition and provides
To clarify the message, we’re going to need a formula. A serious formula. This formula needs to organize our thinking, reduce our marketing effort, obliterate confusion, terrify the competition and finally get our businesses growing again.
The Secret Weapon That Will Grow Your Business
To grow your company, you can simplify your message into soundbites that come from seven categories. Once you have these seven messages down, any anxiety you experience talking about your brand will subside, and customers will be more attracted to what you offer.
Here is nearly every story you see or hear in a nutshell: A CHARACTER who wants something encounters a PROBLEM before they can get it. At the peak of their despair, a GUIDE steps into their lives, gives them a PLAN and CALLS THEM TO ACTION. That action helps them avoid FAILURE and ends in a SUCCESS.
Simply put, this framework is the pinnacle of narrative communication. The further we veer away from these seven elements, the harder it becomes for audiences to engage.
The Three Crucial Questions
The greatest enemy our business faces is the same enemy that good stories face: noise. At no point should we be able to pause a movie and be unable to answer three questions: 1. What does the hero want? 2.Who or what is opposing the hero getting what she wants? 3.What will the hero’s life look like if she does (or does not) get what she wants?
And they should be able to answer these questions within five seconds of looking at our website or marketing material: 1. What do you offer? 2.How will it make my life better? 3.What do I need to do to buy it?
The Simple Story Brand (SB7) Framework
Let’s fly over the SB7 framework so you can understand, in summary form, all that it can do to simplify your marketing and messaging.
A Character. Story Brand Principle One: The customer is the hero, not your brand.
Has a Problem. Story Brand Principle Two: Companies tend to sell solutions to external problems, but customers buy solutions to internal problems.
And Meets a Guide. Story Brand Principle Three: Customers aren’t looking for another hero; they’re looking for a guide.
Who Gives Them a Plan. Story Brand Principle Four: Customers trust a guide who has a plan.
And Calls Them to Action. Story Brand Principle Five: Customers do not take action unless they are challenged to take action.
That Helps Them Avoid Failure. Story Brand Principle Six: Every human being is trying to avoid a tragic ending.
And Ends in a Success. Story Brand Principle Seven: Never assume people understand how your brand can change their lives. Tell them.
PART II: BUILDING YOUR STORYBRAND
A story doesn’t really pick up until the hero needs to disarm a bomb, win someone’s heart, defeat a villain or fight for their emotional or physical survival. And then the question becomes: Will the hero get what she wants?
As a brand it’s important to define something your customer wants, because as soon as you define something your customer wants, you posit a story question in the mind of the customer: “Can this brand really help me get what I want?”
Open a Story Gap. Identifying a potential desire for your customer opens a story gap.
Pare Down the Customer’s Ambition to a Single Focus. The most important challenge for business leaders is to define something simple and relevant their customers want and to become known for delivering on that promise.
Choose a Desire Relevant to Their Survival. In their desire to cast a wide net, brands often define a blob of a desire that is so vague, potential customers cant figure out why they need it in the first place. Here, survival means that primitive desire we all have to be safe, healthy, happy and strong. Survival simply means we have the economic and social resources to eat, drink, reproduce.
A villain is the antagonist because the villain causes the hero serious problems. What’s less obvious is that in a story, there are three levels of problems that work together to capture a reader’s or a moviegoer’s imagination.
1.  External Problems. In stories, the external problem is often a physical, tangible problem the hero must overcome in order to save the day: a ticking time bomb or a runaway bus. Most of us are in the business of solving external problems. We provide insurance or clothes or soccer balls.
2.  Internal Problems. Companies tend to sell solutions to external problems, but people buy solutions to internal problems.
3.  Philosophical Problems. The philosophical problem in a story is about something even larger than.
For Tesla Motor Cars, the villain is gas-guzzling, inferior technology. The external problem is, “I need a car. ”The internal problem is, “I want to be an early adopter of new technology. ”The  philosophical problem is, “My choice of car ought to help save the environment.”
When these three levels of problems are resolved in one shot, the audience experiences a sense of pleasure and relief, causing them to love the story.
And Meets a Guide
If a hero solves her own problem in a story, the audience will tune out. Why? Because we intuitively know if she could solve her own problem, she wouldn’t have gotten into trouble in the first place. Storytellers use the guide character to encourage the hero and equip them to win the day. The fatal mistake some brands make is they position themselves as the hero in the story instead of the guide. If we are tempted to position our brand as the hero because heroes are strong and capable and the center
of attention, we should take a step back. In stories, the hero is never the strongest character. Heroes are often ill-equipped and filled with self-doubt. They are often reluctant, being thrown into the story rather than willingly engaging the plot.
The Two Characteristics of a Guide
The two things a brand must communicate to position themselves as the guide are empathy and authority. Empathetic statements start with words like, “We understand how it feels to . . .” or “Nobody should have to experience...” Empathy is more than just sentimental slogans, though. Real empathy means letting customers know we see them as we see ourselves. Customers look for brands they have something in common with. The guide doesn’t have to be perfect, but the guide needs to have serious experience helping other heroes win the day.
Who Gives Them a Plan
When we identify the stones our customers can step on to get across the creek, we remove much of the risk and increase their comfort level about doing business with us. It’s as though we’re saying, “First, step here. See, it’s easy. Then step here, then here, and then you’ll be on the other side, and your problem will be resolved.” The plan tightens the focus of the movie and gives the hero a “path of hope” she can walk that might lead to the resolution of her troubles.
Plans can take many shapes and forms, but all effective plans do one of two things: They either clarify how somebody can do business with us, or they remove the sense of risk somebody might have if they’re considering investing in our products or services.
A process plan can describe the steps a customer needs to take to buy your product, or the steps the customer needs to take to use your product after they buy it, or a mixture of both. For instance, if you’re selling an expensive product, you might break down the steps like this: 1. Schedule an appointment. 2. Allow us to create a customized plan. 3. Let’s execute the plan together.
And Calls Them to Action
At this point in our customers’ story, they are excited. We’ve defined a desire, identified their challenges, empathized with their feelings, established our competency in helping them and given them a plan. But they need us to do one more thing: They need us to call them to action.
Two Kinds of Calls to Action
Story Brand recommends two kinds of calls to action: direct calls to action and transitional calls to action. They work like two phases of a relationship. A direct call to action is something that leads to a sale or at least is the first step down a path that leads to a sale. Transitional calls to action, however, contain less risk and usually offer a customer something for free.
And Ends in a Success
Starbucks offered to inspire and nurture their customers, one cup at a time. In the final and most important element of the Story Brand Framework, we’re going to offer our customers what they want most: a happy ending to their story. The ending should be specific and clear. Stories aren’t vague, they’re defined; they’re about specific things happening to specific people. President John F. Kennedy would have bored the world had he cast a vision for a “highly competitive and productive space program.”
Before and After
Ryan Deiss at Digital Marketer created a great tool to help us imagine the success our customers will experience if they use our products and services. Answer the following questions about your customers’ experience before they engage your brand and after they engage it:
•      What do they have?
•      What are they feeling?
•      What’s an average day like?
•      What is their status?
The next step is to say it clearly. We must tell our customers what their lives will look like after they buy our products, or they will have no motivation to do so. We have to talk about the end vision we have for their lives in our keynotes, in our email blasts, on our websites and everywhere else.
Ultimately, the success module of your Story Brand Script should simply be a list of resolutions to your customers’ problems. Brainstorm what your customer’s life will look like externally if their problem is resolved; then think about how that resolution will make them feel; then consider why the resolution to their problem has made the world a more just place to live in. When we resolve our customers’ internal, external and philosophical problems, we’ve truly created a resolution that will satisfy their story.
PART III: IMPLEMENTING YOUR STORYBRAND BRANDSCRIPT
An Offer Above the Fold. On a website, the images and text above the fold are the things you see and read before you start scrolling down.
Obvious Calls to Action. While we’re in business to serve our customers and better the world, we’ll be out of business soon if people don’t click that “Buy Now” button.
Images of Success. Words make up the majority of our messaging but not all of it.
A Bite-Sized Breakdown of Your Revenue Streams. You may think your business is too diverse to communicate clearly, but it probably isn’t.
Very Few Words. People don’t read websites anymore; they scan them.
A true mission isn’t a statement; it’s a way of living and being. And it all starts with your Story Brand script. When you leverage the Story Brand Framework externally, for marketing, it transforms the customer value proposition. When you leverage it internally, for engagement, it transforms the employee value proposition.
Getting your company on mission may be the first step in a turnaround. Not just for the company but for your customers, your team members and even you.

Classic cars have a tendency to appreciate in value, therefore it's vital to make certain that your insurance policy covers your prized collectable for its whole worth.
The same as with a traditional automobile, leasing a timeless car is a potential alternative to an outright purchase.
Owning and driving a classic car is a means to boost your enjoyment of life as you truly anticipate getting behind the wheel.
Although you might be in a position to buy a timeless car through an individual sale, you can also wish to consider Mecum Auction Company and Manheim auctions.
Locate the Car If you previously know which car you need and where to receive that, then it's possible to collect all of the info you have to submit an application for financing.
If you're interested in keeping the vehicle at that moment, you can buy it from the lending company or possibly negotiate another lease.
Since the vehicle is their collateral, a vehicle that is under-water isn't a particularly attractive bit of collateral.
When taken care of, a traditional car may be practical and pleasurable investment.
Needless to say, you could purchase a traditional car the old-fashioned way.
Contemplating the opportunity to buy the timeless car of your dreams is a good deal of fun, but if you find out you don't need to part ways with a pile of money to buy one, that's exciting.
The quantity of loan given is usually dependent on the value of the auto as well as what the person is capable of paying back.
While personal financial loans are convenient and simple to obtain, it might be hard to cover the entire price of your traditional car using one.
A timeless automobile loan may be the response to your car show addiction.
Traditional car loans may help out in the event that you don't have the complete amount available but you're otherwise prepared to earn a purchase.
At times you might only be in a position to receive a secured loan for a poor credit classic automobile loan, but might have the ability to find an unsecured traditional vehicle loan with a more powerful credit rating. For instance,
if you're searching for a poor credit muscle car loan that you might only be in a position to receive a secured loan.
While doing this, you could even enhance your credit by making your monthly payments in time.
Irrespective of how good your credit might be, classic car loans aren't as simple to find as conventional car loans.
It isn't a large factor in getting you approved because your loan is based on your car title.

Battle with HPV-positive cancer pushed man to focus on life’s positives
Find out how to get the best plumber in Vancouver Washington
To hear Vancouver resident Mike Woodard tell it, it can sometimes sound like he won the lottery, not like he got cancer.
Woodard, 62, prides himself on his positivity and faith, which he utilized along with family and friends to navigate a battle against cancer of the tonsils. Here are just a couple of the examples where Woodard put a positive spin on his battle with HPV-positive cancer.
Woodard said he’s lost the ability to taste sweets, but that’s OK, because, “I can still taste beer,” Woodard said. “It’s a tough experience, but it could have been so much worse.”
Woodard did radiation five times a week for seven weeks, and chemotherapy every Monday for seven weeks, but as he likes to put it, “My job was just to show up.” He even nicknamed his radiation techs “the burn sisters” because of what radiation did to his body.
“I just tried to have fun with it,” Woodard said.
Or how about other upsides that Woodard discovered after his diagnosis? He needed to shed some pounds, he said. With treatment, he did.
“I lost about 50 pounds, but I had weight to lose. So that was good. It was actually a mixed blessing,” he said.
The middle of his neck is so burned from radiation that he doesn’t grow hair in the area anymore.
“I don’t really grow much hair down there now, which is great,” Woodard said. “I shave in about three minutes. It’s not a terrible thing. You got to look at the bright side.”
Woodard did his best to stay positive throughout cancer treatment, but he does admit the experience took its toll in many ways. He says he’s more emotional now and can feel that emotion welling up while talking to his wife Michelle or any of his four kids or three grandkids. Woodard’s mom died last year, so recent times have been trying.
Woodard received his official confirmation of cancer at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. He was diagnosed with cancer in April 2017.
“That was the moment when it really hit me,” Woodard said of the OHSU confirmation. “I went and sat in my car and it was a three-mountain day, where you can see all the mountains. I just sat in the parking lot and cried, and I called my wife, and let her know. It got very real then.”
Woodard had conversations with his wife about finances. He needed to make sure everything was in order if he died.
“When you have to ponder your own mortality in a very serious and real way, it gives you a different perspective,” he said. “This is not a drill.”
Woodard, who works in sales in Portland, came to work one day during treatment feeling like everything was OK.
“I’d go get fried, and then I’d come in the office. I felt pretty good,” Woodard said. “A couple people told me when I fully returned to work, ‘Boy, it was cool that you came in that day, but you looked like hell.’ I thought, ‘Oh, I thought I was doing well.’ ”
Woodard has no evidence of the disease left, and his cancer journey led him to a new calling. He’s volunteering for a Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center patient and family partner council. The council explores ways to improve the patient experience at Legacy.
Woodard, who refers to himself as “a walking medical miracle,” has had nearly a dozen surgeries. He knows his way around a hospital and thinks this volunteer role is truly beneficial, he said. He explained that he knows people overwhelmed by health care, and he wants to change that problem.
“I want to do something with purpose and value,” Woodard said. “Something that helps people.”
Human Papillomavirus Cancers
Dr. Allen Cheng, who specializes in head and neck cancer for Legacy Health, said vaccination is the best preventive measure one can use to protect against HPV-positive cancer.
“The only preventative thing has been to recommend the vaccine,” Cheng said.
HPV, a sexually transmitted disease, can cause genital warts and at least six types of cancer, including almost all cervical cancers and anal cancers as well as cancers in the throat. HPV has hundreds of strains, most of which don’t cause warts or cancer, and most adults will encounter at least one of the more benign strains in their lifetime.
The vaccine, Gardasil 9, protects against nine of the strains most likely to cause cancer. According to statistics provided by Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center spokesperson Kelly Love, there are nearly 40,000 HPV-associated cancers annually in the U.S. About 23,000 cancers are in women and 16,500 are in men.
Clark County has the highest incidence rate in Washington for oropharyngeal cancer — which is cancer in the back of the throat, including the base of tongue and tonsils — in males older than 50, according to stats provided by Legacy. Clark County also has the second-highest death rate for oropharyngeal cancer in Washington.
It’s recommended to administer the vaccine around age 11 before sexual activity starts, but the vaccine can be administered through age 45. The latency period for HPV cancers is prolonged. Someone can contract HPV without noticeable symptoms and not be diagnosed with cancer for a decade or longer, Cheng said. Awareness of the HPV vaccine is rising, but there are still many parents who don’t know about its effectiveness, Cheng said.
Discussing the vaccine with younger children can be tough for parents because it involves talking about sex, but Cheng said these conversations are helpful and important.
“Because this cancer is tied to a sexually transmitted disease, there’s a lot of stigma on both ends, talking about the cancer itself and the prevention methods. So there’s a lot of questions that come out of that that people can very embarrassed or ashamed about,” Cheng said. “Just because you got it doesn’t mean you were especially promiscuous. I would say there’s no evidence to suggest this has anything to do with current behaviors or promiscuity or whatnot.”

Houses We Worship: We Give Praise to 10 Former Churches Currently for Sale
realtor.com
As new churches are built and opened across the U.S., what happens to the decommissioned homes of worship—many of which are historic and architecturally fascinating structures? They go on the selling block! The next chapter for many of these formerly holy places is the transformation into a private home.
Imagine the sense of calm when walking through the front door each night and the sight of beautiful stained-glass windows. Or entertaining friends in acoustically sound communal spaces.
The possibilities are endless. The best part? Asking prices are generally low, so your monthly tithing to your mortgage lender won’t require you to pass the hat. We found 10 former churches for sale and, with one notable exception, you’ll be left with a generous budget for tackling heavenly renovations. Take a walk with us as we peruse these holy opportunities.
48 Madison St, Sag Harbor, NY
Price: $11 million Congregation comments: You’ll need divine intervention if you don’t have deep pockets. This former church in the Hamptons dates to 1835 and is fresh off an architect-led makeover. Dubbed 48 Madison, the 13,000-square-foot building sits on a half-acre lot and features a wide-open floor plan. It’s only a block off Main Street and comes with plans for additional luxury perks, including an infinity pool and indoor spa.
Sag Harbor, NY
realtor.com
———
516 W. Hopkins St, San Marcos, TX
Price: $480,000 Congregation comments: With its fully restored interior and vibrantly colored exterior, this former church built in 1901 is begging for a second chance—perhaps as an art gallery or Airbnb? The two-story residence features a vaulted ceiling in the living room, walk-in closets, and a master suite.
San Marcos, TX
realtor.com
———
Muddy Bayou, MS
Price: $84,500 Congregation comments: While this former Presbyterian church in the Deep South will require tons of TLC and perhaps a little prayer, the bones are solid. Its exterior features red bricks and green shutters, gables, and a bell tower. Built in 1832, it’s on the National Register of Historic Places and was the site of a battle during the Civil War.
Muddy Bayou, MS
realtor.com
———
7065 Hopkins Neck Rd, Royal Oak, MD
Price: $399,000 Congregation comments: This Victorian-era church is now a two-bedroom home with traditional details such as arched windows and a bell tower. Concessions to modern life include a detached two-car garage.
Royal Oak, MD
realtor.com
———
1576 Blair Creek Rd, Little Marsh, PA
Price: $59,900 Congregation comments: Beyond the white exterior and cherry-red doors of this charming former church—built in 1901—lies a sanctuary with two half-baths, as well as room to create three bedrooms—all on a shoestring budget.
Little Marsh, PA
realtor.com
———
136 W. Church St, Cambridge City, IN
Price: $114,900 Congregation comments: Twenty-six stained-glass windows in immaculate condition, plus a fireplace dating to 1935, add historic charm to this former church built in 1856. Recent renovations include a stage with sound system (future concert venue?) and a living space featuring four bedrooms and three baths.
Cambridge City, IN

———
900 N. Duquoin St, Benton, IL
Price: $275,000 Congregation comments: Fan of Mid-Century Modern design? Built in 1965, this building has all the right bones. At nearly 6,000 square feet, the former church now has four en suite bedrooms, a loft-style great room, and cathedral ceilings. A 2.5-acre lot provides plenty of room for expansion.
Benton, IL
realtor.com
———
1757 287 Hwy, Morris, PA
Price: $63,900 Congregation comments: While the listing suggests this could be the perfect “hunting cabin or retreat center,” it could also be one’s home, thanks to the already converted four-bedroom living space on the lower level. The pews in the sanctuary are in pristine condition, and a stream runs nearby for some nature-inspired contemplation.

Price: $109,900 Congregation comments: While the conversion to residential space (the building was formerly an Assembly of God church) is at the buyer’s discretion, there’s abundant space to create a home worthy of praise. The 2,400-square-foot building sits on a 1.18-acre lot and has 2.5 baths. The current kitchenette and two large gathering spaces would be great for hosting parties or just enjoying some capacious serenity.
