Utau! Dai Ryugujou Ending for episode 51, the series finale.
Every ending sequence is original to the episodes, focusing in on the characters the final scene. For the final episode they decided to involve the stage hands dismantling the set as the full cast breaks out into dance. Quite a highlight to the finale
Clip taken from Toei Tokusatsu World’s uploads. As of right now the whole series is available to watch (unsubbed). Playlist here
Episode 1 clips of “Utau! Dai Ryugijou” [Sing! Great Dragon Palace] a Live Action Magical Girl show from 1992.
Since this is the closest I can get to actually watching this show right now, I just wanted to go over a few things. This is mostly for my own reference since there’s absolutely 0 info out there about it (in English), but also to let you know what tokusatsu stuff is out there.
This show is based on the tale of Urashima Taro, where a fisherman saves a turtle & is rewarded by visiting the palace. (our lead kid is also named after him)
Our lead magical girl is Otohime, and she’s one of the only magical girls who’s outfit is a long pants-suit. and also a cape. why don’t more magical girls have long royal capes?
She also plays a flute and has some other knick-knacks to help heal people. Unlike the other magical girls in the “Toei Fushigi Comedy” line I don’t think she fights monsters? She’s just trying to restore mankind’s hearts so her palace can be rebuilt
((wait a minute wasn’t this the same year the underwater-themed Minky Momo anime was airing and it has the same basic plot? coincidence???))
check out those 90′s clothes
Otohime and her parents decide that they’re adopting Taro now and there’s nothing he can do, he’s part of a mermaid family now. At least he can say he’s being tutored by a underwater princess magical girl?
This show is also supposed to be part musical. This clip doesn’t really show it, but its there.
I really like the way they did the “underwater world” scenes here. like one minute it looks like they’re underwater, then he opens the door and he’s back on the street
Taro has some great facial expressions. Who is this kid?
Fun Fact: Otohime is performed by Hiroko Nakayama, who is also the 1st actress to play Sailor Mars/Rei in the Sailor Moon musicals
For the sake of convenience, I’ve decided to put together some playlists for the shows on Toei’s Tokusatsu World. Keep in mind, I don’t have access to some shows being that I’m in the US and right now YouTube has decided that I need to wait to make more playlists. Once they’re done making me wait I’ll update this post. I’ll try to keep these up to date as much as I can.
Toei Tokusatsu World and the Mysterious Comedy Series
In a rare move from the Toei company, and to help people with the current events, Toei has started officially releasing their older tokusatsu (special effects) shows in their new youtube channel Toei Tokusatsu World Official.
Most of these shows have english subtitles, many for the first time ever! And with this cute little ninja fox as the mascot!
There is a lot of variety even if the Sentai series are off-limits due to copyright shenanigans. There are several classics like Android Kikaider and Robot Detective, many of the Metal Heroes series like Jaspion and Winspector, oddities like the somewhat Ultraman-related Captain Ultra, and there’s even an entry from the Kamen Rider series: the gritty 90s movie Shin Kamen Rider: Prologue.
But not only that! The channel is also very generous to the fans of cuteness!
Toei has had several branches of Tokusatsu shows througout the decades, the most popular are easily Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Metal Heroes, but there is another one that ran from the early 80s to the early 90s, called Toei Fushigi Comedy Series, fushigi meaning “mysterious”, wich focused on cute monsters, cute robots and cute girl superheroes!
They are cute, they are weird, they are full of puppets, and they are highly recommended to check out!
Here’s a list of the shows available, I don’t know wich are blocked by region (to be updated):
Robot 8-Chan [ep 1, ep 2] (robot)
Batten Robomaru [ep 1, ep 2] (robot)
Pettonton [ep 1, ep 2] (monster)
Nemulin [ep 1, ep 2] (monster)
Kamitaman [ep 1, ep 2] (monster)
Marin Gumi [ep 1, ep 2] (superheroine)
Hard Gumi [ep 1, ep 2] (superheroine)
Magical Girl Chukana Paipai [ep 1, ep 2] (superheroine)
Magical Girl Chukana Ipanema [ep 1, ep 2] (superheroine)
Poitrine [ep 1, ep 2] (superheroine)
Thutmose [ep 1, ep 2] (superheroine)
Utau! Dairyugujo [ep 1, ep 2] (superheroine)
All the shows available have at minimun two episodes each as of this writing. The channel is scheluded to keep uploading more episodes of different shows as time goes on, but keep in mind that the more popular series are more likely to get episodes sooner, so if you end up liking any of these entries then consider supporting them with views, likes, comments, sharing etc!
Just keep in mind that all these shows are decades old and come from a country that for many is foreign, meaning they may have some moments and jokes that are not to some/many people’s tastes, like depictions of violence as funny.
With that said, and of course, this being a Godzilland blog I inmediatly directed my atention to the three “monster” shows: the ET-inspired alien Pettenton, the sleepy fairy Nemulin and the mischievous god Kamitaman:
