17 key tips for milling applications
Milling is the process of holding a blank in place and using a high-speed rotating milling cutter to travel over the blank to cut out the desired shape and features.
Conventional milling is more often used to mill simple shapes/features such as contours and slots. CNC milling machines can perform machining of complex shapes and features.
Milling and boring machining centers can perform 3-axis or multi-axis milling and boring for machining, molds, inspection tools, tire tools, thin-walled complex surfaces, artificial prostheses, blades, etc. In the selection of CNC milling and processing content, should give full play to the advantages and key role of CNC milling machine.
In the actual production of milling processing, including machine settings, workpiece clamping, tool selection and other aspects of application skills, this issue for you to briefly summarize the 17 points of milling processing, each point is worthy of in-depth mastery.
1. Power capacity
Check the power capacity and machine rigidity to ensure that the machine can use the required milling tool diameter.
2. Workpiece stability

4. Selecting the correct milling cutter tooth pitch

Use smooth milling whenever possible.
9. Part Considerations
Workpiece material and configuration, as well as the quality requirements of the surface to be machined.
10. Insert material selection
Select the slot type and material according to the type of workpiece material and type of application.
11. Vibration damping milling cutters
For longer overhangs exceeding 4 times the tool diameter, the tendency to vibrate becomes more pronounced and the use of vibration damping tools can significantly improve productivity.
12. Main deflection angle
Select the most suitable main deflection angle.
13. Milling tool diameter
Select the correct diameter according to the width of the workpiece.
14. Milling tool position
Position the milling cutter correctly. 15.

It can be seen that by circular plunge, the chip thickness during retraction is always zero, thus enabling higher feeds and longer tool life.
16. Coolant
Coolant is used only when deemed necessary. As a rule, milling is better executed without coolant.

The maximum size of the processed plate is 2500mmx1500mm, and X, Y, C, V1, V2, Z1, Z2, W1, W2, P are controlled in 10 axes.
The C-type pressure arm structure is adopted, and the end adopts the crank linkage mechanism to drive the presser foot to press and hold the plate, so as to realize the feeding mode of moving and rotating the plate.

The Salter Aero Rear Wing Riser raises the vehicle’s OEM spoiler an additional 4 inches, dramatically improving the overall look of the GT4 while also improving rearview visibility. Both the wing support and lower support covers are produced from aircraft-grade 6061-T6 billet aluminum and CNC-machined using advanced milling machines. They are then bead blasted to a fine, smooth finish to eliminate any milling marks. Lastly, the pieces are hard anodized to deliver a durable and scratch-resistant matte black finish.
When installing the Salter Aero V1 Wing Risers on your Porsche Cayman GT4, you will not need to cut, drill, or make any permanent modifications to the vehicle. What’s more, everything can be seamlessly brought back to the stock setup if needed.

AN EXTREME COMPOSITE FOR AN EXTREME COMMISSION
An extreme composite for an extreme commission
What started with the industry’s first carbon-titanium composite cased watch earlier this year has led to our latest creation—the V2+ RED CC. Once again, we have teamed up with Fatcarbon to explore the limits of composites and create a visually striking and very light material.
As far as we know the V2+ RED CC is the world’s first watch featuring a carbon-ceramic composite case.
REINFORCED VAULT
ANOTHER LAYER OF PROTECTION FOR YOUR TIME
As a VAULT watch is essentially a vault for your wrist protecting your precious time, the V2+ RED CC receives some extra protection in the form of a grade two titanium hour disc replacing the iconic sapphire disc used in the V1 models. Designed by Laurent Auberson the hour disc enhances the readability of the hours while incorporating the V-Logo and using a honeycomb structure to ensure rigidity of the disc while also making it as light as possible. The 0.3mm disc was laser cut by our partner Lastec before Xenoprint applied red Super LumiNova to the hour-indicating triangle. Last but not least, Bernhard Zwinz hand grained the disc to give it the technical look we wanted to achieve.

THE CHALLENGING ROAD TO SUCCESS
We knew from the start that our vision for this new composite was extremely ambitious and our gut feeling proved to be right. As our case is curved in both directions, we wanted to create a composite with layers that mimicked the curvature of the case. Our partner Fatcarbon had not only to rethink his composite manufacturing process but also produce special tooling to create the desired composite. Weeks of hand-laminating layer by layer of carbon and ceramic and numerous iterations later, composite block 21 was created, which became the case for the final watch.
40+ HOURS
CNC MILLING ONE CASE 
Our partners at RGB X-Tech, who managed to manufacture the extreme carbon-titanium composite used for the V1+ Cti, were tasked once again to machine the case for the V2+ RED CC. It took three attempts and over 120 hours of CNC milling to create the final case. As René Gschwend, CEO of RGB X-Tech, stated, this was by far the most challenging project he has ever worked on.

Using a composite never before used in the watch industry was equally exciting as it was challenging. Thanks to our visionary patron and our incredible team, we once again managed to pull off a world`s first in the industry by creating a carbon-ceramic composite case. We invested a lot of time in extensive testing to make this daring vision become a reality, in doing so pushing the boundaries once again.
MOVEMENT
UPGRADED V01+ CALIBRE
Unlike other calibres use of traditional base-plates, the unique V01+ movement designed and produced by Andreas Strehler and his company Uhrteil utilises a skeletonised, black rhodium-plated and pearl-blasted central main plate. The central main plate is not screwed to the mono-cage II but held in place by six steel rollers and three springs, enabling the whole movement to unidirectionally rotate 360° while the time is set. The fact that the whole calibre is float-mounted also protects it from shocks.
The backside of the automatic V01+ movement now feature two floating grade two titanium engraving bridges which have been designed and engineered by Laurent Auberson and Marc Jenni, produced by Lastec and hand finished by Bernhard Zwinz. The bridges where made to display the brand name and the reference as the composite material could not be laser engraved.
As the grade two titanium hour disc is lighter than the previously used sapphire disc on the V1 models the power reserve has been increased to circa 55 hours.
Made-to-Measure Strap
A VERY PERSONAL TOUCH
To create the perfect strap we once again teamed up with master strap maker Mirea Marian who created a beautiful made-to-measure ostrich leg leather strap to perfectly complement the V2+ RED CC. VAULT straps are far from the ordinary and require a lot of skill and time as the connection to the case requires seamlessly incorporating a high-precision grade five titanium insert manufactured by Ecoprts into the strap.

6 Ways to Save Money on Your Next Custom Tradeshow Exhibit
Let’s face it, when you’re shopping for a custom tradeshow exhibit, the dollar signs can often start spinning so much your head soon follows. Things can get expensive in the tradeshow world, so it makes sense to figure out ways to save money along the way.
Start with the premise that the reason custom tradeshow exhibits can be expensive for any number of reasons. First, there are a lot of people involved: designers, account executives, fabricators, detailers, crate builders and so on. Things are usually hand-crafted in the exhibit world in the sense that each piece has human hands on it several times. Even if a CNC machine is programmed to cut metal or wood, a human still has to make it happen. Building an exhibit is not mass manufacturing. Its individually crafted items designed and built to look spectacular.
How to keep the costs down? Here are six ways:
Consider starting with a kit. Many exhibit builders offer a number of kits to keep costs lower. With a kit, the design is generally pre-determined. But with a good kit, there are always opportunities to customize the kit. In a sense, you’re creating a hybrid between custom and ‘catalog’ designs. Shop the company’s website for kits that might give you a good starting point.
Know exactly what you want and get nothing more. A custom exhibit is great in that, as part of the design process, you can identify what you need – exactly. If you need just three shelves for product display, don’t go for four or five or six. Those can usually be added later. Need a charging table? There are always low budget options that are not custom but can be custom-branded.
Work with lightweight materials. While there still are many heavy wood-built exhibits that appear at shows – usually for a great reason because it’s part of the brand – more exhibits are moving to lightweight materials such as aluminum frames and fabric graphics. Not only are the materials lighter, which means they ship for less, but fabric graphics fold up and ship in a smaller space.
Rent furniture. If you rent the same thing show after show, it’ll add up and eventually you’ll end up paying more for the furniture than it you owned it. But keep in mind, but owning it, you have to pay to ship it, pay to store it, and pay to replace it. And furniture that you own will get scuffed, nicked and damaged over time. With rental furniture, you get brand new or like-new items, you get to choose from the latest styles, and you don’t have to worry about shipping or storing.
Don’t rush it. By planning ahead for a custom designed and fabricated exhibit, you’re avoiding rush fees, last minute glitches and a calendar that is rushing at you like a runaway train. Once you’ve decided on a new exhibit, sit down with your exhibit provider and work out a realistic timeline so that all parties know what’s expected of them and when.
Preview the exhibit. It’s pretty common to do this, but I have seen occasions where it’s not done, and it’s led to having to make expensive fixes on the show floor or have revised graphics printed at a rush fee and shipped using an expensive overnight service. Previews are generally designed to make sure everything works like it’s supposed to, to make sure all the graphics fit, and nothing is left out. Even if you can’t be there, make sure you have lots of photos of the preview.
Whether you’re looking for a custom exhibit, a modular exhibit from a catalog or something in between, most exhibit houses are willing to discuss your budget and what you can realistically expect to get for your money.

Methods to improve the accuracy of plane milling
The machining accuracy of mechanical parts mainly depends on multiple factors such as workpiece, cutting tool, machine tool and machining technology. The accuracy of plane milling can be ensured by the following measures
Avoiding vibration
Consider the causes of milling vibration and take the following measures to control and avoid it Select a process system with sufficient rigidity, such as sufficient machine power, rigid fixtures, reasonable structural dimensions of the milling machine, reasonable clamping method, clamping force, etc.
Before milling, attention should be paid to the reasonable adjustment of the clearance of all parts of the machine tool and locking the unused feed direction during machining. Reasonable selection of cutting angle of the tool and milling parameters.
 
Selecting advanced milling cutters
Choose various advanced indexable milling cutters and integral milling cutters to improve chip evacuation and control undercutting and overcutting.
Before milling, measure the dimensional accuracy of the milling cutter, shape accuracy and tooth accuracy of the forming milling cutter, and double check the grinding quality after the milling.
Test the mounting accuracy after installation to ensure the rotational accuracy of the milling cutter after installation.
Select a fixture with corresponding accuracy
For the clamping of small, thin and easily deformed workpieces, set the clamping method in advance and reasonably select the clamping position, clamping force and the form of clamping device.
The slitting head or rotary table selected for workpieces with high slitting accuracy must be pre-tested for slitting accuracy, and optical slitting devices must be used if necessary.
Special fixtures should be used for batch processing, and milling allowances should be reserved for the first machining of the part to test fixture accuracy.
For the clamping of large workpieces, the clamping system should be designed in advance and the clamping position should be set to prevent deformation so as to keep the machining position in the correct machining position.
Selective refining method
Plane milling can use powerful step milling machine to improve machining efficiency and accuracy. If the method appearing in machining can be used, cutting should be done as much as possible.

The Pulsejet-Powered Weltmeister Fictional Experimental Motorcycle

The Weltmeister Fictional Experimental Motorcycle
The Idea
What if the Germans had built experimental pulsejet-powered motorcycles in the mid-1930s – how would these have been made and what would they have looked like?
In the 1940s there were already manufacturers of pulsejet motorcycles both in France (the Veloreacteur) and in USA. Even though none of them became a commercial success some prototypes and production models were produced. Having this in mind it’s easy to imagine that the Germans, who invented pulsejet technology, could have been producing experimental pulsejet motorcycles for land speed records in the 1930s.
Already in the late 1920s Frits Von Opel had some success with his rocket-powered Opel motorcycle and it’s very likely that other companies would have taken up the challenge. One of those companies could potentially have tried using the pulsejet engine that was developed for the V1 flying bomb during WW2.
If so and if there really were a few experimental pulsejet motorcycles produced we will probably never find out because many of these things where lost forever during the war.
Let’s just say – even thought its just a hypothetical – that there were a few pulsejet motorcycles built in the mid-1930s – what would they would look like? The frame would probably be very similar to a DKW E200 with rigid rear and a girder fork up front. With engines like the later type VI engines, just downsized, board track racer handlebars, and with a minimalistic design – it would have really been  a speed record machine for that time.
This bike seen here in the pictures is a materialisation of  “what if the Germans had built one…….” and it was built over the past two years as a fictional historic replica.
The Manufacturing Process
This motorcycle is designed to give the impression of a motorcycle developed and built in the 1930s, using the materials and techniques of that era.
This meant a lot of manual handwork and no use of laser cutting, CNC milling and so on. Choice of material is also based on what was available at that time, especially the wide use of aluminium, the leather seat, and the Bakelite contact breaker all give an authentic look and feel.
Also, the absence of electrical wires was very important for me – only ordinary Bowden cables are used for controlling everything.
The Test Ride
A couple of weeks ago we went to a local vintage land speed event just to be a part of the motor show.
We had some success, but things are a bit more complicated with a pulsejet propulsion motorcycle.
The process of starting the engines is a bit tricky and several attempts are needed, but when the engines starts, even its an idle (only 25% of the full 500 to 550 Newton meters) it’s extremely noisy and the motorcycle starts immediately to pull forward.
Opening the throttle from idle to full gives a very solid feeling of going from 25% to 100% – not only does the trust feel powerful but it’s accompanied with the huge increase in engine noise, the feeling is definitely not like riding an ordinary motorcycle.
However – we only had the possibility to ride on a bumpy grass field and with not much space, so it was not possibly at all to test the motorcycles full potential.

The Swiss independent brand Vault Watches released today a new timepiece: the VAULT V1+ CTi. For those unfamiliar with the Vault Watches name, have a look at these articles I have written for Deployant: the first announcement, the factory visit and the official Swiss launch event. Today the brand announced today the Vault V1 in a new interesting material – carbon and titanium. Check below the official press release.
Time is a personal matter. Even more so your own timepiece that treasures the hours and minutes of your day. That’s why customisation has always been part of VAULT’s core mission. But this time, we have taken it to another level. Imagine you’re able to choose not just the colours engravings and materials, but commission a bespoke case material. Sounds unbelievable? We know. But we made it happen.
The V1+ CTi is characterised by a unique connection of material: carbon and titanium. The carbon-titanium composite is one-of-a-kind and has been developed specifically for VAULT. We pursued this idea together with a client. Our goal was to unite the unique features of both materials. As far as we know, no watchmaker has used a composite of carbon and titanium to create a case before.
VAULT V1+ CTi
Time is precious. That’s why VAULT doesn’t play around when it comes to time. We take as much time as needed for the things we value. Case in point is our new V1+ CTi. The handmade manufacture of our newest model has been the most complex so far.
Our signature carbon-titanium composite was developed by our partner Fatcarbon. The very thin pre-preg carbon layers and fine titanium powder were alternately hand-layered and baked under pressure to form a solid piece of material.
RGB X-Tech shaped this thrilling yet complex material into our watch case. As both components, carbon and titanium, make different demands to the manufacturing, finding the right tool was crucial. A specialised CNC milling machine did the job. So far so good. But do you know how long that took? A mesmerising 32 hours of machine running time!
To finish off the V1+ CTi, we optimised the design, re-engineered the hour gear transmission and teamed up with the talented watchmaker Marc Jenni. He developed a new rotor that is lighter and increases the wearing comfort.

Good things take time. The VAULT V1+ CTi characterises that more than any model has ever before. Going from a simple idea to our signature connection of material and finally to a brand-new watch took several hands and a lot of time. EACH WATCH IS CHARACTERISED BY ITS INDIVIDUALITY Courtesy of its distinctive method of operation, the watch displays a different face whenever the time is reset, thereby enabling each owner of a Vault watch to wear a timepiece which is unique and individual.
THE WATCH MOVEMENT IS AUTONOMOUS The watch is set by rotating the complete movement.
THE WATCH DIAL IS ROTATABLE VAULT creates the only watch to utilize the ground-breaking HOUR GEAR TRANSMISSION (HGT), with its uniquely rotating dial, to indicate the hours.
THE WAY IN WHICH THE TIME IS DISPLAYED IS NOVEL The innovative watch dial displays the time in a totally unconventional way because the numbers indicating the hours are moved to a different position whenever the time is reset.
THE TIME IS SET IN AN ENTIRELY UNIQUE WAY The hours and minutes are set by rotating the movement and the dial at different speeds.
