If anybody in the Richmond area needs a side hustle, VCU's art program is hiring nude models for the drawing classes. I took those classes and I can tell ya those models don't have it too tough, as long as you're willing to strip down and hold still for twenty minutes while college kids struggle to draw you
(They actively want diverse ages, races, body types, &c.)

sorry ahead of time if this is a weird Q, i've been a follower for some time! i went to VCUarts but i dropped out when covid hit and for personal reasons i'm probably not going to go back even though i'd really like to, so i've been piecing together my own art education. were there any subjects/projects you were exposed to in the program that changed the way you approach art? one of the last classes i was able to take was a typography class and it opened my eyes to a design world i hadn't considered. you have such strong graphic design skills and it'd be really cool to hear what helped you develop!
Hey, thank you! and not at all - i totally get that, and i love talking about design lol. i rly enjoyed the gdes program but i kinda wish i could take it again now, i dont think i appreciated it as much as i could have when i was there 😭. as is life ig. i think def the biggest thing that i learned was about using typography and trying to develop an eye for it. im bad at the math parts of it but usually i can eyeball the negative space well enough. basically getting used to considering typography as graphic parts of a composition as opposed to just placing text on top of a graphic.
i think whats honestly most helpfully informed my own design work is honestly just trying to look at and collect as much "cool stuff" as possible. i follow a lot of random design instagram accounts (tbh u can just look thru the graphic design tags on insta and pinterest) even if i dont necessarily respect the artist (LMAO) even if they just do one thing rly interesting. also following some more experimental and a lot of art book/publication/zine accounts because theyre def gonna have some of the cooler graphic design work for print format especially.
one thing about insta (and tiktok tbh) thats both annoying and helpful is that with all the promoted posts you end up seeing a lot of whats currently "trending" for design, if ur following enough design accounts. like the truck sticker i just did on twitter is actually using an effect i learned from an insta reel that popped up on my feed lol.
one assignment from a class i rly appreciated was doing "make-a-days" where you basically made an image every day. didnt matter the quality or what it was but you just had to make something. it was good for experimenting and trying new things. also just picking a theme and making fake graphics/posters for my friends comics or something i liked.
i would also say that my personal biggest strength is that im just rly good at the programs, so i can ideate really quickly and its easier to figure out how to get a certain effect i want, and specifically how to copy a style I saw from something cool i saw somewhere :) outside my more bolder lines and compositional style (i dont have enough patience for rendering 99% of the time) i have a pretty flexible style because i usually have an end product or look in mind. also im usually inspired by other artists i follow online a lot too. but honestly just take the time to rly get used to ur program of choice and what effects settings and filters it has.
biggest advice is collect as many cool images as you can find and figure out what you like across them and how you can copy it for whatever ur making.

insane feeling to be a freshman sadly sitting in ur dorm the day u return from thanksgiving break, brainrotting over doctor who, stumbling across the most gorgeous amazing mouth watering doctor who fanart u’ve ever seen, clicking on the profile, and discovering that the artist graduated from the same school ur currently in the middle of losing ur mind over. go rams etcetera. i LOVE vcuarts! (<—i say at gunpoint)
🐏🐏🐏
Haha what a small world lolol!
I feel you on the slog that art foundations is but I promise you once you’re in your major it improves a bunch (well I can only speak for communication arts lol) at least we all have doctor who to help cope through it till then.
Thank you for your kind words! Good luck and have a good time at VCU, I def miss it even with all the annoying aspects lol!

Mr. Lawnchair and The Star Night Light
I think Lawnchair is a good place to start because, to many people's agreeance, this character may be one of my worst. Lawnchair was a guy I talked to in the winter of 2024, and I met him through the photography department at VCUarts (don't wanna fully dox myself, but look it up. You'll see the breed of guy I'm talking about).
Lawnchair is tall, dark, handsome, mysterious, and clean-cut (again, to many people's agreeance, maybe too clean-cut in some ways), firmly riding into any room on his customized cruiser bike. Lawnchair is an asshole, always has been and always will be. Even before I knew him as Lawnchair, this guy was just a stick in the mud. If you ever watched Charlie Brown, I imagine Lawnchair as when Charlie Brown has a constant raincloud stuck over his head. For example, the last time we spoke, I asked him how his day was, to which he replied: "horrible. just found out I have nine cavities. I hate the dentist."
Yep, that's definitely the dentist's fault.
Lawnchair earned his title from an incredibly shining moment of his strange, negative view of life. On Valentine's Day 2024, I woke up to see I had received a text from Lawnchair (at this point, he was referred to by his government name, which is way less fitting). Per the holiday, I assume this message would be a romantic scrawl of his appreciation of our time together. Of course, as I wouldn't be including the story if that was the case, was not what the message included.
"We can't see each other anymore...I have an addictive personality, and when it comes to you, I fold into you like a lawnchair."
??? Obviously annoyed with the content of the message, I was already fuming in a similarly cartoonish manor to his constant raincloud. And then, I was more mad that he included some pathetic attempt at poetry with the lawnchair bit. From that point on, he would always be known to me and my group of friends, as Lawnchair.
The most prized piece of my thesis show was a photo of me dumpster diving, wearing a bright red jacket. On top of the image, engraved into the glass, were the words:
"Contorted roots of kudzu splintered and split through me as I'm sat on a lawnchair near the I-81."
An obvious hit to the lawnchair bit, I was hoping this would bust the metaphorical cheap plastic seat out of the now-distant Lawnchair. The night goes on - and nothing. Not a word.
The next day, however, I opened Instagram to see Lawnchair had posted on his story, which I immediately opened (duh). To both my horror and absolute delight, my lawnchair photo was staring back at me through the screen. I had won, but I had also so obviously lost.
With each guy that I can, I'll end the story with a clipping from an angry and disgustingly cringy detail of my account at the time. Here is one for Lawnchair:
"I was a sweet sip on corn syrup, an embarrassing and awkward transaction of sex with the lights on and keeping things a secret so your other girlfriends wouldn't know. Hanging above me, your star night light laughs at me for shitting where I eat."
XOXO,

series 1 interview form now live
Tumblr media
Role-identity is based on both the actions a user consciously takes to present themselves and the inherent shaping of one’s self into a format presentable online. For example, you can choose a display name, but what glyphs and how many characters are allowed in it shapes your ultimate decision. And then that display name is used by yourself and others, and your persona becomes attached to it. There are infinite points of shaping that occur on the web, where one uses the digital space to enhance a part of themselves in a way that couldn’t be managed in person, or where one is limited by the specifications of the digital format and the templates of popular social media. The more one exists on the internet, a new mythology of identity occurs through evolving usernames, interests, aesthetics, friends, and information that begets itself unto a user, at a speed and consistency unprecedented to the offline. The “real” world cannot often keep up with the online identity, in its presentation, perception, and feedback loop.
The persona that takes space on the internet, that is acted out and translated through text and image and emoji and reshares, is entirely decided and curated by a living person who may live an entirely different type of life in the flesh. It is long form performance, collaboration, lie, and honesty beyond what one might ever be able to live outside the screen. I aim to explore that constructed role-identity through interview and collaboration with people who see a dividing line between their habitus on the internet, and off it.
Please fill out this questionnaire to be considered for an interview, or share with friends who have an interesting story.
