Transforming Lives: CSR Initiatives Making a Difference
Balancing the Books: Animals’ Rightful Share in the CSR Pie
In our journey as a species, animals have been steadfast companions, aiding us in survival and progress. Yet, amidst our strides, we’ve often overlooked their plight. In the realm of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), where giving back to society is paramount, animal welfare remains a neglected cause. It’s time to reconsider our priorities and extend our empathy towards the creatures that have contributed so much to our well-being.
Since ancient times, animals have stood by us, from helping us hunt to providing sustenance. However, the scale of their exploitation for our benefit is staggering, raising ethical concerns.
The health of our planet, animals, and humans is intricately intertwined. Yet, our actions, particularly in animal agriculture, contribute significantly to environmental degradation and pose threats to human health.
Industrialization has ushered in an era of mass exploitation, subjecting animals to unimaginable suffering in factory farms and threatening wildlife habitats.
Growing evidence suggests that animals experience emotions and suffer as we do. Despite this, our practices often disregard their welfare, perpetuating needless suffering.
Amidst the challenges, there’s hope. Animal charities and advocates tirelessly work to alleviate suffering, while individual donors and CSR present opportunities for change.
Despite its mandate, CSR often overlooks animal welfare. It’s time for a more inclusive approach, channeling resources towards compassionate initiatives.
Our choices matter. Opting for products and services that prioritize animal welfare not only aligns with our values but also promotes human health and environmental sustainability.
As we navigate an ever-changing world, let’s not forget the beings who share it with us. Embracing compassion towards animals isn’t just a moral obligation but a pathway to a more equitable and harmonious existence for all.

San Diego Unified Has Lost Nearly 12,000 Students in Past Decade
For over two decades, California’s public school enrollment has been on a decline. After peaking at 6.4 million in 2004, enrollment tumbled all the way down to 5.8 million in 2023, fueled in part by a significant pandemic-era uptick in the rate of enrollment decline. Between 2015 and 2023 alone, the state lost nearly 390,000 students, or about 6 percent of enrollment.
San Diego Unified, the second-largest district in California, has fared even worse. Over the same period, the district lost more than 11,300 students, or about 10.5 percent of its total enrollment.
As KPBS recently reported, at a recent budget workshop, district leaders announced they’re projecting to lose even more students in the coming year. According to figures included in a budget presentation, the district projects it will lose 741 students between the current school year and the next. If those numbers prove true it will mean the district has lost 12,500 students, or about 11.6 percent of its total enrollment, over the past decade.
Luckily for district leaders, the declines have slowed in recent years from a high of 3,165 between the 2019 to 2020 school years. But unluckily it doesn’t seem there are a whole lot of reasons to be optimistic that the trend will reverse course.
For one, the district was already reaping the benefits of the launch of universal transitional kindergarten, a new grade for 4-year-olds that injected an entirely new group of students into the district. That new group of students blunted the larger trend of enrollment decline, but the declines still kept coming, and there are no longer any new groups of students waiting in the wings.
Secondly, the larger demographic trends are still moving the wrong way. Birth rates continue to decline, and when people have fewer kids there are simply fewer kids to fill schools.
Lastly, places like San Diego, where the cost of living is prohibitively high, have been particularly hard hit by enrollment declines and population dips. Between 2022 and 2023, for example, nearly 31,000 people moved out of San Diego County. That was the county’s largest outflow in three decades, save for the first year of the pandemic.
During a recent interview on the VOSD Podcast, Board President Cody Petterson, who represents sub-district C, said similar cost of living patterns are playing out within the district.
“You can see it in my sub-district, which is the coast. It’s fairly affluent – Point Loma, Mission Bay, La Jolla and University City. I have 13,000 resident students,” Petterson said.
Trustee Richard Barrera, who represents central-southern San Diego neighborhoods like North Park, Barrio Logan and parts of City Heights, has 31,00 resident students. Those disparities in the number of school-aged kids living in each sub-district exist despite the fact that both sub-districts have similar total populations.
“There’s just no kids. It’s very difficult … young families can’t afford to live there,” Petterson said.
San Diego Unified’s elevated rate of enrollment decline in comparison with the state level also stands in stark contrast to what the county as a whole has seen. From 2015 to 2023, the county saw a 5.2 percent decline in enrollment. That’s not only less than the state’s rate of enrollment decline over that same period, it’s less than the rate San Diego Unified saw.
That’s a big problem because the more students San Diego Unified loses, the less funding it gets – and the district is already strapped with a $112 million deficit. It’s also perplexing because despite the well-publicized scandals the district has weathered, its students have performed fairly well over the years, at least compared to state and national averages.
Ultimately, San Diego Unified’s enrollment dilemma may be partly because, compared to other areas in the county and state, the entire city of San Diego is like Petterson’s sub-district C – unaffordable to young families.  *Reposted article from the VOSD by Jakob McWhinney on February 12, 2025

Here are some photos I did for a recent photo essay on the new Amazon Tijuana, Mexico warehouse and continuing construction in the surrounding neighborhoods were they are installed for @voiceofsandiego — The neighborhood of Colonia Nueva Esperanza, along the dirt roads of Cañón del Padre, once a farming area in Tijuana, Mexico, is now home to a warehouse owned by one of the wealthiest companies in the world, Amazon. Its presence has invoked controversy and questions over what it means for a multinational company to set itself in an area that is vastly underdeveloped, marginalized and historically ignored.  To read more go to VOSD’s website: shorturl.at/qyHKN — #onassignment #photojournalism #fotoperiodismo #documentaryphotography #environmentalportraits #portrait #portraitphotography #retrato #tijuana #tijuanamexico #mexico #amazon #amazonmexico #sandiego #everydayeverywhere #everydaylafrontera #everydayusa #everydaysocialjustice #everydaylatinamerica #everydaymexico #edca #reportagespotlight (at Tijuana B.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUL0DZqp8ME/?utm_medium=tumblr

Case Studies: The Top Dog-Friendly Companies and What You Can Learn From Them
Many companies have embraced the trend of allowing dogs in the workplace, but a few have stood out for their innovative approaches and the resulting benefits to their company culture. This blog post explores case studies from some of the leading dog-friendly companies and extracts key lessons for others looking to follow in their footsteps.
Amazon – Setting the Gold Standard for a Dog-Friendly Workplace
Tumblr media
At Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, dogs have been a staple for years. With more than 1,000 dogs on campus on any given day, the company ensures that all employee needs are considered.
Facilities and Amenities: Amazon provides doggy water stations, a dog park, and even has a special “Dogs@Amazon” team dedicated to supporting the community of employees with pets.
Lesson Learned: Providing dedicated spaces and amenities for pets can significantly enhance the integration of dogs into daily work life without disrupting the business environment.
Google – Prioritizing Pet Wellbeing and Employee Satisfaction
Google is another top player that allows dogs in the workplace. The company is known for its “Dooglers” (Google dogs) and maintains a comprehensive pet policy that supports both pets and their owners.
Policy and Infrastructure: Google’s code of conduct clearly states that bringing a dog to work is a privilege that requires responsibility. Facilities are designed to ensure pets are safe and comfortable while allowing employees who prefer not to engage with pets to have their space.
Lesson Learned: Clear policies and respectful boundaries are crucial in maintaining harmony in a diverse working environment.
Ben & Jerry’s – Encouraging Fun and Responsibility
Tumblr media
Ben & Jerry’s has long been recognized for its laid-back and inclusive office culture, which naturally extends to dogs. The company allows employees to bring their dogs to work, seeing them as a source of joy and relaxation.
Culture Integration: Dogs are fully integrated into the company’s culture, participating in meetings and office events. Ben & Jerry’s sees this as a way to reduce stress and encourage a playful work environment.
Lesson Learned: Integrating pets into the broader company culture can enhance employee happiness and workplace cohesion.
Etsy – Supporting Community and Creativity
Tumblr media
Etsy not only allows dogs in their offices but actively promotes a sense of community among pet owners and their dogs. This aligns perfectly with their creative and community-oriented brand image.
Community Building: Etsy organizes pet-related events and provides resources for pet owners, including an internal social network for pet advice sharing among employees.
Lesson Learned: Building a community around shared interests, such as pet ownership, can foster a supportive work environment and deepen employee connections.
Salesforce – Providing Comprehensive Pet Benefits
Tumblr media
Salesforce offers one of the most comprehensive pet benefits packages, including health insurance for dogs and other pets. This approach highlights the company’s overall commitment to employee benefits and well-being.
Pet Benefits: Beyond allowing dogs at work, Salesforce offers benefits that acknowledge pets as integral parts of their employees’ families.
Lesson Learned: Extending employee benefits to include pets can significantly enhance job satisfaction and loyalty among pet-owning employees.
These leading companies demonstrate that when implemented thoughtfully, dog-friendly policies can significantly enhance employee satisfaction and corporate culture. By learning from these examples, other businesses can develop policies that not only accommodate dogs but also foster a more joyful and productive work environment
With Voice Of Stray Dogs (VOSD), learn to redesign your workspace into a dog-approved haven.

A Push for More School Funding
On a gloomy Tuesday morning San Diego County educators gathered on a noisy stretch of Main Street in front of Perkins K-8. The educators, many of whom were clad in red, were member of the unions representing teachers at both San Diego Unified and National City’s National Elementary School District.
They were there to announce the launch of a coordinated statewide contract campaign called “We Can’t Wait.” The primary priorities for the 32 California districts involved are securing higher teacher pay, increased staffing at schools (including more mental health support staff), providing more resources to families and ending the yearly layoff cycle common in many districts.
“While we have pushed our district to establish a budget where a good chunk … is going towards our schools and towards those working closest with students, it’s not enough,” San Diego Education Association President Kyle Weinberg told the cameras gathered at Perkins. “Our schools are understaffed. Our teachers can’t afford to live in the communities that we serve, and our students continue to be destabilized by budget cuts.”
Those demands probably don’t sound controversial at first blush, but given public education in California has been under extreme financial strain since the expiration of Covid relief funds, they are likely unrealistic. San Diego Unified, for example, is facing down a roughly $112 million budget deficit. That comes less than two years after granting staff a 15 percent raise that likely contributed to that deficit.
That bleak fiscal reality is partly why Weinberg and his union compatriots’ push isn’t just about negotiations at the local level. Part of the motivation to flex the power of the 77,000 educators across the 32 districts taking part in the coordinated campaign is to put pressure on leaders in Sacramento to put more money into education.
“We need a coordinated statewide approach coming together as unions, families and community organizations to send a message that Sacramento cannot ignore,” Weinberg said. “It is criminal that in the wealthiest state in the country we are still funding schools below the national average. We need to look at new revenue sources at the state level.”
What Weinberg and other union representatives want to see is the state focused on taxing corporations and using that money to increase education funding.  Advocates hope the unprecedented coordination of this campaign will move the needle.
The jury is out on whether the state will bite, but given the distraction-rich political environment, it doesn’t seem wise to hold your breath.  *Reposted article from the VOSD by Jakob McWhinney on February 5, 2025
What We’re Writing (Eye On SD Unified)
•    Only 13 percent of San Diego County schools had higher English and math test scores last year than they did during the 2018-19 school year. Those results highlight the bleak post-pandemic recovery at many schools. Here’s why leaders at three schools think they fared better.
•    The latest National Assessment of Educational Progress test scores have been released, and San Diego Unified fared comparatively well. Even so, the test, which is administered to students nationwide, showed little progress for local students. The big difference is that their performance didn’t worsen like that of students at many other districts.
•    San Diego Unified opened its first infant care facility late last year. The facility, a Montessori center at the district’s Logan Memorial Educational Campus, may be a sign of things to come.
•    More than 18 months ago, San Diego Unified pitched the city of San Diego leaders on a plan: The district would offer up its former Central Elementary campus for a safe parking lot for homeless families if the city could get a contractor to run it. Despite the fanfare, that project now looks dead.

Trends & influences of the Indian Pet Market – by Rakesh Shukla,  VOSD™ Corporation
Overview
The Indian pet market has experienced significant growth over the past five years, driven by increasing pet ownership, urbanization, rising disposable incomes, and changing social attitudes towards pets. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the companion animal market in India, with particular focus on dogs, detailing the primary segments, market size, trends, key drivers, and influencing phenomena.
Market Segments
The Indian pet market can be divided into several primary segments:
Pet Food
Veterinary Care
Grooming and Accessories
Pet Pharmaceuticals
Pet Services
Pet Food
The pet food segment is the largest in the Indian pet market. According to the “Euromonitor International Report,” the pet food market in India was valued at approximately INR 2,500 crore in 2020, with an annual growth rate of around 13%. The segment includes dry food, wet food, and treats, with premium and specialized diets becoming increasingly popular.

The veterinary care segment includes routine check-ups, vaccinations, surgeries, and preventive care. The “IMARC Group Report” estimates this segment to be valued at INR 1,000 crore in 2021, with a growth rate of 10% per annum. The rise of pet insurance and digital veterinary services has also contributed to this growth.
Grooming and Accessories
This segment covers grooming products, toys, clothing, and accessories. It was valued at INR 800 crore in 2021, growing at an 11% annual rate according to the “TechSci Research Report”. Increased humanization of pets has driven demand for premium grooming products and accessories.

Rising Premiumization: There is a noticeable trend towards premium products, especially in pet food and grooming segments. Owners are willing to spend more on high-quality, nutritious food and premium grooming products.

Awareness and Education: Greater awareness about pet health, nutrition, and wellness has led to higher spending on veterinary care and pharmaceuticals.
Social Media Influence: Pet owners are increasingly influenced by social media, leading to trends in pet fashion, grooming, and unique pet services.
COVID-19 Impact: The pandemic saw a rise in pet adoption as people sought companionship during lockdowns. It also accelerated the adoption of digital services and e-commerce for pet products.
Influencing Phenomena
Several phenomena have influenced the Indian pet market:
Regulatory Changes: Policies regarding pet importation, breeding standards, and veterinary practices have shaped the market dynamics.
Technological Advancements: Innovations in pet care products, telehealth, and e-commerce platforms have transformed how pet services are delivered and consumed.
Environmental Concerns: There is a growing trend towards sustainable and eco-friendly pet products as consumers become more environmentally conscious.
Cultural Shifts: Changing cultural attitudes towards pets as part of the family unit have driven market growth across all segments.
Conclusion
The Indian pet market, particularly for dogs, is poised for continued growth, driven by rising incomes, urbanization, and the increasing humanization of pets. With robust growth across all segments, from pet food to veterinary care and services, the market offers substantial opportunities for businesses and investors. The impact of digital transformation and changing consumer behavior will further shape the future of this dynamic market.

It's Getting Harder to Ignore Cross-Border Cybersecurity Issues
It’s Getting Harder to Ignore Cross-Border Cybersecurity Issues
US (VOSD) – Last year, former “border czar” Alan Bersin told me that one aspect of border security is often overlooked by the public: cybersecurity.
Bersin’s point was recently driven home after a hack of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection contractor exposed the faces and license plates of thousands of U.S. travelers who crossed the border as well as the inner workings of a complex surveillance…
