India has unveiled four Air Force pilots who have been shortlisted to travel on the country's maiden space flight scheduled for next year.
The Gaganyaan mission aims to send three astronauts to an orbit of 400km and bring them back after three days.
India's space agency Isro has been carrying out a number of tests to prepare for the flight.
In October, a key test demonstrated that the crew could safely escape the rocket in case it malfunctioned.
After its success, Isro said a test flight would take a robot into space in 2024, before astronauts are sent into space in 2025.
At a function at the Isro centre in the southern city of Thiruvananthapuram (formerly Trivandrum) on Tuesday, the four astronaut-designates were described as "dreamers, adventurers and valiant men preparing to go into space".
The officers, chosen from the Indian Air Force, were introduced as Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Isro chief S Somanath pinned badges with golden wings onto their shirts and Mr Modi described them as "India's pride".
"These are not just four names or four people. They are four powers who will carry the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians to space. I congratulate and wish them all the best," he said.
Officials said the men were selected from a pool of Air Force pilots and had undergone extensive physical and psychological tests before being shortlisted.
They have undergone rigorous training for 13 months in Russia and are now carrying on with their gruelling schedule back home. A video screened at the event showed them working out in the gym, swimming and doing yoga.
On Tuesday, Isro also showed a glimpse of Vyommitra - Sanskrit word for "space friend" - the female humanoid that will be sent into space later this year.
The Gaganyaan Mission is India's first human space flight programme for which extensive preparations are underway at various Isro centres.
Named after the Sanskrit word for craft or vehicle to the sky, the Gaganyaan project has been developed at the cost of 90bn rupees ($1bn; £897m).
If it succeeds, India will become only the fourth country to send a human into space after the Soviet Union, the US and China.
Gaganyaan has generated a lot of interest in India, although it's coming decades after Soviet Union and the US started making trips to the low Earth orbit. Both have been in space since 1961. China became the third country to reach space in October 2003 when a Chinese mission spent 21 hours and orbited Earth 14 times. And the US and China have fully operational space stations in low Earth orbit.
An Indian astronaut also went to space as early as in 1984 when Rakesh Sharma spent nearly eight days on a Russian spacecraft.
How important are India's Moon mission findings?
What has India's rover been up to on the Moon?
Last year, India made major forays into space. The country made history by becoming the first to land near the Moon's south pole in August 2023.
Just weeks later, scientists launched Aditya-L1, India's first observation mission to the Sun which is now in orbit, keeping an eye on our solar system's most important and volatile star.
India has also announced ambitious new plans for space, saying it would aim to set up a space station by 2035 and send an astronaut to the Moon by 2040.

Axiom-4 Mission with Indian Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Delayed Due to Technical Issue
The launch of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission to the International Space Station (ISS), which includes Indian Air Force officer Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, has been delayed due to a technical issue. The announcement was made by Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, on Wednesday.
According to SpaceX, a leak in the liquid oxygen system was found during a routine check of the rocket. “We are pausing the Falcon 9 launch of Ax-4 to the Space Station to fix the leak and complete all safety checks. A new launch date will be shared soon,” the company said in a post on social media.
The Ax-4 mission was scheduled to launch on June 11, 2025. Shukla was set to become the second Indian to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma, who flew with a Soviet crew in 1984.
What Caused the Delay?
India’s space agency ISRO explained that a short engine test was done as part of the launch preparation. During this test, a leak was found in the rocket's oxygen system. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan said the leak will be repaired, and further tests will be carried out before giving the green light to launch.
This is the fourth time the Ax-4 mission has been delayed. Just a few days ago, the launch was pushed back due to poor weather, including chances of rain and strong winds.
A Big Step for India’s Space Plans
The Ax-4 mission is a joint effort by NASA, ISRO, and SpaceX. The team of astronauts, including Shukla, will spend about two weeks on the International Space Station. They will carry out experiments focused on space health and science, many of which are designed by Indian researchers.
The mission is also expected to help ISRO prepare for its future Gaganyaan mission, which will be India’s first manned spaceflight.
A new launch date is expected soon. Meanwhile, the teams involved say safety is the top priority, and the mission will go ahead only after all systems are thoroughly checked. To read top international news in Hindi, then subscribe to our newsletter today!

Price: [price_with_discount] (as of [price_update_date] - Details) [ad_1] In 2006, IndiGo was one of the late entrants into the low-cost airline business in India. The market already had many strong players by then—several of them new—including Captain Gopinath's Air Deccan, Ajay Singh's SpiceJet, Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher Airlines and Wadia Group's GoAir. In the next seventeen years, while some struggled and others were grounded, IndiGo became not only the largest airline in the country, but also the most valuable in the history of Indian aviation. No other Indian airline has come close to matching these numbers since Indian aviation took off in 1932 with J.R.D. Tata's Air India. What does IndiGo do differently—and right? What makes it prosper in a troubled and often loss-riddled industry? Why has IndiGo continued to grow despite the rift in the nearly twenty-five-year-long friendship of its promoters Rahul Bhatia and Rakesh Gangwal? What is the road ahead for IndiGo as it defends its supremacy in Indian aviation from Tata and Singapore Airlines-backed Air India? In Sky High, award-winning journalist Tarun Shukla presents a detailed account of how one dream, two media-shy friends and some great execution created an aviation behemoth. Based on years of research, extensive interviews and authoritative data, this is a fascinating story of patience, planning and persistence. [ad_2]

PM Modi introduces ‘four astronauts” to the world who will venture on India’s first human crewed flight to space
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced four elite fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force (IAF) who will be the “astronauts designates” of India. These four pilots have been selected for the first-ever human-crewed space flight- the Gaganyaan mission.
PM Modi visited the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) research institute in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, where he announced.
The names of these four astronauts are IAF’s group captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, group captain Ajit Krishnan, group captain Angad Pratap, and wing commander Shubhanshu Shukla. They have been under extensive training for the Gaganyaan mission for the last five years. The training was held in Russian and Indian facilities. During a special ceremony, the Prime Minister awarded “Antriksh Yatri Pankh” (astronaut wings) to the four astronauts on Tuesday.
While introducing the four astronauts, PM said that these “four forces” will carry the aspirations of 1.4 billion people on their shoulders as they begin their mission.
“The four astronaut-designates are not just four names or individuals, they are the four forces that are carrying the aspirations of 140 crore Indians into space... They symbolize the trust, courage, valor, and discipline of today’s India,” Modi said.
Emphasizing the 40 years of gap between the last Indian being sent to space and now, PM Modi said that this will be an effort “Made In India”.
“After over 40 years, Indians will be traveling to space again. But this time, the countdown and the rocket will all be ours,” the Prime Minister said.
To date, Cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma is the only Indian to have traveled to space. He took a flight to space in a Russian-made Soyuz spacecraft in year 1984.
