Kenyan science teacher Peter Tabichi wins $1m global award
A science teacher from rural Kenya who donates most of his salary to help poorer students has been crowned the world’s best teacher and awarded a $1m prize, beating 10,000 nominations from 179 countries.
Peter Tabichi, 36, a maths and physics teacher at Keriko secondary school in Pwani Village, in a remote part of Kenya’s Rift Valley, has won the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2019.
Tabichi, a member of the Franciscan religious order, received his prize at a ceremony in Dubai hosted by actor Hugh Jackman.
Tabichi gives away 80% of his income to help the poorest students at the poorly-equipped and overcrowded school who could not otherwise not afford uniforms and books.
More than 90% of his pupils are from poor families and almost a third are orphans or have only one parent. Drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, dropping out early from school, young marriages and suicide are common. Students have to walk 7km along roads that can become impassable in the rainy season to reach the school and the area can be affected by drought and famine.

Despite only having one computer, a poor internet connection and a student-teacher ratio of 58:1, Tabichi started a “talent nurturing club” and expanded the school’s science club, helping pupils design research projects of such quality that many now qualify for national competitions.
His students have taken part in international science competitions and won an award from the Royal Society of Chemistry after harnessing local plant life to generate electricity.
Tabichi and four colleagues also give struggling pupils one-to-one tuition in maths and science, visiting students’ homes and meeting their families to identify the challenges they face.
Enrolment at the school has doubled to 400 over three years and girls’ achievement in particular has been boosted.
Accepting the prize, Tabichi said: “I am only here because of what my students have achieved. This prize gives them a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything.”
The Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta, said in a video message: “Peter, your story is the story of Africa, a young continent bursting with talent.”
Now in its fifth year, the prize was set up to highlight the vital role teachers play in society.
Sunny Varkey, founder of the Varkey Foundation, said she hoped Tabichi’s story would encourage others to enter the profession and “shine a spotlight on the truly inspiring work teachers do to make tomorrow brighter than today”.
Tabichi said Africa’s young people would no longer be held back by low expectations. “Africa will produce scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs whose names will be one day famous in every corner of the world. And girls will be a huge part of this story,” he said.
“I believe science and technology can play a leading role in unlocking Africa’s potential. It’s morning in Africa. The skies are clear. This is Africa’s time.”
Last year’s prize went to an arts teacher from north London, Andria Zafirakou. An assistant headteacher from Birmingham, Andrew Moffat, who made headlines because of a row with parents over LGBT lessons, was among this year’s top 10 finalists.

Professor do Sistema Socioeducativo do DF concorre a honraria internacional
O professor de História Francisco Celso Leitão Freitas é um dos finalistas do prêmio Top 50, do Global Teacher Prize 2020, considerado “o nobel da educação”. O Global Teaher Prize é uma premiação que, instituída pela Varkey Foundation, nas edições dos últimos três anos, teve três finalistas brasileiros: o capixaba Wemerson da Silva, em 2017; o paulista Diego Mahfouz Faria Lima (2018) e, em 2019, outra paulista, Debora Garofalo. Em comum, todos foram selecionados pela magnitude de seu trabalho.
Francisco é o criador do Projeto Rap (Ressocialização, Autonomia e Protagonismo), uma alusão ao gênero musical rap. Francisco utiliza o rap como ferramenta pedagógica na Unidade de Internação (UI) de Santa Maria do Sistema Socioeducativo do DF, vinculada à Secretaria de Justiça e Cidadania (Sejus).
Com esse trabalho, desenvolvido em parceria  om a Secretaria de Educação (SEE),  o projeto ganhou corpo. Francisco já tem dois livros publicados, várias músicas gravadas e alguns videoclipes – entre esses, 18 Razões. Pela não redução da maioridade penal, exibido no 52º Festival de Brasília de Cinema Brasileiro, no ano passado. O projeto tem aberto portas para egressos do socioeducativo se ressocializarem. Contempla crianças e jovens entre 12 e 21 anos que estão cumprindo medida de privação de liberdade. Confira a entrevista do professor Francisco Celso à Assessoria de Comunicação da Sejus.

Fale um pouco sobre o sr., sua formação e história de vida.
Sou do Distrito federal, nascido e criado no Guará. Também morei no Recanto das Emas. Sou professor de História e produtor cultural. Para mim, educação sem cultura é o mesmo que esqueleto sem musculatura. Acredito que a arte alcança mais o coração das pessoas do que o discurso eloquente.
Como se deu seu ingresso como professor no Sistema Socioeducativo do DF?
Quando iniciei no socioeducativo, em 2015, percebi que os meninos e meninas não se identificavam com as histórias dos livros didáticos. Percebi que muitos utilizam linguagem do rap. Faz parte do dia a dia deles. Essa é a realidade de uma juventude preta, pobre e periférica. No primeiro semestre, fechei este diagnóstico. Daí resolvi usar o rap como ferramenta pedagógica, e recebo todo apoio para o projeto na Sejus.
A aceitação foi ampla?
Sim. E o que mais me surpreendeu foi o talento deles, a capacidade de compor e rimar. Superavam bloqueios que eles mesmo se colocavam no local. Pude ver melhoras nas escritas, na argumentação, na expressão corporal. Muitos jovens estavam há muito tempo sem frequentar escola, outros tinham dificuldades de leitura. Minhas abordagens passaram a ser de coisas conectadas à realidade deles, literatura marginal, textos curtos.
Quais as maiores dificuldades?
O sistema socioeducativo é muito ímpar, muito rotativo. O aluno que estava na aula anterior, na seguinte já foi liberado. É muito complicado ser conteudista. Não tem como dar continuidade. A estratégia foi utilizar os eixos transversais do currículo em movimento da educação básica do GDF, que são diversidade, direitos humanos e sustentabilidade.
Na prática, como se dá esse processo?
Eu pego o rap e faço as vinculações históricas, uso como instrumento de aproximação com eles. E eles começaram a expressar o que aprenderam de forma muito livre – em desenhos, poesias, redação e muitos fizeram letra de rap. Eu costurei parcerias e fizemos musicalização dessas letras. Já lançamos dois livros com essas produções. A gente tem várias produções a serem compiladas em CDs. Depois, partimos para acompanhamento de egressos. A partir de videoclipes, eles foram convidados para se apresentar na Procuradoria-Geral da República e na abertura do 2º Simpósio Nacional em Socioeducação, com apoio da Sejus. Também foram convidados a participar de campanha nacional do Conselho Federal de Química.
Então o projeto extrapola a escola?
Sim. O projeto vem oportunizando acompanhar os socioeducandos já como egressos, dando continuidade à ressocialização deles. Porque a principal dificuldade do sistema é o acompanhamento de egressos. Quando eles saem, voltam para o mesmo ciclo de negação de direitos, difícil de romper. Aí, voltam à criminalidade. Dar a eles uma outra perspectiva é o mais gratificante.
Esse método pode ser adotado em outras unidades do sistema socioeducativo?
O reconhecimento do projeto promoveu vários convites para expandir dentro do socioeducativo e em escolas regulares, como palestrante. Participei como palestrante de outro projeto da Secretaria de Justiça e Cidadania, o RAPensando nas Escolas, em quase 100 escolas de Ceilândia, Taguatinga e Recanto das Emas. Fazemos então um trabalho preventivo para que os jovens não entrem na criminalidade. Me enxergo nesses meninos, sou filho da escola pública. Alguns meninos dizem: “vou partir para ‘rebento’ porque não dá nada, porque sou ‘de menor’”. Essa é uma fala que desconstruímos. Explicamos que essa história de não dar em nada não existe e que o socioeducativo é lugar de muito sofrimento. Trabalhamos no tripé: prevenção nas escolas regulares; no socioeducativo damos início ao processo de ressocialização e depois fazemos o acompanhamento dos egressos para que não reincidam no crime.
E sobre o prêmio a que o sr. está concorrendo?
O Top 50 do Global Teacher Prize é uma premiação internacional promovida pela Varkey Foundation. A entidade premia, anualmente, com US$ 1 milhão, um professor que tenha prestado uma excelente contribuição para sua profissão. A gente ganhou o prêmio local do Itaú Unicef 2017; em 2018, a gente ganhou o mesmo prêmio, Itaú Unicef, etapa local e nacional. Neste ano de 2020, a gente foi campeã do Selo de Práticas Inovadoras na Educação. Os três indicados do Brasil ao importante prêmio internacional [além dele] são a professora de educação especial e língua portuguesa Doani Emanuela Bertan, de Campinas (SP) e a professora Lília Melo, de Belém (PA). Os três brasileiros fazem parte de um grupo seleto de 50 educadores do mundo. Esses dez selecionados irão para Dubai, nos Emirados Árabes, para a cerimônia de premiação, e lá será anunciado o campeão da premiação. O vencedor só será revelado em outubro, mas já somos embaixadores.
Como você está se sentindo? Sua vida mudou?
É muito gratificante o reconhecimento por uma questão coletiva; dar visibilidade ao sistema socioeducativo, que é bem desconhecido. Poucas pessoas sabem que lá dentro tem escolas e que os internos produzem muitas coisas boas. O que vemos na mídia é só o negativo. No imaginário social, os jovens que lá estão são tidos como garotos e garotas problemas, mas não o são. São garotas e garotos com muitos problemas, mas que não tiveram direitos. São de extrema vulnerabilidade social. Não são monstros, são seres humanos que têm defeitos, como todos nós. Temos que dominar todas as técnicas e tecnologias, mas, com outros seres humanos, temos que ser humanos.

Peter Tabichi, a Kenyan math and physics teacher, won the $1 million Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize at a star-studded event in Dubai Sunday (March 24).
Accompanied by his father, Tabichi said the prize showed that “teachers matter” and that “teaching is a noble profession.”Tabichi left his job at a private school to join the Keriko Secondary School (in Pwani Village, Nakuru, Kenya), where 95% of the students are poor and almost a third are orphans. Drug abuse, teen pregnancies, drop-outs, and suicide are common, and the school has one computer, poor internet access, and a student-teacher ratio of 58:1.
In spite of those circumstances, Tabichi’s science students have won various national science competitions, and qualified to participate at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2019 in the US. In 2017, only 16 out of the school’s 59 students went on to college, while in 2018, 26 did.
The prize was set up by the Varkey Foundation to shine a spotlight on teaching at a moment when there is a severe global teacher shortage and research shows that it will take poor countries up to 100 years to close the learning gap with richer ones. “By unearthing thousands of stories of heroes that have transformed young people’s lives, the prize hopes to bring to life the exceptional work of millions of teachers all over the world,” the foundation said.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall this morning attended a Service in the Cathedral Church of St Michael’s and All Angels, Bridgetown, Barbados.

The Earl of Wessex this morning arrived at Dubai International Airport, United Arab Emirates, and, having been received by Her Majesty’s Consul-General for Dubai (Mr Andrew Jackson), subsequently undertook engagements at Atlantis, the Palm, Crescent Road, the Palm, Dubai, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, and was received by Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (His Excellency Mr Patrick Moody).
His Royal Highness received His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan (Minister of Tolerance).
The Earl of Wessex received Mr Sunny Varkey (Founder and Trustee, the Varkey Foundation).
His Royal Highness today attended the Global Education and Skills Forum, and participated in a Roundtable Discussion.
The Earl of Wessex this afternoon received the finalists of the Global Teacher Prize Award.
His Royal Highness this evening attended a Reception followed by the Global Teacher Prize Award Ceremony.
The Earl of Wessex, Chancellor, University of Bath, afterwards attended a Roll of Honour Signing and Alumni Reception at Fairmont the Palm, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai.
His Royal Highness subsequently attended a Dinner at Atlantis, the Palm.
