I took a week-long crash course on VHDL...
I recently had a few back-to-back performance evaluations (not because of anything I did; in short, the company has regular evals alongside the normal evals every employee gets after 6 months).  My boss had a few expectations, most of them I would say are standard.  He wanted me to get more involved with the professional societies out there to keep myself informed of EE developments, to take on more of a lead role with current and future projects, and to keep learning about what the company does and find ways to help improve it. 
Like I said, pretty standard stuff.
In the very first eval, I asked if I could do more firmware stuff.  I would say that I have a decent, albeit small, CS background for and EE, and I wanted to develop that more.  Well that came to fruition this last week with a week long training course in VHDL which I wanted to sort of ramble about for a few paragraphs.
First, my software background covers mainly C and assembly, but I do remember some VHDL from a digital engineering class I had taken.  Boy was I in for a ride.  For being only a week long, that course was very thorough.  We covered the basics, which was basically a day-long VHDL refresher for me at least.  Mostly everyone had used Verilog and had at least heard of VHDL, but since Verilog was more modern (and much easier as I later came to find out) they hadn’t had a use for it.  After the first day, I was struggling with every new topic as that was where my VHDL experience pretty much ended.  Thankfully, I did have my other software experiences to rely on and that helped me chug along at a slower pace. 
Second, given the current pandemic situation, this was an online training.  I cannot express enough my distaste of online trainings.  I’ve had online courses before in college and my experience with those has helped formed that opinion.  But damn, this was a really well handled online training.  Other than the occasional VOIP glitches and unexpected noises coming through the speakers, the guy training us knew what he was doing and was very helpful throughout the course.
Lastly, and something I’m most thankful for, they gave us a s***load of resources to use.  PDFs, online simulators, and they’re going to send us a nice reference book as well.  Like I said, best part of doing this training.  We engineers love our reference materials. (Gonna insert this here, but if you want to practice your coding skills and don’t want to have to pay for or download anything, look up EDA Playground which is a free web-based code simulator)
I’m really glad that I got to take this training.  I’m actually on a project now which may require some firmware design, so that should be fun.  I did discuss this again in the performance eval I had last week and I was recommended to refresh myself on C and start learning Python so now I got some waypoints on the horizon to focus on.  The one thing I am worried about is having my EE skills dry up along the way.  Recently, I’ve noticed there are things I am forgetting and topics which I once knew pretty well that I now struggle with.  If I haven’t said it before, engineers are perpetual students and I need to keep that mentality of always learning.
