We were told to look at recycling, upcycling and sustainability. We split off into groups within the classroom based off our interests of the biosphere. I found a group of people that were also interested in air pollution and we created our group of six. We went through a lot of idea changes trying to find what artefact we would try and re-create, such as the garbage dump itself which we would instead create a ring that would orbit around the sun that was sloped towards the center of the sun and the rubbish as it went around the sun would slowly slide down the slope until it reached it melting point and would melt into liquid that would be dispersed into the vacuum of space.

We were told not to follow with this idea since it was too speculative and that we had to create a model of what we were trying to re-invent.

We then went along more grounded ideas, firstly the aerosol can, then onto the battery. While researching these we found some problems that would occur if we continued. The aerosol can had already been changed by taking out CFC’s so they don’t harm the environment as much as they used to. The battery would have been a great artefact, lithium mining is a serious concern and there still isn’t a non-toxic way of disposing it. But none of us knew how it worked and how we would even change such a thing. We found out that Virginia Tech have apparently successfully created a “sugar battery” which as well as being eco-friendly, it also holds more charge than their lithium-ion counterpart.

So we were stuck for ideas, already over a week into the assignment, before we started looking at e-waste. We came across our first problem when we realised how little time we had left ourselves for prototyping and had only planned thus far. We hadn’t given ourselves anywhere near enough time to create a good mold so we had to make a quick messier mold out of plastic.

The prototype turned out to be a failure, the latex and felt were way too flexible and the felt had absorbed the latex making the felts job redundant since it was in place to stop people that are allergic to latex from touching the latex. But as Edison says “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work”. Looking back I had noticed that were some mistakes that we had made in the production of this prototype. I also believe that changing the felt to a harder fabric such as canvas would stop the bendiness and stop the latex from being absorbed into the fabric. But then I thought about if there was a way that this research could be useful to someone else. What companies could use a alternative to plastic that is very flexible but keeps its shape. The possible artefacts could be over-ear headphones, keyboard keys.

If I were to do this again, I would get into prototyping a lot sooner as ideas on paper, while they may look good, can have very different results when created. It would also give me a lot more time to create more than one prototype if the first one was unsuccessful.

Another thing I would change would be the group I was with. I personally didn’t think the team dynamics were okay. Everyone would go off and do their own thing and come back with something that didn’t help the team at all and say that they did their part. The communication was lacking and the commitment was very low. When we were creating the model, we didn’t have two people there to help and see what was going on. I found that the group work was stressful because I had to do other peoples work of whom didn’t turn up on days that we discussed what each person was going to do and would do their own thing. I ended up writing out three other people’s speeches for the presentation. One person in my group stood out against the rest where they were looking to keep the team together and was willing to go above and beyond to get everyone on track. I am looking forward to working with them again since I know that I worked well with that attitude and they helped me keep on track.

I don’t mind the others as peers and friends but I personally don’t mesh very well with them as a group. I’ve found that the teams I work best with are people who are committed and open to discussing all ideas. Another quality I really like in teams is being opinionated, that way everyone has a say and the group is able to come to a middle ground. I’ve found that it keeps people more focused on the end goal since everyone has had a say in what the end goal is and they work for themselves as well as the group.
