The second part to this Ask, here's all the Krel stuff we have at this current time! Sorry for the delay. System jank mark 3 in a month plus clock change/birthday/mother's day yesterday has done me in.
First up is this poster for 3Below which you might not think much of except...
Tumblr media
Yeah Krel's shirt is green for some reason? Given this made it all the way to the poster and one netflix background, his model must have had a last minute change for blue. Very unusual and figured best to include it for the record.
Tumblr media
Anyway weirdness aside, the earliest Krel we know about is the artwork in Defenders of Arcadia/3Below credits which uses official Headless studios artwork. This left is screenshot from a youtuber due to not having a screenshot of him handy apart from the ending:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks for that resize tumblr good job.
There is also one other instance from The Animation Magazine. This is spliced together of various assets in the order of:
Francisco Ruiz Velasco - Morando, Fialkov, Coranda and Varvatos Vex
Yingjue Chen - Aja and Krel
Luug - Betsy Bauer
Corgi Luug, Krel, Aja and Vex as an old man however have never shown up anywhere else. It is very possible they are also Headless Studios though they could also be someone else entirely.
Tumblr media
Source
Whatever the case is, Krel pops up again in this paint by Yingjue Chen based on the Headless Studios artwork.
Tumblr media
Source
The last of the human art we have at the moment is this one by John Bell showing him in his room on a skateboard. He is used as a height reference in multiple of his 3Below pieces.
Tumblr media
Source
On the Akiridion side of things, the earliest currently known is this pair by Yingjue Chen. This has been cropped from a larger image for relevance sake.
Tumblr media
Source
After that we have this image from a bunch of sketches she did. The rest were heavily Aja leaning or too difficult to be sure so went with this one since yeah that's Krel. Either way ~weaponry~.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
This one is part of Alfonso Blaas' portfolio and yeah got nothing, absolutely no idea what this was made in relation to whatsoever. Only possibility ever been able to come up with is something to do with hiding their Akiridion forms but even that's, yeah.
Tumblr media
This one is another piece by Alfonso Blaas namely a piece of visual development included as hey, Krel's there.
Tumblr media
Source for both the above
Moving back to Francisco Ruiz Velasco a moment, he has this piece of key art from Mother's memory. There are quite a bit of various Akiridion tech in his work but going with being 98% sure it's Krel for this post. The hoverboard might be him for example but they have two arms so eeeeeh.
Tumblr media
Source
The last known is this piece of art by Yingjue Chen squirreled on Eli's conspiracy board!
Tumblr media
Source
To finish, Krel actually appeared on the Dreamworks 25 years in a unique model pose that has never shown up on any other marketing material.
Tumblr media
There is a lot of Aja specific art dotted about including a second version of the above graphic with just her and a model paint. While artists of course can put in their portfolio's whatever they want/get permission for, there is undoubtedly a heavy Aja leaning going on.
Either way hope this helps and if anything else turns up, will sneak them in.
Tumblr media
Also went with this screenshot because these three idiots are chaotic it's great.

There's actually two others of film era Steve!
This one is by Alfonso Blaas painted over Headless Studio lineart and can be found Here.
Tumblr media
Annnd there's this one by Headless Studios which you can find Here.
Tumblr media
Guessing the change happened fairly late in development hell or when things were being rejigged for a TV series. Difficult to figure out which.

Do you have anything related to the illustrations shown in the books like a brief recapitulation of troll lore and the book of ga-huel that appear in the series? Ty c:
Right now it's not coming up to 1am: The answer is kinda.
So an important note first, this is indeed Gunmar!
Tumblr media
It is also a very specific Gunmar that to date has only shown up in one place online and it is a part of this thing:
Tumblr media
Enhancing:
Tumblr media
Source - This particular art is by Headless Studios.
And that would be Bular during his Gunmar period. You can see that whole mess with bonus Draal in a design path here. No idea why they went with that one specifically but hey! Maybe in universe they thought Bular looked cooler if they aged up him a bit.
As for the books themselves we do have a few of them online which means it's likely all the book illustrations were by Yingjue Chen (@ yingjue here on tumblr). Understandably we haven't got 1:1 for all of them to be 100% certain just that the odds are pretty good.
Also great if you wanted a better view of Draal about to get booted.
Tumblr media
Source
These ones are hers as well!
Tumblr media
Source
Do remember somebody at one point asking if there could be an actual Book of Ga-Huel published though it was pointed out they only made enough illustrations for what was needed. Still we have these and that's neat!

Can't stop me having direct links vimeo.
While most of Juan Solis' model work is also linked on his artstation page, weirdly enough one isn't. Enter, Ms. Janeth who at the time wasmerely known as teacher! On the left is her Headless Studios concept art.
vimeo
We do happen to have a bit more of her development including what has been affectionately dubbed her lesbian look too:

Forgot how much canva despises the idea of previews, anyway.
Couple of weeks ago on Scott Cooper's new website when innocently went to grab the Blinky's Day Out link, something else appeared. What made this even more surprising is it had never been seen previously. So for your humble Tuesday here is a small sequence from A Night to Remember which you can find here! Just click on the right of the screen to move things along, the bar at the bottom doesn't always show up.
Tumblr media
Right with that out the way there is something else rather special about this particular sequence, apart from having a date for the Spring Fling, and that's this:
Tumblr media
Do any of these girls look familiar at all? Well let's start with the unknown girl on the left. She may have had a tiny appearance in a certain thread posted on this account. If you look very closely at this artwork by Yingjue Chen there is a girl who looks pretty similar on the top row with shorter hair. Not a perfect match of course, just being head and shoulders makes that tricky, but not impossible. That means it is highly likely she was one of the Headless Studios designs and this is not the only indication...
Tumblr media
Source
As the girl on the right is Shannon! But wait you say, that girl is skinny there's no way that's her. This is then slid in front of you:
Tumblr media
This is from the Art of Trollhunters artbook. While normally would avoid photos/scans unless officially released, this one never has been and at the precise moment do actually need it. This is cropped from a video as we're not giving keys for the uploader getting a copyright strike. You can see some of the others in the class book as well which is a nice touch.
Finally in the middle? Blonde Zoe returns for one rather unexpected cameo in last place would have expected :) Between her and that very specific version of Shannon this means that Scott must have had some Headless Studios art for student reference when drawing. Which is neat!
Tumblr media
Sometimes running this Archive is coming across as an insane conspiracy theorist but equally it's a very neat detail.

Sites going down has been a routine theme of late so for something a smidge different, an article that's breaking. Previously on the Animation Magazine article you could see white boxes that you could click for the images but now uh.
Tumblr media
Yeah it's pretty broken and the only way to access the 'missing' ones is through the source code. To save you faffing around with all of that, here they all are :) Figuring out the artist behind each has been an ongoing project thus not all pieces have been figured out at the time of typing.

Troll Dads Design Path - Part 1
This thread is long overdue and has hit further problems in being posted delaying it further, apologises for that. Anyway we're here now and finally it's time to look at some troll dads.
This has been pieced together from what has been found online and acknowledges that there is further content in the artbook or somewhere online that has yet to be found. The timeline will also be as accurate as can be guessed
Tumblr media
Might as well start with the original Trollhunters book where a much wiggly Blinky of the Lizzgump clan and the fetching lady Johannah Mmmm ARRRGH!!! looked very different to their tv designs. E. M. Gist produced the below artwork that was to be the cover though was replaced by Sean Murray's Amulet artwork fairly last minute. It often blows around the internet in bad quality and never credited so it's a pleasure to finally be able to do that.
Tumblr media
Source
Sean Murray has two illustrations with his own take on the duo! If Blinky was more visible you'd see a skirt made out of medals he's wearing. These were part of a set of interior illustrations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source includes other illustrations he made for the novel
Understandably for the original Trollhunters film their designs had to be changed to be both more animation and child friendly. Rodrigo Blaas produced this version in 2010 showing Jack Sturges, Handsome Blinky and AAARRRGGHH carrying a hunk of Gunmar around, something that sticks around in the artwork for a long while.
Handsome Blinky can kindly stay away.
Tumblr media
Source
On his website John Bell has this artwork from 2012, clearly still in the film phase, of his take on the duo. You can certainly see some themes still sticking around from the earlier days.
Tumblr media
Source
Blinky went all sorts of directions as can be seen in this artwork by Francisco Ruiz Velasco. His four arms didn't seem to show up until he took on a more familiar shape and surprisingly he had a tail at one point!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
Headless Studios were also trying out different Blinky designs including a tall variant until his more rectangle shape we're more used to started to crop up more and more. There are even more of these in the artbook.
Tumblr media
Source
As they deserve a special place being so unique these fuzzy Blinky's are by Francisco Ruiz Velasco and show a rather familiar outfit starting to appear. He still has a little tail though his feet are more feathered than solid but it only adds to his adorable charm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
This one wasn't posted in the original thread, figured it'd be a nice treat for the long wait. Simon Rogers did concept art for the original film and if you look at the bottom middle and left a bit there is a squat Blinky, A tall standing but short legged AAARRRGGHH with a chunk of Gunmar and likely Jim in Trollmarket.
This seemed a good transition piece between the dads too.
Tumblr media
Source
AAARRRGGHH seemed to hit his stride much sooner than Blinky did with most changes focusing on how much fluff, facial shape and his tattoos. These images are by Francisco Ruiz Velasco and include shorts prior to that loincloth number he'll be sporting soon. With his build heading the right direction too he's already looks like a good boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
Meanwhile at Headless Studios, AAARRRGGHH design started to cement into something more familiar to us by keeping that scruff n fluff and extending it. This is the first appearance of his arm stripes which will stick around for quite a while along with leg wraps. His tail is pure fuzz when it appears.
Tumblr media
Source
Shown in the artbook along with an art version by Headless Studios (A version of is below too), this small statue was used in the original pitch and was created by Chris Ryniak! Poor Toby.
Tumblr media
Source
Blinky in the meanwhile was still being fairly fast and funky though now his shape seemed to stick and it was more the specifics that were in flux. His number of eyes kept changing, glasses, fabulous eyeliner and even a camp counselor look going on.
Bar minor adjustments though he too would hit his stride. All the below are by Headless Studios.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
The colours remained in flux for a while though and a number plate temporarily appears on his shoulder. He does look rather fetching in pink though? The chunk of Gunmar is back and AAARRRGGHH remains stable for the time being other than being red. Both are Headless Studios again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
Sergio Casas did a colour pass making the trolls makeup game the best it'll be. AAARRGGHH's arm stripes are starting to dwindle though the earring is sticking as it will until the final. This is also the last appearance of Blinky's number plate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
More Headless Studios! His arm warmers make their last stand here and the more obvious loin cloth putting an appearance. The bottom middle one is likely what Betsy Bauer based the phone artwork in Wizards on. Look at that smile.
Tumblr media
Source
Two more by Francisco Ruiz Velasco, while the top image does have vague hints of fuzzy Blinky AAARRRGGHH lacks his arm warmers for clear rune marks instead. The second image showing "Gunmar" at Killahead Bridge comes much later and AAARRGGHH having a sharper design than the softer rounded one he did previously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source 1 / Source 2
Jonatan Catalan Navarrete portfolio includes a poster for when it was still very much the film version and a slightly terrifying Blinky model (A textureless version is in the artbook) and the final appearance of the hunk of Gunmar.
Tumblr media
Source
There is actually two versions of the below image by Alfonso Blaas though this is the lesser known one with gorgeous lighting, the other being an earlier blue concept used to announce the Trollhunters tv project. AAARRGGHH has his loincloth still but very much looking like who we know and love now.
Tumblr media

Due to hitting the image cap the thread has been split into two! You can find the second part here.

Troll Dads Design Path - Part 2
Due to hitting the image cap the thread has been split into two! You can find the first part here.
Back to the film for a second we have more Troll Dads in concept art by Geoffrey Thoorens! Blinky was partially bald which I think we should be glad he has since recovered from. The legwarmers last stand too! As this is dated 2014 it could have been before the Alfonso Blaas artwork finishing the last thread? Could have been before? Difficult to tell given the older Daylight armour style.
Either way things seem funky in Trollmarket.
Tumblr media
Source
Another stop at Headless Studios has some Blinky model/expression sheets where his chin has properly detached from his body! There is also the rather terrifying idea of him wielding a shield, sword and mace at the same time. There's a version in the art book where the eyebrows return though thankfully they're omitted here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source 1 / Source 2
On his Artstation Alfonso Blaas has these two colour references, one over a production 3D ambient occlusion model and the other over Headless lineart. The mouth constantly pops up as reference and is first seen here. Most importantly though may all your krubera mossy description dreams come true! You can behold his arms used to be much chunkier before the model was adjusted to give him proper joints.
Blinky is just out here judging everyone and everything. Someone stole his weaponry clearly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
To wrap up, Victor Vinyals was kind enough to upload a demo of the rig he made for Trollhunters using a bald AAARRRGGHH as his test subject which this is screenshot from. If you've ever wondered what he looks like under all that fluff now is your chance.
Tumblr media
Source
To close up a hug. Hope you've enjoyed this meaty experience!

Do you know if there is any Draal concept art?
One or two!
Back in his purple Bular period by Headless Studios
Tumblr media
Source
And a video turnaround by Juan Solis where he gained arm blades also during his Bular period
vimeo
Then we have Headless Studios again with his more familiar blue self
Tumblr media
Source
And finally this artwork by Alfonso Blaas painted over a 3D ambient occlusion model. and based on Headless lineart. This particular version is unique as the larger version at the source below doesn't include the back view, it must have been in his portfolio at one point though.
Tumblr media
Source
There WAS a slide shown at the Annie Awards though much like the one with Strickler and Steve not managed to track them down yet. There is however more in the artbook including of his purple stage and a detailed look at his arm!
Some of these images were shamelessly nabbed from the Draal/Bular/Gunmar design path, these guys are weirdly tied together. The blue colour is 100% Steve's fault though and is the only trace from when he was still a changeling.

Apart from the colour keys some brand new artwork by Headless Studios was also discovered last week on that Italian site! For completion sake some other finds have been included since they’re by the same team as they tend to be a bit scattered to the four winds.
First up we have a bunch of Jims! This image was shown at the Annie Awards in 2017 and is a nice chonky version to boot showing a couple of earlier armour designs.
Tumblr media
This one while found on the same site is brand new giving a real insight of just how much work goes into designing and the movement of the character.
Tumblr media
Source
Then you get this little oddity which was found on a Chinese fan wiki. One of these is completely brand new though the page number suggests it could be page two from a set that included the above? It’s pretty unknown at this point.
Tumblr media
Source
Next up, Claire! This is another Annie Awards slide in chonky format including a concept for the Juliet dress.
Tumblr media
Source
The gift set of the Annie Awards never shows AAARRRGGHH so I’m not entirely sure if he was shown there but here he is anyway! All artwork shown here is already in the artbook though this is the first time it’s collected online in one place.
Tumblr media
Source
This first image is Blinky’s Annie Award slide which does have some work in common with the tumblr post others are not and that means more Blinky for your day! Even armed which is a bit concerning.
Tumblr media
Then on the same site are these two which contain variants not even in the artbook! Scout Blinky concerns me but gotta say glasses really suits him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source
This is another Annie Awards slide containing Bular when he was still in the transitional phase of actually being Gunmar. More Nomura is of course always a delight.
Tumblr media
Source
As a fun bonus to round things off some Dictatious artwork many people have missed as it’s located in the oddest place and amongst broken image previews though they do work if you click them out.
Tumblr media
Source
May my Friday this week be a bit less chaotic... There are currently four Annie Awards slides unaccounted for and it’s unknown if they even ARE out there but as recently has proved there still are surprises to be ferreted.

We have his original paint over the 3D ambient occlusion model too if it helps for a larger view? His model had a refresh for Wizards that came with a few tweaks, screenshots will be your best bet for that.
Tumblr media
Source
His Headless Studios artwork was used in the game like so, don’t have other screenshots of it to hand since he appears very late on.
Tumblr media
If you want the Camelot look however there’s a lot more to work with... Personally whenever I draw him I use a mixture of screenshots and Teny’s artwork :)
someone..anyone. Ajajfjskakak I need help drawing Douxie, I feel like I keep butchering this man’s look. Anyone got pointers lol

Draal - Bular - Gunmar Design Path
Today we're taking a look at the very funky design path that Draal, Bular and Gunmar went on during Trollhunters pieced together as best as possible through the power of file names, matching things and the artbook. The order of events is as accurate as I can guess as for understandable reasons I cannot see an exact timeline.
First up from one of Headless Studios' posts we can see what is very definitely a purple Draal as I've been affectionately dubbing him looking a big brutal boy with Caveman Spongebob is also a frequent comparison.
Tumblr media
Source
He appears again on Juan Solis' Artstation (The model is miscreditted as Headless Studios in the artbook) having gained a new fancy arm blade. The file name for this? TROLLHUNTERS_bular!
vimeo
Source and of note there is also a Ms. Janeth on his vimeo account.
On the official Tales of Arcadia instagram he pops up again looking a lot more familiar in his blue though lacking a nose ring. It's very possible this stage was when he was still tied to Steve as a changeling's troll form which would account for the gruffer look.
Tumblr media
Source
By the time we get to Alfonso Blaas's paint over on the 3D ambient occlusion model and Headless lineart Draal is looking much more like the troll we know and love!
Tumblr media
Source
So what was going on with Bular if he was purple Draal? The short answer is at one point he was Gunmar's design which had a funky journey too. He sure went places before the finalised banger we got. This art is by Headless Studios.
Tumblr media
Source 1 / Source 2
On Francisco Ruiz Velasco's blogspot account there are few bits of Trollhunters art from back when it's a film and the filenames in the url are very interesting, the first confirms that IS Gunmar while the second suggests it is the Battle of Killahead... The other thing? He only has one eye!
Tumblr media
Source 1 / Source 2
This suggests that at some point during this design process he lost it.The following headshot is by Headless Studios is clearly a Bular design with the glowing eye that is a defining Gunmar trait becoming more evident
Tumblr media
Source
"Gunmar" is getting closer to the Bular we know and love at this point and now in colour. Francisco Ruiz Velasco still has the filename whereas Headless Studios is really rolling with the funky glow.
Tumblr media
Source 1 / Source 2
After the thread was posted (And on here) I managed to track down the Annie Awards slide which has an alternate expression on the right and the front view of the above image as well. This is being added for completion and because it’s neat!
Tumblr media
Source
Headless Studios’ version was adapted over Francisco Ruiz Velasco's design as can be seen in this image collab between him, Sergio Casas and Alfonso Blaas. Is this the point of Bular and Gunmar officially split into separate characters? Could be!
Tumblr media
Source
Along with the extra Bular art Gunmar art was found belatedly online! Some of these are in the artbook while others are unique to this.
Unknown artist/seeking confirmation - Top left
Rustam Hasanov - All middle images, top right and possibly top left
Headless Studios - Bottom left
Unknown artist/seeking confirmation - Bottom right
Tumblr media
Source
[/edit 10/10/2021] The top right image source was discovered confirming it is indeed Rustam’s work! Given his description this is either before “Gunmar” hit his Bular stage or after their split.
Tumblr media
Source
You sure went through a dramatic phase finding your voice Gunmar.
Tumblr media
[/edit 23/05/2023] He appeared to cement with no design wiggle compared to Angor Rot’s more last minute change too. With the benefit of a close up of this chunk of Killahead by Anthony Romero we can even see his carvings.
Tumblr media
Source
Thus Bular settles into his new found role of "the son of Gunmar" as shown in this Character Development by Leo Sanchez Studio & Visual Development/Shading n Lighting by Jonatan Catalan Navarrete and paint over the 3D ambient occlusion model by Alfonso Blaas his journey now completed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source 1 / Source 2
[/edit 23/05/2023] As some people might be using this thread as troll reference in general , we now have a clear shot of the skulls on Bular’s belt courtesy of Anthony Romero!

Nomura Design Path
Apologises for the slight delay on this, health issues cannot be helped. Storyboards from Just Add Water will be crossposted tomorrow.
While there is a solitary addition in the artbook where her human form has swepy bangs instead of a fringe and wearing gloves, we're fairly lucky in that there's a fair amount of Nomura's concepts are online! This one by Headless Studios is the earliest so it's unknown if she was a hit the ground running after being redesigned from The Crooked Man or there was anything else prior.
Her weapon choice being swords seemed to settle fairly early though and were basic katana at the time. Her hair style, limbs, belt and horns appear to have been the biggest back and forth until settling on a combination.
Tumblr media
[Source]
We also have this beefy slide that appeared at the 2016 Annie Awards, where Trollhunters won best Character Design, that contains two additional expressions too.
Tumblr media
[Source]
And one extra from the official instagram for luck.
Tumblr media
[Source]
In addition thanks to Rustam Hasanov, Trollhunters' Art Director, we have a maquette of her! This is a video with a turnaround.
Tumblr media
[Source]
But wait you might be thinking, she has the khopesh already here so where did those come from? Well thanks to Brent Noll we can answer that one! Below shows Headless Studios with the updated Nomura design holding one of her fabled weapons. From this he created a full break down including angles, perfect for evil perspective needs.
Tumblr media
[Source] Will need to scroll down a bit there's no direct link.
In addition to that, Jessica Bulinski has both a Nomura paint over of the changeling herself, a good look at her weaponry and a full process of how exactly it lights up. Because the eye glow is an effect it's not shown here meaning you can see the base colour easier.
Tumblr media
[Source] Will need to scroll down a bit there's no direct link.
Enjoy the chaotic gremlin/Curator Troll! All previous design threads now have titles too to make them easier to spot, debating making a specific tag.
She's awful and we love her for it.
