IT HAPPENED
I was lucky enough to meet Brandon Rogers and Vivian Nixon Williams and get their autographs!! And I got some pictures with Brandon!!
I was so nervous and excited that I was low-key shaking. But it all went well! I was able to give him the bracelet I made, we joked a little, and that was it!
So. Fucking. Awesome.

TELEVISION ACADEMY HALL OF FAME
“The First Annual Television Academy Hall of Fame Awards”
March 4, 1984 ~ NBC
Directed by Dwight Hemion
Written by Buzz Kohan
This award's mission is to recognize "persons who have made outstanding contributions in the arts, sciences or management of television, based upon either cumulative contributions and achievements or a singular contribution or achievement."
The honorees received glass statuettes in the form of two ballet dancers created by sculptor and painter Pascal called “Discipline of Creation.” The trophies were tall and difficult to handle so they were not presented during the course of the ceremony itself.
With that in mind, since 1988, inductees have received a crystal television screen atop a cast-bronze base designed by art director Romain Johnston.
Being the first such telecast, the rating were poor. The special lost not only its time slot but the entire evening with just a 16 share and a 10 rating. ABC's TV remake of A Streetcar Named Desire won the night with a 39 share and a 23.1 rating.
Just as Carol Burnett introduces Lucille Ball in this first ceremony, in 1985 the roles were reversed when Lucy introduced Burnett for the honor.
Of the other participants in this initial outing, Steve Allen was honored in 1986, Eric Sevareid in 1987, Barbara Walters in 1989, Jean Stapleton in 2002, Bea Arthur in 2008, and Sherman Hemsley in 2012.
Although Lucie Arnaz is announced in the opening credits, she did not appear in the telecast due to a prior obligation.

Sarnoff died in 1971 so his award is accepted by his son, Robert Sarnoff.
Lucy Connection: Walters interviewed Lucille Ball and Gary Morton in 1977.
Milton Berle, hosted by Steve Allen
A video tribute traces Berle's career and shows some of his classic comedy bits over the years.
Lucy Connection: Berle and Lucille Ball appeared many times together on his show and hers. Steve Allen interviewed Lucy Whittaker in “Lucy Calls the President” and was often host and panelist when Lucille Ball was on “What's My Line?” and "I’ve Got A Secret.”
William Paley, hosted by James Arness
A video tribute tracks Paley's career as a television pioneer to being the President of CBS.
During Paley's video tribute, a still frame from “I Love Lucy” is shown.
In the audience, Paley is sitting behind Lucille Ball.
Although the ceremony was broadcast on ABC TV, there was no attempt to lessen mentions of CBS and its programming.
Lucy Connection: Paley also appeared on television to tribute Lucille Ball in “CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years” in 1976.
Lucille Ball, hosted by Carol Burnett
The segment begins with a clip of “Lucy Goes To the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16) which starts with Lucy announcing: “Ricky. This is it!”
After the clip, Desi Arnaz Jr. enters and explains how his birth coincided with the birth of Little Ricky. Desi says that his sister Lucie couldn't attend because she is appearing on stage back East in The Guardsman. The show was produced at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse also starring Lucie's husband Laurence Luckinbill. It was hoped that the show would transfer to Broadway, but this did not happen.
Desi Jr. introduces Carol Burnett.
A cut-away to Lucille Ball in the audience reveals that she is holding back tears at her son's tribute. Gary Morton sits beside her. Carol tells of how Lucy came to the second night of Once Upon A Mattress on Broadway.
A video tribute tracks Lucy's childhood in Jamestown to her unlikely breakthrough television series “I Love Lucy.” Clips are from “The Audition” (Lucy as The Professor), “Lucy Does a Television Commercial” (“It's so tasty, too!”), “Hollywood at Last!” (at the Brown Derby), and “Job Switching” (“Speed it up!”).
Lucy: “We all know we never do anything alone.”
Lucille Ball gets a standing ovation both walking to the podium and then again back to her seat. Cuts to the audience, show stars like Ann Jillian dabbing their eyes at Lucy's tearful acceptance speech.
Lucy Connection: Lucy and Carol Burnett were each others biggest fans. They alternately appeared on each others television shows, as well as numerous specials and awards shows.

Eddie Albert and Peter Falk pay tribute to Chayevsky by acting out moments from his most notable work including Marty, The Tenth Man, and Network.
Susie Chayevsky could not be there to accept the award for her husband, so Fosse reads a message from her.
Chairman of the Academy John H. Mitchell takes the stage to talk about the Hall of Fame.
Lucy Connection: The following year Fosse and Ball were both part of “Night of 100 Stars II.”
Norman Lear, hosted by Beatrice Arthur
In a pre-taped segment, Jean Stapleton talks about the craft of acting which leads to a montage of scenes from “All in the Family” starring Carroll O'Connor, Rob Reiner, Sally Struthers, and Stapleton.
Bea Arthur talks about Norman Lear and quotes Paddy Chayevsky talking about Lear. Arthur starred in “Maude” a spin-off of “All in the Family.”
A video segment traces Lear's personal and career history. It includes clips from “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” “All in the Family,” “Fernwood Tonight,” “One Day at a Time,” “Maude,” “Good Times,” and “The Jeffersons.”

Harold et Maude (Harold and Maude)USA - 1971 Réalisation : Hal Ashby Scénario : Colin Higgins. Image : John A. Alonzo. Montage : William A. Sawyer, Edward Warschilka. Musique : Cat Stevens. Production : Colin Higgins, Charles Mulvehill. Interprétation : Ruth Gordon (Maude), Bud Cort (Harold), Vivian Pickles (Mrs Chasen), Cyril Cusack (Glaucus)...

By VIVIAN WANG and JEFFERY C. MAYS
The pairing of Cynthia Nixon and Jumaane Williams in New York, opposing Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, may not be as odd as it seems.

Every Baby Name We Could Possibly Think Of
Naming your baby is a big decision, and with endless options, it can also be a difficult one. Whether you're going the traditional route or want something more unique (if so, read this first!) it's helpful to have a little, or a lot, of inspiration. Ahead, you'll find nearly every baby name we could think of (close to 1,000!). These aren't just random names we found in a book or concocted ourselves - they're almost all monikers we've heard being used, or we actually know someone who goes by the name. ConLaw Class 16 – Due Process Clause II
The lecture notes are here.
Pierce v. Society of Sisters
This is the Hill Military Academy, a private school shut down due to the compulsory education law.
Buck v. Bell
This is Carrie Buck. Why was she designated as “feebleminded”? Because she had an “illegitimate child,” and they charged her with “promiscuity.” The pregnancy resulted from a rape.
This is Carrie Buck with her mother, Emma Buck.
This is Dr. J. H. Bell, the superintendent at the Virginia State Colony for Epileptics.
This is the courthouse in Amherst County, Virginia where Buck’s case was first “heard”:
This is the “State Colony for Epileptics and Feebleminded,” where Carrie Buck was sterilized in the wake of Buck v. Bell.
Here is a rendering of Carrie’s Buck family tree, as performed by Dr. Harry H. Laughlin. F stands for “feebleminded.” Notice That Carrie Buck is designated with an F, her mother Emma was designated with an F, and her daughter, Vivienne, was designated with an F. There you have three generations of imbeciles. Enough.
Haughlin, impressed that Nazi Germany adopted his ideas, had this to say:
The fact that a great state like the German Republic, which for many centuries has helped furnish the best that science has bred, has in its wisdom seen fit to enact a national eugenic legislative act providing for the sterilization of hereditarily defective persons seems to point the way for an eventual worldwide adoption of this idea.
In 1936, Laughlin was invited by the Nazis to receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine at the University of Heidelberg for his work in the “science of racial cleansing.”
During the Nuremberg trials, attorneys for the Nazis read from Justice Holmes’s opinion to illustrate that the Germans did not invent eugenics.
Here is Carrie Buck shortly before she died.
Here are several pieces of American propaganda about Eugenics.
This one says, “Some people are born to be a burden on the rest. Learn about heredity. You can help to correct these conditions.”
This piece of propaganda says “Eugenics is the self direction of human evolution.”
Speaking of social darwinism, and surivival of the fittest, here is Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who firmly believed that “Three generations of imbeciles are enough.”
Buck’s daughter, Vivian, was raised by foster parents, This is Vivian at 6 months old. She flunked her IQ test. So she was also deemed an imbecile:
It was Estabrook’s habit to photograph the subjects of his eugenical family studies, and one surviving photo shows Alice Dobbs holding Carrie’s baby. It appears that Mrs. Dobbs is holding a coin in front of Vivian’s face in an attempt to catch her attention. The baby looks past her, staring into the distance, apparently failing the test. Estabrook described that moment during his testimony at trial a few days later: “I gave the child the regular mental test for a child of the age of six months, and judging from her reaction to the tests I gave her, I decided she was below the average.”
In case you were wondering, the child was not an imbecile. Here is her report card from first grade. She was a solid B student, with an A in deportment, and on the honor roll.
Vivian died at the age of 8 due to intestinal diseases.
Despite her sterilizations, Buck would go on to be married, twice. First to William Eagle.
25 year after William’s death, Buck married Charlie Deatmore.
Here is Carrie Buck shortly before she died.
Here is a sign in Virginia to commemorate Buck v. Bell.
Nebbia v. New York
Grocer Leo Nebbia, holding a bottle of milk and a loaf of bread. The government fixed the price of milk at nine cents per quart. Nebbia tried to get around that rule with a deal: if customers bought two quarts of milk at eighteen cents (the regulated price), they would receive a free loaf of bread, which was worth five cents.
West Coast Hotel v. Parish
This is the West Coast Hotel is Wenatchee, Washington.
United States v. Carolene Products
First, here is Carolene Product’s famous footnote four:
There may be narrower scope for operation of the presumption of constitutionality when legislation appears on its face to be within a specific prohibition of the Constitution, such as those of the first ten amendments, which are deemed equally specific when held to be embraced within the Fourteenth. See Stromberg v. California, 283 U.S. 359, 369-370; Lovell v. Griffin, 303 U.S. 444, 452.
It is unnecessary to consider now whether legislation which restricts those political processes which can ordinarily be expected to bring about repeal of undesirable legislation, is to be subjected to more exacting judicial scrutiny under the general prohibitions of the Fourteenth Amendment than are most other types of legislation. On restrictions upon the right to vote, see Nixon v. Herndon, 273 U.S. 536;Nixon v. Condon, 286 U.S. 73; on restraints upon the dissemination of information, see Near v.Minnesota ex rel. Olson, 283 U.S. 697, 713-714, 718-720, 722; Grosjean v. American Press Co., 297 U.S. 233; Lovell v. Griffin, supra; on interferences with political organizations, see Stromberg v.California, supra, 369; Fiske v. Kansas, 274 U.S. 380; Whitney v. California, 274 U.S. 357, 373-378;Herndon v. Lowry, 301 U.S. 242; and see Holmes, J., in Gitlow v. New York, 268 U.S. 652, 673; as to prohibition of peaceable assembly, see De Jonge v. Oregon, 299 U.S. 353, 365.
Nor need we enquire whether similar considerations enter into the review of statutes directed at particular religious, Pierce v. Society of Sisters, 268 U.S. 510, or national, Meyer v. Nebraska, 262 U.S. 390; Bartels v. Iowa, 262 U.S. 404; Farrington v. Tokushige, 273 U.S. 484, or racial minorities,Nixon v. Herndon, supra; Nixon v. Condon, supra: whether prejudice against discrete and insular minorities may be a special condition, which tends seriously to curtail the operation of those political processes ordinarily to be relied upon to protect minorities, and which may call for a correspondingly more searching judicial inquiry. Compare McCulloch v. Maryland, 4 Wheat. 316, 428; South Carolinav. Barnwell Bros., 303 U.S. 177, 184, n. 2, and cases cited.
I have collected a fortune of information about Carolene Products, Charles Hauser (the President), and his return trip to the Supreme Court which resulted in an affirmed conviction, and a pardon by President Roosevelt. Three decades later, a district court in Illinois found the federal Filled Milk Act Unconstitutional.
As a result of United States v. Carolene Products (1938), the Carolene Products company changed the name of their product from “Carolene” to “Milnut” at some point in 1938. I previously acquired a Carolene Products Cookbook from 1939, labelled as “Milnut.”
Now, thanks to a successful eBay bid, I am the proud owner of a Carolene Products cookbook from 1937 (before the Supreme Court case!). It is labelled as “Carolene” with the same logo.
Note how it is called a “Scientific Milk Product.” After 1938, the advertisements did not call it “Milk” to avoid problems under the Federal, and state Filled Milk Acts.
Who want’s some frizzled dried beef or baked ham slice?
As well, here is the history of the Carolene Products company from MilnotMilk.com, with some interesting photos.
The Seneca plant that was built right on the border with Oklahoma, in a means to work around (literally) the Filled Milk Act. I have more details on the Seneca plant here. The plant is still in operation today, operated by the Sumker’s company (you can order Milnot online! – I have a case).
Here is a copy of FDR’s pardon of Charles Hauser, President of the Carolene Products company.
Here is a copy of the remission of imprisonment, which I received from Hauser’s granddaugther. Note that the year 1944 is printed, and someone scribbled over it 1945.

Stonewall Democrats Club Chooses Cuomo Over Nixon

Stonewall Democrats Club Chooses Cuomo Over Nixon
On Wednesday afternoon, Cynthia Nixon’s campaign sent an email blast to supporters, mocking Gov. Andrew M. Cuomos application for the Stonewall Democratic Club’s endorsement, accusing him of lying in a desperate bid to shore up support.
Hours later, the club, the city’s first lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Democratic organization, endorsed Mr. Cuomo.
In the slog to September’s primary elections, the Stonewall Democrats are just one among a bevy of groups that have weighed in on the closely watched race for governor. But their choice makes clear the challenge facing Ms. Nixon, a political novice who would be the state’s first openly gay governor, as she seeks to unseat a two-term incumbent with a measurable track record.
“I have not agreed with the governor on everything he has done, both from a policy and politics perspective,” said Jeffrey LeFrancois, a Stonewall Democrats board member. “But at the end of the day, in the state of the country, state of the world right now, to take a gamble on somebody who has had zero experience in a political or governing environment is not a risk that I think is appropriate.”
The club’s endorsement of Mr. Cuomo also suggests uneven outcomes for the insurgent candidates who have often positioned themselves as a united bloc against establishment politicians in New York.
While the Stonewall Democrats declined to support Ms. Nixon, they did back the challengers to the members of the former Independent Democratic Conference, a group of Democratic state senators who for years collaborated with Republicans. Several of the anti-I.D.C. candidates and Ms. Nixon have traded endorsements.
The split was especially striking because Ms. Nixon has repeatedly attacked Mr. Cuomo’s relationship to the I.D.C., accusing him of tacitly encouraging the group in order to squash more liberal initiatives that he, a centrist, may not have wholeheartedly supported.
In fact, Ms. Nixon’s campaign email about the governor’s application to the Stonewall Democrats singled out a question in which Mr. Cuomo answered “no” to whether he had ever supported a member of the breakaway group. Mr. Cuomo endorsed Senator Jeffrey D. Klein, the group’s leader, in 2014. “Liar, Liar,” Ms. Nixon’s email trumpeted.
The governor has rejected suggestions that he enabled the I.D.C. He was a key player in the group’s decision in April to rejoin the mainline conference.
Members of the Stonewall Democrats said there was nothing inconsistent about their decision to back the I.D.C. challengers but not Ms. Nixon.
“The I.D.C. challengers represent a desire to see change,” said Rose Christ, a former president of the club and current board member, adding that the I.D.C. had blocked Democratic proposals to strengthen protections for transgender New Yorkers.
But with Mr. Cuomo, there was no such need for change. “My wife and I were married in New York State,” Ms. Christ said. “Without his leadership on marriage equality, that would not have been possible.”
Indeed, Mr. Cuomo’s tenure in politics and his savvy in navigating Albany’s webs — both frequent targets of Ms. Nixon’s ire — were cited as the strongest reasons to support him. In addition to legalizing same-sex marriage, Mr. Cuomo has expanded housing support for H.I.V. positive New Yorkers and barred health care providers from discriminating against transgender patients.
The club would not release the breakdown of the endorsement vote. But the message from several members was the same: respect and even affection for Ms. Nixon, but hesitation about her inexperience.
The members’ emphasis on accomplishments dovetailed with a generosity about past mistakes. Of Mr. Cuomo’s answer to whether he had ever backed I.D.C. candidates, Rod Townsend, the group’s president, called the question “poorly formed,” adding that it should have differentiated between past and future support.
Likewise for the governor’s denial that he had ever supported any candidates who had worked against L.G.B.T. rights, even though he has closely aligned himself with officials like Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, who voted against same-sex marriage in 2011. (Mr. Crespo, who told reporters on Wednesday that he would no longer vote the same way, also won the club’s endorsement.)
Ms. Nixon also answered “no” to the question. Her likely running mate for lieutenant governor, Jumaane Williams, has also said he was personally opposed to same-sex marriage, although he has affirmed his support for its legality.
Again and again, Mr. Cuomo’s time in the public eye — cultivating alliances, forging policies — overshadowed Ms. Nixon’s upstart campaign, a reminder of the governor’s hefty incumbency advantage despite Ms. Nixon’s efforts to wield it against him.
Bryan Ellicott, another member of the Stonewall Democrats’ board, acknowledged that Ms. Nixon had appeared in person to appeal for the group’s support on Wednesday, while Mr. Cuomo sent a surrogate.
But he was clear when asked if her attendance affected his decision.
“No,” he said. “Because that’s the first time she’s ever done it.”

1970-1971
“The David Frost Show” was a syndicated America talk show hosted by David Frost. It was produced from 1969 to 1972 and won Emmy Awards in 1970 and 1971. Major music artists such as the Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Barbra Streisand, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, and Carly Simon all made appearances as well.
Sir David Frost (Host) was a prominent English television host and journalist. His career began in the UK in 1962 hosting “That Was the Week that Was” which led to “Frost on Sunday” in 1968. He is best remembered for his US talk show “The David Frost Show” (1969-72). His 1977 interviews with former President Richard M. Nixon were eventually staged and filmed as Frost / Nixon by Peter Morgan. In 1993 he was knighted by the Queen. Frost died in 2013 while aboard a cruise ship in the Mediterranean. He was 74 years old.

Three days earlier Vivian Vance guest-starred on “Here's Lucy” in “Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana” (HL S2;E19). Earlier that day, Lucy was a guest on “The Mike Douglas Show.”
“The David Frost Show” (May 26, 1970)
Guests: Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, George Burns
Six months earlier, Lucy made the third of her four appearances on “The Carol Burnett Show.” Carol made her second of three appearances on “Here's Lucy” in March 1970. Burns will do a cameo appearance on “Here's Lucy” in November 1970.
“The David Frost Show” (April 29, 1971)

“Lucy Helps David Frost Go Night-Night” (HL S4;E12) November 29, 1971
On “Here’s Lucy,” David Frost plays himself and Lucy Carter acts as his seat-mate on his business trip from LA to London. Lucy’s airplane antics prevent the pair from getting any sleep, and the next day jet lag sets in - on the air!
Complimenting David Frost, Lucy Carter mentions that she saw him on “The Carol Burnett Show.” In real life, Frost had been one of Burnett's celebrity guests on March 22, 1971 in return for Carol and Lucy's appearance on his show in May 1970 (see above). This “Here's Lucy” episode is also ‘payback' for that appearance.
“The David Frost Revue” (November 7, 1971)
A satirical sketch series in which Frost and his troupe of players focus on one theme each show and are joined by guest stars. Unfortunately, there are no photo or video records of Lucy’s appearance on the show.
