Listen, I know media literacy is dead and everything, but I was going through the critical tag last night (mistake) and got really annoyed at how people over there are talking about Stella so here’s a nerdy rant.

Okay, so, photographs. A trademark of Helluva Boss' storytelling. They are a narrative tool used to convey a character’s personnality at a certain point in time. For instance, Stella’s photo shows her as a brutish child, strangling defenseless quieves. This is to show us that Stella has always been an abusive character.

Later in the same episode, Stella is confronted by Stolas who wants to get a divorce. She responds by raising her hand, attempting to smack him before he deflects the blow. Notice how we transition from a shot/countershot to a profile view centered on both characters. They may be on opposite sides, but they are also on an equal footing.

Furthermore, Stella is silhouetted by the palace while Stolas has his back to the balcony. This is consistent throughout the sequence. Stella wants things to remain as they are while Stolas is attempting to escape his abusive marriage.

The antagonism between these two is crucial to the plot and people who are reducing Stella’s character to a display of misogyny on the writer’s part either don’t get basic media literacy or are just bad faith critics.

I hate how they made Stella so dumb to the point that I question how she survived in Hell for so long because of how intellectually, politically, powerfully, and emotionally inadequate she is. I'm surprised she hasn't been assassinated, or been killed off by an enraged noble, or gotten killed by one of the carnivorous plants.

It is impossible that she has survived this long IN HELL! In Hell POLITICS especially! Shit is probably GoT on steroids and more magic.

Now when people say that, "It's Hell of course she's horrible," I just laugh because they're right, she is horrible. Horrible at being A NOBLE in HELL!

Someone who survived so long being betrothed and married to one of the most important members of Hell politics and no one tried to vie for her position? No one has ever challenged her to actually think?

Thinking about Stolas’s transformation after he met Blitz from Stella's perspective is actually super fucking funny, like for almost 20 years she had a passive, boring, sexless (to her) husband, and then he gets dicked down ONCE and he's walking around like That Bitch and saying things like "people want our money AND our bodies," like fuck her for real but Blitz did Some Things to his whole psyche

As somebody who is also a fan of Alastor, I feel that if you like/simp for him, good for you, but you instantly lose all privileges for shaming people who like other antagonists in the Hazbin/Helluva verse.

Yes, Alastor is funny and charming, but he’s also a bloodthirsty cannibalistic serial killer who doesn’t even try to hide the fact that he’s helping out for personal gain.

Again. If you love him, there’s nothing wrong with that. You’re just not allowed to unironically publicly shame or judge people who are fans of other characters such as Striker, Stella, Vox, or even Valentino. (And actually, you shouldn’t do that regardless.)

It’s all FICTIONAL. People are allowed to like characters because they’re not real and fun to watch. Liking evil character’s DOES NOT equal commending their actions.
