Every time I see fanart of aventurine after showering, after a bath with ratio or just with his hair wet, I wonder if his hairstyle would revert to straight bangs (e.g. his hairstyle before he joined the IPC) or if he would wear his default side-swept bangs. Artists usually draw his hair styled after a shower, but I personally think that he would also look really good with his bangs down. It gives him like totally different vibes (I want to believe he looks more serious or contemplative, it's a gap moe thing for me)

Like, imagine aventurine pinning ratio to the bed and his hair is disheveled and partially covers his eyes and makes him look like he wants to devour him and- ok I'll stop here, I'm getting off on a tangent

Aventurine seems to have really thick but straight hair that sort of waves a little, I do think it's pretty similar to my hair and all I can say is that it's a huge pain to handle. Aventurine 100% styles it with some pomade to get it to look like that and would frequent hairdressers to get it to stay that way.

After a shower, it'd definitely revert to the bangs and stuff he had when it's not styled! So it'd definitely have those vibes, I'd like to think he looks more laid back, more vulnerable and not so well-put together and grand as he liked to portray, a different texture to his handsomeness you know? Definitely a little more somber, a little more worn~

When he's like this, I think Ratio is even more indulgent of him when he's like this, just seeing the man underneath it all that grandeur and bravado that he can come to bring some TLC to! But of course, when Aven is down for it 👀 he'd really look like a wilder, more unfettered version of his well-put together self. AHHH just thinking about it. I want more casual, hair-down Aventurine...

Dr Ratio a brilliant engineer from a desolate, dying planet. The pride of his people, who could build sophisticated engineering projects from little more than sticks and stones.

Kakavasha the high-profile, celebrity philanthropist gambler from a resort planet that is all about revelry, not unlike penacony, but more of a sporting, luck-based games. Recruited into the IPC as Aventurine for his insane luck after he tried to finesse the Strategic Investment Department and the Marketing Development Department and pit them against each other or something XD

Dr Ratio's planet would have had a similar story to Aventurine's, where his tribe was turned into a political scapegoat for being too crafty. He'd have survived, taken in by the IPC and would have been exploited by the Tech Department until he proved his brilliance enough to enter the Intelligentsia Guild.

It's nearly the same! But it's fun to think about.

Given how Aventurine views his own life and mortality, how would he react if someone - say Ratio or someone he considers to be a good friend - says to him, "I would miss you if you died."

What kind of realization he would have with the knowledge that there are people who genuinely care for him to the point where they would mourn him if he were to die.

I think it wouldn't be a terrible thing to say to Aventurine. I always find him to be terribly lonely in the IPC, since he would either have a lot of racism and discrimination against him or like a kind of pity party thing going on because of his commodity code, so for someone he is close with to say that to him with sincerity, I think it would pull him back from being too reckless. Maybe make him think thrice instead of twice when he makes a life or death gamble.

The thing is though, in the heat of the moment where he would have to make the choice to throw his life down to stake it against what he wants to get, all those feelings cannot compare to the momentary thrill between winning it all and losing it all. I do think him betting his life is part of the struggle to control his luck, he maybe has an inkling it endeavors to keep him alive, and to put him in the most advantageous state, so he doesn't bet paltry things when he needs to win.

I like to think he would appreciate the sentiment but also harden himself against it, especially if/when he finds something he wants to accomplish, we don't know if he's got more motivations or he will get a new one or something, but like, he's a really determined guy, he gets what he wants, such things like emotions or feelings will not get in his way for sure and I also think he doesn't form a lot of close bonds because he doesn't want to weigh all that he would lose when he needs to make his bet. That's how he wins, he cannot lose his edge.

It's always why I don't personally characterize him as a man who longs for the white picket fence dream with kids and stuff. I do feel he feels accomplishment of his goals is better, but that's just an extrapolation of like, how he is. Ratio being the only exception as his sole drive/inspiration to want to live/win is also really romantic to me and I kinda want to keep it that way

When looking at Aventurine and him wanting some kind of freedom, do you think he's like a caged bird that when the cage is open he's to scared to leave the cage? Alternatively, if he does leave the cage he's overwhelmed by the infinite possibilities that he doesn't know what to do with all that freedom to the point where freedom becomes a cage.

Ahh I have so many thoughts about Aventurine and his perception of freedom, which I find to be cute because I always thought he's a lot more free than he thinks, that he is capable of thinking, as he's so mired in his own absurdism and nihilism that he cannot really appreciate what he has, and that is, I guess, a conflict and tragedy of his character necessary for the narrative to play with and for us to have an entire 3D character to come witness, I don't hold it against him.

Aventurine would be the bird who doesn't know what to do when he has his freedom because he has nothing to "fly to" and to "fly for" but it is necessary for the bird in the "cage" to want in order to have something to "live for" (ie, a purpose)

But see, Aventurine is not special. He is not the only one who is in a cage or not free. No one in the world or universe is free at all. We are all on predetermined paths because of causality. One thing leading to another. For example you had eggs for breakfast because that's all there is in your fridge because that is all you can afford because raising chickens is cheap and eggs are more nutritional than eating pop tarts etc etc.

Another measure of freedom is whether or not one is bound by economic constraints or obliged to fulfill responsibilities... There really is no true "freedom" out there, so to speak, because defining freedom in the first place is a bit tricky too. What is free? I am free to leave this post here right now to demonstrate my free will, is that all it takes?

Sorry if that gives you some despair but hear me out.

I would argue Aventurine is not exactly even in a cage at all. I would rather make the analogy that he has a "leash" on him (I know this is terrible to say about a former slave but hear me out) because the leash is very very long and is only rarely tugged, and a leash can be tugged on both sides.

Aventurine for one is really, really rich. Like he can buy something for trillions of credits rich without batting an eye. That an insane amount of money. He can presumably, go wherever he pleases so long as he is serving the interests of the IPC as his superiors dictate (which is who? Only Diamond tbh) and he is not imprisoned, one could argue he's stuck in the job but like... if he wasn't in the IPC what would he do? What purpose is there left for him? All he wanted out of life was to be happy with his family, but they are long gone, and he presumably entered the IPC in order to make a difference for the remaining Avgin, who are also all gone, which he only finds out after becoming Aventurine. So he is highly, highly purposeless.

This is the core, I think, of what makes him feel "unfree" because he either has the IPC or nothing. That's where he is in the story I suppose, struggling for purpose in order to gain a sense of himself most of all and to gain the sense of freedom. Because importance of *feeling* free cannot be discredited also, because even as I say everyone is fundamentally unfree, I myself don't really feel as such where it matters? If that makes sense. Like, I cannot do everything that I want at the moment. I would love to jump on a plane and go somewhere, but like, I'm not "free" enough to do that. BUT there is a foundational sense of freedom where I don't feel constrained by my circumstance. I am not held physically hostage, my thoughts are free and not being unwillingly influenced by others, and I have a choice in certain matters.

I covered this in my latest drabble in Nemo Saltat Sobrius, where Dr Ratio discusses and presents *some* manner of freedom in the form of a perspective for Aventurine. We may be constrained by a lot of things, but we are free-est if we are able to choose, and to choose well. And I think, Aventurine, for all that he feels he is in his gilded imprisonment, should still able to do this where he is in the story, so eh, I don't feel like he's necessarily too bad-off (as opposed to well-off) within the IPC sorry it's not that dramatic.

Anyway sorry to circle back to Aventio and to "what-ifs" but yeah. I have a LOT of thoughts about Aventurine and freedom as just demonstrated there. Sorry it's so long lmao.

What types of horror stories would Ratio and Aventurine like? Would they enjoy existential/psychological, ones with monsters, slasher, 80s horror, horror comedy, etc.

Mostly all of it other than the religious horror I feel (unless it's really thoughtful? Like Begotten...) but then they might have some fun Aeon-themed movies/vids/immersia in HSR-verse so anything is free game. In general--

Ratio would like the thoughtful ones, anything deep and abstract so more psychological leaning, more about people and the madness of the mind in a way. Aventurine would like monster horror with a lot of action

Existential and psychological horror would be the things they would really enjoy I feel. I do still imagine them having a long talk about SOMA the game simply because I do really feel that game informs someone of their values/what they hold in importance. There's just a lot for them to talk about with horror like that and I think rather than being afraid they do feel that "wow I'm glad we won't experience that" feeling and cuddle harder XD

I do think they also have fun with monster horror thrillers etc, I think Ratio gets jumpscared sometimes and spills his popcorn (Mr Unfazed Poker Face Aventurine only very rarely!) haha very cute to think about.

You're so right for toxic fubu aven, I wish people would stop equating him as someone who has no choice or control over what happens when in most scenes he's the one with the high ground and authority over the situation.

How do you think Ratio and Aven in his toxic fubu era would interact ?

Sometimes I feel like I'm putting the dial up to 11 a little too much, because Aventurine has always been a sweetheart on the outside, and toxic fubu is a little "one-facet" read on him but like, I just really am tired of him being characterized as a baby damsel uwu uke when he's actually a dudebro deep down. People are free to characterize how they like but like, I am also free to call it out as an interpretation that has gone a little too out there and it's not in the "spirit" of the character anymore.

Anyway

My friend on twitter succinctly puts it— "Aventurine is always where he wants to be, whether or not he is happy about it is another question entirely" and I have been thinking long and hard about this, to ne he is "where he is most advantageous in position" such as being a Stoneheart in the IPC but whether or not he is happy to be there is irrelevant, he is where he would be able to do what he wants with the most effectivity etc etc. His cornerstone is literally "Stratagems" which is also turning a bad situation into a good one.

So regarding uhh how Aventurine would be with Ratio during this era— I don't touch upon this in fics because I am waiting for Diamond appearance, but my personal headcanon is that Diamond periodically sends moles as potential partners to Aventurine as a way to fuck with him and potentially gain more influence/control over him. I kinda want to explain his fuck boy-ness through this, he knows he's being lead on, he is being baited, and he's playing the game and using the people sent to him in turn.

If Ratio met him during this time, I do believe Aventurine would still like, fall in love with him at first sight (let's say the Final Victor LC and my fic shenanigans where I imply Aventurine influenced bringing Ratio over to the IPC/IG was a thing) he'd be so smitten... he'd realize he doesn't want any other partner except Ratio, he doesn't even get off properly anymore (he's still the best at fucking though) and all his thoughts is consumed by how he's going to have Dr Veritas Ratio in his bed and his life.

He would really start a courtship with Ratio, he would like, get advise from various anonymous places to figure out how to woo the Doctor. He'd engineer a way to meet him and have introductions made. Give flowers, write letters (commissioned ones but he'd also add personal touches) and basically do all that until Dr Ratio agrees to go out to coffee with him (Not even dinner ToT coz Ratio is so hard to get to know) and they'll build from there, all the while Aven wouldn't be doing the casual sex anymore (much to Sugilite's sadness :()

Opinion on sunday x ratio...

You know I really love the idea. I really do.

Sunday and Ratio are both ubermench types. The only difference is Sunday is the kind who thinks it's his job to do everything and shepherd the weak, Ratio on the otherhand expresses his ubermench-ness by imparting truth and knowledge to others so they may be fledgling ubermenches. I think that's neat! They will definitely get along in some places, but Ratio would see Sunday's goals as something not inherently in favor of humanity and disagree with him... anyway that's not what a ship makes but I thought it was neat to explore that

If I was a better skilled brainrotter I would have been able to find a premise for their attraction already but Sunday really reads as a distant guy who would be hard-pressed to *desire* the company of anyone other than Robin to be honest and Ratio is too much of a look-see-observe kind of guy to seriously approach anyone for more than curiosity's sake, but I do think if they got together it'd be the slowest of burns, maybe Ratio had to be in Penacony for awhile, and they happen to increase friendship points over needing one another for a certain kind of research (maybe into dreams and stuff) and the mutual attraction builds. Sunday would need to initiate, I really don't see Ratio as the type to start anything at all

But if they ever do hit it off, I do imagine it as not a really long-lived kinda thing? Sunday will be so burdened by his Order agenda, Ratio will see Sunday going down a path he doesn't agree with and will be fail to stop him... Anyway I think it'd be a deep, heartfelt romance, not exactly whirlwind, but two lonely souls who really understand each other but aren't really what each other needs is the read. Maybe it could change when Sunday gets more story! Who knows!

Random anon here, just read about your crazy batshit aven (love him btw!!) And couldn’t help but think about... 😭😭 This is just my personal take of course, sorry if it wasn't what was supposed to be taken from it, english is not my 1st language so bear with me a little. Also I am. a savior complex bpd ratio truther ill explain sometime else (differences and similarities between autism and bpd)

In the end, Aventurine is still no different from those who idolise him, put him on a pedestal, love him for being *the* Dr. Veritas Ratio. It’s something he takes pridefully, yes— It’s somebody he helped, someone he saved one way or another. Still, he cant help but feel just a bit lonely. He has no idea where they stand— Is he just an obsession to aventurine? Are they friends? This might've been the first time he's ever felt so close to somebody, and he's just...unsure.

Sorry if it isn't your sort of take, also sorry if my Ratio is ooc. I projected onto him a little too much and can't let go. Just found it interesting the way you talk about Aventurine’s obsession to Ratio and not, well, how the man himself would've felt about it, if he even knew in the first place

It's alright if your takes are different! I think fandom's all about sharing these sorts of things anyway and it's like, nice to be able to have the differences in opinion (I know that's rich coming from me who frequently dislikes certain facets of the other lane but lol I try to be open minded really)

I do however don't think Ratio has that big of a savior complex. It's there, but it's definitely part of the ubermench thing in my essay which kinda toes the line at him having it but it's not as bad? Sunday is the one who has it more

And regarding Aventurine's brand of worshiping of Ratio, I am actually touching upon it in a fic, but I always thought that Ratio would think it's different simply because Aventurine always insists somehow to be more touchy feely with him, to experience him in a sense, rather than just see him as someone put on a pedestal to be admired and to watch as he dispenses his little "magic tricks" or "miracles" through his knowledge.

There's a marked difference, although it is the same. Aventurine's love and yearning for Veritas is something that both fascinating in a sense that no one has ever really done the things Aventurine has to Ratio, and a little daunting (like one would feel before embarking on an adventure) idk if I can successfully capture this in the WIP but this is the intent there

And really, it's hard to get both of these characters, even I admit I only explore facets of them because it's hard to really get both Aven and Ratio 100% but again, some takes are more believable than others ;)

What would you say is the pivotal moment Ratio and Aventurine realized they were attracted to each other both romantically and sexually?

I fully subscribe to the headcanon that Aventurine and Ratio met face to face first during the events of the Final Victor LC when I wrote my fic Audentis Fortuna Iuvat, I had the impression that Aventurine was already extremely besotted with Ratio (due to basically propping him up as a figure of salvation/inspiration covered in the series of fics lol) and could not help but just yearn for any encounter with him of the physical sense, just to like, have a "piece" of Ratio so to speak. Sexual tension was off the charts, he was really gunning to do Ratio in that hallway/storage closet and whatever comes next is something he was betting on to be positive, but not really knowing how it would take form. He was always already there in the attraction to Ratio in both senses for me, part of his unhingedness if you will.

It was a gamble for Aventurine if Ratio would reciprocate at all, but lucky for Aventurine, Ratio was very taken aback by the bold desire in Aventurine and somehow resonated with that physically at first, then the more he thought about it, the more he kind of resonated with the underlying reasons behind it (Aventurine's yearning, his loneliness, the singular focus/devotion to Veritas Ratio himself) when he started to think about it more. (I'm still working on the fic that tackles this, basically Ratio getting his feelings ironed out with regards to the whirlwind that happened between them in Audentis)

And I think fundamentally Ratio and Aventurine are just two very, very lonely people who found each other, as equals in ability, as polar opposites, who complement each other very well, and the more they worked together the more they realized this, the romantic attraction definitely came after all the sex they have (they are also physically compatible)

I think Ratio ultimately realized he would love Aventurine in my fic Nitimur in Vetitum, which I deliberately wrote as Veritas' "revelation" moment. Aventurine deliberately started showing the bad sides of him and was trying this bit where he would drive Ratio away so he wouldn't have "something to lose" during his mission at Penacony and he would be able to give it his all 100% and if he dies he would do so without regrets. He was really vulnerable here, and Ratio sort of saw Aventurine without the mask, without the pretenses, and whoever Ratio found underneath that mask was someone he could open his heart to and let him find a home there.

They of course, have not really talked about their feelings, Aventurine "confesses" but Ratio does not really hear it, they never really talk about it but expressed it all physically in bed. Despite knowing the strength of each other's feelings and reaching an understanding, there are many more things between them they have to work on such as talking to each other more, opening up with words... and I like keeping them there for future potential fics lol idk

I loved your headcanon of Ratio being a gundam fan. What other media franchises would you think he would geek over and give a 3 hour lecture on why he thinks they're the greatest? He would totally also geek out over the time mechanics in Legacy of Kain series and resonate with the existentialist themes of defeating determinism and being able to control one's own fate. I see him as a Kantian Deontologist though (someone who believes all good actions derive from good intentions in order to be good) so he would be horrified at the actions of the characters and the events that spun from this in the first place, but he'd still appreciate it and talk about it a lot.

I also know he and Aventurine would have a long, long talk about the events of SOMA (very very good game). It's a neat little game that extensively covers what it means to have a "soul" and presents a lot of questions about consciousness, the importance of memories in identity, quality of life, hope after the end etc etc and is an endless trove of thought exercises about stuff he might be pondering on (part of me feels like Ratio is debating between himself to put both him and Aventurine in the divergent universe as a little wish fulfillment for Aventurine to have better outcome in life in some way and for them to meet in another life)

Figure he'd also love Evangelion if he loves Gundam and see a little of himself in Shinji. He'd understand that boy.

And yes, he would also really love Nier. Both Replicant and Automata would really resonate. Nier deals a lot with the crushing weight of meaninglessness of existence, the extent one should pursue one's desires, letting go of what was in order to make room for what could be etc etc. He'd like those things, I feel, very human and very resonant with his own struggle for meaningful pursuits.

I like headcanoning that Aventurine struggles with a lot of questions about freedom, and Ratio carefully answers his concerns about them. Let me offer you some ranting about misc. greek philosophies.

Apollo represents harmony, progress, clarity, logic and the principle of individuation, whereas Dionysus represents disorder, intoxication, emotion, ecstasy and unity. For example, apollonian philosophy is centered around rationality, stability and structure, and they focus on visual arts. Whereas Dionysian philosophy is about passion, instinct, intoxication and musical arts.

Sapphire (stoneheart) has a lot of apollo references: Griffin, the stone, rational means over the ends (hence voting for aventurine to be punished due to breaking the stone) And!! So does Ratio!!

Amethysts are associated with Dionysus, who has a lot of philosophy that aligns with Aventurine's way of life.

Nietzsche also has these! Apollonian is all about calm and reason, while Dionysian is chaotic and irrational. I do agree they are both very representative of the opposing forces of Ratio and Aventurine but ultimately complementary (Apollo and Dionysus are both gods of music, but different kinds)

I really feel like HYV cooked them so hard to be parallel complements of each other, especially since they also embody Yin and Yang respectively. Ratio being the silently nurturing Yin and Aventurine being the bright and active Yang.

Also, when you mentioned Sapphire Stoneheart having Apollonian references I was like what is Ratio a secret Stoneheart and he voted for Aventurine to get it and my mind had an entire party about that. Thanks! I read someone's thread once that Ratio's stone on his chestpiece is a Pink Sapphire which is supposed to closely represent him. Anyway.

Aventurine being very Dionysian suits him as someone who sort of straddles some of the principles of hedonism. I think it's very much part of how he deals with absurdism, considering he's got the resources to do so. Was just talking about how much of a substance abuser he is in my opinion, lots of balms for an emptiness in him nothing (not even love! but it's close) can quite fill, but he tries and tries (and it's the trying that counts I guess)
