A Master Finishes His Masterpiece I first saw Terry and Pat Ryan in the pages of Vintage Funnies thanks to Alan Light. Thanks again Alan! I have loved the strip for many years now. Terry and the Pirates Volume 6 1945-46 marks the last volume in IDW collection of the Milton Caniff masterpiece. The intro works will let you know the story on why Caniff moved on from the strip and started his other great strip Steve Canyon. As Terry and Caniff exit, most every prominent character gets to take a bow, for good or for bad. Even Connie and Big Stoop get to be heroes one more time and Terry ends up in the arms of April Kane, the Dragon Lady and even Burma. The World War II action comes to a close but Caniff and Terry were not done with the enemy as the evil Sandhurst makes his return. Even little “Nasty” Smythe-Heatherstone return, all grown up from her early days in the strip but has she turned over a new leaf? China begins to set itself up for the post war world and Terry and Charlie are right there in the mix. Go to Amazon
The First Great Graphic Novel The entire collection (Vols 1-6) is a must for graphic novel enthusiasts. In it, you can see the evolution of Milton Canniff and Terry & the Pirates from a typical simple newspaper strip of the 1930s with adolescent and crude storylines and situations to the first graphic novel -- a cinema-noire style of dramatic light and shadows, beautifully drawn, with complex script and unforgettable characters, especially the women, steamy, sexy, beautfiul and at the same time intelligent and independent! His settings become authentic, reflecting meticulous research, and he weaves in current events, like World War II -- can't havre a better setting! With T & the P, Canniff singlehandedly changed the field and paved the way for other greats, like Alex Raymond's Rip Kirby. Go to Amazon
