MBCNSW March 2025 Night Drive - Hawkesbury Lookout

Thursday was the March night drive for 2025.  It had been a rainy day in Sydney the day before and in the morning, so at lunchtime, the prognosis for the drive did not look good.   We only had a couple of sign ups and the weather looked iffy.

Luckily for us the weather cleared up and we were set for a good drive.   Our meeting point was Krispy Kreme in Penrith, where people could get a donut (or two) if they wanted.    We had seven cars come for the drive, which is a good number.   I took my 560SEC, fresh from the repair to the crank pully.   We also had another W126 - a 380SE.  The owner of this car was attending his first club event and the car had been in the family for over 30 years. We also had a good showing from the W124 contingent.   The M103 was represented well with a coupe, wagon and a couple of sedans.   We also had a more modern W203 in the group.

Our route took us up the steep and winding old Bathurst Road through Blaxland, before joining the great western highway for a while.   At Springwood, we turned off and headed along Hawkesbury road.   We stopped at the lookout to admire the view.   This time there were no other shenannigans from the locals.   We encountered a few slow P platers but otherwise the roads were pretty empty. After trying to identify all the sights from the lookout, we continued along Hawkesbury road until finally arriving at Windsor McDonalds.     It turned out to be quite a good drive and the weather held off.

I had no issues with my 560SC other than a flat battery when I set off.  This is not surprising, as I hadn't taken the car on a longer drive since December.  A consequence of the crank pully being damaged meant that even when started briefly, there was no charging from the alternator.

I know they kinda look unusual as a couple, but I think it looks more interesting ...

- Ludwig had luck, his stepdad is a patient, calm and kind car - he treats his stepson like he was his own and waited until he opened up

-Ludwig was afraid of him leaving his mother like his dad did ... But he got used to him and noticed how happy he made his mother, later he accepted him as his "uncle" (sometimes he accidentally calls him dad)

I only wanted to make an arrogant character/racer but ended up with a whole family story, but I am happy with this - Ludwig appears more natural with his backstory

420SEL parts car update

I've had the 420SEL parts car for a few years now, and I have been rather slow and stripping it and getting rid of the carcass.  I had done a deal to sell it about two years ago, but the buyer messed me around for about a year before he finally decided he didn't want it after all. Based on that, I decided to strip more from the car and then send the shell to the scrapper.  The main issue is that I always prioritize my actual cars when I am doing work on cars, so the parts car always falls to the lowest priority.

The thing is, I could use the space, so I spent a couple of hours stripping fuel injection parts from the engine.   These don't take a lot of space, and are good to keep. This included things like the EHA, fuel distributor, fuel pressure regulator and so on.  I'm not sure if the hard fuel lines are the same M116 and M117, I suspect not as the M117 is slightly wider.

Over the last year I have slowly stripped other parts when I had the time.  I used the motor for the drivers window on my 560SEL, and I've used various screws and nuts on the W124.   I've taken three of the four window regulators and motors out, the alternator, rear bumper and most of the interior.  I also took off the ABS pump yesterday.  There is not much left that I want. The main thing is the self leveling parts and the gullideckel wheels.   I don't think I'll keep the doors, I don't have space for something so bulky. I'll also go through and make sure there is nothing else I want to take off the car before I get rid of the shell. The interior is already pretty empty but there are a few wiring plugs and the like that are worth saving. I also need to get organized and sell some of the parts I do not want myself. I find selling parts online is so time consuming as people are always messing you around. It is handy to have the parts car around, but I just don't have the space to keep it long term.

“Engineered like no other car in the world,” the ads said, and to an extent that was true. The Mercedes W123 wasn’t a radically different car like an NSU Ro80, but the attention to detail in its design and construction stood out in sharp relief to many other cars when it was new. Introduced in January, 1976, 2.7 million were built over ten years, a record for a Mercedes model. A testament to their durability, they are still a common sight to this day around the world, 34 years after production ended. They were expensive to make and buy but you definitely got your money's worth. - The W123 was the capstone in a plan to revise the entire lineup of M-B cars (excluding the 600), beginning with the R107 SL and then the W116 S-class. Replacing the W114/115, the new car had a spectacularly wide range of powerplants and purposes, ranging from taxi-spec 2L diesel sedans to long-wheelbase limos to luxurious hardtop coupes. All had a friendly, modern look executed primarily under Bruno Sacco, though Paul Bracq and Friedrich Geiger were still at Mercedes in the early stages. The look was evolutionary too, following the W116 quite closely. The new breed of Mercedes look was self-consciously less sober, but not faddish or avant garde. - One of the most unexpected was the Tourismus und Transport version - Mercedes’ First factory-built station wagon. Until the “T” arrived at the 1977 Frankfurt IAA, Mercedes-Benz wagons had always been coachbuilt, primarily by Binz, who also specialized in Ambulances and Hearses on M-B platforms. The wagon, designed in 1975, didn’t go into production right away - it was built in Bremen and production began in April of 1978 after preproduction testing. - Almost every powerplant was available in the T, but options for North America were very restricted. The wagon debuted in mid-1979 solely as the 300TD with a 77-hp 3L OM617 diesel. In late 1980, the TD got the 125-hp turbo version of the OM617 created for the W116 300SD. A North America exclusive, the TD wasn’t as fast as the gas 280TE, but it was much punchier than the original 300TD. The First Step

Hello everyone.  I’m Chris and I have a problem.  A year and a half ago it was a harmless whim, a ‘what the hell, let’s do it’ sort of thing validated by a lack of disapproval from the Female Overlord.  It was the Summer of 2018, and I had been clean for almost nine years.  I had been so good.  I played the game the way society wanted it played, man.  I put on the monkey suit, cut my hair, got a degree or two, went to the fluorescent lighted office, moved the corporate monkey papers around, and was paid fairly nicely.  The Monkey suit outfit paid me in pocket-fuzz-hot-air-cocaine-paper-Fiat-Chrysler Dollars and I used a fair amount of those to pay for the financing of decent, respectable looking automobiles. See, a Mercedes Broke me. It was a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 wagon that was white as palpatine’s shuttle, and I was a 130 pound stick with no self confidence and delusions of mechanical inclination. And then my friend Mylan sent me a marketplace link and I failed a willpower save.  It was advertised as a 1982 Mercedes 300TD with 260,000 miles that ran and drove, needed shocks, $600.  That was July 7th, ish.  It was an 84.  The SLS was shot. Details. My nose has been a mess of black schmutz and I’ve lost track of timekeeping abilities as the  benders get more intense.  I’ve hit a telephone pole and spun out on the highway.   I can’t quit.  Now there are four benzes. Three W123s and a W124.  I have a decrepit Mercedes problem. The other steps of recovery are unwelcome.  Welcome to my blog.

Why my 1996 Volvo V40 is the best car I have ever owned.

In my young adult life, I have owned 3 cars in a space of 3 years:

1. My first car: A 1985 W124 Mercedes Benz Vboot which I bought for approx $500.

2. My Second car A 1999 Mercedes Benz E320 which I bought for approx $950 and got schooled with a $1.25k lesson on buying a used car in Nigeria.

3. My Third Car: A 1996 Volvo V40 T4 which I bought for approx $1000.

Of these 3 cars, I think the 1996 Volvo V40 T4 is my best car yet and here is why:

1. It was affordable to buy: At nearly NGN 380 to a dollar, I was able to buy my Nigeria used 1999 Volvo V40 T4 at $1000 approx. NGN 380,000 from the previous owner who had used the car for 4 years. He originally bought the car as tokunbo (aka a used car shipped in from abroad into Nigeria for approx $2,400 (NGN 850,000). He had used it as a daily driver from Ayobo to Ajah and the car was still running well as well as the AC. In those 4 years, he had only had to fix the gear once (because a careless mechanic deviated from the original problem he was called to fix and damaged the gear). Comparing the Volvo to other Japanese cars of the same year, it also cost less compared to the approx $2,400 (NGN 850,000) for a Nigerian used like the one I bought. It was also a manual ride so that crashed the price further as no one wants a manual car these days.

Point to note: When buying a Nigerian-used car to use a daily driver (aka a car you want to drive every day), try to find out if the previous owner was a daily driver as well. This piece is information is useful as it gives a deeper insight into how the car was used, repairs et al.

2. The parts were affordable to buy: Most people only look at fuel efficiency or how pretty the car is. While these reasons are valid for some people, I consider other factors. I think there are 4 major types of cars while considering “affordability”;

(i). Cars that are affordable to buy but whose parts are scarce/ non-existent/ mechanics are rare/ unavailable.

(ii). Cars that are expensive to buy and whose parts are also scarce/ non-existent/ mechanics are rare/ unavailable.

(iii). Cars that are expensive to buy and whose parts and mechanics are readily available but expensive.

(iv). Cars that are affordable to buy and whose parts and mechanics are readily available and affordable.

I think people who attempt to avoid buying a “common” car find themselves in categories (i) and (ii). In reality, (iii) is good but I would recommend (iv) if you are not big on spurlging on car maintenance like me. Sometimes a common car is a blessing and for the Volvo, it was a real blessing. My biggest expense in a space of one year came when I had to replace my shock absorbers, fix the brakes and clutch plate, do some bodywork and tweak the AC. All totaled at about $500.

3. Fuel Economy was good too: I said earlier that most people only look at fuel economy in a car before buying? well, that's because it is important. My 1996 Volvo V40 T4 would cost approx $21 (NGN 7,500) to fill up at $0.41 (NGN150)/ Litre for 50 Litres and would take me from Ayobo to Victoria Island with the AC on to and fro twice with all of Lagos traffic and my reserve light would not be on yet.

4. The 1996 Volvo V40 T4 was a small but luxurious car: I didn't know how small my car was until I tried fitting 4 adult passengers into my backseat. Long story short? It didn't work. Even as a hatchback, the 1996 Volvo V40 T4 is still relatively small. Regardless of its size, it came with leather seats, remote entry, 6 speakers system, alloy wheels, automatic lights, individual reading lights for the back seat passengers, plush dashboard (not plastic), cup holders, arm rests and central lock. It also had great legroom and headroom for back passengers and more features all squeezed into that car. So yea, I loved it.

5. Reliability? It had that too: The 1996 Volvo V40 T4 wasn't trying to be a luxury car with all the sensors, buttons et al and this made it practical and reliable. My car rarely broke down on Lagos roads and the few times there were issues, they were easy fixes.

However, regardless of all these amazing features, the 1996 Volvo V40 T4 lacked one thing that makes the Japanese (Toyota et al) rivals beat it: It lacked a strong second-hand value. A Japanese car will still command a great market price as long as the engine is still running regardless of age but a Volvo? not so much. I sold my 1996 Volvo V40 T4 at $500 approx. NGN 160,000 after using it as a daily driver for one year on the streets of Lagos.

Brisbane Car Museum - January 2025

The Brisbane Car Museum is quite a new Museum, only opening last year. I'm currently in Brisbane for the weekend, so went to check it out with some friends from the Mercedes Club. It is located on the north side of Brisbane, not far from the airport, and is quite a good setup. There is plenty of under cover parking on the site, plus a restaurant and then the actual museum which has room for about 40 cars. The collection changes every few months. This month (January 2025) the theme seemed to be 70s and 80s performance cars. Probably the biggest part of the collection was American Muscle, with cars like the Plymouth Super Bird, Dodge Charger, a couple of Mustangs and similar. They had three Pontiac Trans Am's lined up, each with the iconic Screaming Chicken decal. As well as the American Muscle, there were also some other performance cars like the Ferrari Testarossa, Porsche 930, De Tomaso Pantera, Jensen Interceptor and so on. Possibly the odd man out was the Mercedes 190SL, which isn't doesn't have the performance of its big brother the 300SL, but looks the part. As well the friends I was meeting there, we ran into another MBCQ member in his W123 230E, plus a W124 owned by a staff member, so the parking garage was like an impromptu Mercedes-Benz show.
