On the stage "Jane Eyre" is more melodramaric than theatrical
A stage adaptation of a novel rarely makes good theatre, and even a production as vigorous and imaginative as "Jane Eyre", which opened a three-week-run at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, last week, does not overcome all the obstacles which this kind of play presents, writes Michael Harper.
In his programme note, producer William Bryden shows that he is not unaware of the considerable problems and, if anything, his production leans over backwards in an attempt to be as dramatic and as exciting as possible.
Lawrence Collett's excellent settings are pregnant with atmosphere and, for her adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's novel, Helen Jerome (as the same programme more points out) "chooses to give theatricality to the most dramatic exchanges between the novel's characters."
COMIC CAMEO
And this is the real weakness of the piece for when it is parsed [?] down to its histrionic bones, "Jane Eyre" becomes melodrama, pure and simple. If this were all there were to the novel, then there would be little to justify its high position in our literature.
At the Belgrade the acting and direction are technically very good. William Russell excels as the strong and masterful Edward Rochester and Marian Forster copes well with the role of Jane, although her portrayal does not give us all the nuances of the character. In minor parts, Margaret Boyd as Mrs. Fairfax and Jill Kerman as Blanche Ingram are excellent, while Michael Waddon Pearce is delightfully comic in the cameo role of Lord Ingram.

Charlie Chaplin boarding a plane as he leaves Waddon Airfield , Croydon , South London, England , for Paris, France (1921).
At that time, Charlie Chaplin was promoting the film "The Kid". Charlie was very pressed for time, so he decided to travel to Paris by plane. He also showed great courage, because planes of this type were innovative and not fully proven means of travel at that time. Personally, he preferred to travel by train or ship.
Brief information: Many major celebrities of the day would make their way to Croydon for “first flights” on the new form of transport as international air routes were developed after World War I. Instone Air Line were one of the three London Croydon Airport airlines merged in 1924 to form Imperial Airways. Imperial Airways is the predecessor of today’s British Airways.

Walking the River Wandle Part 2: The River Emerges
For many years, Wandle Park showed very little traces of its namesake, which had been culverted and buried in 1968. However, in 2012, the river was freed, and now it flows between grassy banks, cutting a course through the middle of the park, attracting wildlife and rubbish alike. At the western edge it disappears back underground again, and here the walker must take a slight detour, first crossing the tracks of Wandle Park tram stop, then through residential streets and across Purley Way, one of the first purpose-built bypasses in Britain, and the first to have sodium street lamps (now replaced with more modern lights).
Tumblr media
Water is found again in the form of Waddon Ponds, which, somewhat confusingly, is just a single mill pond, once belonging to the monks of Bermondsey Abbey, and later used to power the now-vanished Waddon Mill’s grindstones. Nowadays the pond is mainly occupied by waterfowl, with rats patrolling its banks. At its northern edge, it spills into the culverted Wandle.
Tumblr media
Following a public bridleway along the edge of an industrial estate, the river is soon found again, now both wide and fast flowing as it emerges. As the pathway joins residential roads, the Wandle flows beside and even through the gardens.
Tumblr media
The walker has now reached Beddington, and must make a few twists and turns through the streets to keep up with the river as it runs around them. Soon though, it is an easy straight path westwards all the way to Beddington Park, passing by the large St Mary’s Church and the Tudor house of Carew Manor, now a school.
Tumblr media
Beddington Park was once the deer park of Carew Manor, but is now part of a stretch of largely undeveloped land that ends at Mitcham, two miles to the north. Here, the Wandle is easy to follow as it continues in a westerly direction, gradually widening as it reaches a mill pond at the edge of the park. The river rushes through channels and under small stone bridges here, then under the road, where it must temporarily be lost from sight again…

Landmarks like the IKEA towers, former chimneys of a powerstation here in Croydon are the reason I've captured Croydon landscapes for the last 11yrs in an effort to show the world we're more than this concrete jungle image they unfairly believe we are. . This account has also been a form of documentation of the change of Croydon during the decade I've been walking and cycling across the borough. ____________________________________________________ #ikea #landmark #londonpop #londonlife #uk #aauk #eastcroydoncool #LondonLive #cronx #croydon #cloudporn #mist #fog #agameoftones #powerstation #skyline #waddon #timeoutlondon #yourcroydonpics #yourcroydon #nature #urban #town #city #rain #rainyday (at Waddon) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4B71AMngRl/?igshid=hbfjbh92hweu
