What is 571 Area code?
571 is an area code in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was created in 2000 as a division of area code 703. 571 covers most of northern Virginia, including the cities of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William. It also covers the suburbs of Alexandria and Falls Church in Washington, DC. Area code 571 is one of the most populous area codes in Virginia and is home to many businesses and…

Washington D.C. has three airports that are equipped to handle passenger jets:
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (colloquially known as BWI)
Dulles International Airport (known as Dullas or its code, IAD)
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (known as National or DCA)
(there is also College Park Airfield, the oldest continually operating airfield in the world, a short strip in the area of the same name)
National used to be simply Washington National Airport, having opened in 1941. In 1998 it was renamed in honour of Ronald Reagan. To this day you can identify a DC local by whether or not they insist the airport is named National, not Reagan
In 2024 a Republican congressman entered in to consideration a bill to rename Dulles “Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The bill died in committee. Two days after Trump was elected for his second term, Congressman Addison McDowell re-entered a bill that is functionally identical, with a far higher chance of success
Imagine if that does go through
Donald J. Trump and Ronald Reagan Airports With DC locals absolutely fucking insisting that they are Dulles and National

George Joseph and Joanna Walters at The Guardian:
After Wednesday’s fatal crash which took down a commercial jet and a military helicopter on a training flight at Washington DC’s Reagan National airport, public officials and aviation experts are resurfacing concerns about how uniquely congested the airspace is around the country’s capital. As of Thursday night, authorities have said all 64 people on the American Airlines flight were presumed dead as well as three more on the army helicopter, making the incident the deadliest US air tragedy since 2001. On Thursday, during his confirmation hearing before the Senate armed services committee, Daniel Driscoll, Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of the army, questioned why military helicopters need to conduct training exercises near such a busy commercial airport. Driscoll told lawmakers that the incident seemed “preventable” and vowed to review army practices. “There are appropriate times to take risk and inappropriate times to take risk,” he noted. “I think we need to look at where is an appropriate time to take training risk, and it may not be at an airport like Reagan.” The US military has provided little information on its helicopter training activities near the capital and did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Martin Chalk, a former British Airways captain who retired in 2020, posited that military pilots might need to train in this particular area to prepare for transporting senior political and military figures to and from the area, which is close to the Pentagon as well as the White House, Capitol Hill and other buildings at the heart of the federal government. [...] No one answered his question, he told the Guardian on Thursday. “We lost more than 60 people, and two aircraft, and we shut down a major airport, and it was completely avoidable,” he said. “There’s so many places they could have been doing training. Why did they have to do it at the end of the runways of DCA?” Johnson continued, referring to the airport code of Reagan National airport. Federal lawmakers from Virginia and Maryland have also issued warnings about the excessive number of aircraft flying near each other over the country’s capital. [...] Lawmakers and citizens have previously raised concerns about the crowded skies over the greater Washington DC area, however. Last year, Bill Johnson, a commercially-certified pilot and a retired US army explosives expert, saw more than 20 UH-60 army helicopters fly over his house in one hour as he was working outside in his vegetable garden in Annandale, a residential community in Virginia’s Washington DC suburbs.
Prior to the deadly crash in the Potomac on Wednesday night, there have been warnings about airspace congestion in the DC skies.

So, I just noticed something about the purported set photos with missing posters.
Tumblr media
The first thing is that it's not a recreation of the original posters used when Will went missing.
Tumblr media
While the big letters at the top are more or less the same, the writing at the bottom is different, even if the photo and description would be filled in later.
Also, the phone number now includes an area code.
202 is an area code for Washington D.C.
In the 80s, Indiana would have had 3 area codes: 219, 317, and 812, being split roughly evenly throughout the state in horizontal chunks. Hawkins being not too far from Indianapolis would likely be 317.
It may seem silly to think the Duffers and set designers would know this, but they've consistently done their homework when it comes to authenticity.
If that is indeed the number that goes on the posters, then it suggests the number is being routed through DC. There may be government shenanigans afoot, though the heroes do still have some allies on that front.

I have had at least four calls a day from the Washington DC area code for the past week some of them less than 15 minutes apart. I finally picked one up and it was someone telling me to contact my rep about something I have already contacted him about. I asked them to remove me from whatever call list because at this point I’ve blocked three different numbers and I’m fucking over it. Leave me alone.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Public safety legislation unveiled Wednesday by local lawmakers in the nation's capital is aimed at bringing down spiraling violent crimes rates that have stoked public anxiety and prompted congressional scrutiny.
The measure largely repackages and consolidates previous proposals and temporary anti-crime legislation, including stiffer penalties for a host of gun-related offenses and wider leeway for judges to detain suspects prior to their trial.
“Pretty much everything in here are bills that were introduced, had a hearing and had a public process,” said Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto, who chairs the Council's judiciary and public safety committee.
Homicides jumped by 35% in 2023 in Washington while car thefts and carjackings both essentially doubled. The carjacking victims in D.C. last year included a U.S. Congressmen and a diplomat from the United Arab Emirates. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Lyndsey Appiah openly admitted before a congressional hearing last year that the District is in the midst of a crime crisis.
Violent crime jumped in several American cities during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. But while homicides have dropped post-pandemic in places like New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia and Baltimore, the trends have only accelerated in Washington.
The proposed bill loosens restrictions for police officers on physically handling suspects and when they are authorized to engage in vehicular pursuits. It would also allow police officer to review their own body camera footage prior to making their report in cases not involving serious use of force.
Certain elements seem sure to be hotly debated on the 13-member D.C. Council, which is split between judicial reformers and those pushing for more aggressive policing and prosecutions. One potentially controversial proposal would allow the Metropolitan Police Department to declare 1,000 square foot areas of the city as “drug free zones” for 120 hours, or five days. Loitering in those zones would be heavily restricted and those inside would have to essentially justify their presence there.
“It gives the police discretion to make that determination ... that this area can not be frequented,” Pinto said, adding that the measure is meant to cool off blocks that have witnessed recent cycles of violence and retaliation.
Pinto said she hopes to bring the bill to the D.C. Council floor next week with a proper vote scheduled for late January.
“My hope and expectation is that the council supports this common sense package,” she said.
The proposal has already received an endorsement from Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has worked closely with Pinto on recent other crime legislation. Bowser has fought multiple battles with the council over criminal justice issues; last year she vetoed a sweeping rewrite of the District's criminal code claiming that the reduction in maximum sentences on some major crimes “sent the wrong message” in the midst of a crime wave.
The council overrode her veto but Republicans in Congress took up Bowser's cause and drew enough Democratic support to cancel the legislation — an embarrassing reversal for the Council.
Bowser expressed her support for Pinto's bill, which incorporates several elements of previous proposals endorsed by the mayor's office.
“We know that driving down crime requires us to send a clear message that if you make our city less safe, if you bring violence to our community, you will be held accountable," Bowser said in a statement Wednesday. "I look forward to signing this bill into law and urge the Council to move with urgency to unanimously pass this legislation.”
But judicial reform advocates quickly dismissed the proposal as an extension of the same ineffective enforcement-heavy tactics that have been rolled back and declared ineffective around the country.
“It's just doubling down on the solutions that are failing,” said Patrice Sulton head of the D.C. Justice Lab. Sulton, who played a major role in the rejected criminal code rewrite, said the bill appeared to be “ghost written” by U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves' office, which handles most felony prosecutions due to Washington's status as a non-state.
The American Civil Liberties Union also blasted several of the proposals as either archaic or unconstitutional.
“The proposed changes to body-worn camera provisions would spread distrust of police. Such distrust undermines the legitimacy of law enforcement and erodes any sense of cooperation between harmed communities and the police,” ACLU-D.C. Policy Counsel Melissa Wasser said in a statement. "Similarly, failed and ineffective ‘drug-free’ zones do little to prevent crime; instead, they open the door for police officers to harass people and violate our rights. The District can’t make it a crime to simply stand around."

Day 9: Creation Prompt - "Stay with me"
whumpee: peter sutherland
fandom: the night agent
hi here's another night agent fic! sorry it's a bit short but i was Employed for longer than expected today and consequently cut down on this a bit. i am still kinda pleased w it though, hope you enjoy! also note that this is set pretty soon after the events of the show.
She’s curled up on the couch, idly flipping through a magazine, when she gets the call. She doesn’t recognize the number, but she knows the area code. 202. Washington, DC.
Peter?
It’s a little soon for him to be calling, she thinks. She’s no expert, but she’d been expecting him to be in his super-secret undisclosed location for a month, maybe. Three weeks at the least. A week and a half just seems too short for him to already be back in the country.
She picks up anyway. The call could be a myriad of other things, and if that thing turns out to be bad, well, better to know now. Anyway, it’d take even the most determined hacker well over two days of continuous work to find her location from this phone. She’s safe, relatively speaking.
“Hello?”
“Is this Rose Larkin?” She doesn’t know the voice. It sounds female, professional.
“Who is this?”
“This is Dr. Grosse from Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC.”
Fuck. This…can’t possibly be good.
“Yes?”
“I’m calling because you’re listed as the emergency contact for Peter Sutherland. He was brought into our hospital earlier today and is currently in surgery.”
Her heart is pounding. A thousand questions run through her mind - how bad is it, what is it, when had he made her his emergency contact - and she can’t figure out which to ask first.
“Is he…”
“He’s in surgery. I’m afraid I can’t tell you more than that at the moment.”
“Okay…okay, thanks.”
Rose hangs up.
An hour later she’s on a flight across the country, fervently hoping that she’s not too late.
--
She arrives in DC to good news - the doctor had called her back while she’d been in the air, and had left a message informing her that Peter is out of surgery and doing well, as of - she checks the voicemail’s timestamp - an hour ago.
She calls back immediately, already in the backseat of a cab, needing to have the words spoken to her in real time. Never mind that she won’t really believe them until she actually sees him.
She bursts through the hospital doors like a whirlwind and makes a beeline for the front desk.
“I’m here to see Peter Sutherland,” she says, slapping her drivers’ license onto the faux marble surface.
She illegibly signs the visitors’ log, illegibly prints her name on the paper nametag, and is led to the room by the same doctor she’d spoken to on the phone, who says that Peter is still fine but sleeping.
The doctor leaves her at the door to his room - private, which is unexpected but nice - and she takes a moment to look at him through the small glass window.
She hadn’t known how much she’d miss him, this man she’d known for less than a week, until that first night when she’d been in California and he’d been god-knows-where, and since then there has been this ache inside of her, up until this very moment, when she sees his face.
There’s a bandage on his cheek and his arm is in a cast, held in a sling suspended away from his body. He’s too still, too small. The ache returns, in a slightly different shape.
She opens the door.
She knows what she’s expecting - for him to wake up, snap those eyes open like the highly-trained government operative he is. So when absolutely nothing happens, she’s worried.
She approaches him cautiously, like a wounded animal. She doesn’t quite know why. And then she just looks at him.
His face is littered with small scratches and bruises and the skin is unnaturally pale. The only other visible bit of skin is his hand, sticking out from the cast covering his lower arm. One of the nails is broken and the knuckles are bruised to hell.
Someone did this to him, she knows, with sickening certainty. Anger flares up in her chest. He’d been gone for less than two weeks and this had happened?
She wants to find the person responsible and make them pay. She wants to march herself down to the FBI headquarters and demand an explanation. She wants to hold onto Peter and never let him go.
She can’t do any of it. But what she can do is find a chair and sit with him until he wakes up and stay with him after he does.
She turns to leave the room and almost jumps out of her skin when a finger gently brushes against her wrist.
“Stay with me?”
She whirls back around and finds herself looking into the sleepy but very much awake eyes of Peter Sutherland. There’s a lot written there that she can’t parse. But she recognizes the vulnerability, the fear.
She wants to make that disappear, but she doesn’t know how. She wants to hug him, but settles for very gently taking hold of his hand.
“I’m never letting you out of my sight again.”
He grins up at her, soft, open, unguarded, and that awful feeling in her chest subsides. “You promise?”
She links their pinkies together and does her best to match his smile. “I might go find myself a chair first. And then I promise.”
thanks for reading! i did have plans to make this a bit longer but it was simply not in the cards this evening lol. hope you enjoyed anyway!

A shocking 70% of the nation’s 1,036 majority-Black ZIP codes are considered “distressed,” while only 19 — 1.8% — rank as “prosperous,” according to one analysis. Two of those prosperous ZIP codes are in Fort Bend County.
If you weren’t familiar with the lengthy list of disparities that exist in America, you’ve likely been brought up to speed by the pandemic, which has provided a frightening crash course in the nation’s inequalities. The large and widening divide between “prosperous” and “distressed” communities since the turn of the century was seen clearly in the quick economic recovery experienced by those with higher-paying jobs and better educations following the Great Recession. Meanwhile, many less fortunate Americans were still struggling to recover when the pandemic hit, bringing with it an even greater recession and hardship. And like the disease itself, the COVID-19 economic downturn has splintered the lives of those who are the least resilient — both physically and economically — while those whose jobs allow them to work from home have remained largely insulated from the virus and financial troubles.
Approximately 50.5 million Americans live in a distressed community. But what exactly does that mean?
Distressed communities are characterized by widespread poverty, high rates of unemployment and low levels of educational attainment. They also face stagnant or negative economic growth, which means little to no change in the prospects of those who live there.
To examine how economic well-being is spread across communities and regions in the U.S., the Economic Innovation Group (EIG) has released its Distressed Communities Index (DCI) each year since 2016.
“Economic inequality in America translates into opportunity gaps for too many communities,” said Steve Glickman, cofounder and executive director of the Economic Innovation Group, when the inaugural index was released. “Unless policymakers in both parties reframe their priorities, economically distressed communities will continue to experience a downward spiral that results in a loss of faith in the American dream and less healthy and fulfilling lives.”
Communities are defined at the ZIP code level and scores range from 0 (most prosperous) to 100 (most distressed). Based on the score, communities were placed into one of five tiers of economic well-being: prosperous, comfortable, mid-tier, at risk and distressed.
The seven metrics used to calculate a community’s score on the index were no high school diploma, housing vacancy rate, adults not working, poverty rate, median income ratio, change in employment and change in business establishments.
Tumblr media
Between 2000 and 2018, the share of the U.S.’s Black population living in distressed ZIP codes dropped about 10% — from 45.6% to 35.3% — according to the report. Nationwide, 70% of majority-Black ZIP codes are distressed. By comparison, 20% of all ZIP codes and 16% of majority-white ZIP codes in the U.S. are distressed.
Of the nation’s 1,036 majority-Black ZIP codes — where 32.5% of the Black population lives — only 19 rank as prosperous on the DCI. Of those, 11 are in the Washington, DC, metro area, and two — 77545 and 77489 — are in Fort Bend County.
On average in prosperous ZIP codes, 5.2% of adults aren’t high school graduates, the poverty rate is 5.7%, 15.4% of adults are unemployed or not in the workforce, 4.7% of housing is vacant, the median household income is $90,800 and, from 2014–2018, the number of employees “in the geography” increased 20.8% while the number of businesses grew by 11.8%.
Tumblr media
Sprawling Sun Belt cities like Houston and Phoenix, the report points out, experienced a lot of economic prosperity in the first two decades of the 21st century, but the benefits “were channeled outwards and did little to lift many chronically distressed urban neighborhoods.” Suburban ZIP codes form a ring of prosperity around the distressed core of Houston.
These include 77545 and 77489 in Fort Bend County, which as a whole has the low, low distress score of 2.3 and is one of Texas’ largest suburban counties. It’s also one of the most diverse counties in the nation. Between 2000 and 2019, the county population went from 62% white to 31%.
The population of the 77489 ZIP code in Missouri City, which has a DCI score of 15.5, is 70.5% Black or African American. The median household income is $66,400 and about 60% of residents are employed in management and professional or sales and office jobs. In 2000, the “distress score” of Missouri City’s 77489 ZIP code was 9.6, also in the prosperous quintile.
Fresno has a DCI of 17.2 and 60.3% of residents are Black or African American. Fresno’s “distress score” has improved significantly since 2000, when it had a DCI of 45.9, which is the mid-tier category of economic well-being. Most residents work in management and professional, sales and office or service industry jobs, and the median household income is $79,900.
Tumblr media
But even within prosperous communities, there’s a gap in the average median household income between Black and white households, and it has widened in the past 20 years, from $4,987 in 2000 to $6,832 in 2018.
There’s also a gap in homeownership in prosperous communities, where the percentage of Black residents who are homeowners is 53.8%, compared to 77.7% of white residents. The gaps in household income and homeownership exist across all five DCI quintiles.
Today, 27% of Fresno residents and 23.7% of those in 77489 who are 18 and older have a bachelor’s degree or higher. That’s far lower compared to all prosperous zip codes in the nation — 47.2% of residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. However, among Black residents of Fresno, 37.7% have a bachelor’s degree or higher. In Missouri City’s 77489 ZIP code, that’s true for 28.8% of Black residents.
In November, voters in Fort Bend County elected Eric Fagan sheriff, the county’s first Black sheriff since the Reconstruction era. Walter Moses Burton was elected sheriff in Fort Bend County in 1869. He was the nation’s first Black elected sheriff. Walter Moses Burton Elementary School — one of the three elementary schools in Fresno — is named for Burton. The other two are named for Rosa Parks and Lula Belle Goodman, an African American educator who taught in the Fort Bend Independent School District for 41 years.

Obviously I can’t top these. Sometime in the early nineties, I was on the 8th grade class trip to Washington DC. One evening I decide to call home, so I went to a payphone to call my mother collect. I knew how to do that from inside our area code, but I’d never done it from far away. I knew I needed to dial a 0, a 1, and the area code, but I didn’t know what order. I don’t know what I dialed, but I got an operator, so I was doing fine. Until the operator asked me if I was sure I wanted to make this call collect. Why wouldn’t I? I was just calling my parents in New Jersey, right? Nope. I’d reached the international operator and I was about to call Egypt!

Rachel M. Cohen at Vox:
For years, the easiest thing to do about building new housing was nothing. The federal government largely deferred to state and local governments on matters of land use, and states mostly deferred to local governments, which typically defer to their home-owning constituents who back restrictive zoning laws that bar new construction. That’s slowly changing as the housing supply crisis ripples across the country. Experts say the US is short somewhere between 3.8 million and 6.8 million homes, and most renters feel priced out of the idea of homeownership altogether. The lack of affordable housing is causing homelessness to rise.
In Washington, DC, Congress has held more hearings on housing affordability recently than it has in decades, and President Joe Biden has been ramping up attention on the housing crisis, promising to “build, build, build” to “bring housing costs down for good.” But it’s at the state level where some of the most consequential change is taking place. Over the last five years, Republican and Democratic legislators and governors in a slew of states have looked to update zoning codes, transform residential planning processes, and improve home-building and design requirements. Some states that have stepped up include Oregon, Florida, Montana, and California, as well as states like Utah and Washington. This year, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey passed state-level housing legislation, and Colorado may soon follow suit.
Not all state-level bills have been equally ambitious in addressing the supply crisis, and not all states have been successful at passing new laws, especially on their first few tries. And some states have succeeded in passing housing reform one year, only to strike out with additional bills the next. Real housing reform requires iterative and sustained legislative attention; it almost never succeeds with just one bill signing. Trying to determine why exactly a housing reform bill passes or fails on the state level can be difficult, though advocates say it certainly helps when a governor or other powerful state lawmaker invests time and political capital in mobilizing stakeholders together. Given that housing challenges are not spread equally across a state, sometimes it can be hard to decide whether to pass statewide laws that apply equally to all communities or to pass more targeted legislation aimed only at certain areas. Partly due to pressure from voters and from more organized pro-housing activists, legislative trends are starting to emerge. More states and housing experts are thinking not only about passing laws to boost housing production, but also about how best to enforce those laws, close loopholes, and demand compliance.
States can make it easier to build more housing in a wider variety of places
While states typically grant local communities a lot of discretion in land use policy, more lawmakers are realizing that balance may have tilted too far. As researchers with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis outlined last fall, some states are now looking to increase housing production by enabling more multifamily housing and accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to be built without having developers first seek approval from local planning agencies or elected boards. This accelerated construction process is known as building “by right.”
For example, Oregon passed a law in 2019 allowing fourplexes (a multifamily home that typically houses four families under one roof) to be built anywhere in large cities and for duplexes to be built anywhere in mid-size cities. Before, a developer would have needed to seek special permission to build such housing. States like Utah and Massachusetts are incentivizing the construction of new multifamily housing near public transit, while states like California and Florida are making it easier to build residential housing in places zoned for retail. Other states, like Maine and Vermont, are making it easier to build ADUs, which are second (and smaller) residential units on the same plot of land as one’s primary residence, like apartments or converted garages.
Vox reports on how states are finally beginning to step on solving the housing crisis.
