May 11- Azabujuban Part 2 and Washinomiya
Tumblr media
For my first free day, I decided to focus solely on visiting anime sites that I had always wanted to see in-person. Although I went to Azabujuban (the Sailor Moon district) yesterday, I did not have the time to fully explore the area, and the local shrine featured in Sailor Moon, Azabuhikawa Shrine, closed as soon as I arrived. Being the eternally obsessive fan that I am, I decided to go back so that I could take my time and fully appreciate all the sites that were featured in the anime and manga. This included the shrine, a shopping area, two nearby parks, and a small statue.
Tumblr media
After I thoroughly took my time in Azabujuban, I prepared to make my way over to Washinomiya in Saitama to visit Washinomiya Shrine. This shrine was featured in Lucky Star, which is another anime that I have loved very much since I was young. On the way there, I gained a new appreciation for the way the train system works in Tokyo with trains arriving every 5 minutes. Apple Maps gave me false directions and I ended up having to use one of the station maps while I was already deep in the less urban area of Saitama. Waiting 20 minutes for the next train to come caught me off guard, but I was patient and found my way to still have plenty of time in Washinomiya. The town itself appeared to be used to people such as myself, as the first thing seen when stepping outside Washinomiya station is a dagashi candy store with a plethora of Lucky Star posters in the windows. Even walking to the shrine, I saw a decently sized Lucky Star mural on the side of a building that looked very out of place in this rather quiet town filled with rice fields. The shrine itself was beautiful with lots of open space and little trails built into its bordering woods. Most of the ema had drawings of Lucky Star characters, but, unlike the Sailor Moon shrine, there was no clear embracing of the anime by the shrine itself (which is understandable as its cultural significance is more complex than a slice-of-life anime). However, just outside of the shrine gate, there were banners hanging from streetlights featuring Lucky Star characters and an oden shop that sold exclusive Lucky Star shrine merchandise (which of course I bought one of everything). After coming back to Yushima, I was exhausted, so I treated myself to a nutritious Big Mac and Coke float and just hung around for the rest of the evening. I feel like I really made the most out of my free day, going to places that I only dreamed of visitng before studying abroad.

The oldest shrine in Kanto: Washinomiya Shrine of the Lucky Star anime
The oldest shrine in Kanto: Washinomiya Shrine of the Lucky Star anime
Washinomiya Shrine (previously Washimiya Shrine) is known as the oldest shrine in the Kanto region. It is located in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture, just North of Tokyo. There is a lot a debate over the age of the shrine. Some put it at 1900 years old, which actually wouldn’t make it the oldest. But the general consensus is that it is more than 2000 years old. Nobody contests, no matter what its…

Hiiragi Sisters From Lucky Star Are Immortalized in Man-Hole Cover for Kuki City’s 10th Anniversary
Even 13 years on, Lucky Star still holds a place in the hearts of many, including Kuki City, which was featured in the TV anime from Kyoto Animation. Kuki City’s Washinomiya Shrine is the workplace for the Hiiragi sisters, Kagami and Tsukasa, who work as shrine maidens for the Shinto Shrine. For Kuki City’s 10th anniversary, a man-hole cover featuring the twins was unveiled, looking for a street to call home.

Kuki City came about as the merging of the previous Kuki City, and the towns of Kurihashi and Washimiya, which was where Washinomiya Shrine is situated. As one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan - dating back to the Kamakura period, somewhere between 1185 and 1333 –, the shrine sees 100,000 visitors per year, which rose thanks to the shrine being featured in the opening of Lucky Star. Since the TV anime debuted, the surrounding area has adopted the Hiiragi sisters as unofficial mascots, helping drive tourism into the area.

Alongside the unveiling of the Hiiragi sisters, a second man-hole cover was shown off, featuring characters from the Railway Daughter promotional series, Akane Kurihashi and Minami Kurihashi, both named after stations on the Tobu Nikko Line. Minami Kurihashi’s voice actor for her Drama CD's is Aya Hirano, best known for her work as Konata in Lucky Star and Haruhi in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Water valve versions of both covers will also be displayed when the manhole covers get places in the festivities surrounding the 10th Anniversary of Kuki City.

The Kyoto Studio Set Ablaze Is Revered by Anime Fans

Kyoto Studio Devastated by Fire Is Revered by Anime Fans
Thirty-three people have died in a fire at Kyoto Animation. Here are some of the studio’s most influential works.
By Julia Jacob's | Published July 18, 2019 | New York Times | Posted July 18, 2019 |
The Japanese animation studio that police say was targeted by an arsonist in Kyoto on Thursday has long been a fixture in the anime world, known for its “slice of life” stories and detailed scenery that entices fans to visit the actual locations depicted onscreen.
Kyoto Animation, known by fans as “KyoAni,” was founded by Yoko Hatta and her husband, Hideaki Hatta, in 1981. Most of the studio’s production has taken place in the building that was the site of Thursday’s fire, which killed 33 people and injured dozens more. The Kyoto police said a 41-year-old man was believed to have set the fire by igniting a flammable liquid around the studio.
Stevie Suan, a professor at Hosei University in Tokyo who has a doctorate in Manga Studies, said in a phone interview that Kyoto Animation is known for high quality, meticulously detailed works — some of which have become hits among anime fans. From their artful scenery to the precise design of characters’ eyes and hair, Kyoto Animation is considered a standout studio with international appeal.
In an industry that often relies on contractors and freelancers to execute projects, Kyoto Animation has been lauded for hiring much of its staff full-time, Dr. Suan said. It is often cited as an example of a company that offers its employees a dependable work environment to develop their artistry.
“It’s a horrendous shame how much talent is being lost,” he said, “These are the top of the top in their industry.”
Some of the series created by Kyoto Animation can be streamed on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Funimation, a major distributor of anime. Here are four of the studio’s most popular works:
“The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” (2006)
One of Kyoto Animation’s early hits was a series called “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya,” a high school drama that turns into an elaborate science fiction story. The series is based off a Japanese light novel, a genre similar to young adult fiction in the United States.

What was everyone's first Kyoto Ani show? Mine was The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya back in 2014, and is an anime that brought me one of my favorite male leads ever Kyon and is a series I love dearly to this day. #KyoAniStrong #KyotoAnimation

The series featured a dance in its ending theme song, called “Hare Hare Yukai,” that quickly became an internet meme, inspiring parodies and performances at anime conventions.
As it rose in prominence, Kyoto Animation became known for its intimate storytelling and character interactions, said Patrick Macias, the editor in chief of Otaku USA Magazine, a bimonthly title about anime.
“They’re really stories about people and the relationships between people,” Mr. Macias said in a phone interview. “It’s everyday life through the filter of anime.”
“Lucky Star” (2007)
The “Lucky Star” series follows a group of girls attending high school outside Tokyo, including an intelligent female protagonist who is distracted from her studies by anime and video games. It’s a classic example of the “slice of life” genre, Dr. Suan said, which centers on everyday scenarios, lighthearted humor and lovable characters, in contrast to heavier and darker anime dramas.
naut #PrayForKyoani@nintendonaut
My first anime was Lucky Star, from Kyoto Animation. It introduced me to the wonderful world of anime, which subsequently inspired my interests in Japan and the Japanese language. You could say, KyoAni had a large role to play in the person I am today. #PrayForKyoani #京アニ

“Lucky Star” became an early example of an anime series that inspired “sacred pilgrimages,” a trend in which fans travel to landmarks depicted in the series, Dr. Suan said. One popular site is the Washinomiya Shrine, a Shinto landmark that was reproduced in “Lucky Star.” A more recent series by Kyoto Animation, called “Tamako Market,” galvanized fan pilgrimages to a shopping street in Kyoto, where they could imagine walking the same paths as their favorite fictional characters.
Certain scenes in Kyoto Animation shows are so treasured by fans that the studio publishes books with detailed drawings of the frames, according to its website.
“Free!” (2013)
A more recent Kyoto Animation phenomenon is “Free!,” a series that has also spawned films, one of which was released this month. The initial anime series, released in 2013, centers on a group of boys who swam together in elementary school and reunite in their high school years to form a swimming club. The plot follows the ups and downs of the boys’ friendships and sports careers.
Ian Condry, a professor of Japanese Cultural Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in a phone interview that “Free!” stood out in the anime world because of its visual focus on the male body rather than the female body. Criticism is sometimes directed at anime studios for their focus on sultry poses by female characters that are shot with the “male gaze” in mind, Professor Condry said, but “Free!” sparked a discussion about male bodies being the focus of the lens.
"A Silent Voice” (2016)
The recent Kyoto Animation film “A Silent Voice,” showed that the studio was skilled not only at telling lighthearted “slice of life” stories, but ones that deal with heavy human emotions as well, Dr. Suan said. The film centers on a deaf girl and a boy who bullied her when they were younger. The boy, Shoya Ishida, now in high school, wishes to make amends with the girl, Shoko Nishimiya, who was once his victim.
“A Silent Voice,” showcased the storytelling range of a studio beloved for its skill in animation, Dr. Suan said.
“They’re generally known for animation that is quite intricate, and usually on female characters,” he said. “But they have a range.”
Alex Marshall contributed reporting from London.
