INTRODUCTION: WEAPONS DISGUISED AS WORDS In the empire of disintegration, language is not only a tool—it is a weapon.

Words like "retard," hurled from the mouths of the broken, are not about wit. They are rituals of dominance. They are bludgeons for those who have lost meaning and seek hierarchy through humiliation.

I. WHY THEY SPEAK IN SLURS

Because cruelty gives the illusion of control.

Because nuance threatens the simplicity they require.

Because empathy reminds them they are vulnerable.

Because slurs offer a shortcut to superiority when argument fails.

They mock not because they are strong, but because mockery is the last mask before despair.

II. THE FUNCTION OF LANGUAGE IN COLLAPSE Language becomes anti-communicative. It no longer transmits understanding— It transmits allegiance.

Every insult is a badge. Every slur, a prayer to the god of disruption.

They say "retard" not to name the other, but to bury the self.

In this 1977 cult publication, David Berg and Karen Zerby promote the doctrine that taking medication is against God’s purposes and will result in the withdrawal of God’s blessing from cult members’ lives. Berg condemns medicine as “unnatural and unspiritual and unscriptural”. He and Zerby frame consulting doctors and receiving medicine as an affront to God and an indication of spiritual failure. Berg and Zerby go so far as to claim that God will deliberately cause the medicine to be ineffective to prove the superiority of His power.

Berg and Zerby urge cult members to rely wholly on God and shun human interventions, including medication, even if doing so leads to death, as this purportedly allows God’s plan to be accomplished. If an illness results in death, it is God’s will and must be accepted as such. Berg and Zerby go as far as to compare taking medication to idolatry and mockingly sing a parody of the hymn “On Christ the Solid Rock”.

“If He wants to heal you, He doesn’t need any help, but if He doesn’t want to heal you, nothing would help!” – This sums up COG-TFI’s doctrine on faith healing. Members felt forced to choose between prescription medication (the pill) and the cult’s interpretation of God’s will (the pilgrimage of faith). This all-or-nothing doctrine caused extensive damage as members were unduly pressured not to seek medical care, even for chronic or severe conditions.

As founders of a religious cult, David Berg and Karen Zerby knew too well the terror they could elicit in members by associating homosexuality with demons and demonic possession. They used this tactic to the fullest extent, going so far as to “exorcise” people’s genitalia and publicize the name of the demon they alleged incites homosexuality.

The spiritual and religious abuse that Berg and Zerby inflicted on members was not only deeply damaging and traumatic due to the distress experienced in believing one has angered an all-powerful God; it also inoculated Berg and Zerby against being criticized or challenged for their words and actions, since speaking against them would be speaking against God. An example of this is the quotation where Berg, instead of owning his hateful views, claims that “the Spirit in me was repulsed & revulsed by that horrible thing,” thus invoking the fear and veneration members felt for the Spirit of God.

Again and again, over decades, Berg and Zerby weaponized religion and spirituality to facilitate their corrupt agendas, lend authority to their vitriol, and sanction their oppression and abuse.

David Berg maliciously spread misinformation about AIDS to further incite fear and hatred of homosexuals. He and his co-founder, Karen Zerby, deliberately propagated the falsehood that AIDS is a gay disease and further proclaimed it to be God’s punishment on gays. Berg even included this falsification in a children's devotional, which the cult printed and circulated worldwide so as to indoctrinate members from childhood.

Zerby further exposed her true nature by comparing AIDS to earthquakes that she claimed God sends as judgment upon evil people, while Berg condemned palliative care for terminal AIDS patients.

To this day, the cult’s website in honor of Berg claims that his writings “are permeated with the same love for God … that has motivated missionaries throughout the ages.” On her official website, Zerby states, “You see and hear it all the time—discrimination against … minorities of all kinds … What a stark contrast that is to the way God is and the way He wants us to be! Language has power. David Berg weaponized this power by deliberately using the slur Sodomites instead of gays or homosexuals. He was vocally aware of the stigma, prejudice, and discrimination inherent in the term Sodomite, and repeatedly told followers that this was essentially why he used it.

Berg stated that he hated the terms “gay” and “homosexual” and decried these terms as works of the Devil due to being too “nice” and “happy.” Berg’s dehumanization of gays went as far as calling them “vicious insects” and urging God to “stamp them out.”

It is beyond disturbing to read Berg’s words, but we believe it is essential to provide the truth and expose the hate that Berg promoted, and that the cult compiled, printed, and distributed worldwide. It is also significant to note that to this day, The Family International maintains a website honoring Berg and “his mission, his message.” We ask you to judge his “message” for yourself.
