Comparing Sleeve Gastrectomy to Other Bariatric Surgery
Tumblr media
Bariatric surgery is one of the most efficient ways of treating obesity and sleeve gastrectomy is one such type of bariatric surgery. During gastric sleeve surgery, a portion the stomach is removed which results in the remaining stomach has a much smaller capacity, which physically limits the amount of a person can consume at one time. Your remaining stomach is narrower, around the shape and size of a banana. This results in feeling full faster and allows you to control your hunger and eat less food.
In this blog we will explore the advantages of sleeve gastrectomy over other bariatric surgeries with insights from Dr.Shashank Shah:
Sleeve Gastrectomy vs Intragastric Balloon
As compared to the Gastric balloon, the sleeve gastrectomy leads to drastic weight loss. Sleeve gastrectomy is suitable for people who want to lose more than 40 pounds.
2. Sleeve Gastrectomy vs Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery (RYGB)
As compared to sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery (RYGB) is much more complex as it involves creating a small stomach pouch and rerouting the intestines. RYGB also bypasses a portion of the small intestine, potentially leading to a higher risk of nutritional deficiencies over time.
3.Sleeve Gastrectomy vs Mini Gastric Bypass
Sleeve gastrectomy is more simple than mini gastric bypass. This results in less complications during surgery. Also, the risk of dumping syndrome after mini gastric bypass is much greater than sleeve gastrectomy.
4.Sleeve gastrectomy vs Duodenal Switch
SG presents a reduced likelihood of nutritional deficiencies in contrast to DS. DS entails bypassing a substantial segment of the small intestine, potentially resulting in inadequate absorption of essential vitamins and minerals, thus requiring ongoing supplementation. SG is commonly viewed as being more easily reversible compared to DS. When necessary, SG can be transformed into DS or a different bariatric procedure, providing a range of treatment choices.

Liver Failure : Symptoms, Causes and Treatment
The role of bile is very important in the digestive system. This is primarily because the bile acids help in breaking down the food consumed by an individual. The impure substances obtained from this process are then eliminated from the system. The production of bile takes place in the liver, but when the bile ducts get inflamed, the biliary fluid is unable to reach the digestive tract. This condition in which the swollen bile ducts disrupt the movement of the bile from the liver is known as primary sclerosing cholangitis or PSC. If proper treatment is not provided, it can lead to liver failure. Moreover, liver transplant at the best hospital in Delhi, Mumbai and other metropolitan cities of India might be needed.
Tumblr media
Symptoms
In most cases, individuals suffering from PSC might experience unexplained itching all over their bodies. Fatigue is another sign of this condition. However, as these can be indicators of other conditions, PSC can go undiagnosed for several years. Gradually, patients tend to have pain in the upper right side of their abdomen, high fever, chills, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, and jaundice. Proper diagnosis of this disease is possible by examining liver abnormalities in blood test reports and ultrasound of the organ.
Causes
Primary sclerosing cholangitis does not have any known cause till now. It is known to appear during the same time when a patient has inflammatory bowel disease due to weakened immunity. In some cases, infections or exposure to toxins can lead to the development of this disease in a patient’s body. Also, it is important to note that a patient with inflammatory bowel disease and PSC is at a higher risk of colon cancer. Therefore, treating these diseases efficiently is very important for the patient’s survival.
Treatment
After diagnosing the condition with liver function tests, complete blood count and MRIs, a liver specialist would prescribe antibiotics to ease the constant itching experienced by the patient. Vitamin supplements are required for PSC patients because their system is unable to absorb all the nutrients properly. To open up the blockages in the bile ducts, balloon dilation is needed. After this, stent placement is made in the bile ducts in order to avoid future blockages. Liver transplant is required for those who have progressed to liver failure. Transplant in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and other medically advanced cities should be done by the most experienced doctors.
As primary sclerosing cholangitis is a serious liver condition, diagnosis and treatment should be done by medical practitioners with a good reputation.
