Painting Research 2/3
Werner Buttner
Der Goldene Daumen
Tumblr media
Surrounded by artists like Martin Kippenberger, Albert Oehlen and Markus Oelhen, Werner Büttner transformed the postwar art scene in Germany, focusing on painting. Hence, the group was later being dubbed Junge Wilde, while following a neo-expressionist approach. Buttner is similar to Dufy in the sense of color use. Although Buttners isn't as peaceful presenting, the mingle of primary colors makes for a demanding, intriguing approach.
I admire the way Buttner captures emotion in his work, his use of composition is also appreciated.

Week 9: Artist research: Daniel Richter Interview
Daniel Richter is a German painter who paints large scale paintings, inspired by contemporary culture. He was inspired by expressionism - taking influence from Edvard Munch and James Ensor. He was born in in 1962 and studied at Werner Buttner at Hamburg Academy of Fine Art during the 1990s. His work can be found in Kunstumunseum Bonn and the Museum of  Modern Art, in New York.
In ‘Tarifa’ by Daniel Richter is a dystopian painting of a nightmare. The image is a symbolism of the refugee crisis in Germany 2016, where individuals from south asian countries are fleeing to get away from their war debted countries.
The painting is atmospheric, with his use of isolating colours in the foreground - showing the refugees in vibrant colours to connote to how they are singled out by foreign countries and their native countries because they have to flee to safety.  The painting illustrates the events as the refugees travel on lifeboats to the coast of Europe.
The use of vibrant colours for a distopian dream about refugees is beautifully haunting - expressing many emotions they hold through the colours, but not discising the vulnerability of their situation.

Gedion, 2002, Oil and Ink on Canvas, by Daniel Richter
This painting resembles a rave seen from the in depth space - the scene depicts people in momentum, as they would be if they were at a rave scene.
I enjoyed the way Richter has used the mid tones in the colour pallet (shades of blue) to form the shape of the characters in his painting, interlinking foreground and background together. I have used this effect within my own drawings - using the colours of the environment to interlink the compositional components together.
The way Richter has bounced all the colours off one another creates depth within the painting.
Overall, studying Daniel Richter's paintings has allowed me to source new ways of making my illustrations visually arousing.

INITIAL REFERENCES
George Butler and Ollie Cameron are both visual journalists, the former has specifically documented the refugee crisis in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2014 he helped establish the Hands Up Foundation to fund health and education services in Syria.
I’m really drawn to the work of the animation group Moth Studios, they tackle complex issues from child abuse and climate reality by honing in on very personal accounts of people. They bring in a human element to these subjects, often represented as abstract statistics and ever-changing figures in the media. Because of this, the audience can automatically relate, these people are no longer viewed as ‘other’; brought a lot closer to their own reality regardless of different political or social climates that they come from.
Daniel Richter is a German artist who was active in leftist politics, he was part of a wider Neo-Expressionist group of painters, including Werner Buttner and Albert Oehlen. I saw Richter’s painting ‘Tarifa’ at the Radical Figures exhibition (Whitechapel Gallery) based on a news image of migrants attempting to make the dangerous sea crossing from North Africa to the Spanish town of Tarifa in a rubber dingy.
