As more consumers shift to online shopping, businesses must adapt to this digital transformation. E-commerce offers a unique opportunity for companies to expand their reach and enhance customer experiences in a modern, interconnected marketplace.
What is E-Commerce?
Definition and Scope of E-Commerce
E-commerce, short for electronic commerce, refers to the buying and selling of goods and services over the internet. It encompasses various transactions, including retail (B2C), wholesale (B2B), and consumer-to-consumer (C2C) sales. The scope of e-commerce extends to digital products, physical goods, and services offered online.

What Businesses Engage in E-Commerce?
E-commerce, which involves offering products and services online, is a developing trend. Both individuals and corporations can employ this method, which has many applications. For example, companies sometimes use E-commerce to sell to other companies, such as wholesalers. In other cases, companies use e-commerce to conduct direct sales to customers, as when they use online marketplaces to sell products and services.
E-commerce frequently enables businesses to broaden their product offerings and tap into new markets. Customers may explore and compare prices without leaving their laptops, thanks to this as well. E-commerce websites also frequently provide discounts and sales incentives to customers and let them trace previous orders. As a result, customers may find it much simpler to locate the ideal products for their requirements. E-commerce, however, is not a simple move when it comes to industrial businesses.
Despite these difficulties, businesses have embraced technology to boost sales. Some companies have been more inventive than others and are experimenting with various E-commerce strategies. For instance, Starbucks created the Place mobile app to advertise its goods and services. The corporation is also experimenting with tailored interactions through its loyalty rewards program. Macy's use of e-commerce as a platform to connect with customers has also proven successful. The company's website was a complete disaster in 2010, but it is now a modern, compelling example of digital shopping.
Consumers can now easily buy goods and services thanks to e-commerce. Online shoppers can place orders at any hour of the day or night. E-commerce has also aided businesses in overcoming geographical limitations. Customers can use e-commerce to shop from anywhere and make purchases while they visit their homes. Nearly every part of our life is now impacted by the internet, including shopping. In fact, with revenues increasing from $30 billion in 2007 to well over $100 billion now, the internet has emerged as a significant influence. Additionally, the tendency is upward only. This method has been used to construct some of the largest corporations in the world.
E-commerce is becoming a widespread activity on a global scale. It has disrupted the retail sector and is now one of the fastest-growing industries globally. Organizations like Amazon and Alibaba are dominating the retail industry. Lone sellers are also utilizing this innovative method of selling goods and services.
Digital goods, digital services, and subscription services are all sold by e-commerce businesses. Customers who use subscription services can get a good or service for a nominal monthly cost. Several e-commerce businesses use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter for marketing their goods. Influencer blogs and websites can make money by promoting goods and services via affiliate links. Companies like Target have expanded their physical presence online, making it more straightforward for customers to buy toothpaste and action figures online.
Industrial businesses can develop rules for interactions and transactions with clients using e-commerce. For instance, many commercial companies might demand that users register before using their e-commerce site. These businesses must also ensure that their websites can detect different consumer access levels. For instance, while some end users may be led to present distributors, others may be able to investigate products and services on their websites. This strategy eliminates channel risk and restricts the acquisition of new clients.
Dropshipping is another type of e-commerce that offers manufactured goods to customers via a different source. This method was invented in England, allowing book publishers to ship monthly. Today, eBay features new products from several well-known businesses. QVC and Home Shopping Networks, which began as home shopping television channels, have migrated online. Customers can buy things at a lower cost since they integrate inventory from their suppliers.
E-commerce is one of the commercial sectors that is expanding the quickest. A recent analysis by 99 Firms predicts that by 2040, over 95% of sales will be performed online. E-commerce businesses also need to be ready to keep up with the ongoing changes in the business environment as the internet becomes more and more scalable. Smaller companies can build their e-commerce websites to sell clients' and big corporations' products and services.
Traditional brick and mortar businesses have joined the e-commerce revolution, even though globally accessible digital marketplaces drive most of it. In addition, the most prominent names in retail, like BestBuy and Target, have branched into e-commerce. Although the fundamentals of e-commerce are universal, several businesses have found their niches and created distinctive product lines and fulfillment systems.

So many transformation efforts fail because they forget the key ingredient needed to success
In the 90’s, if you wanted to wallow in misery, you had plenty of music choices from grunge to emo to shoegaze to death metal. One of my favorites from the era was Radiohead:
But I’m a creep
I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here
If you needed a song about not belonging and feeling out of place, Radiohead was spot on.
It’s like when I talk to developers at large enterprises. One long-time engineer recently described working at his company felt like he was a zombie. When I asked him to explain, he recited the lyrics to L7’s Pretend We’re Dead:
They can’t hear a word we’ve said,
When we pretend that we’re dead.
While he said it was a relief to finally leave, he is pretty sure his former employer didn’t even notice. To recall one of the comic greats, why can’t developers get no respect?
Nearly every company I speak with is currently undergoing some sort of digital transformation. So it strikes me as strange that the people most critical to the successful execution of these transformation initiatives would be ignored and unwanted.
Ford, GE, Nike, Burberry, and P&G are just a few of the recognizable names that suffered black eyes from their transformation. Depending on your source, either 70%, 84%, or 95% of digital transformations result in failure. One German bank has launched three transformations over the past three years and has shutdown each stunted attempt. The graveyard is piling up.
What would compel businesses to spend $1.3 trillion per IDC’s estimate to embark on strategic initiatives that will most likely crash and burn? Why the sudden attention to all things “digital”? It’s because they know that if they do not succeed, there are faster and nimbler companies ready to take their place. And these new competitors are not too worried about breaking things in the process of disrupting entire industries.
Corporate titans are waking up to the fact that the disruption is happening from companies that live and breathe technology:
Tumblr media
The attacks are coming from all sides. You have the US based FAMGA (Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon). You have the Chinese BAT (Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent). There are regional super apps like Grab and Naver. And then there are the startups all around the planet in every country. Did you know there are over 300 Unicorns tech startups now?
This is technology created by engineers writing the code that is the driving force for innovation and enabling growth in all companies, including large enterprises:
Tumblr media
The challenge is that most large enterprises, saddled with legacy platforms, did themselves no favors. From the 70’s to the 90’s, IT departments were thriving to serve ever more complex business needs. With reengineering, companies moved to streamline operations and costs by adopting packaged business platforms. Once reengineering wound down, companies treated IT as a cost center and wholesale outsourced most of their technology:
Tumblr media
Now we are in a new age. Competitive differentiation now comes through building superior and compelling digital products that require skilled developers. This is a renaissance of code:
Tumblr media
So companies are now undergoing a transformation journey to shift their organizations to become more digitally oriented. But what does that journey entail?
First step is to insource the talent and build up the required skills. Second is to shift the organization to adapt to a new culture that adapts and learns faster. Third phase is to bring in platforms that enable the organization to be more agile. Then the last stage is to create internal and external ecosystems to accelerate innovation and create better digital products and services that extend value across the delivery chain:
Tumblr media
The fuel for this transformation is not marketers or executives or people with “digital” in their title however. They play a part, but it is developers that have to execute and deliver the goods. Companies that find digital success have a supportive engineering culture, a deep talent pipeline of developers, a knowledge platform to allow their developers to be more productive, and active collaboration inside and outside the organization to foster innovation:
Tumblr media
Is it any wonder therefore that most transformation efforts fail miserably? It’s important to emphasize that transformation is more than just an IT-driven initiative, it requires the entire organization to adopt radical and often painful change. Without developers though actively involved in guiding the initiative, any transformation effort is dead on arrival.
Perhaps then digital transformation can be best stated as an equation:
When you have the right mix, the outcome can be multiplicative in delivering business results. If any one element is lacking or stalled, then it could cancel out the positive efforts in any other area of your transformation. For example, without the right culture, you will not acquire and retain the needed talent. If you do not have a knowledge architecture, you will waste the investment in talented developers that toil miserably in getting answers to questions.
Do you agree that developers are key to digital transformation success? What parts of this equation do you feel your company is strong in versus what parts need more work?

Bene Blog 2:
Start Out: Ideation to Reality
I am quite behind on these. I am writing about Feb 2021 (my mental timeline is already blurring and lapsing, so I had to check phone for accurate dates)  and now it is April 2022. In order to write what I really want to write about I have to catch up on the time.
We went on Alibaba and searched leggings suppliers. The median wholesale price per piece is about $8 + shipping (I should really know how much that is). We placed samples from 3 different suppliers similar styles I wanted to source.
Looking back, I was starting out a stressful corporate job (as in almost one year into it but not quite above the water in terms of performance). It nevertheless does not conceal the fact that I did my homework rather arbitrarily. Granted, it is a foreign market to me, I still let Guido’s “we don’t have those in Peru” be the ultimate evidence to my sourcing ideas. Maybe all of us starting out need some element of nativete and in my case borderline stupidity and lack of awareness, but the path to financial independence, I believe, is also path of incremental self corrective actions and strategies to counterbalance our own biases. I think, without much empirical evidence, that certain styles and fabrics will be popular in a country I traveled to once.
Guido stayed up at nights waiting for the WeChat notifications from somewhat eccentric Chinese suppliers. They are all hard workers I am sure, but some of them take their sweet time responding (issues prioritizing due to impossibility to distinguish seriousness from mere virtual textual exchanges), most are wading through the text conversations like experienced hikers trekking in a dark rocky river that they are otherwise familiar with at day time. The words they say or translated via some app, are all literally accurate, but they lost the connotations and personalities. Here you have it, a Chinese guy, born and raised in China, working in sales but most likely sitting in a crummy chair in a small and shady corner they call an office in a comparatively small factory with questionable labor and safety ethics, talking via an app and with automatic translation, to a Peruvian guy living in the U.S., about buying clothes for the Peruvian market, but the samples have to arrive in the U.S., and his Chinese-American partner is there silently watching both party overcoming language hurdles.
But we did good (!) in terms of categorizing and carefully writing out prod and cons list of every item and every supplier we ever come across. After all, we are keyboard masters and excel monkeys from our day job. The samples took a few weeks to come via airplane, the fastest and the most expensive.
In Feb 2021, when the sample finally arrived, Guido had a little photoshoot of me wearing all the styles. The videos are shared with all the Guidos (him and his father) and final orders are decided. Most of the decision is based on price. We already placed samples for the pieces that are within our budget. The Lulu type of fabric (Nylons) costs >$10, usually $15 or more. The Gymshark type (more polyester with some spandex mix) is much cheaper. Then we carried on equally ridiculous round of negotiations 100% via text exchanges. The Chinese are tough (preaching to the choir here), but as a Chinese person with American citizenship and having lived in the US most of my adult life, I have no idea how much a pair of tights cost. In my days (early 2000′s), those were $3 max retail price, but these suppliers need to make a profit, and without being there or not meeting the counter party in person, it is impossible to tell what the absolute floor price is. But we consoled ourselves by thinking that all the suppliers that we got quotes for have similar or higher prices for what seems like the same product (at least the same pictures and most times exact same model). Some day, I will visit China and decide if we have been bamboozled, or at least if we are okay with this level of bamboozlery.
And then there is the delay, and months and months of waiting. It is a mistake on our part. Once again, we relied on a connection that failed to make his promise. 2021 is a Covid year, containers and freight expenses shot through the roof. We, a feeble small business, is a direct victim of that.
And then the shipment came! Delays hit us again at the port. We are inexperienced importers and got inundated with paperworks, and rules at the port. The distance from port to our destination - capital Lima, is days away still. It was weeks before we have access to our order.

How COVID-19 Impacted on E-Commerce in ICT Industry?
Tumblr media
COVID-19 Impact on E-Commerce in the Information and Communication Technology Industry
Imbalance of fulfilling the consumer’s demand with respect to groceries and other essentials item has made the e-commerce industry into limelight due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the people have two options either to visit the supermarket personally or to order their respective product via online.
It has led to the rise in popularity of digital e-commerce web platform like shipt, Walmart, Instacart, Amazon and many more as numerous people finds digital e-commerce services reliable and safe during this time. Almost every customers practicing social distancing rely on this home delivery service the most and are willing to continue this for the next time as well. This has also changed the shopping behavior of the consumers on the geographical level. For instance, it has been witnessed that as compared to U.S., countries like Germany, U.K. and Japan do lack in shopping criteria basically in essential food items and groceries. This can be due to the leniency of U.S. law towards this COVID-19
With respect to shopping behavior while purchasing the item, people have begun stocking the housing essentials including mask, sanitizers, toilet papers and others. This act has negatively affected the overall e-commerce industry to some extent as the companies are failing in fulfilling the huge demand. Thus, this results into an increase in the price of essential items in an uncontrolled way due to this panic buying pattern. It just looks like everyone has to be the leader in the ongoing race of purchasing up unnecessary and irregular items. Based on the gender, it has been noticed that men are less concerned towards the ill effect caused due to this Covid 19 but are active in online shopping. Not only in U.S. there is an increase in new users downloading the wholesale mobile app but it also has be seen an increasing trend from India too. From January 2020, there is almost 50% hike in users who have spent on online and e-commerce app. On the other hand, in South Eastern countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore among others, it has been witnessed a decline in the conversion rates in e-commerce apps. To overcome this e-commerce companies are taking initiatives to shift the consumer behavior towards at a quick rate and have reached more than 1million users on the daily baisis
For instance, Blibli, an e-commerce industry in Indonesia has been providing an easy yet outstanding online shopping experience to its users and has reached more than 1million users on the daily basis through their awareness campaign KarenaSehatNo1 through app push notifications and email.
Changes in the revenue Across E-commerce
·         GROCERY
Tumblr media
Figure: Change in E- Commerce spending (2020)
·         OTHER E-COMMERCE CATEGORIES
Tumblr media
·         Figure: E-Commerce Consumer Sale (COVID-19)   The e-commerce industry has been impacted on both demand side as well as supply side. Virus related products such as soap, sanitizes, mask, tissue and others has witnessed an enormous rise in demand. Due to the imposed of certain limitation, some companies are not able to respond the changes or adapt it quickly.
·         Apart from this, it has been witnessed a downfall in the sales of fast-moving consumer goods since this time. For instance, in 2020, as per the survey by Digital Commerce in March, out of 304 e-commerce retailers, around 36.0% believed that the business will face a considerable downfall.  Shortage in the number of staff is another big problem which makes difficult for the companies to fulfill the orders. For example, BigBasket and Grofers stated that they have the access of only 50% -60% of the staff due to which their frequency of delivery rate has been reduced which ultimately has made a pressure on them for unavailability of the consumer. Likewise, Amazon too permitted for restricted deliveries mainly the essential items and has suspended the deliveries of certain goods due to the shortage of staff and logistical crisis. Kirana shops which previously faced a stiff competition from digital commerce platforms but at this period of time it is considered to be important destination for buying daily and essential items. Thus, Reliance has planned of digitally connecting with the Kirana shops. This will take place soon with the government tapping logistics firms to link these stores with consumers.
·         Apart from this, many B2B services who are involved into the launch of new platforms in healthcare sector i.e., transporting goods from like vital medical care supplies and ventilators. Many retailers who are especially dealing in essential goods have noticed a boom in their business. Companies engaged into the healthcare amenities consider that customers are indulged into continuous monitoring of their families’ health and fitness which ultimately leads to higher customer engagement. Even the demand for products related to cold and flu has also increased.
·         Online food delivery platform like Swiggy and Zomato follows the contactless deliveries in order to alleviate the fear with respect to hygiene. But still fear of strict police action against the delivering staff has also created the problem. Such type of hurdle indicates of institutional sickness like unaccountability and in affective communication amongst the local authorities which later acts as a challenge to the flawless delivery of e-commerce products.
·         Moreover, it has also been witnessed an upsurge in the demand of gaming, new platform and Over the Top (OTT) media.  For instance, in the first three month of 2020, Netflix, an online streaming service has added a huge 15.8 million paid subscribers. This was mainly due to the social distancing and lockdown in different parts of the world.
·         Thus, it can be said that few sectors of e-commerce will definitely boost not only in this current time period but at forecasting period too. But in contrast to it, the challenge will be of balancing up the supply chain by keeping vital safety measures for this pandemic situation. In order to run the business efficiently, it take lot of manpower starting from warehouse management to goods delivering. So, there will be situation like out-of-stock and delay deliveries and others. But Amazon, as an early mover announced of hiring over a million of people for strengthening its delivery fleet globally.
·         Regulatory insecurity as well as knee jerk reactions in emergency circumstances, cause more harm than good, as obvious from the government’s approach for the supply chain management during pandemic. The government must also provide relief to the small e-commerce players by permitting g them to deliver non-essential goods while practicing social distancing and hygiene. Ensuring regulation, restructuring of foreign investment laws and with better regulatory unity will definitely helps in enhancing the smaller e-commerce players’ growth.
·         However, the growth of the e-commerce will depend upon only on its service efficiency and adaption level with respect to general consumer psyche in long run. Mostly at this time period, companies which will respond better can able to tap better with the shift towards online purchasing.
·         E-commerce has even offered benefit to the farmers by making them to avoid middle men and intermediaries and to sell their produce to the wholesaler buyers including agribusinesses, corporate grocery, restaurants and others directly. This has benefitted the farmers not only with enhanced income but also with wastage reduction and enable financial inclusion.
·         E-commerce is growing at a annual rate of 23% as India, china and U.S. are known to be the biggest contributor for this growth. In today’s scenario mostly these three countries are only highly impacted due to Covid 19. In U.S. till now 10,000 people died while India is still trying to combat the Covid 19 impact with the strategy known as lockdown whereas, China seems to have a control over this pandemic situation. The China’s biggest e-commerce player Alibaba has contributed over USD 2.0 Billion of medical supplies to different countries such as Sri Lanka, U.S., Italy and U.S.
·         U.S. government is yet to announce any lockdown but the e-commerce stores are still working on and continuously involved into delivering products to its customers. Ever since the outbreak of Covid in U.S. companies like Amazon, Walmart and Instacart have faced a rise in the online orders. It has been witnessed that in first few weeks of March, grocery orders has jumped to 210% and is also expected to remain the same in this post-pandemic.
·         European Union asked the e-commerce companies to focused on manufacturing, designing and selling the products which are repairable and recyclable in the March first week. But after the rapidly increase of Covid, the e-commerce players were asked to keep a hold on these request and to continue offer the essential services. It results into building pressure from the consumer’s side with respect to catering huge orders on time. This leads to black marketing and hoarding of products and thus to eliminate this, e-commerce site put a restriction on multiple items. Such type of attempt has helped the overall e-commerce companies and even ensures that each customer should have an access to the essential products only.
·         In U.K. before the lockdown initiation, people got panic and as a result it has raised the sale of specific items including toilet paper, board games, crafts equipment medicines, groceries, home appliances and yoga mats.
·         China being one of the leading manufacturing and supply hub of B2C players in Asia-Pacific region, now due to the Covid impact, e-commerce companies are trapped and are facing a decrease in the demand as almost every country are into same situation. This has resulted China with a small market as the production is totally stopped and even freight ships are put on hold. To normalize this problem, it would take more time to put everything back into normal.
·         Singapore’s Health Science Authority (HSA) has detached around 3000 products from an online platform due to fake product’s information and spiked numerical. This was majorly done to enhance its sales and to make money. But the local government sabotaged the evil attempts of the sellers and e-commerce companies are dedicatedly working on delivering the essential item without being overcharged. License of the sellers were suspended who had participated in this money making business. HAS is also working on coming up with a system who will restrict and identifies such sellers from selling online.
·         In India, extension of the lockdown period has made the e-commerce executives to go to the government for help. A meeting was held amongst Honorary Piyush Goel, Commerce Minister of India along with leaders from DHL, Amazon, Swiggy, Zomato, Flipkart to grant them the permission of selling at least the essential items. In Australia, e-commerce players have adopted a defensive mode as they are continuously in contact with local municipalities and the government to deliver the essential items on time.
·         In 2020, the e-commerce industry was expected to do a business of around USD 6.0 trillion but due to lockdown and delivering of only the essential items seems that this number will not be achieved. B2C e-commerce companies can only deliver the essential products and services to their customer but in case players involved in B2B are under the lockdown completely. With the shutdown of the factories, in appropriate amount or nil of raw material, workers at home, blocked logistic services results into no product, no administration and no transaction. Moreover, the e-commerce organization has to keep their warehouse worker and delivery agent safe from this Covid infection. This can be done by taking proper measure like continuous sanitization of the workplace, access to mask, gloves and instant medical consideration to those agents with Covid symptoms so that the respective companies can serve their customers regularly and efficiently.
·         The coming month is considered to be tough time for the e-commerce industry as increasing number of death rate due to COVID-19 is making the government to release a curfew in many countries. The respective players have to work in close collaboration with the local authorities as well as the governments so as to run their business efficiently by offering in need with helping hand.
