China’s Kuaishou steps up monetisation of AI video generation services with new price plan
Tumblr media
Kuaishou is charging 19 yuan (US$2.66) for the first month of use, and 58 yuan per month thereafter under a ‘gold member’ plan for the video generation service.                                                                                                                                                           Chinese short-video app operator Kuaishou Technology is offering a monthly subscription to its Sora-like artificial intelligence (AI) video generating service, as China’s AI players step up efforts to monetise the cutting-edge technology. Kuaishou, the major domestic rival of TikTok’s sister app Douyin, is charging 19 yuan (US$2.66) for the first month and 58 yuan per month thereafter under a “gold member” plan for video generation services based on its Kling AI model. The plan, claimed to be “the lowest price among similar products”, would support the generation of around 3,300 photos and 66 videos per month, according a statement from Kuaishou on Friday.
The move marks the latest effort by a Chinese Big Tech company to step up commercialisation of products in the hotly-contested AI video generation market. San Francisco-based OpenAI, which pioneered text-to-video generation with the announcement of Sora in February, has yet to make its model available to the general public. In comparison, OpenAI charges US$20 per month for its ChatGPT Plus plan, which includes the DALL-E3 text-to-image generator, but not video generation. Kuaishou also unveiled two premium plans which allow users to generate 15,000 photos and 300 videos under the “platinum plan”, and 40,000 photos and 800 videos under the “diamond plan”.
Released in June, Kling can process text into video clips of up to 2 minutes long with 1080p resolution, while supporting various aspect ratios, Kuaishou said at the time. The company later upgraded the model to include some new features, including image-to-video, video extension functions, as well as enhanced editing capabilities such as start and end frame control and shot control.Kling, which was released after Kuaishou’s KwaiYii large language model (LLM) and text-to-image model Kolors, shows how Chinese AI players are finding it increasingly difficult to make money in the overcrowded market. That was reflected when a heightened price war broke out for commercial AI services. ByteDance’s Doubao models were priced 99.8 per cent less than OpenAI’s GPT-4, while a number of major players – from e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group Holding to social media and video gaming behemoth Tencent Holdings, followed suit. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post. When Kuaishou released its second quarter earnings earlier this week, co-founder and CEO Cheng Yixiao said the company would strive to achieve “commercialisation scale” for the Kling model as soon as possible.
Kling has more than one million users and has generated over 10 million videos, Kuaishou said in the earnings report. The company has also launched the first-ever AI-generated fantasy short drama in China – Legendary Mirrors of Mountains and Seas – which attracted over 50 million views within two weeks of its release in July.

My heads up in the cloud...
Hey there! 🌐 As I wrap up my journey through the Open University’s Web, Mobile and Cloud Technologies (TM352) module, I thought it would be of benefit to myself and to some readers to provide an overview of the module.
It was a good module that saw us build Single Page Applications (SPA) with React.js and use backend services like Node.js and Express to create API's and connect them to databases like MongoDb.
The second half of the module was focused on cloud computing and we found ourselves building OpenStack virtual cloud environments on our own hardware! (This was very fun!)
Introduction to Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is like having a supercomputer at your fingertips without actually owning one. It’s all about accessing computing resources (like storage and processing power) over the internet, on-demand. This means you can scale up or down based on your needs, and you only pay for what you use. Before cloud computing, setting up servers and managing infrastructure was a huge hassle. Now, it’s as easy as clicking a few buttons!
The Main Providers of Cloud Computing
When it comes to cloud computing, a few big names dominate the scene:
Amazon Web Services (AWS): The giant in the cloud world, offering a vast array of services.
Microsoft Azure: A strong contender, especially popular with enterprises.
Google Cloud Platform (GCP): Known for its data analytics and machine learning capabilities.
IBM Cloud: Focuses on hybrid cloud solutions.
Alibaba Cloud: The leading cloud provider in China.
Each provider has its strengths, so the choice often depends on your specific needs and preferences.
Different types of cloud computing
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
IaaS provides the basic building blocks for cloud IT. It offers virtualized computing resources over the internet, including servers, storage, and networking. This model gives you the highest level of flexibility and control over your IT resources, similar to traditional on-premises infrastructure. Think of it as renting a virtual data center where you can run your applications and store your data.
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
PaaS delivers a platform allowing customers to develop, run, and manage applications without dealing with the underlying infrastructure. This service includes operating systems, development tools, database management systems, and more. It simplifies the development process, enabling developers to focus on writing code. Imagine having a ready-to-use development environment where you can build and deploy your apps effortlessly.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
SaaS provides software applications over the internet, on a subscription basis. These applications are managed by the service provider, so you don’t need to worry about installation, maintenance, or updates. Common examples include productivity tools like Google Workspace and Microsoft Office 365. It’s like having your favorite software available anytime, anywhere, without the hassle of managing it yourself.
Serverless Computing
Serverless computing allows you to run code without provisioning or managing servers. The cloud provider handles the infrastructure, scaling, and maintenance. You only pay for the compute time you consume. This model is ideal for event-driven applications and microservices. Think of it as writing code and letting someone else worry about running it efficiently.
Everything as a Service (XaaS)
XaaS is an umbrella term that encompasses various services delivered over the internet. It includes IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and other services like Network as a Service (NaaS) and Function as a Service (FaaS). This model offers a comprehensive range of services to meet diverse business needs. It’s like having a buffet of cloud services where you can pick and choose what you need.
AI and Machine Learning Cloud Services
These services provide tools and frameworks for building, training, and deploying machine learning models. They offer pre-built models, data processing capabilities, and integration with other cloud services. Examples include platforms that help you create intelligent applications with ease. It’s like having a personal AI lab at your disposal.
Blockchain Cloud Services
Blockchain cloud services offer platforms for building and managing blockchain networks. They provide the infrastructure and tools needed to develop decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts. This is perfect for those looking to leverage blockchain technology without the complexity of setting up the infrastructure themselves.
Internet of Things (IoT) Cloud Services
IoT cloud services enable the connection and management of IoT devices. They offer data collection, processing, and analysis tools to help businesses leverage IoT data. Imagine connecting all your smart devices and managing them from a single platform, making your life easier and more connected.
Open Source vs. Closed Source Cloud Computing
This is a classic debate in the tech world. Open source cloud computing means the source code is available for anyone to inspect, modify, and enhance. It’s all about community and collaboration. Examples include OpenStack and Kubernetes. On the other hand, closed source cloud computing keeps the source code under wraps, controlled by the company that developed it. Think of AWS or Microsoft Azure. Open source offers flexibility and transparency, while closed source often provides more polished, user-friendly solutions.
Tumblr media
Introduction to OpenStack Cloud Computing
OpenStack is an open-source cloud computing platform that lets you build and manage both public and private clouds. It was born from a collaboration between Rackspace Hosting and NASA. OpenStack is made up of various components (called projects) that handle different aspects of cloud computing, like compute, storage, and networking. It’s highly customizable and can be tailored to fit specific needs, making it a favorite among organizations looking for flexibility.
Common components of OpenStack Cloud
Designing an OpenStack cloud involves several key components:
Compute (Nova): Manages virtual machines.
Networking (Neutron): Handles network connectivity.
Storage (Swift and Cinder): Swift for object storage and Cinder for block storage.
Identity (Keystone): Manages authentication and authorization.
Dashboard (Horizon): Provides a web-based interface for managing OpenStack services.
These components work together to create a robust and scalable cloud environment.
Tumblr media
Benefits and Risks of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing offers numerous benefits, such as:
Scalability: Easily scale resources up or down.
Cost Efficiency: Pay only for what you use.
Accessibility: Access resources from anywhere with an internet connection.
Flexibility: Choose from a wide range of services and configurations.
However, there are also risks to consider:
Security: Storing data off-site can raise security concerns.
Downtime: Service outages can impact availability.
Compliance: Ensuring compliance with regulations can be challenging.
Vendor Lock-In: Switching providers can be difficult and costly.
Legal and Moral Considerations of the Cloud
When using cloud services, it’s important to consider both legal and moral implications. Legally, you need to ensure compliance with data protection regulations like GDPR. This includes understanding where your data is stored and how it’s protected. Morally, consider the environmental impact of data centers and the ethical use of data. Transparency, accountability, and sustainability should be at the forefront of cloud computing practices.
And there you have it! A whirlwind tour of some of the key topics we’ve covered in the TM352 module. Whether you’re a seasoned developer or just starting out, staying updated with these trends and technologies will help you build better, more innovative applications. Happy coding! 🚀
Reflecting on this module, it’s clear that the knowledge and skills we’ve gained are invaluable. From understanding the foundational technologies to exploring the latest trends, TM352 has equipped us with the tools to thrive in the ever-evolving tech landscape. Here’s to many more coding adventures ahead! 🎉

📝 Editorial: 3 vs. 3: The Open vs. Closed Battle for Big AI
When the open vs. closed weight model debate started a couple of years ago, many thought it was going to be a battle between OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google on one side, and hundreds of open-source models on the other. Reality turned out to be quite different. The open-source space for massively large foundation models has been reduced to three key players: Meta, Mistral, and xAI. This shouldn’t come as a surprise if we consider that training a multi-hundred-parameter model surpasses $100 million in training costs. Open sourcing that kind of investment is something only a few companies can afford.
So GPT-x, Claude, and Gemini versus Llama, Mistral, and Grok.
How will this shape up? When the first versions of these open-weight models came out, they were a couple of iterations behind the quality of the large commercial models. That’s no longer the case, and this week was a good reminder of how competitive the big open-source models can be.
Meta open-sourced Llama 3.1, a 402-billion parameter model that scored at GPT-4o levels in nearly every relevant benchmark. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that Llama 4 should completely close the gap with the state-of-the-art AI.
Mistral unveiled Mistral Large, a 123-billion parameter model with a 128k token window.
Elon Musk announced the “most powerful” AI training cluster in the world, consisting of 100,000 GPUs, and also mentioned that they are training the most powerful AI by any metric.
Big AI is a game for big budgets, and there might still be room for a few more competitors in this race (maybe Illya’s new company). However, the space is not going to change drastically. It’s OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic vs. Meta, Llama, and xAI. One thing is for certain: open-source big AI is going to be competitive.

Uber Eats is now able to efficiently and simply manage the user interface (UI) of their app thanks to React Native, which also helps them maintain a consistent corporate identity across all platforms. Uber needs a framework that can manage a complicated collection of features and interactions within their app, and React Native fits the bill nicely.
Bloomberg
React Native is used in Bloomberg’s mobile app to provide users with access to financial news, data, and tools. Bloomberg is now able to provide a customized, interactive user experience with an emphasis on easy navigation and accessibility, thanks to this decision. React Native has made it possible to roll out new features more quickly while maintaining the app’s efficiency and responsiveness.
Microsoft
Microsoft has integrated React Native into a number of its products, such as the Microsoft Office Suite and Xbox app mobile versions. Microsoft’s requirement for consistent performance across many platforms and devices is met by React Native, giving consumers a seamless mobile document management and gaming experience.
Exploring Contrasts: React Native Versus Flutter
In 2020, Statista appeared to validate the worldwide pattern in the Flutter vs. React Native competition.
It’s critical to comprehend the primary distinctions between Flutter and React Native while selecting a mobile app development framework. While they are both well-liked options for cross-platform development, their approaches, strategies, performance, and community support are different. A thorough comparison of various frameworks is provided below:
Programming Language
Dart, developed by Google, is perfect for making user interfaces that respond to events. It’s the language behind Flutter, ensuring smooth app launches with Ahead-of-Time compilation. JavaScript, globally renowned, powers React Native for versatile app development. This implies that by reusing code and logic from web applications, many web developers may simply switch to developing mobile apps with React Native.
Architecture
Flutter takes a different tack by utilizing a set of uniform widgets that are compiled straight into native code, as opposed to only utilizing a bridge to interface with native components. Because Flutter manages every pixel on the screen, it can effortlessly deliver a unified user interface (UI) across several platforms.
React Native, on the other hand, renders UI components using native APIs and functions more like a bridge between JavaScript code and the native platform. Performance bottlenecks may result from this, particularly in intricate UI actions where each interaction with the device’s native components must pass via the JavaScript bridge.
Development Environment and UI Components
Flutter’s vast library includes a wide variety of highly configurable widgets. As a result, developers may find that they require fewer third-party libraries to create apps with greater aesthetic and functional control.
React Native apps use platform-specific native components; therefore, Material Design components are used on Android, and Cupertino components are used on iOS. This guarantees that React Native apps follow the platform’s design guidelines to the letter, but unless third-party solutions are used, it may also restrict flexibility.
Performance
Flutter’s Dart framework and the way it integrates the interfaces and graphics into the native code allow it to run better than React Native in most situations. Rendering can be accomplished more reliably and smoothly with Flutter since it doesn’t rely on bridging technologies or intermediary code representations.
Due to its reliance on the JavaScript bridge for UI component rendering, React Native may experience performance concerns, especially in sophisticated visual transformations and interactions. Yet this performance gap is insignificant for a lot of applications.
Community and Ecosystem
Because it was founded earlier and is based on JavaScript, React Native enjoys the advantages of a better-developed ecosystem and larger community. React Native is more widely supported by third-party libraries, tools, and frameworks, which can speed up development and make common problems easier to resolve.
Resources, libraries, and tools are becoming more widely available, and Flutter’s community is expanding quickly. Regarding the sheer amount and variety of community-contributed resources, it still trails React Native by a small margin.
Flutter Versus React Native: Which Is The Better Option?
In mobile app development, choosing between Flutter and React Native often involves several factors. These include project requirements, team expertise, and strategic objectives. The decision hinges on project needs, team skills, and app goals. Flutter and React Native offer different strengths and weaknesses. Here’s a closer look at the various instances in which each framework might be the best option:
When to Choose Flutter:
If your project requires a uniform user interface across platforms and good performance, Flutter might be a better option. With Flutter’s widget library, you can achieve a high level of customization without having to compromise on native speed, making it especially suitable for intricate animations and user interfaces that must appear the same on both iOS and Android.
Moreover, Flutter might be a useful tool if your development team knows how to use Dart or is willing to learn it. It’s also an excellent choice because of its single codebase, which greatly streamlines the development process if the program needs to be produced rapidly and delivered across numerous platforms.
When to Choose React Native:
If anyone on your team is familiar with JavaScript, React Native can be a great fit. This can speed up development cycles and drastically lower the learning curve. Applications that require a robust interaction with an already-existing online project or those that intend to share code between their web and mobile platforms are ideally suited for this framework.
With its large developer community and abundant ecosystem of libraries and tools, React Native can expedite development and provide answers to frequent issues. It is also advantageous if your application will rely a lot on native modules and third-party plugins.
Consider Your Specific Needs:
Development Speed: Flutter’s hot reload and user-friendly widgets can be helpful if you need to create quickly without compromising performance and time-to-market is of the essence. Hot reloading is another feature of React Native, but if your team is already familiar with JavaScript, the interaction with pre-existing code and frameworks can expedite development.
Performance: Because Flutter doesn’t rely on a bridge to communicate with the device’s native components, it typically offers a smoother and more consistent experience across platforms for apps where performance is important, particularly in terms of animation and UI smoothness.
Community and Support: Facebook’s support and the support of a sizable community lend React Native a wealth of libraries, tools, and frameworks that help expedite development. Although the Flutter community is expanding quickly, React Native continues to have a more developed ecosystem.
Prospects for the Future: Both frameworks are continuously being developed and maintained. Nevertheless, Flutter is becoming more and more well-liked due to its versatility and simplicity in creating visually beautiful apps. Facebook is showing that it is committed to React Native’s long-term viability as it develops projects like the React Native New Architecture.
The choice between Flutter and React Native should ultimately be based on the project’s strategic fit, not on how popular the technology is thought to be. To make an informed decision, consider the app’s user experience, developer experience, project timetable, and technological requirements. Although both frameworks provide solid solutions, the distinctions between them will affect the effectiveness, performance, and convenience of development for your particular app requirements.

Flutter’s popularity is steadily growing: as per Google, there are more than 100,000 applications created in Flutter. It's not hard to see why. Flutter code is not difficult to send and the pack incorporates every one of the instruments important to foster a decent application: a delivering motor, an assortment of pre-constructed and simple to-utilize gadgets, testing and reconciliation APIs, as well as command-line tools.
For what reason would it be advisable for you to utilize Flutter to develop your application
Chances are you’re already using apps that were developed with Flutter. Alibaba and Google Promotions are only two models - you can track down a greater rundown here.
With more than 100,000 Shudder applications currently accessible, there's no question that it is a famous decision among designers - however is it the best tool compartment for you
It might be if you’re working on an MVP: Flutter allows you to develop code for both Android and iOS apps quickly, without the additional cost of building separate codebases. So if you’re a start-up, prone to experimenting and without significant resources to pour into cross platform mobile app development, Flutter is something you should consider.
It's likewise an intriguing answer for endeavors, particularly those holding back nothing marked insight. Flutter lets you develop the product on a single framework and deliver a native experience for users of both operating systems.

What are the benefits of Flutter
Flutter has some unique features compared both to native development solutions and other cross-platform technologies. It is because of this that developers, tech leads, and product owners find it so appealing. The major advantages of Flutter are as follows:
Efficient development process
As a cross-platform technology, Flutter enables developing an app for both operating systems using the same codebase. Yet, that is not by any means the only justification for why utilizing Flutter makes the improvement cycle quicker and more effective. It also includes hot restart and a well-regarded “hot reload” function, which allows you to see updates in real time without restarting the app.
This significantly speeds up the development process. React Native and Xamarin have similar functions, but they are slower. Flutter lets you save time and resources with these features.
Widgets and compatibility
Widgets are the building blocks on which the entire application is based. In Flutter, widgets can be used to work on both instant and adjustable ones. The final product is likely to have fewer compatibility issues across platforms and OS versions due to the fact that widgets are an integral part of the app rather than a particular platform.
High performance
Flutter applications perform at a level similar with local native applications and are prevailing upon other cross-stage innovations. This is primarily due to the fact that Flutter is the only mobile SDK that does not communicate with the platform through a bridge (JavaScript or webview). As a result, the app starts up faster, has beautiful, quick animations, and has fewer performance issues.
Going beyond mobile
It’s possible to develop Flutter products that work on the web, desktop, and even TV, which many developers are already doing. These features are still in different stages of advancement, but Google definitely has the capacity to create a stable release. Flutter will likely continue to be developed in this direction given the company's importance to IoT.
Internationalization and accessibility
Internationalization, or creating different versions of your app for different languages and regions, typically occurs after the app itself is created and can result in multiple discrepancies. Flutter gives instruments that make this interaction a breeze and integrate it straightforwardly into improvement. Flutter additionally upholds openness, empowering huge textual styles, screen perusers, and improved contrast, all of this mechanized from inside the stage.

The "wonderful duck" priced at 9 yuan won't fly for long.
Tumblr media
Recently, an AI application called Miaoya Camera has become popular due to its unique gameplay. Photos generated by it can be seen on social media, and have aroused intense discussions among users. So can Miaoya Camera maintain its popularity and continue to develop? Let’s take a look at how the author analyzes it.
Even if you can't fly, at least you have flown.
If your circle of friends is flooded with various photos of "friends", don't panic. For only 9 yuan, 9 yuan, the price of a cup of Luckin coffee, you can have a complete set.
If you prefer to drink a glass of Luckin, or you really can’t find 20 personal selfies as material, don’t panic, because this small program that “generates professional-quality blockbusters online” shouldn’t be popular for long.
"Miaoya Camera" suddenly became popular, and many people used it to create various personal portraits - business style, ancient costume style, Japanese campus style. Because there were so many people experiencing it, “the server was overcrowded.”
This application is not complicated to operate. Upload about 20 personal selfies, choose a template to determine the style, and then wait for AI to generate it. I won’t go into details about the specific film production effects here. If you search for “Miaoya” in your circle of friends, there should be case studies.
What deserves more attention is that this is an AI application. To be precise, this is the first domestic consumer-oriented, paid, screen-swiping AI application.
This is amazing. Because since AI big models became popular at the beginning of this year, almost all large Internet companies are working on AI and throwing money into it. However, there has never been a product that ordinary people can easily get started with and use on a large scale - Baidu's Wen Xin Yi Yan and Alibaba's Tong Yi Qian Wen. These chat robots are not open to the public; Huawei's Pangu model, Tencent's The Hunyuan model is for B-side enterprises and has nothing to do with ordinary people.
But Miaoya is changing this situation, and it comes with a fee.
9 yuan may not seem like much, but almost all similar photo apps that appeared in the past were free at the beginning - Face Meng, ZAO, etc. were all very popular, and no one charged money right away.
While Miaoya is generating photos for users, it is also slapping investors in the face: “Who said big AI models don’t make money?”
This makes the wonderful duck a good research sample. Although a flash in the pan is almost inevitable, it still brings inspiration to AI entrepreneurs.
1. AI photo-taking starts with "alchemy"
Before discussing Miaoya, we first zoomed in on "Little Book", where a bunch of people were showing "alchemy".
The so-called "refining elixir" does not mean refining the elixir of life, but training an AI model. The process of "alchemy" relies heavily on the graphics card. The computer is running at full speed and may take dozens of hours at a time, hence the name "alchemy".
What about making alchemy? ——Use AI to generate high-quality portraits.
After AI painting became popular, the foreign open source Stable Diffusion model (hereinafter referred to as "SD") and Midjourney, which ordinary people can use, began to be used by more people. These two software are extremely powerful and produce stunning photo effects. In particular, the SD model is now the underlying technical support for many Vincentian graph applications.
Some "crab-loving" people grabbed early bird tickets and used SD and Midjourney to first generate cartoon-style avatars for themselves, then try to generate more realistic real-person avatars, and then unlock more complex scenes and generate some real-life avatars. A blockbuster film that cannot be shot anywhere else in the world.
Before Miaoya appeared, some people had already changed their WeChat avatars to AI portraits. There are also some people who have turned this skill into a business - teaching others AI portraits, or customizing AI portraits for others. The price of customized photos ranges from more than ten yuan to dozens of yuan.
A group of wild "alchemists" have embarked on a vigorous journey of training AI.
The "Little Fairy's Tool Man" (for the sake of memory, let's call him "Gong Juren") started thinking about and tinkering with some programs in May, and then made his own LoRA model. It took him more than half a month to make a LoRA model for his wife using hundreds of real photos. In early June, he used the model to generate the first AI photo.
LoRA model, you can understand it as a plug-in, which can customize and fine-tune the SD large model. It requires only a small amount of data to train the style and characteristics of the model.
For example, the beautiful girl AI pictures that were very popular in the first half of the year were created by someone using the avatars of Japanese and Korean beautiful girls to train the corresponding LoRA model. Other developers could quickly generate beautiful girl-style photos after taking them.
Using SD as the bottom layer and LoRA to make elixirs, this method is used by many developers. The technologies and codes involved are basically open source. The threshold for AI photography has been lowered in the first half of the year.
Gong Guren is not a computer major, nor is he engaged in AI-related work. Before doing AI portraits, his only foundation was a little Python, which he learned by himself. The starting point for him doing this is to take good-looking photos of his wife. He used to use a camera, but now he uses AI.
He told Dingjiao that he paid attention to Miaoya as soon as it went online on July 17. He believes that Miaoya's product implementation method is the same as what he does.
"It should be made by SD. Combined with LoRA character models, several character templates are fixed, allowing users to upload 20 photos to practice LoRA, and then use the generated LoRA to insert them into the templates made in the large model to change faces." Gong Ju Ren analysis.
Many investors who follow the AI track also believe that Miaoya’s technical principle is SD+LoRA.
Wang Sheng, managing partner of Inno Angel Fund, analyzed "Fixed Focus", "I guess Miaoya uses the SD open source model, and then adds a stylized training data set like LoRA. They train each person individually a small LoRA , and then fade various background content.”
Some investors told "Dingjiao" that Miaoya is "the bottom layer of LoRA alchemy + scene prompt words". Because 20 photos are the basic amount of data used to train LoRA.
Miaoya has made templates for portrait scenes, such as workplace, emotions, Jiangnan, spring, etc. Users click to select the scene, which is similar to inputting prompt words to AI to determine the photo style. After the user uploads 20 photos, the system begins to train the personal LoRA, which is what Miaoya calls a digital clone.
Based on the opinions of many investors and practitioners, Miaoya’s AI portrait is not difficult to implement and the technical threshold is not high.
2. Is the price of a cup of Luckin worth it?
Although there is no technical threshold, there is still a threshold for using Miaoya.
In fact, Miaoya’s user experience is not very good.
First of all, they have to provide more than 20 selfies, which dissuades a large group of straight men; secondly, you have to queue up to generate photos, and you have to wait for more than ten hours when there are many people; in addition, it charges 9 yuan and 9 yuan; you have to download For high-definition and uncensored photos, you have to recharge to buy diamonds; if you are not satisfied with the generated photos, we will not refund you.
As a C-end product, it almost sets up obstacles in every aspect that users are sensitive to.
Why does Miaoya dominate the screen? Just because it's a large model?
"They went in the right direction and captured the strongest point of user demand. The product actually has a threshold. This is a matter of product and operations." Wang Sheng said.
From the product perspective, in the direction of personal avatars, we have seen too many similar products in history. Ten years ago, Mian Meng focused on generating personal cartoon images. Later, the WeChat Christmas avatar became popular in WeChat Moments, and the face-swapping app ZAO incubated by Momo all captured the needs of users.
For users, whether the pictures are fresh and fun, or whether they use pictures to socialize and satisfy certain psychological needs, the underlying logic is similar.
When it comes to AI photography, the demand has already existed.
In December last year, Lensa, an overseas AI photo-taking app, became popular. Its gameplay is to allow users to upload about 20 personal photos, and AI will generate different styles of avatars or portraits for a fee. The painting model it uses is SD and the open source dataset LAION-5B. This is strictly speaking the earliest AI photo product to hit the screen.
However, domestic AI photography was mainly popular among the small circles of AI developers and photography enthusiasts before. Ordinary people could not distinguish the concepts of SD and LoRA, let alone get started. Now, through a product, Miaoya has lowered the threshold for ordinary people to use AI photography to zero. This is the prerequisite for Miaoya to become popular.
Miaoya's development team relied on Alibaba Entertainment to promote this product. On some grass-growing platforms, you can see bloggers’ promotional blog posts. "The execution power of large manufacturers is still very strong." Gong Guren commented.
Price is a controversial point.
The common way similar products have been played over the past ten years is to attract users for free first, without considering profits in the short term. As long as the user base increases, there is no need to worry about making money. In other words, swiping the screen is more important than charging.
Miaoya charges fees when it launches, and will add items later, which will shut out a large number of early adopters.
Some people may say that compared with offline studios such as Tianzhenlan and Haima that charge hundreds of yuan, 9 yuan is too cheap. Yes, it is indeed cheaper, but not everyone goes there just to take ID photos. “I’m just here to have fun, and I still have to charge money?”
It’s not difficult to understand the reason behind Miaoya’s collection of money. It is a recognized fact that large AI models burn money, and the inability to keep up with computing power is a pain for almost all AI companies today.
Gong Juren told "Dingjiao" that SD is an open source technology and the technical barriers are not high. What can be done is to make some optimizations on the algorithm and model.
In addition, the so-called digital avatar is to generate the user character LoRA. This model training takes time. If a large number of users pour in at the same time, the computing power will inevitably be tight, so a large number of users will queue up and wait. And once you start training the model, computing power will be consumed. This is a real cost. Miaoya should have calculated the cost, so you must charge once you use it.
In addition, the pictures generated by Miaoya generally have low pixels. If you need a large high-definition picture, you will need to consume further computing power to enlarge the image, so it costs money to export high-definition pictures.
However, this allowed Miaoya to have monetization capabilities from the beginning, becoming the first C-side monetization application among China’s large models.
Putting aside this meaningless name, the question now facing Miaoya is: How can it remain popular when the technical barriers are not high, the product experience is average, and charges limit dissemination?
3. Is Miaoya really popular?
Before discussing the prospects of Miaoya, let’s answer a question first: Is Miaoya really popular?
In comparison, Face Meng can be called very popular. It once had more than 20 million APP downloads within a week. ZAO also hit the screen. On the second day after it was launched, it rushed to the second place in the entertainment free list of the App Store and remained at the top until it was removed. Lensa dominates the App Store download lists in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries, with the highest single-day download volume exceeding 15 million.
How are Miaoya's results?
Miaoya does not have an APP, it is now a mini program. There is a platform in China that specializes in counting the popularity of small programs called Aladdin Index. We did not see Miaoya Camera in Aladdin’s major lists.
The WeChat index shows that the index of Miaoya Camera has been very low for four days after it went online on July 17. It started to rise on the fifth day and reached a peak on July 25. However, starting from July 26, the index turned downward. A sharp decline. Its heat only lasted about a week.
Baidu Index shows that the popularity of Miaoya Camera began to rise on July 23, reaching a peak on July 24, and then began to slowly decline, with the highest peak being less than 8,000. From the perspective of urban distribution, the people paying attention are mainly concentrated in first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
We can initially draw a conclusion: Miaoya is not considered out of the circle.
"Screening is in the media and related industries, as well as investment and financing." Liu Di, managing director of Shengjing Jiacheng, told "Dingjiao".
Above the threshold of 9 yuan and 9 yuan, the first one didn't hit it. It was very difficult for Miaoya to hit the screen again in the later period.
Gong Juren believes that when drawing full-body photos of people, existing AI models have insufficient pixels allocated to the face, hands and feet, so it is difficult to generate accurate full-body photos at once, and basically require facial restoration plug-ins such as After Detailer. To repair the face or artificially repair the fingers. Therefore, most of Miaoya’s photos are headshots and half-length photos, which focus on highlighting the characters and blurring the background. “This can also easily form a stereotype and lead to aesthetic fatigue. People will get tired of seeing it and it will be boring.”
Miaoya’s “predecessor” Lensa has already given the answer.
According to statistics from data analysis company Sensor Tower, Lensa's downloads began to increase in mid-November last year, reached a peak in mid-December, and fell back to low levels in mid-January this year. The popularity of the entire life cycle lasted only two months. Other head AI+ image applications follow almost the same trajectory.
In comparison, Miaoya is not as popular as Lensa.
Compared with discussions at the functional level, the most discussed aspects of Miaoya in the past few days are two issues that are not very beneficial to the company - data privacy and refund issues.
In Miaoya’s original user service agreement, there was an “overlord clause”. Translated, the personal selfies submitted by users to Miaoya can be used by the Miaoya team without restrictions, and the scope of use even includes virtual spaces such as the Metaverse.
20 personal selfies can completely build a face portrait model. With this model, the platform can generate selfie photos of users in any scene.
Even if the platform does not do evil, it is difficult to avoid being used by people with ulterior motives. "How can Miaoya ensure that there are no private goods in the 20 photos? Now someone has included photos of celebrities in 20 photos in order to make the photos behind them look better. " Liu Di said.
This has caused some users to express concern and ask to cancel their accounts. Now, Miaoya has deleted this clause.
There is also the issue of refunds. According to Miaoya's rules, after the user pays to generate photos, the service is deemed to be completed. Even if the user is not satisfied, there will be no refund.
This rule is not excessive. After all, if you go to a physical store to take pictures, there are very few promises of refunds if you are not satisfied. The difference is that Miaoya's service is template-based. Sometimes the photos generated by AI just don't achieve the desired effect, but you can't negotiate and fine-tune it like you can with a human. It's a bit like a one-shot deal.
Gong Juren analyzed the "fixed focus" and found that there is a problem with the LoRA model. 20 photos are not enough to produce a photo that is the same as my own. Some people will look like some people and some will not.
In response to the issue of refunds, Miaoya also issued a special response. This shows that there are many users who have requests for refunds.
These controversies, while increasing the popularity of Miaoya, are also limiting its popularity.
4. Miaoya’s inspiration for AI entrepreneurship
In any case, Miaoya has become popular in some people’s circle of friends. Today, when the "Battle of 100 Models" is in full swing, there is a product that has hit the screen, which is an encouragement to AI entrepreneurs.
In the wave of mobile Internet entrepreneurship, camera applications were the first to hit the market. Now that we are entering the AI entrepreneurship wave, camera products are also the first to take the lead. The similarity of this path excites some entrepreneurs.
However, investors remain cautiously optimistic.

As for Pinduoduo, although it also launched CPS business He Tuber earlier. However, due to the underlying logic of the platform’s low prices, there is not enough room for premiums for CPS promoters to make profits. Therefore, compared with the growth rate of the total transaction volume of its platform, the CPS section is still far behind the Taobao Alliance.
In this industry, there are also some training service providers and tool service providers such as Taoke, which are continuing to evolve.
After 2017, the large-scale promotion of the CPS industry in Tencent’s ecosystem soon led to frequent attacks by Tencent.
At this time, Tencent has not yet proposed a 2B industrial Internet strategy, so it is not aware of the rationality of private sector retail and has not assumed the main responsibility for its private sector retail infrastructure. On the contrary, it only views these "saboteurs" from a 2C perspective.
After being frequently rectified, a large number of CPS promoters began to make Taoke-like apps out of security considerations and user retention needs. The core idea is to use a multi-level interest bundling model to achieve user fission development and customer acquisition, and to carry out e-commerce sales and share commissions. Some channels that have done micro-business direct sales have begun to join this wave.
Looking back at the background of the rise of social e-commerce, it is also closely related to the e-commerce market environment at that time. The CPS platform, which has worked hard for the platform for many years, feels deeply insecure about the platform's ever-changing policies. It is attacked from both sides by Alibaba and Tencent. Its life is always at the mercy of the platform's policies, and from time to time it is "swept out of the world" by giants.
Therefore, CPS players who received the first wave of dividends began to launch their own e-commerce APPs in order to capture users, traffic and supply chains in their own hands. The idea is that even if they cannot do Taobao and JD.com, they will become a self-closed loop small ecosystem. It's also safer.
In a sense, if social e-commerce follows its original intention, scientifically designs its business model, and does not adopt a fission method that is eager for quick success, there may be a large number of vertical e-commerce.
It is a pity that history has no ifs. Coupled with the consumption upgrade and capital market speculation at that time, social e-commerce quickly became popular and quickly became dizzy.
Ironically, the capital market’s hype on social e-commerce is based on Pinduoduo. However, players generally do not learn Pinduoduo or understand the essence of Pinduoduo, but directly copy the direct sales model. This is one of the reasons why Huang Zheng disdainfully defined Pinduoduo as a social e-commerce company.
The social e-commerce model, which uses multi-level fission as the basic means of traffic, has rapidly emerged with a large number of players. This is true for online Global Catcher, Yunji, Beidian, Darling's Home, Peanut Diary, Miyuan, Fenxiang Life, Haosheng, Meiguang, Taojiji, and Future Market. The offline Xingsheng Youxuan, etc. are also similar. In addition, there are a large number of micro-business team leaders who, although they do not have products, have actually established their own private e-commerce platforms based on this model, such as Chenyi Story.
At that time, some powerful private domain team leaders could quickly fission their team members to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands through multi-level mechanisms. The high commission incentives also stimulated more participants to join the game.
Even Alibaba and JD.com, which have always been cautious, couldn't help but join in and build Taoxiaopu and Fenxiang. However, out of caution, one adopted an agency operation method and the other adopted an investment method to isolate their own risks. Of course the end result is the same. With the tightening of policies and heavy regulatory strikes, social e-commerce has failed one after another.
On the positive side, social e-commerce has further promoted the development of private retail compared to the early Taoke. Specifically, it is reflected in the following aspects.
At the user level, because social e-commerce mostly adopts a membership model and emphasizes long-term relationships, it achieves refined user operations through hierarchical management, which is precisely a necessary step for private sector retail to build long-term repurchase relationships. Compared with the early days of Taoke, which violently solicited groups and violently issued orders, this is a positive step forward. But looking back at history, we have to think deeply about whether to use manual or technical means to solve the problem in the future, or a combination of both.
Secondly, social e-commerce has made meaningful attempts in developing private domain traffic. In the early days of Taobao, there was no substantial innovation in the fission and development of private domain traffic, so they were regularly strangled by the platform. Although this traffic pattern innovation was unsuccessful, lessons can be learned for the future. In addition, compared to the weak connections and enabling relationships between Taobao customers, social e-commerce generally attaches great importance to improving the ability of subordinate relationships and building traffic. This is essentially the same as today's anchor capacity incubation by MCN organizations. , which provides incremental value from the traffic level.
The refined division of labor in the supply chain, expansion, training, operations, tools and other private sector cooperation chains also provides ideas for the productization of the private sector retail industry chain in the future. The finer the division of labor, the lower the industry threshold and the more participants.
Finally, social e-commerce has truly broken through Taoke’s role as a single channel.

The Leading Frameworks for Hybrid App Development in 2023
Tumblr media
Quick Summary:  Hybrid applications are a great way to get an app built and up and running quickly. They are the perfect option for startups and companies who want a presence in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Hybrid applications use web technologies for most of their code — so it’s familiar and easy to get started with, but it still has native user interface components, which provide a better user experience.
Tumblr media
The best 8 hybrid app frameworks for your app development are:
Ionic: Ionic is a powerful hybrid app development framework. It is one of the few frameworks to provide HTML, CSS, and JS for front-end and back-end. It can be used for developing mobile apps as well as websites. Ionic provides an ecosystem of products and services that assist developers in the long run. Ionic has huge community support as it has emerged from the strong base of AngularJS (the 2nd most popular framework). The documentation provided by Ionic together with its official blog ensures no developer faces any confusion while learning or working with this platform.
React Native: React Native has become very popular among mobile app developers in the last couple of years. It is a cross-platform framework that can be used to develop hybrid mobile apps. With React Native, web app developers can convert existing web apps to mobile apps without having to leave behind their existing skills and knowledge. This makes React Native a perfect alternative for Ionic Framework according to many experts.
Flutter: Flutter – is an open-source, cross-platform mobile app development framework written in Dart. Flutter enables developers to create apps with high-productive value. It has a single codebase for Android and iOS which means less time is wasted creating different code for similar apps. It allows you to create highly creative UIs with flexible designs. It makes room to create and try out interactions that lead to the creation of brilliant MVPs (prototypes). That’s why big brands want Flutter to develop their apps, such as Alibaba, Google, Tencent, Ikea, HP, Expedia, Alibaba, etc.
PhoneGap: PhoneGap is a new and popular framework for creating hybrid applications. This means that iOS and Android apps can be built using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. This reduces the time required to create an application by providing developers with a single codebase that can be deployed across multiple platforms. It is also easy for developers to use Cordova APIs as they are based on JavaScript.
Xamarin: Xamarin has its own separate IDE, which is easy to use. The framework allows the developer to use Android libraries. Also, it includes iOS libraries and SDKs in a manner that you will not find any difference between a native application and the ones that are developed using Xamalin. And it makes no difference to the end user of your application if they’ve downloaded the app via an Android market or Apple store. No extra charges for supporting versions other than Windows is a great advantage point for this framework as compared to its other competitors.
NativeScript: NativeScript is an open-source framework with fully integrated development of mobile applications. It enables the app developer to use JavaScript to build the app for different platforms like iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. This app developer also has access to the powerful features of native CSS, Java, and other coding languages to make the app very responsive.
Kendo UI: Kendo UI is a JavaScript UI framework developed by Telerik. The framework is famous for its elegance in functioning, wide range of features, and support for different frameworks (React, Angular, Vue, jQuery). Kendo UI is used to build mobile apps with HTML5 and works efficiently across all major smartphone platforms. Its advanced design concepts and its sheer simplicity have made it one of the most popular frameworks among app developers.
Framework7: Framework7 is a fast and powerful framework for developing hybrid applications. It’s a top hybrid app development framework for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Web. This is a design-first framework for building mobile apps. Framework7 comes packed with ready-made designs and components that you can fully customize to build your own app.
Conclusion
Frameworks are software development tools that allow for the creation of applications using standardized design patterns, pre-written code, and established best practices. Frameworks help you get your project off the ground by providing pre-written code. They can save time by providing code libraries to handle specific tasks such as user interface (UI) management or database integration. There is no right or wrong framework since each one has its own pros and cons. The framework you choose will depend on your project’s objectives, such as the functionality required and the timeline in which it needs to be completed. Hybrid app developers are the best when it comes to delivering high-end apps across platforms. Our offshore team of developers builds highly interactive and intuitive hybrid apps for clients across the globe. Be it our native experience or UI expertise, Brain Inventory has what it takes to deliver Perfect Apps for Client Requirements.

What Are Classified Submission Sites and Their Significance?
Classified submission is the practice of publishing your advertising campaign on classified submission sites, offering an effective means to enhance the visibility of your products or services across various search engines.
Classified submission sites serve as platforms where you can showcase your products or services through advertisements. Historically, classified submissions were prevalent in newspapers, pamphlets, magazines, and similar print media. However, the digital era has ushered in a transformative shift towards online marketing. With technology at the forefront of the digital landscape, the demand for classified submission sites has surged significantly in recent years.
Moreover, these online platforms foster robust business interactions by creating valuable opportunities for engagement between buyers and sellers. Sellers utilize classified submission sites to promote their offerings, while prospective buyers frequent these platforms in search of specific products or services. This dynamic interaction not only facilitates transactions but also serves as a powerful channel for business growth, enabling effective communication through methods such as email in-app messages or direct phone calls.
Exploring the Diverse World of Classified Sites

Incorporate High-Quality Visuals: If applicable, include high-quality images that showcase your product or service. Clear visuals significantly enhance the appeal of your ad.
Include a Strong Call to Action (CTA): Incorporate a clear and compelling call to action (CTA) that guides readers on the next steps, whether it's visiting your website, making a call, or sending an email.
Utilize Geographic Targeting: For location-specific offerings, use geographic targeting to ensure your ad reaches the right audience, particularly beneficial for local businesses.

Europe limits the dominance of six tech giants
Tumblr media
Google, Amazon, Meta, Tiktok, Apple and Microsoft: these are the six companies that Europe designates as 'gatekeeper' and that must adhere to new, stricter competition rules.
The European Commission on Wednesday 6-09-2023 designated six companies as 'gatekeepers'[1]. That list contains no surprises: it concerns Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Meta (Facebook, Instagram), Bytedance (Tiktok), Apple and Microsoft. Those companies have six months, until March 6, 2024, to comply with the rules of the Digital Markets Act, or DMA[2] in short. This means, among other things, that they are no longer allowed to use their dominant position in a certain domain (for example search engines or operating systems) to favour their own products over those of competitors.
This should lead to more competition on the European digital market and, the founders of the DMA hope, to more choice and in some cases lower prices for European consumers. “DMA means more choice for consumers, fewer obstacles for smaller competitors, opening the gates of the internet,” European Commissioner Thierry Breton posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday.
DMA and DSA
Between now and early next year, the key provisions of two major pieces of European legislation will come into force, together described as a new 'constitution for the internet'. The Digital Services Act[3] (DSA) is about the security and moderation of social networks and online stores, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) is about allowing competition.
In April this year, the European Commission also drew up a list of Very Large Online Platforms or VLOPs[4], the companies to which the strictest provisions of the DSA apply. The lists of the VLOPs (DSA) and the gatekeepers (DMA) overlap. The conditions for being on those lists are also similar: in both cases it concerns services with at least 45 million users in Europe, but the DMA also takes turnover into account.
A number of VLOPs have not been designated as gatekeepers: Twitter, Alibaba, Booking.com, Pinterest, Wikipedia and Zalando.
No Europeans
Also striking: the Korean electronics giant Samsung, previously mentioned as a potential gatekeeper, is ultimately not on the list. This means that it concerns five American companies and one Chinese (Bytedance, the company behind Tiktok, ed.). And, significantly: not a single European company, which exposes Europe to criticism that the DMA has protectionist aims with strict rules that only hinder large foreign players.
There was not much doubt about the names of the six gatekeepers, but it remained to be seen which of their products or services (the so-called core platform services) that designation would apply to. There are a few surprises there.
Tumblr media
Alphabet (Google) is considered the gatekeeper for seven different services: Google Search, the Google advertising platform, the Android operating system, YouTube, Google Maps, the Google Play app store and the shopping site Google Shopping. Gmail ultimately did not make that list. Meta is on the list with five services.
Procedures are still ongoing for a number of services to determine whether they will fall under the DMA rules, because the companies are contesting the designation. This includes Microsoft's Bing search engine and Apple's iMessage messaging service.
Messaging
One of the most striking – and most controversial – provisions in the DMA is that providers of messaging apps (Whatsapp and Messenger, because iMessage is not on the list for the time being) must allow interoperability. In concrete terms: if the provider of a messaging app such as Signal or Telegram requests this, Meta will be obliged to allow messages to be sent from Signal or Telegram to users of WhatsApp and Messenger, and vice versa.
Initially, that interoperability will be limited: you will be able to forward text messages to an individual person in another chat app. Video calls and group chats will only follow a few years later. The criticism of this obligation is that it reduces the security of messages: apps such as WhatsApp now encrypt all messages in a secure manner (end to end, in the jargon), which becomes more difficult if other apps can connect.
Another visible change would come for iPhone users: Apple should allow users to replace any of its own apps with competing apps, and they should also be able to get those apps from outside Apple's own App Store. Apple said on Wednesday that the company is "concerned" about how the DMA could threaten the security and privacy of European consumers. Apple says it is committed to mitigating those risks.

[1] Some large online platforms act as "gatekeepers" in digital markets. The Digital Markets Act aims to ensure that these platforms behave in a fair way online. Together with the Digital Services Act, the Digital Markets Act is one of the centrepieces of the European digital strategy. https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/digital-markets-act-ensuring-fair-and-open-digital-markets_en
[2] The Digital Markets Act (DMA) establishes a set of clearly defined objective criteria to identify “gatekeepers”. Gatekeepers are large digital platforms providing so called core platform services, such as for example online search engines, app stores, messenger services. Gatekeepers will have to comply with the do’s (i.e. obligations) and don’ts (i.e. prohibitions) listed in the DMA. https://digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu/index_en
[3] The rules specified in the DSA primarily concern online intermediaries and platforms. For example, online marketplaces, social networks, content-sharing platforms, app stores, and online travel and accommodation platforms. The Digital Markets Act includes rules that govern gatekeeper online platforms. Gatekeeper platforms are digital platforms with a systemic role in the internal market that function as bottlenecks between businesses and consumers for important digital services. Some of these services are also covered in the Digital Services Act, but for different reasons and with different types of provisions. https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/digital-services-act-package
[4] The strictest rules only apply to the biggest players, the Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) and Very Large Online Search Engines (VLOSEs), with more than 45 million users in the EU. There was never any doubt that Google, Meta and Amazon would be among them. Google even appears five times on the list: with Google Maps, Google Play, Google Search, Google Shopping and YouTube. But the Commission also mentioned: Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Microsoft (LinkedIn and Bing), Apple, Amazon, Pinterest, Snap, Tiktok, Twitter, Wikipedia, Zalando, Booking.com and AliExpress. More names will be added in the coming weeks. https://www.standaard.be/cnt/dmf20230425_96504173

Tech Shares Experience Decline as China Contemplates Restrictions on Child Smartphone Usage
Tumblr media
Chinese technology shares faced a downturn following a recommendation from the country's cyberspace regulator to limit smartphone usage for children under the age of 18. On Wednesday, companies like Alibaba and video-sharing platform Bilibili witnessed a decline in their share prices, which continued into early trading on Thursday. The proposed law aims to restrict children to a maximum of two hours of smartphone usage per day. This initiative comes four years after the implementation of gaming restrictions for children in the world's second-largest economy. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) is behind the proposed rules, which will also include a ban on children accessing the internet on mobile devices from 22:00 to 06:00 local time. According to the CAC's proposal, industry players, including mobile phone manufacturers, apps, and app stores, will be required to develop a "minor mode" function to set usage limits, varying by age. For instance, children between 16 and 18 years of age will be allowed two hours of screen time daily, while those under the age of eight will only be permitted eight minutes. The proposal is currently open for public feedback. Enforcement of these rules is likely to fall on technology giants, similar to how gaming restrictions were managed in the past, according to Ray Wang, founder and CEO of Silicon Valley-based consultancy, Constellation Research. Though there might be workarounds, such as children gaining access to their parents' devices, Wang suggests that gaming restrictions were generally well implemented. The impact of these developments is evident in the stock market, with Alibaba's shares closing more than 3% lower in Hong Kong on Wednesday, and Bilibili's share price tumbling nearly 7% in the territory. As of mid-day on Thursday, Alibaba's shares were trading around 2% lower, and Bilibili was down by 0.5%. On the other hand, technology giant Tencent's shares, which closed approximately 3% lower, experienced a slight recovery, being 0.1% higher in Hong Kong. China has previously taken measures to address video game addiction, which officials believe negatively impacts children's health. In November 2019, a curfew was imposed on online gaming for minors, prohibiting gamers under 18 from playing between 22:00 and 08:00. Additionally, they were restricted to 90 minutes of gaming on weekdays and three hours on weekends and holidays. More recently, children were banned from gaming for more than three hours per week. These regulatory moves have had an impact on Chinese technology companies, with increased regulations allowing the US to surpass China as the world's largest gaming market by revenue, according to research firm Newzoo. The Mechanism, Pricing, Merchandising & Management of Retail

Retail Mechanism Retailing is the process of selling goods to customers for their end use in small quantities. The retailer sells either in single units or in small quantities as per the need and requirement. How does retail work? Let us now know the many ways a buyer can purchase goods from the retailer. - Counter service This is buying off the counter. The buyer cannot access things on his own. He has to walk up to the counter and ask for his requirements. - Jewelry Store - Can you have self-service at a jewelry store? No. You need assistance from the salesperson to make a purchase - Chemist Shop - The chemist shop has counters. The salesperson is there to assist buyers. People walk up to the counter, present the prescription, and get served. - Delivery Service When goods are shipped to the doorstep of the buyer, it is known as a delivery service. The end-user need not visit the store. The products are directly delivered to his house. This is a very convenient method for people who are short on time. - Online Shopping The Internet has enabled shopping from the comfort of your couches. Websites like Amazon, Alibaba, and eBay, provide a wide range of buying options for the end-users. Debit and Credit cards are used for payments. The merchandise is then shipped to the specified address. Sometimes the delivery is free, sometimes the customer pays for it. - Order through telephone You can now call for meal orders for all kinds of food under the sun. This, you can do from the comfort of your home. The food outlets upload their menu or even use an app for the ease of the end-users. A kid can place an order and it is delivered within 30-45 minutes. Pizza, Burgers, Chinese, Lebanese. All sorts of cuisines are available. - Door-To-Door Sales:Door-to-door sale makes a salesperson go to each and every house to prompt the customers to buy the product. He gives a demonstration of his product. He then uses his powers of persuasion to convince the buyer to buy the merchandise. - Self-Service:In this mode, people can pick up merchandise themselves. - Second-Hand Retail:In second-hand retail shops, the retailer sells second-hand goods to the end-users. Such shops generally run for assistance where people donate their used goods to be sold again to the poor and needy. Retail Pricing A retailer doesn’t sell products in bulk; he sells them in small units to the end-users. Cost Plus Pricing Mechanism Every organization wants to earn profits and so does the retail industry. Cost plus pricing works on the following principle: - Cost Price of the product + Profit (Decided by the retailer) = Final price of the merchandise. - Cost-plus pricing strategy considers the profit of the retailer. - Cost plus pricing is an easy way to calculate the final price. - The increase in the retailer price is directly proportional to the increase in the cost price. - The customers do not have any input in cost-plus pricing. MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) – The retailer sells his merchandise at a price suggested by the manufacturer. - Condition 1 – The retailer sells the product at the same price as suggested by the manufacturer. - Condition 2 – The retailer sells at a price less than what was suggested by the manufacturer. - Condition 3 – Retailers initially quote an unreasonably high price and then reduce the price on the customer’s request.   Competitive Pricing The retailers must go above and beyond in the call for customer service to the buyer. - The price is similar to the competitor’s but this one comes with certain added benefits for the customers. - The retailers guarantee that the clients leave their store with a smile to have an edge over the competitors. Pricing Below Competition According to the pricing below competition policy: - The price of the merchandise is kept lesser than that of competitors. Prestige Pricing (Pricing above competition) According to the prestige pricing mechanism, the price is set slightly above the competitors. The retailer can charge a higher price than the competitors, but only for the following: - Exclusive brands at the store. - Brand image of the store - Pristine location of the store - Superlative customer service - Merchandise exclusive to this particular store - Latest trends Psychological Pricing - The price of a product that is willingly acceptable to the buyer is called the psychological price. - The consumer perceives these prices to be correct and good. - A price is set, by the retailer, that meets the expectations of the buyers. Multiple Pricing - More for the price of one. - The retailers gather a few products to be sold collectively, for a single fixed price. - 3 Shirts for $100/- or 3 Perfumes for $20/- and so on. Discount Pricing The retailer sells his goods at a discounted price during off seasons or to clear out his stock. A product kept in a nice box would definitely catch the attention of the customers. Impressive presentation The presentation of the goods at the retail store must lure the customers. The merchandiser, in harmony with the store manager, must make sure that the products are according to the season as well as the latest trends. The merchandiser must: - Source something which is exclusive and not available anywhere else. - Never compromise on the quality of the goods. Cooperating on quality costs later. - Source goods as per the season and climate. By mid of August and early September, the summer merchandise is generally closed. Outlets begin stocking merchandise for the winter season. Warm clothing, full sleeves attires, jackets, sweaters start replacing cut sleeves, capris, ankle-length dresses, shorts, and so on. Colorful clothes dominate the shelves as compared to the subtle colors in summer. Unique Pricing (Discounts) Striking prices, concessions, and discounts also bring clients to the store. Promotional schemes, gifts Coupons and striking gifts make shopping an enjoyable experience for customers. Merchandising Tips - The merchandiser must source products as per the latest trends and seasons. - Merchandise for children should be according to their age. Use cartoon characters to excite them. - The merchandiser preferably works on the “invariant right” principle. Most of us are right-handed. It is a common tendency that customers entering retail stores would first go towards the right side. The merchandiser should display the exclusive and expensive collections on the right side of the store to tempt the customers. - The setup of the store should be designed in such a manner, that once a customer enters a store, he has to walk through all departments. - The shelves should be full of the latest trends. The goods should be well organized on the racks. Size-wise and pattern-wise. - It is the responsibility of the merchandiser to create an attractive display to entice the customers into the store. Once the customer steps in, he would end up buying something. Cross Merchandising Cross merchandising is the display of conflicting and unrelated products together to earn extra revenues for the store. Products from different categories are kept together in one place for the customers to find a relation among them and pick up all. According to cross-merchandising: - Unconnected products are shown together. - The retailer makes profits by connecting products that are not associated in any sense and belong to different classes. - Cross Merchandising helps the clients to know about the many choices which would match their product. - Cross Merchandising makes shopping a pleasurable experience as it saves customers’ time. Examples of Cross Merchandising - Mobile covers and mobile phones. - Recharge coupons and new sim cards - Batteries with electronic appliances - Neckties or cuff links and men’s shirts - Fashion jewelry, rings, anklets, handbags, and female dresses - Shoelaces, shoe shiners, shoe stands with shoes - Audio CDs and CD Players Important Tips for Cross Merchandising - The opposite products should be level-headedly displayed for the clients to be able to tell them. - The merchandise should be skillfully arranged without giving a muddled look to the store. - The merchandise must match each good to create the desired impact. - The retailer must make sure the products have some rational linking with each other. - Use hooks, fasteners, mannequins, or suitable fixtures to logically display the dissimilar goods and prompt the buyer to pick all of them. Visual Merchandising Increasing the sale of products by aesthetically displaying them at the retail outlet is known as visual merchandising. This is done to influence the end user’s buying behavior. The store must offer a positive ambiance to the buyers to enjoy their shopping. How strategically the merchandise is placed in the store, determines the level of sales of the outlet. Lighting is perhaps the most important area in visual merchandising. Lighting intensifies the prominence of the goods kept in the store. The store should be sufficiently lit and well-ventilated. Avoid harsh lighting as it blinds the customers. The signage or fascia with the name of the store must be installed properly outside the store at a place easily on display to the clients even from a distance. The retailer should carefully choose the color of the paint for his store. The paint color will set the temperament of the customers. The wall colors must be well contrasted with the carpet, floor tiles, or the furniture at the store. Dark colors make the room look small and congested in comparison with light and subtle colors. The store should always smell good. Bad smell bothers the customers. They’ll leave the store as quickly as they came in. Air Fresheners or aromatic sticks should be used. The goods must be organized and kept properly. Put size labels on the shelves. It helps to locate the goods easily. The products should not fall off the racks. The mannequins should be tastefully placed. They must highlight some unique collections, the latest trends, and new arrivals. They should not be a hindrance to buyers. Do not keep them at the main door of the store. Don’t play loud music at the store. It impeded communication and there is then a gap between the retailer and the buyer. Choose the theme of the store according to the season. Red should be aplenty during Christmas or Valentine’s Day. It symbolizes love, fun, and frolic. A white theme would look out of place during Valentine’s Day. Don’t keep needless furniture as it gives a messy look to the store.
