The California heat was unforgiving, sending heavy rays of sun onto your back as you sat on the deck, looking out into the vast ocean that surrounded you. From your spot, you could make out the beginnings of the shoreline, the idea of having your feet back on solid ground giving you hope- but also sending a sharp pang of anxiety into your stomach. Though you knew the WLF and that girl were long gone, the fear they instilled in you remained. You found yourself rounding every corner expecting them to be there, expecting the freedom you all had created to be squished yet again. It made you ill, the thought of going back.
“You okay?” Lev asked, nudging your leg with his elbow lightly. He was still pulling apart the twine, fingers moving out of memory from all the times he'd done this exact thing back in Seattle. He’d been adamant about his fading belief in the prophet, though it was still a part of him he held dear to him- feeling as if it connected him more to Yara, even now.
You nodded, quickly, shaking the thoughts from your head as you glanced down at the pile of wood shavings that had begun to accumulate under your knife. You’d been whittling some twigs you’d found on your last excursion on land, making them more uniform for your craft project at hand. “Yeah, all good. Just thinking.” You hummed, shooting him a convincing smile. You tried to keep your worries to yourself, reading somewhere that sometimes babies can pick up on their parent's emotions. No, Lev was not a baby. No, you weren't his parent- but surely it worked the same way right?
He snorted, shaking his head as he focused back in on the twine, pulling the strings into smaller- more manipulable pieces.
“What?” You asked, turning to him, a faux serious expression resting on your face.
Lev shrugged, glancing over at you. “You’re just a bad liar. I know you’re scared, (y/n).” He said simply as if it was the easiest thing in the world. “It’s okay to be scared.”
“Who’s scared?” Abby popped up, pushing the door closed with her foot as her hands were full of plates containing the fish you all had managed to catch earlier- she’d taken it upon herself to cook considering you and Lev had managed to catch more fish than her.
You shook your head, scooting over to make more room for her, brushing the wood shavings off of the side of the boat before she noticed them. She was big on trying to keep the place clean, considering you had so many more weeks before you were even close to Santa barbara. “Nobody,” You began, making a point to stick your tongue out at Lev, who scrunched his nose in response. “That looks really good, Abs!”
Abby set the plates down in front of the three of you, silently praying the wind kept behaving- not wanting to have another incident. (That being when the wind picked up one night the three of you were having dinner and lev’s fish flew right off of his plate and back into the water. He almost cried.) “Okay, fine, keep your secrets.” She teased, her usually sandy blonde hair glowing a much lighter color from the constant abuse from the sun. It suited her, in your opinion.
You clicked your knife closed, tucking it into your pocket before picking your fork up- pulling apart the fish on your plate. It had taken some time, honestly a lot of time, before you’d gotten your appetite back. After weeks of living off of Seattle rain, nuts, and fear- you’d lost the ability to feel hungry, the idea of eating sending you right back into that survival headspace. You somehow had begun associating the most normal human need with the trauma you’d endured, the two going hand in hand when you thought about it more- which you tried not to do. “Any luck with that radio?” You posed the question, nodding back into the main cabin just down the stairs. When you’d gotten the boat from the aquarium, it looked like Owen had begun working on the radio, leading you to think maybe you all could figure out a way to finish his work. It would make contacting the fireflies much easier.
She shook her head, taking a sip from her water bottle. “No, I think it's too busted to work. The wiring is all fried, looks like it is from a power surge or something.” She explained, her soft gaze coming to land on you. Throughout this whole trip, she’d wanted to give up. It took everything in her to not turn back around and just give herself back to the only life she’d really gotten to know, the grief she battled was enough to eat her alive. The only way she’d made it this far was by leaning on you, opening herself up to your unwavering support, because no matter how strong she prided herself on being- it didn't keep the nightmares away as you could. She’d found solace in your arms.
“Well, I mean, that's okay. We’ll still find them.” You smiled up at her, finding yourself losing the air in your lungs as you finally got a second to take her in. Yes, you’d seen her before now- but it was different. In the slight shade from the sail, she seemed to be glowing. Her hair was sun-bleached, freckles dark on her cheeks, skin tinted slightly pink from the heat. It was a new Abby, one you’d gotten the pleasure of calling your own. She’d shed her old skin, coming back as a completely new person as she tried to heal through her trauma, aiming at creating a new life for you all. “How long do you think it’ll be before we get there?”
Lev interrupted before Abby had a second to respond, “No more firefly talk while we eat, gonna make me have an attack of panic.” He huffed, stuffing another forkful of fish in his mouth as he eyed the two of you.
“A panic attack, Lev.” You chuckled, giving him a soft nod to agree to his demands. He hated having to talk about the future, constantly wondering if you all would live to see that day. While you and Abby tried to avoid talking about the subject, there were times when it felt necessary. Now, it wasn’t- so you left it at that.
“That's what I said.”
Abby laughed, her eyes crinkling as she looked towards the boy affectionately, he’d been the beginning of all of this. A revolution of her life, sending her on the right track towards her future, which in every right was being here with you two. She really couldn’t see herself being anywhere else with anyone else. Every day she wished Yara could see him, how much he’d grown in such a short time, how strong he was. All traits he got from her. “How’s crafting going?” She hummed, nodding down to the shavings you’d missed.
Lev was noticeably piqued at the question, pushing his empty plate aside gently before moving to show her the pile of twine he’d collected from just stripping the fibers apart. “Look!” He spoke quickly, dipping into his pocket to collect the symbol he’d completed earlier. “It’s holding up really well, considering the twigs aren’t very bendy.”
She smiled, plucking the prophet’s symbol from his open palm gently. It always intrigued her, and she found herself almost opening up to the idea of letting Lev tell her of the prophets writing. Though, admittedly, she wasn’t the religious type. Her father always preferred to raise her on logic and science. “This looks really great, actually.” She praised, running her thumb over the smooth curve of the wood. She glanced over at you, seeing how your legs were covered in tiny shavings, before chuckling. “Can I help?”
He nodded, pulling another bunch of twine from his other pocket, and holding it out for her to take. It was like he could hold just about anything in his little cargo short pockets, once pulling a frog from them- much to Abby's dismay. Though, in his defense, he didn’t know she was scared of frogs. “(y/n)’s good at whittling, so you can help me.” He explained, taking the symbol and placing it back in his pocket.
You finished off your food in a hurry, the familiar resistance growing in your stomach, if you didn’t get it down now- you feared it would come back up later. You recovered quickly, making it seem like you just wanted to get back to whittling. “I think I’m average at whittling, plus, these sticks are tiny. Only so much damage you can do.” You joked, pulling your knife from your pocket as you got back to work on the stick you were working on. It was significantly larger than the others, seeing as you were aiming to make it bigger.
“Don’t undersell yourself,” Abby tutted, eyes narrowing as she gave you a once over. Her hand outstretched to grab your plate, stacking it with Levs before putting her own on top. It was a bad habit you had, making your skills seem less than they were, she’d noticed it back at the stadium but through the weeks of sailing, it had only gotten worse. She’d begun to think it stemmed from a fear of disappointing them, and not living up to the nonexistent standards they held. “It looks perfect, pretty.”
“Yuck.” Lev faux gagged, side-eying the two of you as he laughed lightly.
You reached over to playfully punch him on the shoulder, taking the attention off of your embarrassingly red cheeks. “Get over it!”
“You guys are so gross.”
“Lev, are you being homophobic?”
“Don’t say that to him, Abby!”
“Home-of-phobic?”

White paint may seem like the simplest choice, but there are just as many shades to choose from as with any bolder hue.

Signs That You Are In Need of Professional Roofing Services
On the average, a homeowner will spend an average of $3.50 to $6.00 per square foot of $350 to $600 per 100 sq.feet for a roof replacement. This cost varies, depending on the type of materials used as well as the additional features that a roofing system may require. With this much money involved in installation and repair, it is ideal to take the necessary precautions to prolong the lifespan of your roofs.
Tumblr media
Roofing Services Santa Barbara
However, roofs do not last forever. As they age, they are bound to be repaired and replaced. When they do, you need to be familiar with the warning signs that your roof is in need of some tender loving care. Seeking professional services before small repairs turn into major problems can help you cut back hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars in repair and replacement costs.
 Moisture in the Roof
Water is one of the major issues that can lead to bigger problems for your roofs. It may cause your trusses to rot or damage your plumbing. Water infiltrating your rooftop can also affect your HVAC systems as well as your electrical lines in your property.
Dealing with these issues urgently is a must. Mold problems left unattended can lead to bacterial growth and may cause health risks to the household. Prolong moisture in your roofs can also cause insect infestations. The cost associated in clearing out these potential issues is definitely hefty, compared to having your repairs professionally checked and repaired.
 Drooping or Sagging Roof Decks
It is the responsibility of the homeowner to physically check the condition of their rooftop. Going around your house to check for sagging and drooping. If you suspect that your roofs are drooping, seek professional inspection before things get out of your control.
Noticeable bubbling is also something to look into. This may be caused by moisture that has been building up under the roof shinglings. Have these bubbles fixed by acting quickly and bringing in a professional. If you are uncertain about the bubbles, droops or sags that you see, a professional can easily give you a reliable assessment. Visit www.nemaroofing.com
 Dislodged and Damaged Flashing
The flashing is what protects your roof from water and debris buildup. However, when your flashing is damaged or dislodged, it can compromise the integrity of your roof, causing premature damage and other potential issues. When a flushing is bent, damaged or dislodged, the flashing seal will also break. Water begins to penetrate the roof when the flashing is damaged.
Weather and ageing can cause damage to the flashing. Poor installation can also cause these areas to break and work improperly. If this area is damaged or was never installed properly, premature damage in the other areas of your room can occur. When they do, you need to have them inspected by professional roofing services.
 Low-Quality Job by Another Contractor
Unfortunately, homeowners can be lured and be victims of shady repairs and contractors. For incomplete or improper installation, getting help from verified and professional services is the best solution available for you. If you discover that the roofing services that you receive are below your expectations or building code standards, getting help is a must.
If you find yourself in a situation needed for repairs from damages and inconveniences caused by a former contractor, be keen on looking for an expert, with years of experience and credible background in roof repairs and services.
Rips and Tears Due to Old Age
Slate, copper and tile materials can last as long as 50 years. Wood shake lasts around 30 years while fiber cement roofing can last around 25 years. Metal, on the other hand, can last from 40 to 70 years. Meanwhile, traditional asphalt roofing can last around 12 to 20 years.
As your roof age, they will eventually require some repair and replacement. To get the best estimate for the job, have your roof inspected by a professional. Reliable roofing services from a licensed contractor can give you a fair estimate of the cost involved in repairing and replacing old roofs.
Before doing anything on your roofs, talking with a professional who can oversee the actual condition of your roof is a must. Seek help to get these areas inspected. Get the best roofing services for your roofing requirements to protect your investment and get the best services from your trusted roofing contractor.

Rebel Yell- 1
Summary: Let’s get something straight: he does not love you. He knows that for sure, because he doesn’t want to scream at you and he doesn’t want to get married, and that’s the only things he knows for sure about people who are in love. And he was doomed to kiss with his fists and scream and be angry and blame everyone but himself for the rest of his life. So, no. Billy did not love you. Billy Hargrove x Hopper!Reader
Word Count: 2079
AN: Hey all! Just a forward for this series, it does follow s2 kind of. Also, I have 8 parts currently written and it’s... it’s gonna be a long one, ya’ll.
Tumblr media
It’s snowing, inside the trailer. The fluttering, gentle flakes kissing the furniture and disappearing against fabric and wood. Above, the colorful strings of lights twinkle to the distorted tune of Santa Claus is Coming to Town. It’s quiet, dark, peaceful.
Why, then, are you so afraid?
The lights flicker, the electric buzz bleeding into something far more sinister. A hiss. A growl. The snowflakes aren’t snow at all, but ash. The smell of gasoline replaces any hint of gingerbread. The growling grows louder, the lights match the speed of your racing heart. The lights fall like a rainbow on your face, but everytime they flash off, a dark shadow lingers over you. It stretches up the wall and ceiling, until there’s nothing left but long, crooked limbs and a blossoming head, it’s mouth open and hungry.
You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
You jerk awake, snapping like a rubber band back into reality, where the only flickering light is the alarm clock by your bed. It takes a second for you to catch up, breathing the stale smell of the trailer- no gasoline or gingerbread or fear- and look at the clock. It’s 5:22, and the world is still asleep.
Shoving the covers off, you sit up, rubbing your palms in your eyes like you can blur away the nightmare. Stuffing your feet into your boots, the laces drag the ground as you shuffle quietly to the back door. The October air is welcoming on your skin, wiping away the sweat stuck to your forehead and shushing away your fears like a comforting kiss. A cigarette in hand, the smoke drifts towards the west, where your back deck overlooks the lake, and disappears into the night sky.
Always darkest, you think. Just before dawn.
It takes three cigarettes before the sun starts to rise. Birds begin to stretch their wings, chirping from the woods beyond the lake. Smothering the butts on the deck railing, you flick the last one over the side and slip back through the door. When it closes behind you, the sounds of morning are replaced by the sounds of sleep.
The snoring is muffled by the pillow over his head, held there by a limp arm. His legs stick out over the other end of the couch, all of it sinking under his weight. There’s a bottle, hanging limply in his other hand, two more on the table. Sighing, you reach toward him and tug gently on the pillow.
“Dad.” Your voice is a harsh whisper, no louder than his snores, and you clear your throat to swallow the remnants of sleep and smoke. “Dad, get up.”
He hugs the pillow tighter, a dragonesque snore pulling from his lips. You let go, frowning down at him, and grab the curtain on the window overhead. Pulling it open, the light spills over his sleeping form and the literred table.
“We’re both gonna be late,” louder this time, you grab up the empty bottles and clang them together. The snore turns into a groan turns into a sigh, and he throws the pillow onto the floor as you move toward the kitchen. “It’s Monday, Dad.”
“You’re insufferable,” he mumbled, the couch protesting loudly as he pushes himself up. “Who taught you to be so damn responsible?”
“Must’ve been Mom,” you shrug, turning the knobs on the stove as he lumbers toward the bathroom.
“Must’ve been.”
Seven thirty, the world is brighter and you’re both climbing into the car marked ‘Hawkins Police Dept.’ Warm air floods the vehicle as he pulls onto the road, driving straight toward the growing sun.
“You ready for that chemistry test?” One hand on the wheel, his eyes flickered over, trying to read your expression in the reflection of the window.
“Test was last week,” you said. Jim Hopper looks back at the dirty windshield, tapping his thumb on the wheel to the faint music coming from the dash.
“Really? How, uh, how’d it go?”
“Got a C.”
He doesn’t know if he should be disappointed or proud, but he nods anyway. “How ‘bout everything else? Grades look okay?”
“They’re fine,” you answer, tracing shapes on the car window. Even with the heat on, the windows fog over and it feels like winter. “Nancy wants to go to this Halloween party tomorrow.”
“Oh yeah? A party, huh?”
“Yeah,” you breathe on the glass, blurring out the frowning doodles. “We were thinking I’d spend the night with her after.”
Jim flicks the turn signal, pausing at a stop sign. “Just you and Nancy?”
“Yes, Dad. Just me and Nancy.”
“Where’s the party?”
“Tina’s.”
Jim frowns. Which one was Tina, again? Was she one of the ones he liked? “You’ll call when you make it to Nancy’s?”
“Yeah, okay. Does that mean I can go?” The car stops outside of Hawkins High School. Groups of students make their way toward the doors, books in hand and bags over their shoulders. Jim puts the car in park as you reach for the handle.
“Just dont forget to call.”
The door slams shut behind you, your eyes already looking for a familiar BMW as you cross the gravel lot. A flash of blue, a dash of pink, and you recognize Steve and Nancy standing out of the car. Nancy spots you first, raising her hand to get your attention as you skid down the hill toward them.
The purr of a hot engine and squealing tires makes you pause at the edge of the lot. A midnight blue Camaro separates you from Nancy and Steve, blaring a song you’d heard a million times on your own stereo. It parks and the doors swing open. A red headed girl hops out of the passenger’s seat, points a skateboard for the middle school, and is gone.
The driver moves slower, one boot out and then the other, and when he stands tall, he’s nothing you had seen at Hawkins before. You would have recognized the denim-on-denim, steel-horse cowboy if you had seen him before.
The stranger pauses to look around, surveying the area like a wolf searching for prey. He turns on the spot, just enough for you to get a good look at his face. His jaw is square, a barely-there stubble over his cheeks and above wine red lips. He’s soft, with rough edges and sharp blue eyes. And when he walks away, he swaggers like a rockstar on stage.
“Who is that?”
“I have no idea-“
The moment passes, and you skip across the lot toward Nancy and Steve.
“Sorry I’m late,” you sigh, shifting the weight of your backpack. “Overslept.”
The three of you start for the school, following the steady stream of students through the halls. You shoulder pressed tight to Nancy’s, slipping through a doorway where Tina was handing out bright orange fliers for her party.
“Y/N,” Nancy pauses where the hall splits in three directions, tugging your sleeve. “You’re coming tonight, right? We can’t cancel again.”
You nod, moving toward your locker. “Yeah, I’ll be there.”
Satisfied, Nancy allows Steve to drag her off, the two of them disappearing into the flood of students. Turning back around, you twist open the lock on your locker and start unloading your books on the shelf, shoving the backpack to the bottom, on top of a pile of forgotten homework and clothes. Glancing up, you catch sight of the photograph pinned to the inside of the door.
You’re smiling, in the photo. A Polaroid taken at a carnival, you’re holding an ice cream cone and making a peace sign. Nancy holds her own cone, that cotton candy smile plastered on her rosy cheeks. On the other side of her, Barbara Holland is laughing.
It’s overcast when the last bell rings and students begin pouring out onto the asphalt. Leaves crunch under your feet as you weave between huddles of teenagers and their cars, searching absently for a familiar BMW. The click of wheels on the pavement behind you caught your attention, and you turned to see the redhead standing on the board, heading toward you as you passed by Tommy H’s car. The tail lights of the car flashed, and before you could warn the preteen, the car backed up and knocked her flat on her back. The skateboard slid under the car and came out the other side, hitting you in the foot as Tommy slammed on his brakes.
“Watch it, little twerp!” Carol leaned out the passenger window, sneering down at where the girl sprawled on the pavement. She clamored to her feet as you grabbed the skateboard off the ground.
“Shove it up your ass, Carol!” You hip checked the back of Tommy’s car as you rounded it, jostling her, and ignored the middle finger she sent you as you helped the middle schooler to her feet. Tommy backed up as soon as you both were clear, wheels churning dust as they peeled out of the lot.
“You okay, red?” She nodded, face flushed as red as her hair as she took the board back from you. “Hey, you’re the new kid, right?”
She rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I guess. It’s, uh, I’m Max.”
“Sorry, Max. Small town, word gets around. You can call me Hopper. Everyone does.”
Max flashes a quick smile before turning the board over to inspect it. “Crap, one of my bearings broke.”
Following her line of sight, you peer at the cracked piece of metal attached to the wheel. “Shit, I’m sorry. I don’t think Melvald’s carries anything like that, but I bet you can get them to order one.”
“Melvald’s? Where’s that?”
“Downtown, right by Radio Shack. It’s near the Palace Arcade, too, if that’s your kind of thing.”
Max smiles, tucking the board under her arm. “Thanks,” she says. Her smile vanishes, her eyes trained somewhere over your shoulder. You turn, spotting the familiar blue eyes watching you from beside the Camaro. “I better go before I get left behind. Can’t skate home without a board.”
“Yeah,” you mumble, adjusting the backpack on your shoulder. “What’s he, like your brother or something?”
Max snorted. “Or something.”
Max waved a half-hearted goodbye and you watched after her a moment as she neared the car before you continued your search for Steve or his notoriously loud BMW.
“Who were you talking to?”
Max rolled her eyes, yanking the passenger door open. “Nobody.”
“Nobody?”
The doors slammed and the car came to life, music blaring from the radio as the car reversed and swung out of the lot. “Just some girl.”
Barbara’s parents welcome you, Nancy and Steve into their home, each week, with hopeful smiles. All of you, seated around the flowery table with your plates loaded with take-out chicken, chatting lightly about things that don’t matter. The table behind you is decorated with various mismatched frames, all of them photos of Barb, and you keep looking at them like her eyes, all pairs, some behind thick glasses, others young and carefree, all watching you. Like they know the secret that you, Nancy and Steve have been keeping the better part of a year.
Barbara Holland was dead. You knew this. Steve knew. Nancy knew. Others, too, but it was still somehow something that was guised under Missing. There was nothing ‘Missing.’ There were no footprints to follow. Barbara Holland was dead, but her parents still held the door open for the three of you, still held out hope that someday their daughter would come home.
“It means we’re going to find our Barb,” Mrs. Holland was saying.
You stuck your fork into the macaroni and cheese. Nancy and Steve exchanged looks.
“For the first time in a long time, we’re hopeful.”
Nancy slipped away from the table, disappearing into the bathroom. Steve cleared his throat, trying to retain a semblance of normalcy with the Hollands. You didn’t look up, staring hard at the barely-touched plate in front of you.
Hawkins had not been the same since last November. Things had changed, forever tainted by the things that had happened. Will Byers disappeared and seemingly came back from the dead. Barbara Holland was taken and did not come back. Monsters proved themselves to be very real, and not the kind you had seen under your bed and in your closet in your youth. In short, life in Hawkins, Indiana, had been completely turned upside down.

So I found this magazine article about Josh while he was still with Minnie Driver in 2000. You can learn more about his early life, worth reading it!
The Heir Up There: Josh Brolin
Text by John Griffiths | Photographs by Art Streiber Article and photos contributed by the wonderfully generous Dana
It was a full-throttle kind of day, and to the glee of Trevor, 11, and Eden, 6, Josh Brolin has just topped a steep hill with his dusty black Jeep. Now the three are standing among a group of moss-dripping oaks high above their 97-acre ranch near Paso Robles, Calif., taking in the panorama. “When you shout, it echoes for over a minute," says Trevor, just before filling the canyon with a bellow. Dad grins. "There's so much serenity here," says Brolin, "and not that new age kind of peace. It's real, down-home dirt serenity." even if you have to work to achieve it: To get to the spread and the three-bedroom, two-story log house that serves as its locus, visitors must navigate a rocky, twisted, mile-long road, cross a bridge and ford stream (Josh, not everyone has an SUV), all the while trying not to be distracted by grazing deer. Bobcats and foxes roam these parts, too, and there's probably not a talent agent within 200 miles. "This is my world," says Brolin. "I don't trust Hollywood, so I don't take it too seriously."
Presumably he doesn't mind that Hollywood won't be rebuffed. After acting in such indie films as Flirting with Disaster (as the straight-arrow, bisexual Fed) and gamely tackling such roles as a cockroach-battling hero in Mimic and a seductive villain in last year's Mod Squad, Brolin, 32, is pressing into mainstream with this summer's sci-fi flick Hollow Man, as the buddy of Invisibility-prone scientist Kevin Bacon. Josh's dad James, of course, is an entrenched TV star -- Marcus Welby, M.D.; Hotel and the current Pensacola -- while his stepmom of two years is la Streisand herself (Brolin fils calls her Barbra). And Josh's own love? Bright-faced actress Minnie Driver, whom he met at a barbecue in 998 (the pair also heat up the upcoming Mexican-desert drama Slow Burn). But Brolin's surroundings put all those tabloid teasers into perspective, according to actor Anthony Zerbe, a friend since the two gunslinged through the early nineties series The Young Riders. "There's this whole Hollywood aspect to Josh's life, but then he's got his ranch where he takes off his shirt and digs a well," says Zerbe. "The place is a bulwark against the intrusive parts of his profession."
Brolin's father and his late mother, Jane, a "female Grizzly Adams" who nursed ailing animals for the California Department of Fish and game, bought the land in 1975 and built their dream home. Josh grew up here with his brother, Jess, and was an A student at Santa Barbara High, some 90 miles away. "My dad dug the pond," says Brolin, skipping stones on the half-acre body of water. "I was lucky to be around people who appreciate this life." His mom, a "spitfire" who urged him to speak his mind, stayed after the couple split in 1985. Five years ago, she died in a car crash, and Josh, then stage acting and directing in Rochester, N.Y., inherited his childhood home -- and all its memories. In the small office, a shelf of his mom's cookbooks; in the pine-beamed, Santa Fe-influenced living room, cowhide couches and a backgammon table (I broke the glass top when I was Eden's age"); and on a counter in the kitchen, a tin holding his mother's ashes. An unorthodox resting place, maybe, but, Brolin says with a smile, "That's how she wanted it."
Tumblr media
Initially, nostalgia inhibited him from making the house his own. "For three years, I didn't move a lamp or change a bulb," he says. Lately, however, he's begun to tinker. Streisand hasn't offered any decorating tips, though Brolin notes that she's "very into her home like I am." She visited once, right after he moved in. "It was falling apart," says Brolin. "She said I should sell it." Instead, he tidied things up, bleached the sun-charred decks, and began combing antique stores for Tiffany lamps and Latin-influenced, carved-wood furniture. Outside, he plans to build a dock over the catfish pond. "When I was growing up, if you slipped walking in, you'd get three fish bones in your foot. It'll be easier for the kids to swim."
But what the one-time pasta chef really wants to master is nonchalant hosting, a la the Europeans. "They have their table outside and take their time," says Brolin, whose specialty is zabaglione. "That's what I want to create." He should have no problem, says Mary Steenburgen, who appeared with the younger Brolin in the recent TV version of Picnic. "Josh has a real sense of beauty." she says, "and he's very nurturing." He's also resolute. While filming Hollow Man, he decided to learn how to play guitar. "He borrowed mine when he could hardly play," says Kevin Bacon. "By the end of the shoot, he played well. If he has an interest, Josh does it." Adds Zerbe: "he's focused, which is why he's good on a Harley and at poetry."
That focus has been trained on girlfriend Driver since the duo's first date (they watched a sunset from his red Dodge Ram pickup). With Brolin's blessing, she has draped antique quilts over worn chairs in the living room, and photos beaming her smile pop up all over the house. And those children's drawings on the fridge? "Those are Minnie's," Brolin says, laughing. Each cartoon has a caption: "Carmine has hysterics when Esmeralda has a tantrum," "Carmine and Esmeralda fight over the remote," and so on. Explains Brolin, "I'm Carmine, the curmudgeon. She's Esmeralda, the beautiful, dancing, Spanish-looking chick who's with the guy with the serious emotional hump on his back." He comes upon "Esmeralda watches Carmine sleep" and grins: "That's nice."
Brolin and Driver seem to have doodled their way into a complementary relationship. "I'm more cynical, she lightens me up," he says. "I can't imagine being with anybody else." He's mum on marriage but admits he's gaga. "Absolutely. One hundred percent." It helps that Driver is smitten with the kids, who spend weekends at the ranch and weekdays with their mom, Alice Adair, an ex-actress with whom Brolin parted in 1995. The London-bred Driver "loves being up here," Brolin says, though the ways of the wild can throw her. When Brolin recently ordered his dog to get rid of a squirrel ("They ruin my property"), Driver turned ashen. "Man, tears -- just wahhh," he says with a wince. "she'd never seen anything so violent ... but that's country life."
These days the former punk rocker with a daredevil streak -- Brolin won the Toyota/Pro Celebrity car race this year (as did his dad in 1978) and he used to skydive -- is sticking to the ground. "Now I think, 'What if the chute doesn't open?' " His current notion of adventure includes checking out the Animal Planet channel with his kids. "This is the first time we've had TV in six years," says Brolin. "We're urbanizing!" He also kicks back by watching Spencer Tracy flicks or spinning Pavarotti on the Wurlitzer jukebox. Or, he'll mend a fence or hit a cattle auction  ("Sometimes I'll take home some 30 cows to graze.") Lest anyone confuse him with a character on The big Valley, Brolin does have a slick of slicker in his. When he's down in L.A. for work "I'll go to a museum or to the Mint for jazz," he says. "I need to be in the city sometimes."
But while the dusty-shoed cosmopolitan dreams of someday living in the south of France or in Greece, it's his homestead that inspires. In the stillness, "my imagination can kind of fly," says Brolin, as he takes in the view from his bedroom window, from the wildflowers to the oat fields to the ducks flying above it all. In winter, those hills are Irish green. Fog rolls in from the ocean and hangs like a blanket." A heavy, happy sigh. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."

California Highway 1 Road Trip
Six weeks ago, Highway 1 fully reopened in Big Sur, following devastating mudslides in May 2017. After $54 million worth of repairs and the removal of millions of tons of earth, rocks, and debris, travelers can once again enjoy an uninterrupted drive along the gorgeous coastal highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
But it’s not just the views that make the trek one of the most famous road trips in the world. There’s also the food to contend with: Dotted along the winding route, you’ll find peppery smoked-fish tacos, juicy burgers smothered in eggs and melted cheese, and homemade doughnuts oozing with jelly.
Our version of this journey begins in Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco. There, you’ll want to stock up on triple cream Mt Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and scarf as many straight-from-the-bay oysters as you can get down. Your eating adventure will continue from there—you’d better start hungry.
  Point Reyes
Side Street Kitchen
The specialty at this year-old, bright, modern diner is the crispy skinned rotisserie chicken, fragrant with herbs and served half or whole with an array of sauces, including curried yogurt, salsa verde, and chimichurri rojo. The other specialty: puffy, sugar-coated, fruit-filled apple fritters. 60 4th St., Point Reyes Station
The Boat Oyster Bar
Hog Island Oyster Co. is famed for the oysters it pulls out of the bay and supplies to top dining rooms around the country. A reservation-only café on the water features those world-class bivalves; the menu changes often, but it frequently includes Hog Island’s singular kumamotos. You can get a dozen raw for $36; even better are the barbecued ones, grilled and dripping with chipotle bourbon garlic butter. 20215 Shoreline Highway, Marshall
Half Moon Bay Area
  La Costanera
Peruvian food is having a moment in the U.S., and La Costanera, with its wall of windows overlooking the water from a second-floor dining room, has been recognized by Michelin’s Bib Gourmand. The menu has a mix of classics such as antichuchos (grilled skewers) with marinated beef heart and pork belly; empanadas; tender beer-braised lamb shank; and lomo saltado (beef tenderloin with onions, soy sauce, and a fried egg, if you want one). 8150 Cabrillo Highway, Montara
Dad’s Luncheonette
Chef Scott Clark used to cook at San Francisco’s Michelin-three-starred Saison. He’s transformed a red-painted train caboose into a cozy, wood-lined diner with a small menu of comfort food favorites. The $12 hamburger sandwich has melted cheese, a soft egg, and red onion pickles on grilled white bread; the mushroom version substitutes maitakes for the grass-fed beef. 225 Cabrillo Highway South, Half Moon Bay
Sam’s Chowder House
Seafood makes up almost the entire menu at Sam’s, including a “Captains Platter” of oysters, clams, shrimp, poke, and ceviche; an appetizer of grilled sardines; steamed clams (with the option of linguine); and lobster rolls, “naked” with butter or “dressed” with aioli. At night, the place highlights fresh catches such as Pacific swordfish and local halibut. The seats on the deck offer a panoramic ocean view. 4210 Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay
Hop Dogma Brewing Co.
The rotating array of craft brews at this locally popular beer hall might include Pyro’s Prost chili beer (pilsner brewed with jalapeño); Every Third Inquiry, a Bourbon barrel-aged stout; and the flagship Alpha Dank IPA. Guests can order food from nearby Lamas, a Peruvian and Mexican restaurant, and the tacos, burritos, and arroz con pollo will be delivered to the taproom. 270 Capistrano Rd., Half Moon Bay
Duarte’s Tavern
Dating back to 1894, when Frank Duarte bought the place for $12 in gold, this venerable restaurant specializes in a California version of Continental cuisine. The menu runs the gamut from shrimp cocktail to pork chops with fresh applesauce. The specialties are anything with artichokes, plus the cioppino, packed with clams, shrimp, cod and especially crab, which people drive down from San Francisco to eat. 202 Stage Rd.
Santa Cruz
The Picnic Basket
Set on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the picturesque luncheonette has an all-day menu with a powerful breakfast selection: golden-brown turnovers stuffed with seasonal fruit or Niman Ranch ham and cheese; an egg-potato-greens frittata sandwich on toast; and house-made jelly doughnuts. Later in the day, hot dogs and elbow macaroni and cheese turn up on the menu. The nearby Penny Ice Creamery, where everything is house-made under the same ownership, is equally popular. 125 Beach St.
Monterey Peninsula
The Meatery
A serious, whole-animal butcher shop with impressive cuts of meat on display, this white-tiled space also serves as a deli. Sandwiches range from a hefty Reuben to banh mi made with caramelized pork belly slices, pickled vegetables, a hit of cilantro, and kewpie mayo on a French roll. A highlight is the house corned beef with sauerkraut on rye. The hot food offerings change daily: On Sundays and Mondays, there’s buttermilk-fried chicken; on Thursdays, visitors line up for the baby back ribs. 1534 Fremont Blvd., Seaside
The Bench Restaurant
Set on the impossibly scenic Pebble Beach Golf Links 18th hole, the Bench has a crowd-pleasing menu that offers all kinds of pizza-styled flatbreads: with pepperoni; with ratatouille, fennel ricotta and heirloom tomatoes; and with bench bacon and grilled, pickled red onion. The 24-ounce short rib, the Smokey Joe, is smoked for 10 hours. Aside from the best views, the outdoor deck has fire-pit tables. 1700 17 Mile Dr., Pebble Beach
Aubergine at l’Auberge Carmel
Chef Justin Cogley operates one of the country’s best under-the-radar fine-dining restaurants. Set in a Relais & Châteaux property, the intimate dining room has a $175 tasting menu that combines local ingredients in unexpected ways: A Morro Bay oyster with caviar has a hit of sea water, and seared abalone is accompanied by romaine lettuce that’s been braised and sliced in thick rounds, with lobster-infused lettuce puree. Monte Verde at 7th Ave., Carmel
Big Sur
Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant
Amid the trees in the hills off the highway, this exceptional café produces terrific pizzas from the wood oven, with a charred, bready, chewy crust and such toppings as creamy greens, mushrooms and tangy taleggio, and red sauce meatballs. The place is first and foremost a bakery: The creamy lemon curd pie in a pistachio crust is addictive, as is any pastry in the display case. 47540 Highway 1
Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn
Post Ranch Inn, renowned for its modernist, cliffside, treehouse rooms overlooking the ocean, has a new manager, Gary Obligacion, formerly of Chicago’s celebrated Alinea. The property’s Sierra Mar restaurant is home to one country’s largest wine collections, with 14,000-plus bottles. It complements an elegant four-course tasting menu from which the seared foie gras has a garnish of hazelnuts and king salmon is paired with smoked split peas and sweet apple. 47900 Highway 1
The Sur House at Ventana Big Sur
In 2017, Ventana went through a multimillion-dollar renovation. The renovated Sur House restaurant now has outdoor fireside seating and a bar menu with smoky spice-rubbed chicken wings and open-faced tuna melt accented with pickled fennel. The dinner menu has deceptively simple dishes, such as grilled pork loin on a bed of jalapeño-spiked grits. The wine cellar is also notable: some 10,000 bottles with a focus on the Central Coast. 48123 Highway 1
San Luis Obispo
Ruddell’s Smokehouse
There’s not much barbecue along Highway 1. The notable exception is Ruddell’s, where founder Jim Ruddell set up shop in 2001 in a small building with a few tables outside. The place smokes albacore and salmon with a brown sugar and kosher salt rub; chicken is slow-cooked over hickory. The smoked seafood and poultry are available as tacos in a big French-roll sandwich or salad—and by the pound. 101 D St., Cayucas
Cracked Crab
In the surfing town of Pismo Beach, the unpretentious Cracked Crab has a blazing neon sign and lines stretching out the door. The menu changes according to availability of seafood and features an ocean’s worth of crab: dungeness cocktail with lime and avocado; puck-size, pan-seared lump blue crab cakes; and New England-style lobster rolls stuffed with crab instead. The seafood buckets offer the opportunity to mix and match wild Gulf shrimp, Alaskan crab, clams, mussels, and lobster tails; they go for $61 for one person and $79 for two and come with all the mallets and scissors you’ll need to extract the shellfish. 751 Price St., Pismo Beach
Santa Barbara
Jalama Beach Store & Grill
In Lompoc, the epicenter of Santa Barbara winemaking, is this grill, set inside a store that’s set inside the county park. The specialty is the Jalama burger: It’s quintessential Cali-style, with shredded lettuce, tomato, onions, special sauce, and a griddled bun. The burger has gotten so popular over its almost 40-year history that the name is trademarked. 9991 Jalama Rd., Lompoc
La Super-Rica Tacqueria
Famous for being name-checked by Julia Child, Super-Rica is a cheerful, white-and-turquoise stand with a large selection of options that feature stellar homemade tortillas. The tacos are filled with all kinds of grilled meats—chunks of spiced, brick-colored chorizo; adobado with tender strips of marinated pork. The Super-Rica Especial is made up cheese-stuffed green pasilla chiles that are roasted and draped over tortillas with marinated pork and more cheese, for $6. 622 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.
At the end of a dock on the harbor, this photogenic counter started out selling local seafood almost 30 years ago. Customers can still buy fish from commercial fishermen here. (There’s also a robust online store with trays of uni and stone crab claws.) The chopped caesar comes with a choice of grilled, skewered shrimp or sweet scallops. There’s more local shrimp, coated with coconut and crispy fried, garnished with onion rings. Also highly recommended are the linguine studded with garlic-sauteed clams in the shell and the monumental, steamed two-pound crab, along with a selection of local wine and beer by the pitcher. 230 Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara
The Los Angeles Area
Malibu Farm
What started as a pop-up dining room by Helene Henderson in 2013 is now a farmers market-driven restaurant and café on the Malibu Pier, with outposts in Miami and Hawaii. The all-day café at the end of the dock has a lightbulb-lit menu that boasts a pile-up of Swedish pancakes with whipped cream and whatever the seasonal berries are, as well as kale caesar and BLTs with lemon aioli brushed on whole wheat. Down the pier, a slightly more serious version of the restaurant offers a tofu, spinach, and tomato scramble on weekend mornings, and nachos, featuring blue corn chips laden with black beans, melty cheese, and drizzles of sour cream in the evenings. 23000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu
Tallula’s
Chef Jeremy Fox, who heads up the nearby vegetable-focused Rustic Canyon, now puts a creative spin on the Mexi-Cali dining room. In a colorful space decorated with hanging plants, Fox uses exceptional local corn, served Mexican-style with smoky chipotle aioli, and accents black-cod tacos with malt tartar sauce in tender, house-made tortillas. A daily taco special is dreamed up by rotating cooks in the kitchen. The serious bar program features mezcal Manhattans on draft, as well as the obligatory margaritas. 118 Entrada Dr., Santa Monica
Father’s Office
Chef Sang Yoon began serving one of the—if not the—country’s first gourmet burgers almost 20 years ago. The Office Burger is made from freshly ground, dry-aged beef, so it’s got a deep, meaty flavor that’s further accentuated by sweet caramelized onions, bacon, gruyere, and blue cheese. Accompanying fries, standard or sweet potato, are presented in a mini-shopping cart. Father’s Office is equally known for pouring dozens of local craft beers. 1018 Montana Ave., Santa Monica

AETHER Apparel Headquarters in Los Angeles

Design: Assembledge+
Location: Los Angeles, CA, United States
AETHER Apparel Headquarters, California
Born out of the desire for men’s and women’s collection to look at home in the city but withstand the outdoors, Aether’s products reflect a pure expression of form and function. AETHER Apparel engaged Assembledge+ to renovate an existing 1953 bow truss building and design a new, dynamic headquarters to echo the brand’s value and provide for a transparent and creative workspace.
The solution endeavoured to celebrate the original building by opening up the original structure and creating a communal and flexible workspace, partitioned into workstation areas, a design studio, communal areas and a conference room adjacent to a showroom.
Large window openings along the southern concrete façade fill the space with natural light and contribute to the sense of openness. The project’s clean lines, predominately white interiors with wooden details and exposed warehouse space are a reflection of Aether’s visual identity.
In the spirit of their extreme passion for the environment, the client requested the space to utilize solar energy for all the electrical requirements. A cooled roof made of foam was utilized to allow for all the wood structure and decking to be exposed while reflecting 80% of the sun’s ray.
Outside, a canopy composed entirely out of solar panels provides shade from the southern sun, while providing enough solar energy to power the entire office, with 30% extra to put back into the grid.

Here’s the One Thing That’ll Really Help You Organize Your Gardening This Spring
Eirasophie/iStock
Since many of us are cooped up at home to avoid the coronavirus, Americans are gardening with abandon right now. This has lead to serenity, sustenance—and a whole new category of clutter!
If your garden supplies are in disarray, there’s one item that could solve all your problems: a potting bench.
A potting bench is simply a table for doing garden work, such as sowing seeds, repotting starter plants, and filling containers with soil.
“It’s an especially ideal piece if you do a lot of container gardening,” notes Susan Brandt, a plant expert at Blooming Secrets.
This planting station is a smart addition to any backyard or garage, as it can save you from back strain and organize your gardening gear.
Stock it with your tools, load up your pots, and then get to work. (And when it’s not in use, drape it with twinkle lights, lay a pretty cloth on the surface and voilà, you have a home bar.)
Here’s more about these nifty helpers, as well as how to outfit a potting bench and some great-looking picks if you’re in the market for your own.
How to pick the best potting bench
Look for a sturdy base that will accommodate the weight of pots and bags of fertilizer.
“The main surface should be lower than a kitchen counter, because some of the pots you’ll be working with could be more than a foot high. So aim for a bench that’s roughly 36 inches in height,” Brandt suggests.
Make it metal—and mobile
Purchase gardening tools on Houzz
Pick a bench or table that’ll withstand the elements.
“Shop for materials that can take the heat of summer and the winter cold and can also get wet and dirty,” says Brandt.
Old wood will weather nicely, while galvanized metal will last a long time without rusting. And if you’re short on space, check out smaller carts on wheels, or even wagons, which can slide around your deck easily and store compactly.
Repurpose a tool bench
Photo by Santa Barbara Home Design
If there’s room in your garage, build in a few planks at the right level.
“Make sure there’s lots of surface area, so you can spread things out and add in drawers for tools or slots for garden schemes,” says Brandt.
Be sure to include plenty of hooks to hang small shovels, trowels, a rake, your sun hat, and pruning shears.
“A mix of shelves is ideal, with a low one to store large items like bags of soil, and others at eye level to house seed packets, gloves and other tools,” adds Oscar Ortega, maintenance care manager at FormLA Landscaping.
Add a sink or trough
Setting up your planting station in the garage means you might be close to water via a laundry sink. But if your potting bench is on a deck or in your breezeway, with access to pipes, consider a product with a sink, so you can tap into this water source.
“A built-in trough is another option that’ll allow you to clean tools and your hands, and it’ll hold extra soil while you’re potting,” says Brandt.
Want some shopping inspiration? Here are a few more potting sheds that’ll make gardening a pleasure this season.
The best potting bench for the budget-conscious
Extend your workspace with the fold-up side section of this bench.
Walmart
This pick hits the trifecta: It’s slender, affordable, and attractive. Use the lower level to stash your watering can and large cachepots, and store potting soil in the hidden compartment. And when the digging’s done, transform this piece into an outdoor buffet during backyard barbecues ($157, Walmart).
The best metal potting bench
Clean lines and decorative swirls add charm
Wayfair
This utility table has a removable bag for loading and decanting soil, and its simple design means that it will fade nicely into the background, allowing your flowers to shine.
Five hooks are included, and the open slats on each level make cleanup easy and allow excess water to drip away ($115, Wayfair).
The best sturdy, water-resistant potting bench
Pot (and entertain) in style with an island.
Pottery Barn
You’ll have to pony up for sustainable acacia paired with durable concrete, but the look is stunning, and it’s a patio piece you’ll use for years.
Starting seeds and repotting containers is easily done on the main surface—and this piece is also a smart-looking station for drinks, when stocked with an ice bucket, bar towels, melamine tumblers, and an icy urn of sangria ($1,299, Pottery Barn).

Boat on that thirty four died in fireplace was exempt from latest Coast Guard safety rules, records show
The Conception dive boat, on that thirty four individuals died in an exceedingly Labor Day fireplace, had been exempted by the U.S. Coast Guard from stricter safety rules designed to create it easier for passengers to flee, documents and interviews by the days show. The Conception was one in every of concerning 325 little traveler vessels designed before 1996 and given special exemptions from safety standards that the Coast Guard obligatory on new vessels, a number of that needed larger escape hatches and lighted drawings approvals, records show. The rules need vessels to own associate degree opening of a minimum of thirty two inches wide and exit signs that area unit lighted. The Conception, in-built 1981, had associate degree opening that was solely twenty four inches wide, in line with many federal regulators WHO requested obscurity so as to talk on the matter. It additionally failed to have lighted exit signs. It’s unclear whether or not such measures would have created a distinction on the Conception, on that passengers on a weekend diving expedition were unfree within the hull throughout associate degree early morning fireplace and unable to flee. Crew members on the deck aforementioned they were unable to achieve the passengers as a result of intense flames. But federal officers investigation the worst maritime disaster in fashionable Golden State history forthwith zeroed in on the practicality of the 2 exits within the space wherever passengers slept in stacked bunks below the water line. National Transportation Safety Board investigator Jennifer Homendy told the days in September that she was “taken aback” by the tiny size of the emergency escape hatches, adding that she thought it'd be troublesome for passengers to exit throughout associate degree emergency within the dark. In the aftermath of the hearth, the Coast Guard has stepped up inspections of comparable boats across the country. many boat homeowners have aforementioned that among the problems inspectors have raised is that the size of escape hatches, fireplace protection systems and crew coaching in emergencies. The Coast Guard is already beneath scrutiny within the wake of the Conception fireplace. Earlier this month, the days according that the Coast Guard had typically unheeded NTSB recommendations to enhance house of expertise for nearly twenty years. The safety exemptions the Conception and different boats received within the Nineteen Nineties area unit raising new queries. I am deeply involved concerning the hearth and sinking of the Conception, and therefore the questionable grandfathering of boats beneath older boat safety laws,” Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) told the days. I am needing to receive NTSB’s final report on this incident and NTSB’s recommendations for change federal laws during this space to make sure the security of passengers and vessel crews.” A marine safety skilled at Robson rhetorical and former Coast Guard chief of the workplace of economic Vessel Compliance Policy, aforementioned the grandfathering of older vessels typically happens once meeting new laws is economically infeasible and impractical. When adopting changes to the Subchapter T laws within the Nineteen Nineties, McAvoy aforementioned the Coast Guard needed to make sure enhancements and safety for brand spanking new boats, however additionally had to deal with what to try to to with existing vessels. Before the new standards were adopted, the Coast Guard wanted public comment and conducted feasibleness studies. Older vessels “may not be ready to modification what they need,” aforementioned McAvoy, WHO retired as a Coast Guard captain in 2016. The Coast Guard has the authority to create immediate safety changes within the wake of incidents like the deadly Conception fireplace, fire safety training courses aforementioned. He aforementioned he's unsurprised inspectors area unit already scouring vessels across the country and he noted that homeowners will continually transcend the minimum standards to make sure traveler safety, adding: “The Coast Guard laws area unit the ground, not the ceiling.” The original laws, written within the late Nineteen Fifties, needed 2 means that of escape, however failed to specify minimum dimensions or say wherever the exits required to be placed. Currently, the Subchapter T laws govern concerning five,000 vessels on U.S. waterways. Of those, concerning 325 still constitute the initial rules. The Coast Guard had created varied minor revisions to the initial laws throughout the years, however they weren't decent to stay au fait the changes touching the tiny traveler vessel fleet since the Sixties, in line with Coast Guard records. Prior to the Coast Guard change laws in 1996, the last major revision occurred in 1963, records show. The reasons for updates enclosed vessels obtaining larger and not maintaining with fire-prevention technologies. another excuse was vital casualties on waterways, together with eighty seven fireplace deaths between 1981 and 1986, federal records show. Among the incidents was a fireplace aboard a vessel on the river that claimed 3 lives. The Coast Guard determined that a $200 vapor detector would have prevented the deaths. to boot, thirty second of all fires occurred on wood-hulled vessels. and through that amount, fifty seven of all fires started within the machinery areas aboard the boats. After multiple casualty investigations, the NTSB and fire safety training uae every united that new rules were required “to forestall casualties or alleviate damages and injuries from future casualties,” Coast Guard records show. “The Coast Guard agrees with several of the investigation recommendations that are created. The rule additionally aforementioned the means that of escape should give the “easy movement of persons once carrying life jackets. There should be no protrusions in means that of escape that would cause injury, ensnare article of clothing or harm life jackets.” Additionally, the rule stated: “The minimum clear gap of a door or passageway used as a way of escape should not be less than” thirty two inches broad and “illuminated exit signs area unit needed and should be put in.” Truth Aquatics owner vale Fritzler has defended his crew members’ actions in making an attempt to save lots of the doomed passengers. On weekday, he aforementioned he supports safety laws. We have continually followed Coast Guard laws and no matter is needed,” he aforementioned in an exceedingly statement. “Our past inspections mirror our commitment.” In the days when the hearth throughout a weekend excursion within the Channel Islands, the NTSB, Coast Guard associate degreed federal agents toured the Vision — an 80-foot vessel like the Conception. Both boats area unit owned by Truth Aquatics, that operates the fleet for diving and different excursions round the Channel Islands. The U.S. Coast Guard has aforementioned the Conception had passed all recent inspections. Though slightly larger than the Conception, the Vision features a similar layout. Single and double bunks area unit stacked 2 and 3 high within the boat’s sleeping quarters below deck. A picket way leads from the sleeping space up to the galley. Authorities say the exit on the Conception — together with associate degree opening that disclose close to the dive deck on the boat — was in all probability blocked by fireplace. Homendy toured the Vision with Coast Guard Capt. mythical being Neubauer, WHO oversees the Marine Safety Board of Investigation. She aforementioned she and therefore the investigators turned the lights off to envision what it'd are like for the passengers unfree on the Conception. Getting to the emergency hatch was troublesome, she said, adding that they couldn’t realize the sunshine switches within the dark. the tiny hatch additionally was worrisome, particularly for larger individuals, she said. It was terribly troublesome,” fire safety consultants uae aforementioned concerning making an attempt to exit the opening. “I was balled over by that.” Industry specialists and various vessel captains told the days they expect the govt to adopt stricter safety laws as a results of the thirty four deaths. “It is obvious that the laws area unit in want of significant revision,” aforementioned a l. a. maritime professional WHO requested obscurity. “Whatever ‘means of escape’ is, it must truly add associate degree emergency for everybody on the vessel.” After the hearth on the Conception, investigators have cited a number of identical deficiencies discerned by the NTSB in different boat fires: lack of crew coaching and inadequate safety measures and maintenance. A preliminary NTSB investigation found that the Conception had profaned a demand that it have a roving watch throughout the night, spoken communication the 5 crew members WHO survived awoke to get the flames. A Santa Barbara County coroner’s review determined the thirty four killed died of smoke inhalation. While discussing marine casualties throughout the House hearing on Gregorian calendar month. 14, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Richard Timme, assistant commander for hindrance policy, aforementioned vessel homeowners and crews area unit the primary line of defense to safeguard passengers. “Equally necessary, the vessel master and crew play an important role and will be the primary to acknowledge issues and take early corrective action,” he said. “The vessel owner is indebted to support the master and crew’s ability to take care of the vessel and operate it safely.” The results of the NTSB investigation into the Conception boat fireplace area unit expected to be free in 2020. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is functioning with the Coast Guard and NTSB on determinative a reason for the deadly blaze. Coast Guard investigators together with the Federal Bureau of Investigation have served search warrants on Truth Aquatics and its vessels as a part of a criminal investigation. The proof gathered together with dozens of interviews is being reviewed by federal prosecutors as a part of the continued probe. During a House committee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation hearing concerning traveler safety on Gregorian calendar month. 14, Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara) asked a high Coast Guard official why the Conception operated beneath noncurrent safety laws. It has been dropped at my attention that Conception was operational beneath ‘old T’ safety necessities, that means they weren't following the foremost up-to-date safety rules,” Carbajal told Timme.Small traveler vessels advisement but a hundred tons constitute Subchapter T of the Code of Federal laws for boats. Timme known as the laws “valid construction standards today” and aforementioned several vessels presently operate beneath them with none problems. But if a proper Marine Board of Investigation, the highest-level marine casualty investigation within the Coast Guard, finds that the previous construction standards contributed to the Conception tragedy, changes might happen, Timme supplementary. We can completely explore that,” he said. Brian William Curtis, the NTSB director of the workplace of Marine Safety, told Carbajal the agency is scrutinizing the previous and current standards to work out if every adequately addresses “means of escape and crew responsibilities” on little traveler vessels.

A Romantic Lavender and Blush Backyard Wedding at a Private Home in Montecito
We’ll always be lovers of a good backyard wedding… there’s just something so intimate and romantic about exchanging vows in such a personal place. Today’s wedding from Lacie Hansen Photography with planning by Jill and Co Events is one of those heart stopping, happy-tear filled days that we live for. Lovely lavender bridesmaid dresses, charming fleurs from TOAST Santa Barbara and a Lele Patisserie cake that’s almost too pretty to eat. See all the reasons why we’re obsessed with this magical day below!
Marta and Steven's Santa Barbara wedding was a friend and family filled affair, celebrating at all of their favorite locations around town.
Living in Santa Barbara, the bride and groom wanted to relax and bring all of their out of town family and friends to get to experience where they live! They started with an engagement party at the brides sister and Maid of Honor's home in Montecito the year prior.
The wedding was set to take place at the parents of the brides home at the top of Hot Springs Road in Santa Barbara, with the mountains in the backdrop and the views of the ocean. The rehearsal dinner was held at the beloved San Ysidro Ranch for an intimate group, followed by a welcome bash the following day at the brides equestrian barn in Carpinteria. Carrots and apples were placed out for guests to feed the horses, and the wood fired pizza oven turned out custom flatbreads for all guests.
The wedding day was filled with special touches incorporating family. Not only was the bride married on the same lawn where her sister was married, the same family friend who married her parents, her brother, and her sister officiated the ceremony for Marta and Steven. Their beloved dog Merlin acted as ring bearers, with the brides nieces serving as the sweetest flower girls.
Cocktails were enjoyed with a panoramic view of the ocean on a decked pool prior to guests making their way down the candle lined pathway to the tented tennis court for a dinner and dancing. The dance floor was packed all night with only a break while the groom serenaded the bride from the stage. The guests enjoyed brunch at the Biltmore before they made their way home and the bride and groom jetted off to Bora Bora.

Journal - Architectural Drawings: 10 Plans for Granny Flats and Guesthouses
Got an innovative residential project of your own? Enter it in the 8th Annual A+Awards for a shot at international publication and global recognition. Submit your projects before February 14th to secure a special Early Entry Discount.
Housing and shelter are at the core of architecture. Shaping the way we live, homes are a reflection of our daily lives and how we make space for ourselves. This is true for granny flats and guesthouses as well, residential spaces that relate to larger living quarters. Usually meant for temporary stays, they are typically designed at smaller scales to create more intimate experiences.
Though guesthouses are often reserved for wealthy clients and the upper class, they reveal unique relationships between space, landscape and privacy. Drawing together 10 guesthouses and granny flat plans, the following projects exemplify this niche form of residence around the world. Made with diverse materials and programs, they illustrate how people can inhabit weekend getaways and long-term living quarters in plan. Together, the projects showcase housing that’s specifically catered to a smaller scale of domestic life.
Guest House by SMNG A Ltd., Lakeside, MI, United States
The guest house on property was completed in 2012 and provides a private space for guests and a remote study for the owner. The form of the guest house was inspired by an Anselm Kiefer painting. On a lead sheet at the center of the artist’s work, a chalk outline of a cube was drawn with diagonally opposite corners chamfered. Transferred to a small structure the cleaving of the corners offered a unique way of both entering and lighting the interior.
Ithaca Guest House by Ikon.5 Architects, Ithaca, NY, United States
Set in a residential neighborhood in Ithaca, this spare guest house rests on an existing pool house foundation. Organized across from the brick main house and complemented by a steel and wood pergola, the guest house creates the setting for an outdoor stone-terraced swimming pool court. With black-honed granite floors and minimalist design elements, the house is a contemporary counterpoint to its natural surroundings.
Off-Grid Guest House by Anacapa, Santa Barbara, CA, United States
Sited on one of the last remaining undeveloped coastal areas in California, this modern guest house resides on a wildlife preserve. Nestled into a steep hillside, the residence was designed with low visual and environmental impact on the surrounding landscape. Disguised by a low profile and green roof, the home itself invites views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding rolling hills, through a generous amount of sliding glass and expansive decks, which cantilever over the foundation’s steep rock face.
Capel Manor House Guest Pavilion by Ewan Cameron Architects, Horsmonden, United Kingdom
The new Guest Pavilion in the Kentish Weald near the village of Horsmonden comprises 2 bedroom suites. The pavilion is located on the grounds of Capel Manor House, an iconic modernist pavilion completed by Michael Manser in 1971. Both the main house and the new pavilion are sited upon the raised, arcaded podium of a ruined Italianate mansion on a leafy estate that was the once the home of Jane Austen’s fore-bears.
Fish Creek Guest House by Carney Logan Burke Architects, Jackson Hole, Wyoming
The Fish Creek project is a 950 square foot guesthouse as part of the first phase of a master plan for a 5-acre sloping wooded property owned by the architect and his wife in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.   The design was intended to immerse the owners in the experience of the forest both visually and aurally. The house is a simple rectangle oriented on an east-west axis that mediates between the forest on three sides and the stream and a clearing to the north.
Hudson Guesthouse by Janson Goldstein, Hudson, NY, United States
This four-acre hillside site outside of the Upstate New York town of Hudson includes a new guesthouse and pool adjacent to an existing contemporary house. The 20-foot-by-45-foot pool takes advantage of the property’s Hudson Valley views, while the 950-square-foot guesthouse forms an entry court with the main structure. A covered breezeway divides the guesthouse into two sides, one a gym for the homeowners and guests, the other a living-and-sleeping area for guests. The opening acts as a bridge between the sides, allowing for privacy as well as a connection to the surrounding landscape.
Guest houses in Relax Park Verholy by YOD design lab, Poltava, Ukraine
YOD’s guest houses are a variation of the hotel rooms in the spa-complex “Relax Park Verholy,” located in a pine forest in the Poltava region. Houses are built from lightweight metal frame structures made by BF Zavod company (Kiev). The space of the house is 32 sq. meters, and the total weight of the frame with the sandwich panels, covering construction and floors, is 2200 kg. The designers managed to complete the concept and construction within only two months.
Dalefield Guest House by Team Green Architects, Queenstown, New Zealand
The Dalefield Guest House was made as a private space for visitors on a rural site. Providing quarters for the owner’s family and friends, the structure is a simple, tranquil retreat for relaxation and contemplation.  Designed as guest accommodation in the grounds of an existing property in Dalefield, the Brief was to provide a place to retreat that offers a guest experience for visitors to his corner of New Zealand.
The Guest House by PARATELIER, Tanzania
Located near a small artificial lake, this project was made as a backdrop against the colors of sand, pines and the blue sky. The guest house’s main function is to be a temporary living space for the guest(s) of the property owner. Additionally, a parking area and storage space for agricultural activities complete the simple program set by the client. One volume, located parallel with the lake, is divided into three parts for three different functions – living, storage and parking.
Overlook Guest House by Schwartz and Architecture | S^A, Los Gatos, CA, United States
The Overlook House creates a new accessible indoor/outdoor second dwelling that allows an aging family member to remain close by the main residence and independently at home. To maintain ease of access, the new 775 sq ft home incorporates the driveway approach and garage into a formalized entry sequence, transitioning fluidly to a cantilevered breezeway at the front door framing views across Silicon Valley.

More Legal Action Taken After Conception Fire
Maritime legal firm Fiore Achermann has initiated legal action on behalf of the family of a man killed in the Conception dive boat fire in September 2019.
On August 31, 2019, 33 passengers and six crew members boarded the Conception for a three-day diving voyage off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. In the early morning hours of September 2, a fire broke out onboard the vessel that resulted in the death of 33 passengers and one crew member.
An investigation into the tragedy found that divers and crew would charge lithium-ion batteries on the boat for cell phones and tablets, as well as their cameras and other equipment. Preliminary evidence suggests the fire started in the galley where the batteries were being charged.
The surviving members of the vessel's crew were berthed on the pilothouse level of the boat, and they were awakened by the fire, not by an alarm; at that point, it proved impossible to rescue the victims belowdecks.
The Conception's smoke detectors were not connected together in a unified fire detection and alarm system, as fire systems meeting merchant-vessel standards are not required aboard a small "T-boat" with less than 49 passengers.
After the fire, the U.S. Coast Guard for the first time recommended that crews limit the use of unsupervised charging of lithium-ion batteries to reduce the risk of fire hazards.
The family alleges that the Conception dive boat was unseaworthy at the time of the incident. The vessel lacked adequate life-saving and fire-safety equipment, trapping the divers in the hull without a safe means of egress.
Fiore Achermann's filing is the sixth taken over the incident against the vessel owner Truth Aquatics. "Nearly a year before the Conception's deadly voyage, Truth Aquatics had a fire onboard their sister ship, the Vision, which was reportedly ignited by a lithium battery," said Jennifer Fiore, the firm's leading maritime lawyer.
In addition to the duty to provide a safe and seaworthy vessel to the dive-boat passengers, "the vessel owners had a responsibility to know about the potential dangers of lithium-ion batteries being charged onboard before encouraging passengers to charge their equipment.” Fiore claims the tragedy was completely preventable.
The NTSB, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Coast Guard's marine safety division, the Justice Department and the Coast Guard Investigative Service are conducting three parallel investigations into the circumstances of the fire. A preliminary report by the NTSB found that no one was designated as a roving watch at the time of the fire.
The NTSB recounts details of the vessel and the events surrounding the fire:
The wood and fiberglass vessel was built in 1981. The vessel had three levels: the uppermost sun deck, containing the wheelhouse and crew rooms; the main deck, which included the salon and galley; and the lower deck within the hull, which housed the passenger berthing (bunkroom) and shower room, as well as the engine room and tanks.
Initial interviews of three crewmembers revealed that no mechanical or electrical issues were reported. At the time of the fire, five crewmembers were asleep in berths behind the wheelhouse, and one crewmember was asleep in the bunkroom, which was accessed from the salon down a ladderwell in the forward, starboard corner of the compartment. The bunkroom had an emergency escape hatch located on the aft end, which also exited to the salon. There were two, locally-sounding smoke detectors in the overhead of the bunkroom.
A crewmember sleeping in the wheelhouse berths was awakened by a noise and got up to investigate. He saw a fire at the aft end of the sun deck, rising up from the salon compartment below. The crewmember alerted the crew behind the wheelhouse. As crewmembers awoke, the captain radioed a distress message to the Coast Guard.
The crewmembers attempted to access the salon and passengers below. Unable to use the aft ladder, which was on fire, the crewmembers jumped down to the main deck (one crewmember broke his leg in the process) and tried to access the salon and galley compartment, which was fully engulfed by fire at the aft end and by thick smoke in the forward end, through a forward window. Unable to open the window and overwhelmed by smoke, the crew jumped overboard.
Two crewmembers and the captain swam to the stern, reboarded the vessel, opened the hatch to the engine room, and saw no fire. Access to the salon through the aft doors was blocked by fire, so they launched a small skiff and picked up the remaining two crewmembers in the water. They transferred to a recreational vessel anchored nearby (Grape Escape) where the captain continued to radio for help, while two crewmembers returned to the Conception to search for survivors around the burning hull. Local Coast Guard and fire departments arrived on scene to extinguish the fire and conduct search and rescue. The vessel burned to the waterline by morning and subsequently sank in about 60 feet of water.
